2005 Outlook

With the return of seven upperclassmen, including four starters and six letter winners, The Citadel volleyball program hopes to add to their recent successes. The 2004 squad increased the season mark for wins from seven to 12 and posted three conference wins along with a non-conference victory over Western Carolina. Creating stability in the program, Wendy Anderson enters her seventh season at the helm of the volleyball program with assistant Kreg Togami on board for his fifth year.

The Cadets play 18 SoCon matches, instead of the 16 that they played in previous seasons. They face UNCGreensboro and Elon once while facing the remaining eight colleges twice. In addition, this season marks the first time that the Bulldogs experience post-season play. At the Southern Conference Spring meetings, coaches voted to include all 11 league teams in the tournament. “It is very exciting for us to have post-season opportunities,” said Anderson. “It will be a great experience for the girls.”

In the off-season the Bulldogs picked up five recruits. Two middle blockers, two setters and an outside hitter increase the roster to 12 players, the largest squad that The Citadel has ever fielded in its eight seasons.

“Even without the change I feel that we would have had good chance of making the tournament,” she added. “ I’m very confident in the work that the girls have put in during the off-season and in their improved abilities.”

“We are excited about all of the possibilities for our squad this season,” said Anderson. “We have more options available to us offensively and more depth in our bench.

The Bulldogs will open the season and SoCon play when they host the College of Charleston on August 26 in McAlister Field House. They will close the season with a home match against Georgia Southern on November 12.

“We are looking forward to our seniors stepping into leadership roles as well as the talent that the newcomers bring to the squad.” With the loss of Katie Livingston and Audra Ritchie there are spots for freshmen to move into if they perform well during pre-season drills. Livingston set a new single-season assist mark last year with 1,132. Junior Crystal Bessler and a pair of incoming freshmen, Emily Hill and Ashley Winter, compete for the starting job at setter. Ritchie set a new single season mark in kills with 363 and placed herself third on the career kills list with 895. Senior Samantha Parisi will look to set the bar even higher in 2005 for if she duplicates or improves on her kill total from 2004, she will rank first on the career chart shattering Nicole Mantu’s (‘99-’02) mark by 82 kills. The Bulldogs participate in two regular season tournaments in 2005. They travel to Raleigh, NC on September 2-3 for the first tournament and will also travel to the Air Force Academy to participate in the All-Academy Volleyball Tournament, September 16-17. With the departure of East Tennessee State from the Southern Conference, the schedule has been revamped.

named District Coach-of-the-Year in 1993. A member of the USA National Team Handball squad since 1995, Anderson was a member of the 1999 team that played in the Pan-American Games that were held in Winnipeg, Canada. She helped lead the team to a fourth place finish.

A former All-Atlantic Coast Conference standout at Clemson and a NAIA District 6 Coach-of-the-Year at Converse, Wendy Anderson is in her seventh season atop The Citadel’s volleyball program. Last season, Anderson led the Bulldogs to the school’s best ever record, 12-20. In October, midway through the 2004 season, Anderson learned that she had breast cancer. She continued to coach the team through a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Following the season, Anderson underwent chemotherapy and is now doing very well. Two seasons ago she led the squad to its first ever Southern Conference match victory with a 3-1 victory over Wofford on November 8, 2003 in McAlister Field House. In addition to the first SoCon match win, the 2003 Bulldogs bested every individual match record. The squad combined to break 18 other records as well including 11 season records and seven career marks. Under Anderson’s tutelage, the 2002 squad rewrote the record book breaking 18 records. As a team, the Bulldogs set three new match records and four season marks. Individually, four match and season records fell, as well as three career marks. In 2001, Anderson led the Bulldogs to 13 more victories than in the 2000 season. Twelve individual and six team records were broken in the 2001 season under Anderson. She was faced with the challenge of building The Citadel’s volleyball program a year after the sport was added in 1998. Anderson guided Converse to a three-year record of 61-39 from 1991-93. She helped win a pair of NAIA Distrcit 6 championships in 1992 and 1993, and was

In the spring of 2003, Anderson rejoined the USA National Team Handball squad for the 2003 PanAmerican Championships in Brazil, a qualifier for the 16th Women’s World Championship held in Croatia in December 2003. The squad, with Anderson’s experience, finished fourth, falling one place shy of qualifying for the World Championships. While training with the team as much as possible, Anderson also competed in a women’s team handball league in Canada. Anderson, 38, graduated from Broome High School in 1985 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Clemson in 1990. While at Clemson, the Cowpens native was a two-year team captain on the Tiger volleyball team and earned All-ACC honors in 1987 and 1989.

A 1989 graduate of Wheaton College (IL), Togami earned a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Wellness Management. He served as an assistant at NC State from 1994 to 1999 while also serving as the head coach of Club Raleigh. While coaching Club Raleigh, his teams won three regionals and qualified for the national tournament four consecutive seasons. Born April 4, 1966, Togami is married to the former Laura Kimbrell and they are the proud parents of Jonathan (2).

Peg Martschink, a 2005 graduate of the College of Charleston, enters her first season as a certified athletic trainer and resident in The Citadel’s Sports Medicine Department. While at the College of Charleston, Martschink worked as a student athletic trainer for the volleyball and baseball teams and also worked with the Bishop England High School football team. She earned two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Athletic Training and one in Exercise Science. Martschink was also a member of the College of Charleston sailing team her freshman and sophomore years and served as an intern in The Citadel’s Sports Medicine Department in the Spring of 2005. Her senior year she received the Athletic Training Academic Honors Award at the College of Charleston. Martschink is a native of Charleston as well as a 2000 graduate of Ashley Hall. She is currently working towards her master’s degree in Health, Exercise and Sport Science in The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies.

A Coach’s story: From invincible to vulnerable by Ken Burger (reprinted with permission from The Post and Courier)

The trip from invincibility to vulnerability is short and scary. Wendy Anderson knows this very well. She is on the road between the two, gripping the wheel of life tightly and hoping for the best. Like most athletes, she’s been flying down life’s four-lane highway without fear. Then, suddenly, she hit the brakes. “I remember the day the doctor said something didn’t feel right when he examined a lump in my breast,” she said. That was in October when Anderson, the women’s volleyball coach at The Citadel, was worried about real-life things like beating UNC Greensboro. But those things would soon take a back seat on this journey. The next step was a mastectomy and reconstruction of her left breast. Then more bad news. She would need chemotherapy. “Once I got over the shock of all this, I’ve tried to approach it like an athlete and a coach,” said Anderson, who is 37 years old. “I’ve had challenges before. This is just another one.” A very important one. GROUND ZERO Athletics brought Anderson this far and will no doubt help her the rest of the way. One of six children, the Cowpens native knew the only way she would go to college would be through sports. So she worked hard, earned a volleyball scholarship to Clemson and got her degree in education. After a year of teaching, she landed the job as head volleyball coach at Converse College. In her spare time she started playing handball (the international game played on a basketball court), played on the U.S. national team and became a worldclass player in that sport.

Her next challenge came in 1999 when she accepted the job of building the women’s volleyball program at The Citadel. From ground zero, she has brought The Citadel women to respectability during her six seasons at the military school. Last year, they won their first Southern Conference game. “We’re getting better,” Anderson said of the program. “I knew it would be a challenge. As a coach, I like challenges.” But as a volleyball coach, she has some sense of control. As a cancer patient, all she can control is her attitude. TEACHING OPPORTUNITY Last Friday night, she had her team over to her house and they ceremoniously cut her long hair. Each player snipped a lock and saved it. Anderson said it was emotional, funny and frightening all at the same time. “I’m going to lose my hair during chemo,” she said. “So we decided to cut it off as a way of preparing for this. My girls are wonderful. It’s been emotional for all of us.” But it’s more than that. It’s also an opportunity to teach. Anderson certainly didn’t know this detour in her life was coming, but now that she’s on this road, she wants others to learn from it. “I feel this has happened for a reason,” she said. “Maybe I’m supposed to be a spokesman to reach young athletes and educate them about this. I sat my team down and talked to them about being aware of breast cancer. It’s not something that just happens to your grandmother or your great aunt. It can happen to your sister. It can happen to you.”

The Administration

The Citadel Board of Visitors announced June 19 that they selected Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa Jr. to be the college’s 19th president subject to his release from active duty. Rosa, a member of the Class of 1973, is currently serving as the superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Rosa, who was the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity football letters, will succeed Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds who left The Citadel on August 1. The Board of Visitors named Brigadier General Roger Clifton Poole, a business professor and former vice president for academic affairs, to serve as interim president until Rosa arrives. Rosa, 53, took over as superintendent of the Air Force Academy in July of 2003. A command pilot with more than 3600 flying hours, Rosa was commissioned in the Air Force in 1973 after graduating from The Citadel with a B.S. in business administration. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden State University and has completed programs at Harvard, the U.S. Army War College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Air Command and Staff College. Board of Visitors Chairman Billy Jenkinson praised Rosa’s credentials. “With his first-hand knowledge of the college and his vast leadership experience, John Rosa is the ideal person to be our next president,” Jenkinson said.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson begins his sixth year as the Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first five years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past five years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson concluded a six-year term serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most influential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and seven grandchildren.
