2009 Outlook BULLDOGS POSE A THREAT IN 2009 The Citadel proved in the 2008 season that they are serious about creating a winning tradition. After earning their first conference victory in program history against Georgia Southern, the Bulldogs are hoping to bring this momentum into the 2009 season. With the return of 13 starters, The Citadel has the experience and determination to tally more wins in 2009. Fourth-year head coach Bob Winch is eager to see the improvement of this year’s team. Goalkeepers The Bulldog goalkeepers are relatively young with sophomores Whitney Nave and Laura Serafino. Gaining valuable experience last season, the two totaled 126 saves and finished in the top 10 in the Southern Conference. Defenders The Citadel graduated Laura Curran and Danielle DiFiore but is returning experienced young talent with senior Kristine Devine leading the way. The Bulldog defense will be one of the main focuses this season as they try to improve the 3.57 goals against average conceded last fall. The back four defenders will have to anchor a team that is committed to defending. Sophomores Hannah Warne, Leah Hawkins, Nikkita Persaud, Shanna Couch and Miranda Johnson all will compete to create the most athletic back four that is able to stop opposing teams as well as initiate opponent attacks from the back. Midfielders The midfielders were probably the most consistent area of the team in 2008. Senior Dianna Martin and junior Nicole Martinoli saw the most time in the middle of the field with Martin recording two assists and eight shots and Martinoli adding two assists and 19 shots. Junior Dominic Snyder, along with Couch and freshman Angela Foyt, look to round out a midfield that will keep possession of the ball, defend and take on the majority of the running for the team. The Bulldogs were fortunate to only lose Emily Haller in this position. Forwards Winch and the coaching staff are hoping to establish at least two dependable forwards to score goals for the Bulldogs, especially with the loss of ViVi Brown. Last year, The Citadel created many goal scoring opportunities but could not connect to the net. Sophomore Amy Loughran and redshirt senior Nikki Mares both scored goals in the 2008 season and will look to add to these totals for 2009. Loughran and Mares tied for first on the team with five goals. “With most of the team returning and our sophomores gained quality time as freshmen, I am looking towards a much improved 2009 season. Many of the unknowns will be known and the team should have a higher level of comfort to compete every time they step foot on the field,” said Winch. “We had a fantastic spring season in terms of being able to keep the ball longer in possession as a team. Hopefully before the first match, we can answer these two questions: Who will be a dominant goal keeper and who are the consistent goal scorers?”

2008 Review Bulldogs Finish Making History The 2008 soccer team finished the season with a 3-14-1, 1-10 SoCon record. Despite the 5-11-2 record in 2002, the Bulldogs made history by earning their first Southern Conference victory over Georgia Southern, 2-1, on Oct. 10, 2008. The Bulldogs have had many close calls but this was the first time since the creation of the program in 2001 that The Citadel has picked up a SoCon win. The Bulldogs opened regular season play with two shutout losses against Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern. The Runnin’ Bulldogs made their way to WLI Field to claim a 2-0 win against The Citadel. The Bulldogs then traveled across town to take on the Buccaneers and suffered a 4-0 loss. The Citadel turned up the heat as they made their way to Huntington, W.Va., to compete in the Thundering Herd Nike Invitational. The Bulldogs picked up their first 2OT tie in program history against Marshall. The Thundering Herd was the first to score and scored first in the second half. Amy Loughran, assisted by Dianna Martin, and Nikkita Persaud, assisted by Jessa Scott, scored for the Bulldogs in the second half bringing a 2-2 draw. The teams battled into double overtime but ended in a 2-2 decision. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Serafino created a career-high of 16 saves. The Citadel then took on first time opponent Mount St. Mary. The Bulldogs earned their first win of the 2008 season beating The Mount, 4-1. Junior transfer Nikki Mares was responsible for two of those goals while Jessica Stewart and Scott scored two more points for the Bulldogs. The Citadel returned home to host Coastal Carolina and South Carolina State. Loughran scored the lone goal for The Citadel but fell, 1-4, to the Chanticleers. The Bulldogs had a big game against long-time opponent S.C. State. Loughran, assisted by Dianna Martin and Scott, were the first to score for the Bulldogs 23 minutes into the game. About 12 minutes later, Mares, assisted by Nicole Martinoli, added another Bulldog point leading into halftime, 3-0. The Citadel returned to the field for two more goals by Loughran and Mares but S.C. State managed to slip two goals in and the Bulldogs earned their second win of the season. The Citadel made their way to Spartanburg, S.C. to battle with the USC Upstate Spartans for the last non-conference match. The Bulldogs and the Spartans went into double overtime after Mares, assisted by Loughran, scored to tie, 1-1. USC Upstate pulled out the game-winning goal ending the game in a 2-1 Bulldog loss. Southern Conference action began with hosting The Citadel hosting Western Carolina on Sept. 26. The Bulldogs suffered a 6-0 loss to the Catamounts with Stewart as the key player for the Bulldogs finishing with three shots, two on goal. Appalachian State came to visit and The Citadel put up a good fight. The Mountaineers had the first two goals but Persaud put the Bulldogs back into the game as she shot for a goal with 7:43 on the clock in the first half. The Citadel hoped to return for the win but Appalachian State sealed the deal to gain a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs. The Citadel would face two more shutout losses at UNC Greensboro, 5-0 and at Elon, 2-0.
Bulldogs
The Bulldogs returned home to host the Georgia Southern Eagles on Oct. 10. The rain almost postponed the match but cleared away just in time for The Citadel to earn their first SoCon win. The Citadel outshot the Eagles, 6-3, in the first half but Georgia Southern was the only one able to connect with the net going into halftime, 1-0. The Bulldogs came back strong when Loughran assisted a goal to Scott with 44:15 on the clock. The Eagles continued to hold the Bulldogs for 14 minutes but Devine assisted another Bulldog goal to Loughran. Both teams’ defenses were too strong to allow another goal. The Citadel earned a 2-1 victory. The Bulldogs outshot the Eagles, 11-10 and goalie Whitney Nave finished with six saves. The team would then go on a three-game road trip. First, the Davidson Wildcats dominated the Bulldogs, 7-0. Then, The Citadel traveled to Chattanooga, Tenn., and lost, 2-0, to Chattanooga. They ended their long trip in Birmingham, Ala., to take on the Samford Bulldogs. This was Samford’s first year in the SoCon and The Citadel Bulldogs were looking forward to creating a winning series. The Citadel fell, 4-0, but Scott finished with a career per game record of five shots. The Bulldogs ended their scoreless drought as they hosted the Wofford Terriers. The game was scheduled for Oct. 24 but was postponed to Oct. 25 due to inclement weather. The Terriers were first to put a point on the board and Persaud responded with a goal assisted by Martinoli. Wofford scored again leading into halftime, 2-1. The Terriers came back with a goal at 6:33 on the clock in the for the 3-1 win. The Citadel ended their 2008 campaign with two losses to Furman, 5-0 and arch rival College of Charleston, 9-0. In the match against the Paladins, both teams went into halftime, 0-0. This was the first time in the season that the Bulldogs and their opponent went into halftime scoreless. “We have closed the gap on a few teams in the SoCon, but we are still far away from others,” said Head Coach Bob Winch. “We need to recruit or create players that are comfortable scoring goals at this level. We created some chances this year to score very easy goals, but did not finish. Finishing those goals could have been the difference in two or three more wins.” The Bulldogs graduated four seniors, ViVi Brown, Laura Curran, Danielle DiFiore and Emily Haller. Brown finished with 56 games played and eight shots. Curran totaled 54 games played and six shots while DiFiore totaled 20 games played and one shot. Haller left The Citadel with 64 games played, two goals, two assists, six points and 30 shots. The Citadel returns three seniors, three juniors and nine sophomores, including leading scorers senior Nikki Mares and sophomore Amy Loughran and two talented goalies.

The Military of South Carolina This is College The Citadel The Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college with the mission of educating principled leaders through its Corps of Cadets. Males and females are admitted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through The Citadel Graduate College (CGC) in the evening. The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied history. Located in Charleston, S.C., the institution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experience that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. Graduates of The Citadel say that the disciplined lifestyle and friendships they forged here have a profoundly positive effect on their lives.
T
With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s largest military college program outside the service academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the graduating seniors earn military commissions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market.
H I S
The Citadel Graduate College, which is noted for The Citadel excellence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,700 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Academic programs at the college are complimented by a strong commitment to service and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction.

With more than 80 percent of its students returning each year, The Citadel enjoys one of the best retention records in the country. The Citadel’s 14 academic departments offer five bachelor’s degrees in 17 areas, six master’s degrees in 17 areas and specialist degrees in two areas.

Corps of Cadets ... All undergraduate students at The Citadel are members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and represent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period. Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation. The Citadel ranks No. 3 nationally among public colleges and universities in the Carnegie classification in the percentage of students who graduate in four years. That category includes colleges with master’s level programs.
The Princeton Review for 2008 named The Citadel School of Business one of the nation’s 237 best business programs. Among South Carolina’s public colleges and universities, The Citadel has the highest four-year graduation rate for athletes. More than 90 percent of cadet-student-athletes who have exhausted their four years of eligibility earn a diploma. The Princeton Review for 2008 placed The Citadel in its top tier of academic institutions according to an academic ranking that measures how hard students work and how much they get back for their efforts. The ranking considered such factors as hours students study outside of class, quality of the student body, class size, student assessment of professors and other resources.

Honor
“A Cadet does not Lie, Cheat, or Steal, nor Tolerate those who do.” The Honor Code is fairly simple. This code, while simple, offers the key to living and maintaining an honorable life. Cadets are trained that there is never a situation in which they should participate in, or tolerate, dishonorable activities. These core values of honor and integrity are exactly the values which allow Citadel cadets and alumni to improve their organizations and their communities.
H O N
Honor is the most cherished principle at The Citadel. In today’s post-corporatescandal society, honor, integrity and ethics are in high demand. The Citadel strives to achieve excellence in the education of principled leaders, also known as the “whole person” concept. The Honor Code encompasses all aspects of cadet life, from academic integrity to personal integrity. It has evolved from an unwritten tradition known as the “code of the gentleman” to a formalized code in September of 1955, when the Corps of Cadets unanimously voted to establish The Honor Code. The development of a cadet into a principled leader is a four-tiered process that includes knowing, adhering, believing, and leading. Its culmination is seen in the cadets who internalize the Code and the alumni who continually apply it throughout their lives.
O R
Cadet Prayer Pray yerr Almighty God, the source of light and strength, we implore Thy blessing on this our beloved institution, that it may continue true to its high purposes. Guide and strengthen those upon whom rests the authority of government; enlighten with wisdom those who teach and those who learn; and grant to all of us that through sound learning and firm leadership, we may prove ourselves worthy citizens of our country, devoted to truth, given to unselfish service, loyal to every obligation of life and above all to Thee. Preserve us faithful to the ideals of The Citadel, sincere in fellowship, unswerving in duty, finding joy in purity and confidence through a steadfast faith. Grant to each one of us, in his/her own life, a humble heart, a steadfast purpose, and a joyful hope, with a readiness to endure hardship and suffer if need be, that truth may prevail among us and that Thy will may be done on earth. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Fiercely Loyal Bulldog Mascots Bulldogs: ... noted for their vigor and composed disposition... they are fiercely loyal and their grip is very powerful against resistance.
The Citadel has two live bulldog mascots, Boo IX and General, whose main duty is to provide morale for the Corps of Cadets, faculty and staff and all of the Bulldog athletic teams. Other duties include barking at opposing teams, eating numerous dog biscuits throughout the day and being pampered by the cadets that help take care of them while school is in session.

General General, who was born June 18, 2003, became the first live mascot to live on The Citadel campus since the 1950s. The mascot program was created by the Class of 2003, which wanted to leave a gift to the college. The class raised $1,000 toward the program’s startup. General was donated in August 2003 by the late Hazel Groshon of James Island, S.C. General comes from a long line of bulldog royalty. He is the nephew of Uga V, the former mascot for the University of Georgia. General’s other relatives include the bulldog representatives for the United States Marine Corps and Mississippi State University. General was named by the Corps of Cadets following a contest to find the best name. Boo IX Boo IX was born on Sept. 30, 2003, and was donated by Fred Ducker, class of ‘63. He joins General as a member of the two-dog mascot team that attends special events, football games, parades and anything involving the Corps of Cadets. Boo IX is named after Lt. Col. Thomas Nugent Courvoisie, a former assistant commandant, and comes from a long line of Bulldogs that have been serving The Citadel for more than 15 years.
