Previewing Women’s Cross Country Despite the graduation of two strong seniors in Laura Hewston and Amanda Rawl last year, the Bulldog Cross Country team is primed to field a successful, albeit young, team in 2007. The team will be led by a pair of (academic) juniors that were sidelined by injury last year. Megan Jenkins sat out last year’s cross country season due to a foot injury while Sarah Strickland suffered a stress fracture before the start of track season last spring. Jenkins and Strickland will be joined by fellow junior Erin Ritter who has been able to stay healthy and should be able to play a key role in the team’s success this year. A consistently healthy trio of Jenkins, Strickland and Ritter can prove to be a talented group of runners if they can remain healthy. All three posted impressive times as freshmen and should be competitive in 2007. Another group of talented runners who posted an impressive freshman season is this year’s sophomore class. Katheryn Gatewood was the team’s top runner for most of last season and posted Junior Sarah Strickland the fastest cross counhas recovered from a try 5k time in school stress fracture that side- history in her first meet lined her 2007 track sea- of the year. Natalie son and is primed to lead Wolin had an amazing freshman year and a young Bulldog squad on improved with each the course this year. passing week, running the sixth-fastest cross country 5k time in school history. Wolin ended up breaking Sharon Hacker’s indoor 3k and 5k school records during track season and set new freshman marks in the outdoor 3k and 5k. Added to that is sophomore Heather Harris and newcomers Suzanne Gay and Sarah Stierwalt. Harris improved every week throughout track season and should help push the freshmen to do well this fall. Like in 2006, the Southern Conference Championships – held in Cullowhee, N.C. this year – will be challenging due to the hilly nature of the course. Despite last year’s SoCon Championships being held in Chattanooga, Tenn., the women’s team posted a program-best eighth place.
Previewing Men’s Cross Country With the graduation of the top three runners from the past two years (Matt Holmes, Charles Kutz and Will Wilson), the 2007 season will surely be a rebuilding year. However, a lot of talent still remains on a young team that is led by sophomores Brendan Kight and Daniel Knight. That duo will anchor the 2007 squad and they will be aided by seniors Steven Craig and Rob Isaac. With five other returnees and 11 newcomers, this year’s top five is up for grabs. Kight and Knight both had excellent freshman years. Rarely is a freshman able to run in the top five but to have two achieve such a feat last year was a pleasant surprise for the team. That success carried into the track season where Kight broke the 3k freshman school outdoor record, running 9:06.98. Many questions follow the newcomers but there is considerable talent joining the ranks of the Corps this fall. Freshman Chris Fallis is a well-recognized local runner with tremendous skill in the longer distances. His transition to the college distance race should be smooth as he enjoys running the 8k and 10k. Fallis has lots of experience running half-marathons A young men’s cross counand full marathons. Freshman Zach Yereb try team will rely on sehails from Ohio, a state nior Rob Isaac’s leadership loaded with talented dis- in 2007. tance runners. Yereb brings a sub-10:00 two mile time – a mark that would have him challenge for the South Carolina high school state title. Accustomed to hills, Yereb is looking forward to running flat courses and his experience in the hilly terrain will be invaluable later in the season, especially for the Southern Conference Championships. Freshman AJ Russell is another northerner who is used to hills and should make an impact this year in cross country and track. Alex Anderson is a transfer from Florida International University that brings experience in the collegiate distance and is someone that has already made a transition to the college level. Anderson was a solid high school runner and is looking to be a better fit in a program like The Citadel’s. Joseph Tkach is an 800m runner that hopes to find his spot in the top seven and will use cross country as a springboard for training for track season. Sophomore Bryan Lailson has the opportunity to make an impact this season if he can stay healthy. Lailson was primed to be a top runner last year before a late-season injury set him back. The schedule is as competitive as years past with The Citadel Invitational and the Walt Disney World Classic highlighting the 2007 slate. For the second consecutive year, a hilly course is set for the SoCon Championships and the team will have to rely on past high school experience with that type of course.

Jody Huddleston Head Coach 22nd Year South Alabama ‘77 Entering his 22nd year at The Citadel, head cross country and track and field coach Jody Huddleston continues to lead one of the most successful programs at The Citadel and in the Southern Conference. Huddleston’s tenure has witnessed 52 conference champions, 211 All-Southern Conference honors bestowed, the first woman to compete in athletics at The Citadel, the first woman to win a conference championship at The Citadel and the first woman to compete in an NCAA Championship event in school history. In addition, The Citadel has set six NCAA Regional qualifying marks under Huddleston’s tenure since the implementation of the regional championship system in 2003. The 2007 season witnessed Huddleston leading four Southern Conference Championships brought home to Charleston as the women’s team recorded their best finish in school history. Senior Stephanie McNeill brought home three individual titles (20lb. weight throw, hammer, shot put) while junior Tasha Sanders won her first SoCon crown (heptathlon). The Citadel women placed a record fifth at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Boone, N.C., scoring a program-best 56 points. The men’s team showcased a stellar hurdles squad, placing two finalists in the 110m hurdles and three in the 400m hurdles at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. The fourth place finish by the men’s team marks the seventh time in the past eight years the Bulldog men have finished fourth. Huddleston led the Bulldogs through the historic 2006 track and field seasons, which included then-junior Stephanie McNeill entering the history books on several separate occasions and the women’s team doubling their best performance at a conference championship. McNeill set history by becoming the first woman from the Military College of South Carolina to qualify for an NCAA Championship event, throwing a qualifying mark of 47’ 9” in the shot put. McNeill won her flight in the shot put at the NCAA Regional Championships with a throw of 46’ 10.25” as she finished 15th overall. The women’s team finished sixth at the SoCon Outdoor Championships with a school record 48 team points scored. Huddleston, along with assistant coach Kris Kut, coached McNeill as she won the 2006 Southern Conference discus title with a throw of 141’ 2”, making her the first female cadet to win a SoCon Championship. Those accomplishments, along with regional and national media exposure, came in a 2006 track and field season that saw 22 school records broken, 19 athletes receiving All-Conference honors, three SoCon Athlete of the Week honors, two conference champions and two conference superlative honors. Moreover, McNeill was named the SoCon’s Outstanding Field Performer and freshman Shaquill Smith was tabbed as Freshman of the Year after he won the high jump, placed fifth in the triple jump as he set a new freshman school record (47’ 4.25”) and placed eighth in the long jump. The Huddleston Family (L-R): Huddleston’s program first broke into the national headlines in the fall of 1997 when Mandy Garcia became the school’s first-ever Jody Huddleston, female cadet-student-athlete and attracted unprecedented national Mary Ellen and Mary Kathryn. media exposure as she set history. Garcia served as the lone member of the women’s cross country, indoor track and outdoor track “team” that year. Two years later, Peaches Hudson took second in the heptathlon and captured the institution’s first female All-Southern Conference honor. Huddleston came to The Citadel from Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Okla., where he served as head coach for seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIA District IX Coach of the Year honors. Earlier that year, the Bison finished second at the league championships, the best track performance for the school in 10 years. An All-America decathlete at Florida Community College, Huddleston set a new national junior college decathlon long jump record in 1975. He transferred to South Alabama and went on to establish two school records. Huddleston graduated from South Alabama in 1977 with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education. He earned a master’s degree in education two years later at that same institution. Huddleston has three children, Ryan (22) and Callie (17) while he and his wife, Mary Ellen, have one daughter, Mary Kathryn (2).

Kris Kut Assistant Coach Eighth Year The Citadel ‘00 Kris Kut enters his eighth year as a coach at The Citadel and his second as the recruiting coordinator. Along with Jody Huddleston, Kut has been on staff with the cross country and track and field programs through the past several years and has watched from the sidelines as school records have fallen over and over again. Kut, who focuses mainly on the field events, has helped coach 16 conference champions during his tenure at The Citadel, including the school’s first female to win a conference championship, Stephanie McNeill. Kut guided McNeill to a total of four SoCon titles as she also became the first female from The Citadel to qualify and compete in an NCAA Championship event. Under his tutelage, The Citadel’s cadet-student-athletes have won 110 All-Conference honors and numerous school records have fallen, including 23 during the 2007 season and 45 over the past two seasons. In 2007, Kut guided McNeill to three league titles while coaching cadet-student-athletes to 27 All-Southern Conference honors. The women’s team posted a record fifth-place finish at the SoCon Outdoor Championships while the men’s team placed fourth for the seventh time in eight years, maintaining their presence in the top-half of the conference. Kut, a 2000 graduate from The Citadel, was a four-year letterwinner at The Military College of South Carolina as he pursued his bachelor’s degree in political science. He remained at the school as he earned his master’s degree in health, exercise and sport science in 2003. A three-time Southern Conference Champion as a cadet-student-athlete, Kut also received four All-Conference honors. He remains the school record holder in the javelin and was a junior national qualifier, competing in the 1997 Junior National Track and Field meet in St. Louis, Mo. As a senior, Kut finished seventh in the javelin at the prestigious Penn Relays, as well as first at several other key meets. Born Jan. 20, 1978, Kut married the former Holly Jones of Mechanicsville, Va., in 2003. They currently reside in Mount Pleasant, S.C., with their three-year old son Andre Jackson and their one-year old son, Preston.
Gary Wilson Volunteer Assistant Coach Second Year Oklahoma Baptist ‘64 Gary Wilson enters his second year working with The Citadel cross country program, following an incredibly successful first year. In his first season, Wilson helped lead the women’s cross country team to their most successful Southern Conference finish ever while the men placed sixth, their highest finish in 10 years. Wilson has a long history of success with track and field, qualifying three athletes for the NCAA Championships when he was a volunteer coach for Valdosta State in 1976. As a co-coach at the University of Tennessee, he helped lead the Lady Vols in the program’s first year. Prior to his helping start what has become one of the most competitive and successful women’s programs in the Southeastern Conference, Wilson was the head men’s track and cross country coach at West Georgia College from 1966-1968. Wilson currently resides in Charleston.
Catherine Meggs Volunteer Assistant Coach First Year Erskine College ‘06 Catherine Meggs enters her first year working with The Citadel cross country program in 2007, mainly working with the female runners. A 2006 graduate of Erskine College, Meggs ran cross country for the Flying Fleet while serving as the team captain her junior and senior year. Meggs was also a member of the prestigious Omicron Delta Kappa honor society. A USATF Level I Certified coach, Meggs is currently working towards a master’s degree in health, exercise and sport science in The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies. Meggs enjoys competing in triathlons and participating in yoga and hiking in her spare time.

2006 In Review THREE BULLDOGS RANKED IN SOCON TOP 20 Three Bulldogs recorded some of the top times in the Southern Conference last season. It all started in the first meet of the year when freshman Katheryn Gatewood ran a school record 18:59 time at the USC Invitational on Sept. 1. That time placed her 17th in the conference. On the men’s side, senior Matt Holmes’ 25:54 mark at the Walt Disney World Classic tied for the 14th fastest time in the conference last year. Fellow senior Will Wilson also had a stellar mark at the Walt Disney World Classic as his time of 26:04 ranked 16th in the SoCon. GATEWOOD OPENS CAREER WITH SCHOOL RECORD Freshman Katheryn Gatewood started her career off not only on the right foot, but also by recording a school record. The freshman from El Paso, Texas ran the 5k in 18:59 at the USC Invitational (9/1) in the team’s first meet of the season, shattering the old top mark by 0:09 (19:08) which was set by current teammate and team captain Laura Hewston at The Citadel Invitational in 2004. THREE PRs SET AT CITADEL INVITE Three PRs were set by Bulldogs at The Citadel Invitational (9/30). Sophomore Sarah Strickland beat her old cross country top time by more than 25 seconds as she ran the sixth fastest 5k time in school history (19:21), finishing sixth overall. Meanwhile, senior Amanda Rawl shaved nearly 40 seconds off her top mark, running 20:26 in the race. On the men’s side, senior Matt Holmes placed fifth with a PR time of 26:24, 20 seconds better than his previous best.
THE CITADEL MEN 5-6-7 The Citadel Men’s team finished second at The Citadel Invitational, propelled by a 5-6-7 finish. Matt Holmes lead the Cadets wtih a time of 26:24 and was followed by Will Wilson with a mark of 27:04. Charles Kutz rounded out the trio, running 27:11. WILSON WINS X2 Senior Will Wilson got a great start to the 2006 cross country season by taking home the individual crown at the USC Invitational in Columbia, S.C. His time of 15:47 edged the 15:50 mark set by the College of Charleston’s Max Gustaitis. Wilson continued his winning streak with a victory at the Bulldog Duals, winning in the wet grass and mud created by Tropical Storm Florence. GUSTAITIS COULDN’T CATCH WILSON The College of Charleston’s Max Gustaitis has struggled early on to catch The Citadel senior Will Wilson. In both of the teams’ meets this season, Wilson has edged Gustaitis by 0:03, at the USC Invitational and at the Bulldog Duals. It took Gustaitis three tries to finally top Wilson, edging him at The Citadel Invitational. USC INVITE A SOCON SHOWCASE The 2006 South Carolina Invitational turned into a SoCon Showcase on the men’s side as SoCon schools finished 1-2-3. Elon took home the team title while the College of Charleston (48 points) and The Citadel (50 points) finished a close second and third, respectively.

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina
This is The Citadel
The Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college with the mission of educating principled leaders through its Corps of Cadets. Males and females are admitted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through the College of Graduate Studies (CGPS) in the evening.
The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied history. Located in Charleston, S.C., the institution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experience that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. Citadel graduates say that the disciplined lifestyle and friendships they forged here have a profoundly positive effect on their lives. With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s largest military college program outside the service academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the graduating seniors earn military commissions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market. The College of Graduate and Professional Studies, which is noted for Citadel excellence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,200 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Academic programs at the college are complimented by a strong commitment to service and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction. Corps of Cadets ... All students at The Citadel are cadets in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and represent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period.
Leader in Female Athletics...
The Citadel is a national leader in the percentage of female students who are athletes. More than 50 percent of its female cadets compete on seven varsity teams - an outstanding achievement given the fact that female athletics started in 1997.
This is The Citadel
Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation.
Academic Programs... Because of the strength of the academic program, The Citadel has repeatedly been rated as a top regional institution in the annual rankings issued by U.S. News and World Report. The quality of the education at The Citadel combined with the availability of financial aid, the credentials of the faculty and the graduation rate earned the institution the citation of Best College Value in the South in 1999. With an average of 75 percent of its students returning each year, The Citadel enjoys one of the best retention records in the country. The Citadel’s 14 academic departments offer five bachelor’s degrees in 17 areas, six master’s degrees in 17 areas, and specialist degrees in two areas. College of Graduate & Professional Studies... The Citadel’s evening college serves the Lowcountry by offering nationally accredited bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees scheduled around the student’s profession, family and lifestyle. It is the well-known Citadel academic excellence in a civilian environment. The CGPS offers 20 graduate programs with concentrations in education, psychology, computer science and business. The Master of Business Administration program is the only nationally accredited MBA program in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The CGPS also offers three undergraduate evening programs in business and engineering.

The Citadel is the only college in South Carolina that offers an undergraduate civil and electrical engineering degree in the evening. Alumni... Generations of Citadel graduates have served their nation, their state and their community with distinction. The Citadel graduates men and women with alert minds and sound bodies, who value honor, integrity, loyalty and patriotism, and who accept the responsibilities that accompany leadership.
