The Citadel volleyball program returns five starters and seven letter winners from the 2003 campaign. Last season saw the Bulldogs win their first Southern Conference match as well as rewrite every single match record, 11 season and seven career marks.

The Bulldogs celebrate their first SoCon victory, a 4-1 win over Wofford.

Head coach Wendy Anderson enters her sixth season at the helm of the Bulldog volleyball program with assistant Kreg Togami on board for his fourth year. In the off-season the Cadets picked up two junior college transfers and a true freshman who coach Anderson hopes will add much needed depth to a program full of veteran players. “With our incoming players, we will have the most depth that we’ve ever had at the outside hitter position,” said Anderson. “Having a setter with experience other than high school will make it much easier to fill the gap left by Desiree Browning as well.” With the loss of four year starter Desiree Browning, senior Katie Livingston and JC transfer Crystal Bessler will split time at setter. When she is not playing setter look for Livingston to split time with junior Melissa Fridinger at libero. This season the Bulldogs will look to build on the success of their first SoCon match win, which came against Wofford at McAlister Field House on November 8, in what was the second meeting of the season between the two schools. The Cadets will open up the season with a trip to Clemson where they will participate in the Big Orange Bash Tournament. At the Bash, the Dogs will face the Clemson Tigers, Northern Iowa Panthers and Winthrop Eagles. They will also get their first taste of Southern Conference foe Western Carolina in a match that will not count toward the SoCon season, but will be a good early season test.

“This is our first time opening the season at a big-time invitational (Clemson),” said Anderson. “It will be good for our girls to be exposed to a big-time volleyball environment.” Another addition to this year’s slate will see the Bulldogs travel to The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD where they will face the Midshipmen of Navy and the Black Knights of Army. The Cadets will open up SoCon play in Statesboro, GA on September 14 against Georgia Southern, and wrap up the season with a trip across town when they face cross-town rival College of Charleston on November 12. Senior Katie Livingston high-fiving her teammates during the Bulldogs’ victory over SoCon foe Wofford.

Wendy Anderson, a former all-conference player at Clemson University and District 6 Coach-of-the-Year at Converse College, is in her sixth season atop The Citadel’s volleyball program. Three seasons ago Anderson led the Bulldogs to the school’s best ever record, 7-24. Last season she led the squad to its first ever Southern Conference Match victory with a 3-1 defeat of Wofford on November 8 in McAlister Field House. In addition to the first SoCon match win, the 2003 Bulldogs bested every individual match record. The squad combined to break 18 other records as well, including 11 season records and seven career marks. Under Anderson’s tutelage, the 2002 squad rewrote the Bulldog record book breaking 18 records. As a team, the Bulldogs set three new match records and four season marks. Individually, four match and season records fell, as well as three career marks. In 2001, Anderson led the Bulldogs to the school’s best record ever by winning 13 more games than in the 2000 season. Twelve individual and six team records were broken in the 2001 season under Anderson’s guidance. Anderson was faced with the challenge of building The Citadel’s volleyball program from the ground up in 1999, as The Citadel added the women’s sport to its list of NCAA sports.

Anderson guided Converse to a three-year record of 61-39 from 1991-93. She helped Converse win a pair of NAIA Distrcit 6 championships in 1992 and 1993, and was named District Coach-of-the-Year in 1993. A member of the USA National Team Handball squad since 1995, Anderson was a member of the 1999 team that played for the USA National Team in the Pan-American Games that were held in Winnipeg, Canada. Major General John Southy Grinalds, United States Marine Corps (Retired), was named eighteenth President of The Citadel on his 59th birthday, January 5, 1997. General Grinalds was graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy in 1959, earning a B.S. degree. He continued his education at Brasenose College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography and, once again, graduating with honors. General Grinalds served as a White House Fellow in 1971 and completed his MBA at Harvard Business School with distinction in 1974. General Grinalds has served abroad in the Mediterranean region, the Panama Canal Zone, Japan, Belgium, and for two tours of duty in Vietnam. During one of those tours, he was awarded a Silver Star for heroism in combat. From 1982 to 1985, General Grinalds served as special assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, working in delicate negotiations between NATO and the French military. Because of his outstanding service there, French President François Mtterand inducted him into the Legion d’Honneur, a rare honor for an American colonel. In 1986, General Grinalds received the rank of brigadier general before beginning an assignment serving the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was later promoted to major general and, in 1989, became the commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. General Grinalds then became the seventh headmaster of one of the South’s most prestigious boys’ preparatory schools, Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where he served until coming to The Citadel. General Grinalds married Norwood Dennis, his childhood sweetheart from Macon, GA, in 1962. They have four children. General Grinalds is a member of the Rotary Club of Charleston, the Senior Board of Directors of the Brasenose College Charitable Foundation, a trustee of Porter-Gaud School, and a member of the Executive Board of the Coastal Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America. General Grinalds also has membership in the Officers’ Christian Fellowship, the White House Fellows Association, the Association of American Rhodes Scholars, and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is a former trustee of HampdenSydney College and the Madeira School and has served as a member of the Virginia and South Carolina state selection committees for the Rhodes Scholarship Trust.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson begins his fifth year as the Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first four years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past four years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 198485 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total (7-14-2027) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson is in his fourth year serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most influential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and seven grandchildren.
