2008 SEASON OUTLOOK
BULLDOGS ARE VERY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT 2008 SEASON
The Citadel is looking to have a great year in 2008 after a rebuilding year in 2007 and a great recruiting class. The Bulldogs return 11 starting players from last season and are adding nine fresh faces to the roster. However, the Bulldogs lost goalkeeper Brittni Bunnell, defender Aly Woodhead, and midfielder Ana Miranda. Bunnell ended her career as the all-time saves leader at The Citadel. Third-year head coach Bob Winch is very optimistic about the upcoming season.
Goalkeepers
With the loss of Bunnell, the Bulldogs will look to Junior Emily Green to be tenacious in the goal. Green already has a total of 108 saves, placing her fifth in career saves in her short career at The Citadel, and has recorded over 1,400 minutes protecting the net. She will be a huge factor for the Bulldogs in 2008. The Citadel also added depth to the goalkeeper position during the signing period after inking Whitney Nave from Greencastle, Pa., and Laura Serafino from Maple Ontario, Canada. Therefore, there will be plenty of competition for Green this offseason.
Defenders
Returning for the Bulldogs on defense is junior Kristine Devine, who has anchored the Bulldog defense for two seasons now, seniors Laura Curran and Danielle DiFiore, and sophomore Jessica Stewart. The Citadel also added depth to their defense by signing two in-state players, Leah Hawkins from Florence, S.C., and Miranda Johnson from Lexington, S.C., The depth of the defense should provide for a very competitive off-season which will ready the Bulldogs for the 2008 season.
Emily Green
CITADELSPORTS.COM
Midfielders
The Bulldogs’ midfield has been impressive in recent years and this season is no different. The midfield is comprised of senior Emily Haller, who recorded two goals and an assist in 2007, junior Dianna Martin, who also scored two goals in 2007, and sophomore Jessa Scott, The Citadel’s leading scorer in 2007 with six goals. The Bulldogs will look to freshmen Hannah Warne, of Sarasota, Fla., Angela Foyt, of Houston, Texas, and Shanna Couch of Kansas City, Kan., to add to the strength of the midfield.
Forwards
The biggest question mark for the Bulldogs will be the attack of their forwards. The Bulldogs lost five matches in 2007 by only one or two goals and will work hard in the off-season to try and turn the tide in their favor. The Citadel returns senior ViVi Brown and sophomores Dominic Snyder and Nicole Martinoli. The Bulldogs will also have junior college transfer Nikki Mares, who was redshirted in 2007, and fellow freshmen Canadians Nikkita Persaud and Amy Loughran from Ontario. Solid play from the forwards could result in a big season for the Bulldogs.
Schedule
The Citadel will open their season by hosting Gardner-Webb on Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. at Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field. They will then travel across town to face rival Charleston Southern at Buccaneer Field on Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs will then head up to Huntington, W.Va. to compete in the Marshall University adidas Soccer Classic where they will meet Marshall at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12 and Mount St. Mary at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7. The Dogs will re-
Kristine Devine
turn to WLI Field for a Sunday afternoon match against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 14, and will then try to defend a seven-game win streak in the all-time series against South Carolina State the following Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. That weekend they will make a quick road trip to USC Upstate on Sept.19 at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs will then begin Southern Conference play at home when they host Western Carolina on Friday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. and Appalachian State on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. Then the Dogs head out on a Southern Conference road trip to face UNC Greensboro on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Elon to play the Phoenix on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. The Dogs are back at home to face Georgia Southern on Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. before playing their next three SoCon matches on the road at Davidson on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., Chattanooga on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. and Samford on Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. The last home stand for The Citadel will be Oct. 24-26 when they host Wofford and Furman. The Bulldogs will meet the Terriers on the 24th at 3 p.m. and the Paladins on the 26th at 1 p.m. The Citadel wraps up their regular season with the College of Charleston on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. and the First Round of the SoCon Tournament will be held on Nov. 2.

WOMEN’S SOCCER 2008-09
2007 IN REVIEW
The 2007 BULLDOGS SHOW GREAT POTENTIAL FOR THE FUTURE The 2007 team finished the season, under the leadership of second-year head coach Bob Winch, with a 3-16-0 record, their best record since going 5-11-2 in 2002. The Bulldogs’ three wins on the season came at Jacksonville State, playing host to USC Upstate, and at South Carolina State. The Dogs just missed getting their first Southern Conference win as they lost, 2-1, in two overtimes at Chattanooga. Women’s soccer is continuing to make huge strides each year since the inaugural 2001 season.
quietly as they were able to tie the game at two nearing the end of regulation. However, Scott scored the winning goal for the Dogs in the 79th minute, her second of the season. Five days later, The Citadel collected their third win in a tough match at South Carolina State, 2-1. Scott scored both goals in the match putting her season total at four goals scored. The win over S.C. State preserved a seven game win streak that the Bulldogs began at the start of the program.
The Citadel opened up thier season a little rocky losing their first three matches. One of those matches included longtime rival VMI. The Keydets were able to score a goal right before the half, and the Bulldogs were stifled in the second half as VMI won 1-0.
The Bulldogs almost recorded their first Southern Conference win at Western Carolina as a goal by Emily Haller tied the match at 1-1 in the middle of the secondhalf. Unfortunately, the Catamounts were able to slip away with a late goal to win the match, 2-1.
The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season in the Jacksonville State Invitational after defeating host Jacksonville State, 1-0. The lone goal was scored by freshman Jessa Scott, which was her first collegiate career goal.
The Citadel looked good against crosstown rival Charleston Southern as a goal by Scott again tied the match at 1-1 in the middle of the second-half for her fifth goal of the year. The Bucs put the pressure on late in the game and scored two goals to shut the door on the Bulldogs, 3-1.
The Dogs’ next win came in a very close home match against USC Upstate, 3-2. The Spartans struck first, but The Citadel would answer with a goal by Emily Haller, her first of the season, to tie the match. Dianna Martin put the Bulldogs ahead in the second-half with her first goal of the season, but USC Upstate would not go
Martin was able to collect her second goal of the season late in the game against the College of Charleston. Unfortunately, the Cougars scored two goals in the first half and two in the second to get the 4-1 win over the Bulldogs.
Britni Bunnell holds the record for most saves in a career at The Citadel.
The Bulldogs again fell short of their first SoCon win in a double-overtime decision at Chattanooga, 2-1. The Mocs and Dogs both scored early in the match putting the score at 1-1, and it would stay that way until Chattanooga scored the decisive goal in the second overtime period. Scott scored the tying goal for the Bulldogs finishing the season with six total goals. “I was very pleased with the team’s progress this year in regard to playing better soccer,” said Coach Winch. “We need to work on being able to maintain possession of the ball more effectively and while we are under pressure. We lacked team depth this year as compared to our opponents, but the girls that competed did so with great effort, sometimes against 2-3 different opponents throughout the course of the game.” The Bulldogs graduated three seniors in Britni Bunnell, Ana Miranda and Aly Woodhead. Bunnell holds the career record for saves at The Citadel with 358 and has the second most saves in a season with 114 in 2005. The Citadel returns 11 starters, including freshman Jessa Scott who led the team in scoring with six goals, and junior goalkeeper Emily Green who has already recorded 108 saves. The Dogs will have four seniors to lead the squad in 2008 and Winch is hopeful about the fresh talent.

THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fiftholdest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money. Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included including Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932. The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee.
ence which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.
Championship History
The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a coeducational military college with a rich and storied history. Corps of Cadets ...

On most days, cadets have physical fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period. Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation. Academic Programs... Honor
“A Cadet does not Lie, Cheat, or Steal, nor Tolerate those who do.” The Honor Code is fairly simple. This code, while simple, offers the key to living and maintaining an honorable life. Cadets are trained that there is never a situation in which they should participate in, or tolerate, dishonorable activities. These core values of honor and integrity are exactly the values which allow Citadel cadets and alumni to improve their organizations and their communities. Honor is the most cherished principle at The Citadel. In today’s post-corporate-scandal society, honor, integrity and ethics are in high demand. The Citadel strives to achieve excellence in the education of principled leaders, also known as the “whole person” concept. The Honor Code encompasses all aspects of cadet life, from academic integrity to personal integrity. It has evolved from an unwritten tradition known as the “code of the gentleman” to a formalized code in September of 1955, when the Corps of Cadets unanimously voted to establish The Honor Code. The development of a cadet into a principled leader is a four-tiered process that includes knowing, adhering, believing, and leading. Its culmination is seen in the cadets who internalize the Code and the alumni who continually apply it throughout their lives.

Cadet Prayer Almighty God, the source of light and strength, we implore Thy blessing on this our beloved institution, that it may continue true to its high purposes. Guide and strengthen those upon whom rests the authority of government; enlighten with wisdom those who teach and those who learn; and grant to all of us that through sound learning and firm leadership, we may prove ourselves worthy citizens of our country, devoted to truth, given to unselfish service, loyal to every obligation of life and above all to Thee. Preserve us faithful to the ideals of The Citadel, sincere in fellowship, unswerving in duty, finding joy in purity and confidence through a steadfast faith. Grant to each one of us, in his/her own life, a humble heart, a steadfast purpose, and a joyful hope, with a readiness to endure hardship and suffer if need be, that truth may prevail among us and that Thy will may be done on earth. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
