Jody HUDDLESTON
Head Coach l 23rd Year South Alabama ‘77
Entering his 23rd year at The Citadel, head cross country and track and field coach Jody Huddleston continues to lead one of the most successful programs at The Citadel and in the Southern Conference. Huddleston’s tenure has witnessed 53 conference champions, 227 All-Southern Conference honors bestowed, the first woman to compete in athletics at The Citadel, the first woman to win a conference championship at The Citadel and the first woman to compete in an NCAA Championship event in school history. In addition, The Citadel has set six NCAA Regional qualifying marks under Huddleston’s tenure since the implementation of the regional championship system in 2003. The 2008 season witnessed hurdler Jamel Brown winning the first SoCon Championship for any made cadet-student-athlete at The Citadel since 2004 as Brown brought home the 400m hurdles title from the SoCon Outdoor Championships. That victory was one of Brown’s four All-Conference accolades in 2008. Huddleston also guided senior Tasha Sanders to three All-Conference honors and a pair of runner-up finishes at the SoCon Championships in the pentathlon and heptathlon. The 2007 season witnessed Huddleston leading four Southern Conference Championships home to Charleston while the women’s team recorded their best finish in school history. Senior Stephanie McNeill brought home three individual titles (20lb. weight throw, hammer, shot put) while junior Tasha Sanders won her first SoCon crown (heptathlon). The Citadel women placed a record fifth at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Boone, N.C., scoring a program-best 56 points. The men’s team showcased a stellar hurdles squad, placing two finalists in the 110m hurdles and three in the 400m hurdles at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. The fourth place finish by the men’s team marks the seventh time in the past eight years the Bulldog men have finished fourth. Huddleston led the Bulldogs through the historic 2006 track and field seasons, which included then-junior Stephanie McNeill entering the history books on several separate occasions and the women’s team doubling their best performance at a conference championship. McNeill set history by becoming the first female from the Military College of South Carolina to qualify for an NCAA Championship event, throwing a quali-

fying mark of 47’ 9” in the shot put. McNeill won her flight in the shot put at the NCAA Regional Championships with a throw of 46’ 10.25” as she finished 15th overall. The women’s team finished sixth at the SoCon Outdoor Championships with a school record 48 team points. Huddleston, along with assistant coach Kris Kut, coached McNeill as she won the 2006 Southern Conference discus title with a throw of 141’ 2”, making her the first female Cadet to win a SoCon Championship. Those accomplishments, along with regional and national media exposure, came in a 2006 track and field season that saw 22 school records broken, 19 athletes receiving All-Conference honors, three SoCon Athlete of the Week honors, two conference champions and two conference superlative honors. Moreover, McNeill was named the SoCon’s Outstanding Field Performer and freshman Shaquill Smith was tabbed as Freshman of the Year after he won the high jump, placed fifth in the triple jump as he set a new freshman school record (47’ 4.25”) and placed eighth in the long jump. Huddleston’s program first broke into the national headlines in the fall of 1997 when Mandy Garcia became the school’s first-ever female cadet-student-athlete and attracted unprecedented national media exposure as she set history. Garcia served as the lone memThe Huddleston Family (L-R): ber of the women’s cross country, indoor track Jody Huddleston, and outdoor track “team” that year. Two years Mary Ellen and Mary Kathryn. later, Peaches Hudson took second in the heptathlon and captured the institution’s first female All-Southern Conference honor. Huddleston came to The Citadel from Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Okla., where he served as head coach for seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIA District IX Coach of the Year honors. Earlier that year, the Bison finished second at the league championships, the best track performance for the school in 10 years. An All-America decathlete at Florida Community College, Huddleston set a new national junior college decathlon long jump record in 1975. He transferred to South Alabama and went on to establish two school records. Huddleston graduated from South Alabama in 1977 with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education. He earned a master’s degree in education two years later at the same institution. Huddleston has three children, Ryan (23) and Callie (18) while he and his wife, Mary Ellen, have one daughter, Mary Kathryn (3).

Kris KUT
Assistant Coach l Ninth Year The Citadel ‘00 Kris Kut enters his ninth year as a coach at The Citadel and his second as the recruiting coordinator. Along with Jody Huddleston, Kut has been on staff with the cross country and track and field programs through the past several years and has watched from the sidelines as school records have fallen over and over again. Kut, who focuses mainly on the field events, has helped coach 16 conference champions during his tenure at The Citadel, including the school’s first female to win a conference championship, Stephanie McNeill. Kut guided McNeill to a total of four SoCon titles as she also became the first female from The Citadel to qualify and compete in an NCAA Championship event. Under his tutelage, The Citadel’s cadet-student-athletes have won 136 All-Conference honors and numerous school records have fallen, including 23 during the 2007 season and 45 over the past two seasons. In 2007, Kut guided McNeill to three league titles while coaching cadet-studentathletes to 27 All-Southern Conference honors. The women’s team posted a record fifth-place finish at the SoCon Outdoor Championships, while the men’s team placed fourth for the seventh time in eight years, maintaining their presence in the top-half of the conference. Kut, a 2000 graduate from The Citadel, was a four-year letterwinner at The Military College of South Carolina as he pursued his bachelor’s degree in political science. He remained at the school as he earned his master’s degree in health, exercise and sport science in 2003. A three-time Southern Conference Champion as a cadet-student-athlete, Kut also received four All-Conference honors. He remains the school record holder in the javelin and was a junior national qualifier, competing in the 1997 Junior National Track and Field meet in St. Louis, Mo. As a senior, Kut finished seventh in the javelin at the prestigious Penn Relays, as well as first at several other key meets. Born Jan. 20, 1978, Kut married the former Holly Jones of Mechanicsville, Va., in 2003. His presidency has been marked by a keen focus on strategic initiatives that will enhance The Citadel’s mission of developing principled leaders. Since Rosa became president, The Citadel has increased the size of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and completed a $100 million capital campaign -- two benchmarks of a vibrant institution. Rosa was born in Springfield, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. He remained in that position until his retirement from active duty in November 2005. Rosa then returned to Charleston to become president of his alma mater. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. And he has studied at the John F. 2007 In Review
NCAA Regional Weekend Three runners from The Citadel traveled to the Derby City on Nov. 10 with all three posting personal record times as the Bulldogs competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Louisville, Ky. Sophomore Katheryn Gatewood led the way in the 6k race with a time of 23:40. Gatewood’s time of 23:40 is the second-fastest 6k time in school history. That mark is the fourth-fastest time in the Bulldog record books. Junior Sarah Strickland, who ran 25:03 at the 2005 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Greenville, N.C., finished the 2007 race in 24:15 as she finished 195th.
Southern Conference Success The Citadel’s cross country teams both finished eighth at the 2007 Southern Conference Championships as several runners posted season and personal-best marks. Muddy Day at Disney Despite extremely wet and muddy conditions, The Citadel cross country team recorded a successful day at the Walt Disney World Classic as the men’s team finished 12th and the women’s team placed 14th out of 44 teams. Sophomores led both teams with the secondyear Cadets finishing as the top two runners for The Citadel in both the men’s and women’s races. Sophomore Daniel Knight led the men with a seasonbreakout performance, running a personal record 26:57 as he finished 47th out of over 300 runners. Despite running in ankle-deep mud, sophomore Katheryn Gatewood still ran an impressive 19:49, placing 70th out of the 366-member field in the women’s race. Banner Day at The Citadel Invite Brendan Kight set a personal record by almost half a minute while Natalie Wolin and Sarah Strickland just missed out on setting personal records of their own as The Citadel posted a banner day at the 27th Annual Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park. Robert Killian ‘04 led the alumni team, Team Mule, with a thirdplace finish in the men’s 8k race. The Citadel Places Second in Bulldog Duals The Citadel women placed second in the Bulldog Duals for the second consecutive year while the men’s team finished second in 2007. Sophomore Natalie Wolin led the Bulldogs for the second time in the season, running the 5k course in 19:24, finishing fourth. The men’s team was led by Brendan Kight as the sophomore ran the 5k distance in 16:46.

The 28th Annual Citadel Invitational James Island County Park l James Island, S.C. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008
One of the premier cross country meets in South Carolina, The Citadel Invitational is annually held on the last weekend in September at James Island County Park and is a showcase of cross country talent from the South. The first invitational was held at Middleton Plantation in 1981 and was a 5k race for the women and a 10k for the men. The first women’s team champion in Division I was Davidson College (there were no Division II women’s team entered the first four years). The Division I men’s champion was Baptist College (now Charleston Southern University) and for Division II was USC Spartanburg (now USC Upstate). In 1982 the race was moved to Charles Towne Landing and was run in the birth place of Charleston for the next 19 years until it moved to James Island County Park in 2001. The 1989 race was moved to the campus of Francis Marion College in Florence as the course at Charles Towne Landing was totally destroyed by Hurricane Hugo just two weeks prior to the race. The women’s Division I meet and course record at Charles Towne Landing is held by Gail Pennachio of Furman University with a time of 17:21. The Division II record is held by Sylvia Sanchez of Florida Community College with a time of 18:31. On the men’s
side, the Division I 10k record is 30:48 held by Al Dunn from Baptist College and by Mitch Powell from Francis Marion College for Division II in a time of 31:31. The men’s race distance was shortened to 8k in 1985. Seamus Powers from East Tennessee State University holds the Division I course and meet record of 23:51, established in 1993. The men’s Division II course and meet record is held by Jay Jones of Pembroke State (now UNC-Pembroke) with a time of 24:45. High schools were invited to participate in 1995 with Heathwood Hall winning the girls division and Sumter high school winning the boys. Joyce Peebles of Pendleton won the inaugural girls race in a time of 20:45 while Mike Wilson from North Myrtle Beach won the boys race in 17:03. The course record for the high school girl’s race at Charles Towne Landing was set in 2000 as Jocelyn Veit of Lexington High School ran 19:17. The boys course and meet record was set by David Patterson of Cardinal Gibbon’s High School in 1996 with a time of 15:55. The inaugural races at James Island County Park were run on the “Lake Course” and move to the “Meadow Course” the following year.

This is The Citadel The Military College of South Carolina
The Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college with the mission of educating principled leaders through its Corps of Cadets. Males and females are admitted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through The Citadel Graduate College (CGC) in the evening.
This is Bulldog Cross Country
The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied history. Located in Charleston, S.C., the institution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experience that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. Graduates of The Citadel say that the disciplined lifestyle and friendships they forged here have a profoundly positive effect on their lives. With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s largest military college program outside the service academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the graduating seniors earn military commissions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market. The Citadel Graduate College, which is noted for The Citadel excellence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,700 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Academic programs at the college are complimented by a strong commitment to service and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction. Corps of Cadets ... All undergraduate students at The Citadel are members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and represent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period. Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation. Academic Programs... Because of the strength of the academic program,The Citadel has repeatedly been rated as a top regional institution in the annual rankings issued by U.S. News and World Report. The quality of the education at The Citadel combined with the availability of financial aid, the credentials of the faculty and the graduation rate earned the institution the citation of Best College Value in the South in 2007. With more than 80 percent of its students returning each year, The Citadel enjoys one of the best retention records in the country. The Citadel’s 14 aca-

demic departments offer five bachelor’s degrees in 17 areas, six master’s degrees in 17 areas and specialist degrees in two areas. Cadet-Student-Athletes... The Citadel leads South Carolina with the highest four-year Graduation Rate at 62.4 percent, while the national average is only 30 precent.
The Citadel ranks No. 3 nationally among public colleges and universities in the Carnegie classification in the percentage of students who graduate in four years. That category includes colleges with master’s level programs. The Princeton Review for 2006 named The Citadel School of Business one of the nation’s 237 best business programs. Among South Carolina’s public colleges and universities, The Citadel has the highest four-year graduation rate for athletes. More than 90 percent of cadet-student-athletes who have exhausted their four years of eligibility earn a diploma. The Princeton Review for 2006 placed The Citadel in its top tier of academic institutions according to an academic ranking that measures how hard students work and how much they get back for their efforts. The ranking considered such factors as hours students study outside of class, quality of the student body, class size, student assessment of professors and other resources. The Citadel Graduate College... The Citadel’s evening college serves the Lowcountry by offering nationally accredited bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees scheduled around the student’s profession, family and lifestyle. It is the well-known Citadel academic excellence in a civilian environment. The CGC offers 20 graduate programs with concentrations in education, psychology, computer science and business. The Master of Business Administration program is the only nationally accredited MBA program in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The CGC also offers three undergraduate evening programs in business and engineering. The Citadel is the only college in South Carolina that offers undergraduate civil and electrical engineering degrees in the evening.

Cadets receive gold stars for earning a 3.7 GPA or higher. The stars are worn on both sides of the colar of their dress uniforms and above the left pocket of their summer leave uniforms.
Alumni... Generations of Citadel graduates have served their nation, their state and their community with distinction. The Citadel graduates men and women with alert minds and sound bodies, who value honor, integrity, loyalty and patriotism, and who accept the responsibilities that accompany leadership. The Citadel remains a stronghold of duty, self-discipline and high ideals in a changing American society.

Band of Gold
The Citadel Ring: Symbolizing Unity Between Graduates
This is Bulldog Cross Country
Traditionally received during Parents’ Weekend by first class cadets, The Citadel ring symbolizes honor and the unity between The Citadel graduates. Worn proudly by alumni of all ages, cadets look forward to the day that they will be able to wear this band of gold with pride.
38
The ring has symbolized outstanding accomplishments both by the Corps of Cadets and South Carolina. Perhaps the most popular feature of the ring is the “Star of the West”, which commemorates the firing on a Union supply steamer by a detachment of Citadel cadets in January, 1861. This action was the powder keg which set off the War Between the States. Every aspect of the ring is symbolic of the history and tradition of the Corps of Cadets from the Mexican War through both World Wars, to the present day. The Citadel is a military college and the leadership, courage and integrity found in good officers is embodied by the sword, found on the left shank of the ring. Crossing the sword is the rifle, the symbol of the infantry. Of equal importance in this world of political aggrandizement and perpetual military conflict are the concepts of freedom acquired and maintained only through a willingness to fight for it, represented by the rifle surmounted by the oak leaves of toughness and victory blessed by peace, represented by the laurel wreath. On the right shank of the ring are found the United States and South Carolina flags, which depict the unity of the state and federal government. The cannon balls at the bottom of this shank indicate the continuing link between the Old Citadel on Marion Square and the Greater Citadel. When the college moved to its present location, the Civil War cannon balls piled before the Old Citadel were left behind. The oval crest has a reproduction of the Palmetto tree in its background. Aside from representing the state tree of South Carolina, the Palmetto symbolizes a cadet-trained regiment of infantry that fought in the Mexican War and it represents a fort, built of Palmetto logs, that repelled a large British invasion fleet during the Revolutionary War. The two oval shields at the base of the tree are replicas of the state seals.
Why The Citadel “What you tolerate, you define.”
“Without question, The Citadel experience opened a world of opportunity for me. I can think of no better preparation for the things I have done or hope to do.” Dr. Harvey W. Schiller, ‘60 Former Executive Director, U.S. Olympic Committee “...I read this friendly advice in the book: ‘When you receive an order, carry it out to the best of your ability. Never argue or offer suggestions which you think might be better. This is not in your best interest.’ Well, it seems to me that The Citadel has a few things to teach the Cabinet and the Executive Branch, too! In fact, maybe we should just put the whole federal government through cadet training!” The Honorable Ronald Reagan 40th President of the United States “What you tolerate, you define. And that is what makes this institution so unique. Regardless of class or cadet rank, The Citadel graduate more than anything else carries the reputation for integrity that is unsurpassed by any institution in his nation.” The Honorable Steve Buyer, ‘80 U.S. Congressman “At the center of The Citadel education, that rock that anchors it’s soul, is the honor system. I found the honor system simple and profound; majestic and life-changing: A cadet does not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate those who do.” Pat Conroy, ‘67 Award-winning author

“The Citadel is a place of pride and tradition. A place where the standards are high, the discipline is strong and leaders are born. The men and women of this institution represent a sense of honor and accomplishment. And I am proud to be with you today.”... “in all that is to come, I know the graduates of The Citadel will bring credit to America, to the military and to this great institution. In the words of your school song, you will go where you’ve always gone... ‘in the paths our fathers showed us. Peace and Honor, God and Counrty -- we will fight for thee.’” The Honorable George W. Bush 43rd President of the United States
“Citadel graduates have become successfull leaders in both the public and the private sectors, as well as having been involved in every American military conflict since the Mexican war. Thanks to its effective teaching tecniques, The Citadel has earned an enviable reputation as one of the best public colleges in the United States, and there is not a better military school anywhere in this nation than The Citadel.” Robert “Bob” Dole U.S. Senator

Honor
“A Cadet does not Lie, Cheat, or Steal, nor Tolerate those who do.”
This is Bulldog Cross Country
The Honor Code is fairly simple. This code, while simple, offers the key to living and maintaining an honorable life. Cadets are trained that there is never a situation in which they should participate in, or tolerate, dishonorable activities. These core values of honor and integrity are exactly the values which allow Citadel cadets and alumni to improve their organizations and their communities.
40
Honor is the most cherished principle at The Citadel. In today’s post-corporate-scandal society, honor, integrity and ethics are in high demand. The Citadel strives to achieve excellence in the education of principled leaders, also known as the “whole person” concept. The Honor Code encompasses all aspects of cadet life, from academic integrity to personal integrity. It has evolved from an unwritten tradition known as the “code of the gentleman” to a formalized code in September of 1955, when the Corps of Cadets unanimously voted to establish The Honor Code. The development of a cadet into a principled leader is a four-tiered process that includes knowing, adhering, believing, and leading. Its culmination is seen in the cadets who internalize the Code and the alumni who continually apply it throughout their lives. Cadet Prayer Almighty God, the source of light and strength, we implore Thy blessing on this our beloved institution, that it may continue true to its high purposes. Guide and strengthen those upon whom rests the authority of government; enlighten with wisdom those who teach and those who learn; and grant to all of us that through sound learning and firm leadership, we may prove ourselves worthy citizens of our country, devoted to truth, given to unselfish service, loyal to every obligation of life and above all to Thee. Preserve us faithful to the ideals of The Citadel, sincere in fellowship, unswerving in duty, finding joy in purity and confidence through a steadfast faith. Grant to each one of us, in his/her own life, a humble heart, a steadfast purpose, and a joyful hope, with a readiness to endure hardship and suffer if need be, that truth may prevail among us and that Thy will may be done on earth. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
Leadership
Conquering Challenges Through Patience, Persistence, Discipline, Determination, Teamwork and Hardwork Cadet Creed I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of The Citadel and the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically tough, and morally straight, and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be.
And under no circumstances will I ever bring discredit to The Citadel and the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.
•
Graduates of The Citadel succeed because they know what it takes to meet a challenge in any field: patience and persistence, discipline and determination, teamwork and hardwork. The Citadel emphasizes athletic competition as a way to build leaders, learn teamwork and prepare for life’s challenges. Physical fitness represents a vital component of every Cadet’s experience. Sir, Yes, Sir • Sir, No, Sir Sir, No Excuse, Sir “...three permissible knob answers:‘Sir, yes, sir’ and ‘Sir, no, sir’ and—I liked this third one best of all—’Sir, no excuse, sir.’ By golly, I think, we ought to send the entire U.S. Congress down here to learn answer number three.” The Honorable Ronald Reagan 40th President of the United States May 15, 1993

Gallantly will I show the world that I am a well-trained cadet. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress, and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.
Whatever their major, all cadets will graduate with a “dual degree” in leadership. They learn about attention to detail, respect, time management, and discipline. “Leadership is about integrity, trust and people. The Citadel, with its mission to prepare graduates to be pricipled leaders, is all about integrity, trust and people. There is no question in my mind that, had I not attended The Citadel to learn these values, I would not have come close to achieving what success I have been fortunate enough to achieve.” L. William Krause, ‘63 Retired Chairman of 3COM Corporation
