The Citadel Athletics Department Mission Statement The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at The Citadel is to develop, maintain, and continue to improve a well-rounded program of athletics geared to the aims and objectives of The Citadel, the Southern Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In order to carry out this mission, all athletics personnel must be familiar with the athletics policy as approved by the Board of Visitors and the President of The Citadel: The Citadel policy on intercollegiate athletics includes a balanced program covering a broad spectrum of sports for men and women. The College will support this program to enable its representatives to be competitive in every respect. The Citadel will compete as a Division I institution under current NCAA and Southern Conference regulations. The athletics program will be conducted within the aims, standards, and objectives of The Citadel as a comprehensive military college providing a quality education. The Department of Athletics is committed to gender and minority equity in all of its programs. In addtion, for the safety and welfare of student-athletes, The Citadel maintains full-time certified trainers, a college surgeon, and special orthopedic doctors to provide medical support services.

Season Outlook The Bulldogs are looking ahead to a new year filled with both new and old. With 11 returning players and seven fresh faces, second- year head coach Bob Winch hopes to build upon the momentum from the 2006 season. After losing only two seniors, Holli Knox and Kelly Hasselman, the Bulldogs will have experience and depth on their side. The Bulldogs will return with the all-time leader in saves with 275, senior Britni Bunnell, and sophomore Emily Green. Green played in 13 games while starting seven and earned the lowest all-time and single season goals against average, 2.60. Adding to the depth in the goalkeeper position will be freshman Lisa Wilson, a former Georgia AAAA Player of the Year. Coach Winch is looking for all three players to compete for playing time and is excited to see who will step up. “We will be looking to improve our communication skills this season and that begins with the goalkeeper,” said Winch. “It is imperative that she directs the team because she is the only one that has a full vision of the field and can be the eyes for her teammates.” With three returning starters, the defense will bring a wealth of experience in the backfield. Senior Aly Woodhead, junior Emily Haller, and sophomore Kristine Devine will man the defense. Woodhead, a 2007 captain, has competed in all 57 games of her collegiate career and has started
in all but two. Haller and Devine will be expected to continue their hard-nose defensive skills that only allowed 29 goals last season, an all time low. Newcomer Jessica Stewart will add to the Bulldogs defense and may see some playing time in the midfield. The mid-field will be an important component in this year’s formation, and the Bulldogs have a lot

The Bulldog offense will be packed with talent from those returning and the newcomers. Leading the way will be sophomore Rachelle Ornelas, who in 2006 became the first Bulldog to earn second-team All-Conference honors while ranking third in the SoCon in goals with seven. ViVi Brown returns after playing in all 20 games last season and registering six shots on goal. There will be a lot of youth coming from the forwards, as the Bulldogs will expect Liza Akesson, Dominic Snyder and Nicole Martinoli to contribute in the team’s attack. Junior transfer Nikki Mares will be a fresh face but is no rookie. She led her junior college to the Bay Valley Conference Championship and a perfect 23-0 season. “We have a very talented team this year and every position is wide open,” said Winch. “I want to emphasize competition within the team to prepare the girls for the fierce competition we will be up against this season. The players will earn their spot and will have to continue to work hard to keep it.”

The Citadel Bulldogs
In addition to a very competitive Southern Conference, the Bulldogs will have their hands full with non-conference games. They will travel to North Carolina to play UNC Charlotte, the 2006 Atlantic 10 champions, marking the first ever meeting between The Bulldogs and the 49ers. Jacksonville State, Coastal Carolina, who placed second in the Big South in 2006, and Presbyterian College will add to their challenging non-conference games.

Bob Winch Head Coach ● Second Season UNC Pembroke ‘86
Bob Winch Bob Winch enters his second season as head coach of the Bulldogs after making major strides in the 2006 season. He led the Bulldogs to their first conference tie against UT Chattanooga and tied cross-town rival Charleston Southern. Winch, a UNC Pembroke graduate, recently completed a one-year stint as an assistant with Auburn’s women’s soccer program. The Tigers finished second in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference last season and made it to the championship game of the SEC Tournament to clinch second place behind nationally ranked Tennessee. Winch also helped coach four 2005 SEC-All Tournament selections, including the tournament most valuable player. Winch began his collegiate coaching career at Clemson University where he was a men’s assistant coach from 1990-1992. Before joining the staff at Auburn, Winch served as the men’s head soccer coach at the University of Central Florida from 19932004. He led the team to three consecutive Atlantic Sun Tournament titles, while also making an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for three consecutive seasons. Winch was also named the 2004 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year. Winch graduated from UNC Pembroke in 1986 and was a member of the soccer team of which he was named team captain from 1983 - 1984. He went on to pursue a post-graduate education, receiving a Master’s degree in education from Slippery Rock University in 1988. Winch is married to Janet Winch and the couple has three children, Sara (12), Nicholas (11) and Hayden (9).

Jamie Stewart
Jamie Stewart enters her second season as an assistant coach at The Citadel. Stewart has experience coaching various camps and club teams, while also playing soccer at the College of Charleston from 2000-2004. She works primarily with the field players while also working with the goalkeepers. Stewart is also heavily involved in recruiting and responsible for the operations of the soccer program. Stewart spent five years on the Ralph Lundy Soccer Association Soccer Camp staff and coached three years for the Kevin Dempsey Soccer Camp and the Mount Pleasant Soccer Club. She also led the MPSC Conquest soccer team to two South Carolina State Championships. A 2004 graduate of the College of Charleston, Stewart earned a bachelors degree in corporate communications while she was also a four-year member of the Cougar soccer team. During her time as a Cougar, Stewart earned second-team All-Southern Conference honors twice and was tabbed to the SoCon All-Tournament team three times. She acted as team captain from 2001-04 and was named a NSCAA Academic All-American in 2003. Stewart was also a top-three finalist for the J. Stewart Walker Cup which is awarded to a top athlete excelling in academics, athletics and leadership at the College of Charleston. Stewart was a four -year varsity player at Mauldin High School in Greenville, S.C. and was awarded the AAAA SC Player of the Year in 2000. She was part of the Olympic Development Team for seven years and was also a member of the five-time state championship squad UGSA United. Stewart is currently working towards her masters degree in secondary counseling in The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies.

Les Robinson Athletics Director Eighth Year ● North Carolina State ‘65
Les Robinson At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson is in his seventh year as the Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first six years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. Robinson has been faced with having to hire three football coaches during his tenure. The process in which he hired Ellis Johnson, John Zernhelt and current coach Kevin Higgins , featured a coast-to-coast whirlwind tours of the entire Citadel family, and was received extremely well. He was successful in getting numerous people to talk about Citadel football months in advance. He recently hired basketball coach Ed Conroy, and administratively, has realigned the Athletics Department’s administration. During Robinson’s tenure, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. He hired the school’s first senior woman administrator, taken measures to revamp totally the department’s weight room, and is personally spearheading the football stadium project. The stadium project has entered the forefront in The Citadel Athletics community as the West Side stands have been torn down and rebuilding expected to be complete in August. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach of the Year in 1979 and 1985. Robinson earned a bachelor of science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965. The Robinson’s, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Ctiadel, have four children: Greg, Robby, Kelly and Barbara; and eight grandchildren: L.G. Robinson, Savannah Graves, Lily Graves, James Graham Boyd, Hugh Bissell Graves, Mary Emma Graves, Charles Simon Boyd and Samuel Robinson Boyd.
Kelly Simpson Assitant AD/Senior Woman Administrator Fourth Year ● Clemson ‘99
Kelly Simpson Kelly Simpson enters her fourth year as the Senior Woman Administrator for The Citadel athletic department and her sixth on The Citadel campus. As the SWA, she oversees The Citadel’s seven women’s sports programs in the areas of game management, academic advising and compliance. She is an active member of the SoCon Cross Country and Track and Field Committee and the SoCon Graduate Scholarship Committee and also serves on various campus committees. Prior to coming to the athletic department, Simpson spent one year as an admissions counselor in The Citadel’s office of admissions. Before that, she spent a year and a half in the Department of Health Exercise and Sport Science where she served as Director of Intramurals and a facility manager for Deas Hall. The past five years, Simpson has also served as an Adjuct Professor in the HESS Department. A native of Weaverville, N.C., Simpson attended Clemson University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management in 1999. She earned an M.S. in the same discipline from Clemson in 2001. While at Clemson, Simpson ran on the cross country and track teams and was a member of the Tigers’ 1999 ACC Championship Outdoor Track team. Simpson is married to The Citadel’s head men’s tennis coach, Toby Simpson.

Megan Chambers Assistant Direstor of Media Relations First Year ● Western Carolina ‘06
Megan Chambers
Megan Chambers is in her first year working with The Citadel Athletic Department. Chambers serves as the primary contact for women’s soccer and golf. She is the secondary contact for track and field and assists with day-to-day operations of The Citadel’s media relations office. Prior to joining The Citadel staff, Chambers served three years as a student assistant in the media relations department at Western Carolina University. During her time there, she primarily worked with men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. In addition to her media relations responsibilities, she assisted the marketing department in developing and executing marketing strategies. While at Western, Chambers was a four-year letterwinner for the women’s soccer team who, in 2005, claimed the school’s first women’s soccer Southern Conference tournament championship title. She was on the Southern Conference Honor Roll and Dean’s List all four years and graduated in 2006 with a bachelors degree in communication. Chambers is originally from Roswell, Ga. and is working towards a masters of science in health, exercise and sport science from The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies.

Brittney DuBuc Aly Wood head
Joining The Citadel Athletic Training staff in 2007, Brittney DuBuc will be working with the Bulldog soccer program. DuBuc will be an athletic training graduate assistant while attending The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies. DuBuc recently completed an internship as an athletic trainer at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia where she worked with the men’s soccer team. Prior to her internship at St. Joseph’s, DuBuc worked as an athletic training student at her alma mater, Central Michigan, where she graduated in 2006. While a student at Central Michigan, DuBuc worked with the Chippewa football, track and field and cross country teams. DuBuc also worked as an athletic trainer at Chippewa Hills High School in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. and was a volunteer athletic trainer at the Michigan Special Olympic Summer Games in 2005 and 2006. DuBuc also worked as an athletic trainer at the Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Championships in 2005. A native of New Lothrop, Mich., DuBuc currently resides in Charleston.
Donnell Boucher Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach First Year ● Worcester ‘06
Donnell Boucher Donnell Boucher joined the Bulldog staff as an assistant strength and conditioning coach this season after working as the head performance coach at Competitive Athlete Training Zone in Auburn, Mass. He most recently trained 8- to 25-year olds in stability coordination, reaction, speed, agility and acceleration. Boucher’s primary responsibilities at The Citadel will be strength and conditioning for basketball and assisting with football and soccer. Prior to his stint at Competitive Athlete Training Zone he was a volunteer strength and conditioning coach at Iona University. Boucher earned a bachelors degree in health education from Worcester State College where he was a four-year football letterman. As a three-year starter he was a recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award in 2004 and 2005. His strength and conditioning certifications include CPR/BLS Health Care Provider and AED, along with being a NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist.

2006 in Review The Citadel women’s soccer team made notable improvements in 2006 at the helm of first-year head coach Bob Winch. The Bulldogs preserved their perfect record against S.C. State, tied cross-town rival Charleston Southern, and battled two Southern Conference foes to overtime. Women’s soccer has made major strides since the inaugural 2001 season and the club is excited to see what the future of the program holds. The Bulldogs preserved a perfect 6-0 record over S.C. State (9/12) with a 3-0 victory. A pair of freshmen helped lead The Citadel to their first win of 2006 as Dianna Martin notched what proved to be the game-winner and Rachelle Ornelas tacked on a couple of insurance scores. Both freshmen enjoyed their first collegiate goals in the contest.
standpoint as the 2006 squad allowed the fewest goals of any Citadel women’s soccer team. Junior Brit Bunnell and freshman Emily Green made a combined 70 stops in front of the net, while only allowing 64 to get through. The defense only allowed 29 goals to SoCon opponents, by far the best of any Citadel club as the previous low was 48 set in 2005. Defenders Kristine Devine, Maggie Bryan, Aly Woodhead and Emily Haller made it difficult for opposing teams to get to the net, and all four will return to defend the posts next season. Keeper Bunnell became the all-time leader in saves at The Citadel, finishing the season with 232 career stops. The previous record of 226 was held by Angie Ellenwood who played for the Bulldogs from 2002-2005.
The Dogs then hosted Francis Marion and Youngstown State in The Citadel adidas Soccer Classic (9/15-17). The Bulldogs played two extremely close contests, but could not come up with a win. Senior Holli Knox and Ornelas both put The Citadel on the board, while Ornelas also recorded her first collegiate assist against Youngstown State. Her performance against S.C. State and YSU earned her Player of the Week accolades, only the second women’s soccer player in school history to receive such an honor. On the week, Ornelas tallied seven points on three goals and one assist.
Bunnell is not the only Bulldog leaving her mark on The Citadel’s record books. Ornelas was already setting records as a freshman. With seven goals on the season, Ornelas led the Bulldogs in scoring while tying Lauren Merchant and Kelly Pesterfield in single-season scores. Her seven goals were also enough to tie her for third in the SoCon. The freshman forward was also the first-ever women’s soccer player from The Citadel to receive All-SoCon accolades as she was named to the All-SoCon second team, as voted on by the league’s coaches.
After the tournament, The Citadel went on to battle Charleston Southern (9/20) to a 1-1 double overtime draw after falling 5-1 to the cross-town rivals in their first ever meeting in 2005. The Dogs also came extremely close to a Southern Conference victory as they took two conference foes to overtime. The Citadel battled Wofford (10/6) and Chattanooga (10/25) to two overtimes at WLI Field. The Terriers escaped with a 2-1 win, while the Dogs and Mocs ended in a 1-1 tie. “I feel our entire group learned a great deal this season,” said head coach Bob Winch. “We played in some games that we were very competitive in and some others that we were not so competitive in. We need to work hard every day in improving our level of play and conditioning from Oct. 30th, 2006 to Aug. 28th, 2007 if we are too compete with the higher level teams.” The most noticeable improvements were made from a defensive

The Dogs did graduate two seniors as Holli Knox and Kelly Hasselman were recognized for their hard work and dedication to such a young soccer program. Both players helped lay a foundation for future players to capitalize on. The Citadel returns eight starters next year, including sophomore Sarah Burke, who led the team in scoring her freshman season in 2005 and notched a team-high two assists this year. The Dogs will have four seniors to lead the squad in 2007 and Winch is hopeful about the fresh talent that he can recruit to The Citadel. “Our focus now will be on improving the student-athletes that are here now and recruiting more student-athletes to The Citadel,” commented Winch.

Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.
North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. This change was brought about due to the desire of many of those schools to schedule a greater number of regular season basketball games against local rivals.
The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.
Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford will officially join the league, brining membership of the conference to 12.
The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won the last two Football Championship Subdivision titles. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.
25th Anniversary of Women’s Championships
The Southern Conference will celebrate 25 years of women’s championships in 2007-08. A year-long celebration of women’s sports will highlight studentathletes, coaches and teams. Commissioner Ken Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The league crowns champions in nine women’s sports including cross country, soccer, volleyball, indoor track & field, basketball, tennis, golf, outdoor track & field and softball.
Membership History
The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. In 1922, six more schools - Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. A year later, the University of the South joined the ranks. VMI became a member in 1925 and Duke was added 1929. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions having been affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The first occurred in December 1932 when the Southeastern Conference was formed from the 23-school Southern Conference. The league’s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands that were present in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conference invited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond and Wake Forest to join the membership. Leadership
John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference. In nine years with the New Jersey-based league, Iamarino promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in 1974. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball Tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current SoCon logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corporate partners. He became the president of the Asheville franchise of the National Basketball Development League in 2001. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C. to historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts.
Championship History
The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The Southern Conference began sponsoring women’s sports during the 198384 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Southern Conference currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

Soccer Training Centers Educational Soccer Programs Centers of Excellence The “Centers of Excellence” philosophy is offered by the Bulldog Soccer Training Centers at The Citadel to assist our young students in coping with the many demands and pressures of a developing athlete and maturing in general. During every session our staff instructors will discuss such topics as academics, peer pressure, goal setting, nutrition, prevention of injuries and strength training and the importance of striving to be their best in all their endeavors. From the novice to the ODP advanced player, our curriculum is designed to meet your field player, goalkeeping and team needs. Through innovative and creative teaching methods, our goal is to create a positive learning environment for all players to enhance their physical and mental abilities, while striving to reach their full potential as a “Complete Soccer Player.”

This is The Citadel... The Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college with the mission of educating principled leaders through its Corps of Cadets. Males and females are admitted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through the College of Graduate Studies (CGPS) in the evening. The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. Academic programs at the college are complimented by a strong commitment to service and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction. Corps of Cadets ... All students at The Citadel are cadets in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and represent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period. Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The Citadel’s evening college serves the Lowcountry by offering nationally accredited bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees scheduled around the student’s profession, family and lifestyle. It is the wellknown Citadel academic excellence in a civilian environment. The CGPS offers 20 graduate programs with concentrations in education, psychology, computer science and business. The Master of Business Administration program is the only nationally accredited MBA program in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The CGPS also offers three undergraduate evening programs in business and engineering. The Citadel is the only college in South Carolina that offers an undergraduate civil and electrical engineering degree in the evening. Alumni... The Citadel graduation rate for all cadet-student-athletes who complete four years of eligibility ranges from 93 percent to 96 percent. The Citadel’s student-athletes consistently rank among the upper echelon of the Southern Conference. The football program has a graduation rate of 96 percent, which is among the top graduation rates in the nation.
The Citadel Earns U.S.News Rankings... The U.S. News and World Report rankings for 2007 recognize The Citadel in several different categories: the college ranks No. 3 for top public universities in the South offering up to a master’s degree; for the seventh straight year, The Citadel School of Engineering has ranked among the top 50 undergraduate engineering programs in the nation, earning this year’s No. 32 ranking; The Citadel ranked No. 7 for best master’s universities in the South.
Fulbright Scholars... Six cadets have received Fulbright Scholarships to study abroad since 2001. That is a larger number than any other college or university in South Carolina during this period.

The Citadel Earns No. 1 Ranking... The Citadel ranks No. 1 nationally in its peer group of public colleges in the percentage of students who graduate in four years. The Citadel’s top ranking comes from the U.S. Department of Education’s comparison of all public colleges whose entering students have average SAT scores between 1000 and 1200. The Citadel’s fouryear graduation rate is 59.7 percent. The national average four-year graduation rate is 29 percent.
Leader in Female Athletics... The Citadel is a national leader in the percentage of female students who are athletes. More than 50 percent of its female cadets compete on seven varsity teams, an outstanding achievement given the fact that female athletics started in 1997.
Campus The Citadel sits on a 300-acre tract of land on the Ashley River. There are 28 buildings grouped around a large (10-acre) grass parade ground. The buildings around the parade ground include 10 classroom buildings, an administrative building, four barracks, a student activities building, infirmary, chapel, a field house, and library. Just off the main campus are the football stadium, baseball stadium and alumni center.
