Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions.

The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money.

Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929.

By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern

Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included including Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large.

The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932.

The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953.

The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.

Championship History The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport.

The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball.

Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994.

The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success.

The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

The Citadel Bulldogs

President Lt Gen John W. Rosa, Jr. Fourth Year The Citadel (1973) Lt Gen John W. Rosa became the 19th president of The Citadel on January 3, 2006. His presidency has been marked by a keen focus on strategic initiatives that will enhance The Citadel’s mission of developing principled leaders.

His concern for keeping a Citadel education relevant in the 21st century while holding to the values that make the college unique has strengthed the college in significant ways. Since Rosa became president, The Citadel has increased the size of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and completed a $100 million capital campaign -- two benchmarks of a vibrant institution.

Rosa was born in Springfield, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel Rosa was starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force.

A command fighter pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange officer flying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in South Korea, Idaho, South Carolina, New Mexico and Georgia. He served as inspector general for Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama.

As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. He remained in that position until his retirement from active duty in November 2005.

Rosa then returned to Charleston to become president of his alma mater.

Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. And he has studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Charleston in May of 2007.

Since returning to Charleston, he has become active in college and community affairs. Rosa is a member of the board of directors of The Citadel Foundation, The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and The Lowcountry Graduate Center. He is an ex officio member of The Citadel School of Business Advisory Board.

He is on the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and, in 2007, served as Educational Division Campaign Director for Trident United Way. He was also a 2007 member of the Burke High School Scholarship Committee.

Both The Society of the Cincinnati and the Washington Light Infantry have made Lt. Gen. Rosa an honorary member. Rosa is also a member of the Rotary Club of Charleston.

His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has flown the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircraft, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130.

He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (’03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

Athletics Director Larry Leckonby Second Year Duke (1979) The Citadel’s President Lt Gen John W. Rosa, Jr. (USAF, ret.) named Larry Leckonby as the 11th athletics director at the South Carolina Military College in a press conference held at the Altman Athletics Center in June 2008. Leckonby officially joined the Bulldog Family in July.

Prior to The Citadel, Leckonby spent six years as a senior associate athletic director at the University of Maryland.

Hired as the athletic department’s Chief Financial Officer in September 2002, he managed the department’s annual $51.2 million operating budget, capital projects and long-range financial forecasting.

In addition, Leckonby was the sport supervisor for women’s basketball, assisted the Athletic Director with men’s basketball and football, and supervised the athletic business office, athletic ticket office and information technology. He was also responsible for coordinating departmental construction projects, which have included a $50.8M expansion of the Football Stadium, as well as expansions to the Gossett Football Team house, new grass and field turf practice fields and the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. He also served on several campus committees including the University Finance Committee and the University Facilities Advisory Committee.

Prior to accepting the position at Maryland, Leckonby served as the senior associate director of athletics at the University of Houston, appointed in January 1998. He was responsible for the daily administration of the department and specific areas of duty involving finance, planning, fund-raising and marketing. He also served as interim athletics director for six months in 2001 and 2002.

Leckonby also worked as the associate AD for business affairs at Boston College for four-and-a-half years (199398), and the assistant AD for finance and operations at Old Dominion University for five years (1988-93). He was the ticket manager and assistant business manager at Boston University from 1982 to 1988, after beginning his athletics business career at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) where he was an administrative assistant to the business manager beginning in 1981.

A former lacrosse player at Duke University, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in management science in 1979. He earned a master’s degree in sport management from Massachusetts in 1983.

Leckonby is an active member of the College Athletic Business Managers Association. While serving on numerous finance and planning committees during his career, he also has helped direct several NCAA and conference championships including NCAA Baseball Super Regional events in 1999, 2000 and 2002.

Leckonby and his wife, Cris, have two daughters, Hunter and Katie, and a son, William.

Head Coach Jody Huddleston 24th Year South Alabama (1977) Entering his 24th year at The Citadel, head cross country and track and field coach Jody Huddleston continues to lead one of the most successful programs at The Citadel and in the Southern Conference. Huddleston’s tenure has witnessed 55 conference champions, over 230 All-Southern Conference honors bestowed, the first woman to compete in athletics at The Citadel, the first woman to win a conference championship at The Citadel and the first woman to compete in an NCAA Championship event in school history. In addition, The Citadel has set six NCAA Regional qualifying marks under Huddleston’s tenure since the implementation of the regional championship system in 2003.

In 2009, Huddleston earned the 2009 SoCon Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year award for the many successes of his athletes during the indoor season and at the SoCon Indoor Championships. Brian Baize clinched the school record in the heptathlon while Kevin Hardy and Megan Jenkins earned SoCon Track and Field Athletes of the Week in the same week for their performances at the Tiger Invitational in Clemson, S.C. Hardy then came back to the SoCon Indoor Championships and won the long jump while Jamel Brown earned All-Conference honors in the 60m hurdles. Brown joined Christian and Christopher Graham and Zach Johnson in earning AllConference honors for the 4x400m relay. Hardy and Christian also made the SoCon’s inaugural All-Freshman team.

During the 2009 outdoor season, Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat broke the school record again in the 100m hurdles while Brown earned an automatic bid to the NCAA East Regional after the second meet of the season. At the SoCon Outdoor Championships, Huddleston led Brown to his second SoCon title in the 110m hurdles and Hardy won his title as a freshman in the long jump. Christopher, Johnson, Baize and Aaron Overton joined Brown in earning All-Conference honors for the 4x400m relay. For the women, Gilchrist-Poteat and Theresa Johansen made the All-Freshman team joining Hardy and Overton for the men.

During the 2008 cross country season, Huddleston led The Citadel to the NCAA Regional Championships for the first time since 2005. The Bulldog men finished 29th with Brendan Kight leading the way with his 164th finish.

The 2008 season witnessed hurdler Jamel Brown winning the first SoCon Championship for any made cadetstudent-athlete at The Citadel since 2004 as Brown brought home the 400m hurdles title from the SoCon Outdoor Championships. That victory was one of Brown’s four All-Conference accolades in 2008. Huddleston also guided senior Tasha Sanders to three All-Conference honors and a pair of runner-up finishes at the SoCon Championships in the pentathlon and heptathlon.

The 2007 season witnessed Huddleston leading four Southern Conference Championships home to Charleston while the women’s team recorded their best finish in school history. Senior Stephanie McNeill brought home three individual titles (20lb. weight throw, hammer, shot put) while junior Tasha Sanders won her first SoCon crown (heptathlon). The Citadel women placed a record fifth at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Boone, N.C., scoring a program-best 56 points. The men’s team showcased a stellar hurdles squad, placing two finalists in the 110m hurdles and three in the 400m hurdles at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. The fourth place finish by the men’s team marks the seventh time in the past eight years the Bulldog men have finished fourth. Huddleston led the Bulldogs through the historic 2006 track and field seasons, which included

Head Coach then-junior Stephanie McNeill entering the history books on several separate occasions and the women’s team doubling their best performance at a conference championship. McNeill set history by becoming the first female from the Military College of South Carolina to qualify for an NCAA Championship event, throwing a qualifying mark of 47’ 9” in the shot put. McNeill won her flight in the shot put at the NCAA Regional Championships with a throw of 46’ 10.25” as she finished 15th overall. The women’s team finished sixth at the SoCon Outdoor Championships with a school record 48 team points.

Huddleston, along with assistant coach Kris Kut, coached McNeill as she won the 2006 Southern Conference discus title with a throw of 141’ 2”, making her the first female Cadet to win a SoCon Championship. Those accomplishments, along with regional and national media exposure, came in a 2006 track and field season that saw 22 school records broken, 19 athletes receiving All-Conference honors, three SoCon Athlete of the Week honors, two conference champions and two conference superlative honors. Moreover, McNeill was named the SoCon’s Outstanding Field Performer and freshman Shaquill Smith was tabbed as Freshman of the Year after he won the high jump, placed fifth in the triple jump as he set a new freshman school record (47’ 4.25”) and placed eighth in the long jump.

Huddleston’s program first broke into the national headlines in the fall of 1997 when Mandy Garcia became the school’s first-ever female cadet-student-athlete and attracted unprecedented national media exposure as she set history. Garcia served as the lone member of the women’s cross country, indoor track and outdoor track “team” that year. Two years later, Peaches Hudson took second in the heptathlon and captured the institution’s first female All-Southern Conference honor.

Huddleston came to The Citadel from Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Okla., where he served as head coach for seven years. In 1984, he earned NAIA District IX Coach of the Year honors. Earlier that year, the Bison finished second at the league championships, the best track performance for the school in 10 years.

An All-America decathlete at Florida Community College, Huddleston set a new national junior college decathlon long jump record in 1975. He transferred to South Alabama and went on to establish two school records. Huddleston graduated from South Alabama in 1977 with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education. He earned a master’s degree in education two years later at the same institution.

Huddleston has three children, Ryan (25) and Callie (18) while he and his wife, Mary Ellen, have one daughter, Mary Kathryn (5).

Assistant Coach Kris Kut 10th Year The Citadel (2000) Kris Kut enters his 10th year as an assistant coach at The Citadel and his third as the recruiting coordinator. Along with Jody Huddleston, Kut has been on staff with the cross country and track and field programs through the past several years and has watched from the sidelines as school records have fallen over and over again.

Kut, who focuses mainly on the field events, has helped coach 16 conference champions during his tenure at The Citadel, including the school’s first female to win a conference championship, Stephanie McNeill. Kut guided McNeill to a total of four SoCon titles as she also became the first female from The Citadel to qualify and compete in an NCAA Championship event. Under his tutelage, The Citadel’s cadet-student-athletes have won 136 All-Conference honors and numerous school records have fallen, including 23 during the 2007 season and 45 over the past two seasons.

In 2007, Kut guided McNeill to three league titles while coaching cadet-student-athletes to 27 AllSouthern Conference honors. The women’s team posted a record fifth-place finish at the SoCon Outdoor Championships, while the men’s team placed fourth for the seventh time in eight years, maintaining their presence in the top-half of the conference.

Kut, a 2000 graduate from The Citadel, was a four-year letterwinner at The Military College of South Carolina as he pursued his bachelor’s degree in political science. He remained at the school as he earned his master’s degree in health, exercise and sport science in 2003.

A three-time Southern Conference Champion as a cadet-student-athlete, Kut also received four All-Conference honors. He remains the school record holder in the javelin and was a junior national qualifier, competing in the 1997 Junior National Track and Field meet in St. Louis, Mo. As a senior, Kut finished seventh in the javelin at the prestigious Penn Relays, as well as first at several other key meets.

Born Jan. 20, 1978, Kut married the former Holly Jones of Mechanicsville, Va., in 2003. They currently reside in Mount Pleasant, S.C., with their four-year old son Andre Jackson and their two-year old son, Preston.

Volunteer Asst. Coaches Catherine Hinesley Third Year Erskine (2006) Catherine Hinesley enters her third year working with The Citadel cross country program, mainly working with the female distance runners. A 2006 graduate of Erskine College, Hinesley ran cross country for the Flying Fleet while serving as the team captain her junior and senior year.

While at Erskine, Hinesley earned Academic All-American honors while being named to the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) Presidential Honor Roll. Hinesley was also a member of the prestigious Omicron Delta Kappa honor society.

A USATF Level I Certified coach, Hinesley is currently working towards a master’s degree in health, exercise and sport science in The Citadel’s Graduate College. Hinesley enjoys competing in triathlons and participating in yoga and hiking in her spare time.

Gary Wilson Fourth Year Oklahoma Baptist (2006) Gary Wilson enters his fourth year working with The Citadel cross country program, following an incredibly successful first year. In his first season, Wilson helped lead the women’s cross country team to their most successful Southern Conference finish ever at eighth while the men placed sixth, their highest finish in 10 years.

Wilson has a long history of success with track and field, qualifying three athletes for the NCAA Championships when he was a volunteer coach for Valdosta State in 1976. As a co-coach at the University of Tennessee, he helped lead the Lady Vols in the program’s first year. Prior to his helping start what has become one of the most competitive and successful women’s programs in the Southeastern Conference, Wilson was the head men’s track and cross country coach at West Georgia College from 1966-1968.

Wilson currently resides in Charleston.

Women’s Outlook With the loss of a trio of standout runners to graduation, The Citadel will be looking to rising seniors Katheryn Gatewood and Natalie Wolin to guide a group of young runners into a competitive Southern Conference schedule.

“We lost three talented runners and top point scorers from our squad due to graduation,” said head coach Jody Huddleston. “Megan Jenkins, Sarah Strickland and Erin Ritter were all talented athletes but both Katheryn Gatewood and Natalie Wolin have led the team at one point or another in their careers. Both have the experience and ability to step up and guide a very young group.”

Gatewood’s talent and abilities were showcased early in her career as she set the school record in cross country with a time of 18:59 in her first collegiate meet freshman year. Gatewood struggled last season after a pair of very successful freshman and sophomore years but the El Paso, Texas native has the opportunity to put that behind her and surprise the rest of the conference this season.

Wessinger, who hails from Chester, S.C., is the more talented long distance runner of the two, posting a 20:55 mark in high school and is the AAA state champion in South Carolina in the 800m. Both Huddleston and assistant coach Kris Kut are expecting amazing things from Wessinger in her four years at The Citadel.

Caitlyn Lees, a rising sophomore that only competed during the track and field seasons last year, will join the team to give the Bulldogs some much-needed depth. Lees, a sprinter and native of Stanhope, N.J., has experience in the longer relays and is used to a more challenging terrain in her home Garden State.

Sophia Bay will add depth to the Bulldog roster with her experience of running cross country at Sussex Technical High School in Seaford, Del. A young team with plenty of raw talent, The Citadel will be looking to a pair of experienced runners to challenge and push a younger group to success in 2009.

Senior Brendan Kight (Delta Company) will again lead the team with a supporting cast that includes Alex Anderson (India Co.), Zach Yereb (Mike Co.), Frankie Dioguardi (Charlie Co.), Chris Fallis (Charlie Co.) and Nathan Jackson (Golf Co.).

“We have a good group of upperclassmen this year but they will need to work hard and push each other to improve as a group,” said head coach Jody Huddleston, who enters his 24th season at the helm of the Bulldog program.

The Bulldogs are relying on the fast times and leadership of Kight, who recently posted an excellent outdoor season and is getting very close to the school record in the steeplechase. Kight ran 9:33.88, less than four seconds from setting the school record, and his improvement in that event should be a precursor to an improved cross country season.

Anderson broke through as the team’s No. 2 runner last season, surprising most as he posted the 10th best 10k time in school history during last year’s outdoor track season. Fallis, Dioguardi and Jackson have all spent the summer training hard and are expected to show a great deal of improvement.

Pushing the returnees in 2009 will be a solid crop of incoming freshman that have the potential to score for the team and make an impact. The incoming freshmen are expected to be led by Atom Young from Martinez, Ga., who ran 16:14 in high school and finished third at the Georgia State High School Championships.

A familiar name to Bulldog cross country is also expected to make an impact early on as John Gatewood follows his sister’s footsteps. Katheryn, his sister and a senior on the women’s team, set the school record in her freshman year in cross country and John is expected to be as competitive as his sister is. John ran a 15:30 three-mile mark in high school and is expected to challenge as one of the team’s top seven runners.

Expected to be one of the better incoming freshmen, Kyle Keene ran a 16:10 mark in high school and as a native of Greenville, S.C., he is accustomed to the regional area that The Citadel competes in. Keene finished third at the South Carolina state meet and was also a regional champion in high school.

With a dedicated group of returnees that has shown consistent progress and a talented crop of incoming freshmen, The Citadel is poised to have a breakout year in 2009.

2008 Review Juniors Lead at Eye Opener Junior Brendan Kight led the Bulldogs overall with a time of 27:11 and finishing 34th as The Citadel cross country teams opened the 2008 cross country season at the Eye Opener Meet in Spartanburg, S.C. Junior Katheryn Gatewood led the women with a time of 20:02, placing 59th.

20:29 in the 6k race as he finished 19th overall. Kight has been the top finisher for the Bulldogs in every meet this season. The women’s team struggled without top runner Katheryn Gatewood, who had led the team in every meet this season. Senior Sarah Strickland led the Bulldogs with a time of 16:02 in the 4k race, placing 14th.

Bulldogs Weather the Heat at Navy’s Salty Seadog Invitational Katheryn Gatewood led the women’s team with a 6k time of 25:35 while Brendan Kight led the men for the second straight week with an 8k time of 27:28 as The Citadel cross country teams competed at the Salty Seadog Invitational hosted by the United States Naval Academy. The women’s team finished 12th while the men’s team placed 14th. Temperatures rose to the low 90s with a high humidity for the meet, something The Citadel and Southern Conference foe Furman took in stride but many of the northern schools struggled with throughout the day.

Conference Meet Does Not Go According to Plan The Citadel’s men’s and women’s cross country teams both recorded a 10th place finish at the 2008 Southern Conference Championships at Milliken Park in Spartanburg, S.C. The men’s team finished 10th out of 11 teams while the women’s team tied for 10th out of 12 teams. The men’s team finished just nine points shy of the College of Charleston in their worst finish since placing 10th at the 1999 SoCon Championships. Junior Brendan Kight led the Bulldogs in the meet, running 27:11 to place 52nd overall. Kight has led the men’s team in every meet of the season. The women’s team tied Georgia Southern for 10th place in the meet. Junior Katheryn Gatewood ran 19:22 and finished 49th overall to lead the team. Gatewood led the women’s team in every meet she competed in for the 2008 season.

Bulldog Women Second, Men Third at the 28th Will Wilson Annual Citadel Invitational The Citadel women’s team recorded the second runnerup finish in four years and the Bulldog men’s team finished third at the 28th Annual Will Wilson Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park on Sept. 27. Katheryn Gatewood led the women with a time of 20:15 for 13th place and Brendan Kight led the men for the third meet this season posting a time of 27:58 for 11th place.

Bulldogs Place 29th at NCAA Southeast Regional Five cadets made their way to the NCAA Regional on Nov. 15, 2008 in Clemmons, N.C. Brendan Kight once again led the way for the Bulldogs with his 164th place finish, posting a time of 35:04. Zach Yereb followed with a time of 35:34 for 177th place. P.J. Wasilchak came in at 198th with a time of 36:57 and Chris Fallis recorded a time of 37:32 for 203rd place. Chris Morgan rounded out the Bulldog team with his 211th place finish, posting a time of 38:46.

The Citadel Invite The 29th Annual Will Wilson Citadel Invitational James Island County Park James Island, S.C. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 One of the premier cross country meets in South Carolina, The Citadel Invitational is annually held on the last weekend in September at James Island County Park and is a showcase of cross country talent from the South.

The first invitational was held at Middleton Plantation in 1981 and was a 5k race for the women and a 10k for the men. The first women’s team champion in Division I was Davidson College (there were no Division II women’s team entered the first four years). The Division I men’s champion was Baptist College (now Charleston Southern University) and for Division II was USC Spartanburg (now USC Upstate).

In 1982 the race was moved to Charles Towne Landing and was run in the birth place of Charleston for the next 19 years until it moved to James Island County Park in 2001. The 1989 race was moved to the campus of Francis Marion College in Florence as the course at Charles Towne Landing was totally destroyed by Hurricane Hugo just two weeks prior to the race.

The women’s Division I meet and course record at Charles Towne Landing is held by Gail Pennachio of Furman University with a time of 17:21. The Division II record is held by Sylvia Sanchez of Florida Community College with a time of 18:31. On the men’s side, the Division I 10k record is 30:48 held

by Al Dunn from Baptist College and by Mitch Powell from Francis Marion College for Division II in a time of 31:31.

The men’s race distance was shortened to 8k in 1985. Seamus Powers from East Tennessee State University holds the Division I course and meet record of 23:51, established in 1993. The men’s Division II course and meet record is held by Jay Jones of Pembroke State (now UNC-Pembroke) with a time of 24:45.

High schools were invited to participate in 1995 with Heathwood Hall winning the girls division and Sumter high school winning the boys. Joyce Peebles of Pendleton won the inaugural girls race in a time of 20:45 while Mike Wilson from North Myrtle Beach won the boys race in 17:03. The course record for the high school girl’s race at Charles Towne Landing was set in 2000 as Jocelyn Veit of Lexington High School ran 19:17. The boys course and meet record was set by David Patterson of Cardinal Gibbon’s High School in 1996 with a time of 15:55.

The inaugural races at James Island County Park were run on the “Lake Course” and moved to the “Meadow Course” the following year.

The Citadel is a national leader in the percentage of female students who are athletes. More than 50 percent of its female cadets compete on seven varsity teams, an outstanding achievement given the fact that female athletics started in 1997.

The Honor Code is fairly simple. This code, while simple, offers the key to living and maintaining an honorable life. Cadets are trained that there is never a situation in which they should participate in, or tolerate, dishonorable activities. These core values of honor and integrity are exactly the values which allow Citadel cadets and alumni to improve their organizations and their communities.

Honor is the most cherished principle at The Citadel. In today’s post-corporate-scandal society, honor, integrity and ethics are in high demand. The Citadel strives to achieve excellence in the education of principled leaders, also known as the “whole person” concept. The Honor Code encompasses all aspects of cadet life, from academic integrity to personal integrity. It has evolved from an unwritten tradition known as the “code of the gentleman” to a formalized code in September of 1955, when the Corps of Cadets unanimously voted to establish The Honor Code. The development of a cadet into a principled leader is a four-tiered process that includes knowing, adhering, believing, and leading. Its culmination is seen in the cadets who internalize the Code and the alumni who continually apply it throughout their lives.
