Outlook Depth to Be A Plus for Bulldogs This Fall For the first time in Carolyn Geiger’s tenure as The Citadel’s volleyball coach, the Bulldogs will have depth on the roster as seven new faces compliment the seven returnees. With 14 players, this is Geiger’s biggest roster and all will play a part in order to improve on last year’s record.

Blocking is an area where the Cadets seek to improve as they were last in the conference in that area in 2008, and developing a more effective front row is another area in which Geiger wants to advance. “We will be working on our blocking quickness along the net. I am excited we will be taller along the front row but we still need to develop the quickness along with technique to put up an effective block.”

The Citadel has shown in the past they are consistently competitive in games. Geiger’s top priority this year is winning those close matches. Eighteen sets last year were determined by two points, “we want to turn those close ones into close wins this year.” Coming off a solid spring season, the team’s strength and conditioning program helped the group’s overall quickness and speed. “I thought we had a great showing at the spring beach volleyball tournament held at the Windjammer. This was the first year The Citadel competed in a sand volleyball tournament. I think it’s a great addition to our spring season.” Options are a luxury Geiger will be able to play with this season. There will be competition at every position as many of the incoming freshmen have played in multiple spots in high school. It will be vital to the team to have all hitters connect effectively with the setters. It is increasingly important that the middle hitters have a good connection with the setters because they run a faster tempo set. Middle Blockers Juniors Amanda Beal, Jessica Maas and Shannon Frain bring experience to the middle blocker position. Jessica Maas, who earned the most points for the team in 2008, leads the way. Shannon Frain is coming off a great spring season where she worked hard and is considered a great compliment on both the middle and right sides. Amanda Beal will be counted on to step up and contribute more this season as well. Kaona Mercer, at six-foot one, is one of the tall incoming freshmen who will be utilized in the middle or the right side along the net. Jessica Maxwell will also be another vital freshman to provide depth and versatility.

Outlook Outside Hitters Tatum Jestila is coming off a great sophomore year and has emerged as one of the team’s top performers both on and off the court. Blaine McAllister is one of the team’s hardest workers and a motivator for others as she reportedly made great gains over the spring. Both are expected to step up and perform at a higher and more consistent level. Competing for court time will be newcomers Emily Dalton, Rachael Farrell and Cassie Uribe. Freshman Cassie Uribe had a strong presence in the front row in high school as she ranked ninth in Arizona for her kills/set and earned Player of the Year recognition for her region. Communication and ball control will be key factors for this group. Ball control will be critical to the Bulldog’s team success this season.

Defensive Specialists Kathryn Johnston is expected to be a contributor this season for the libero position after one year of experience under her belt. Summerville graduate, Meredith Mutispaugh is Geiger’s first local player and her experience and abilities gained in high school and club ball make her an attractive prospect to fill the libero role. Here is what Head Coach Carolyn Geiger says about this year’s squad: “Amanda Beal is loud and vocal, which is what we need from her. She needs to score more points for us, and be a more dominant hitter.” “She is a smart player and knows where to put the ball to score points. We will be working with Jessica Maas on her quickness and blocking presence on the front row.” “Shannon Frain’s versatility will be important this year. We will need her to play on either the right side or the middle. She has experience in both these positions.” “Kaona Mercer has the physical gift of height. I am eager to see her progress and growth her freshmen year.” “Jessica Maxwell possesses an enviable spunkiness and comes from a solid high school and club team that will help her transition to the college game.” “Tatum Jestila is a workhorse and I expect her to be a solid contributor.” “She is a great leader and Blaine McAllister represents our program and our school in an utmost fashion.” “Emily Dalton played for a solid club program, Club Fusion, out of Chicago, Ill. Chicago has a strong volleyball presence and we will continue to recruit from this area.” “Rachael Farrell has great hands that will be an asset to us on the right side. We could use her on both the outside and right side.” “I am eager to see how vocal Cassie Uribe becomes on the court with our team. She is naturally quiet, but is a solid all-around player.”

Setters There is youth in the setter’s position. Both Alexa Dahlstrom and Alyssa Holum will be relied on heavily to lead the offensive attack and replace the gap left by senior Emily Hill. Although a sophomore, Holum’s leadership will be utilized immensely. Dahlstrom, a six-foot one, left-handed freshman setter will provide added depth at the position.

Lt Gen John W. Rosa President Fourth Year

The Citadel President Lt Gen John W. Rosa was born in Springfield, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel, Rosa was the starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force. A command fighter pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange officer flying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in South Korea, Idaho, South Carolina, New Mexico and Georgia. He served as inspector general for Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. Rosa holds a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He has also studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has flown the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircraft, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130. On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th president. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

Athletics Director Larry Leckonby

Larry Leckonby Athletics Director Second Year Duke, 1979

Prior to The Citadel, Leckonby spent six years as a senior associate athletic director at the University of Maryland. Hired as the athletic department’s Chief Financial Officer in September 2002, he managed the department’s annual $51.2 million operating budget, capital projects and long-range financial forecasting. In addition, Leckonby was the sport supervisor for women’s basketball, assisted the Athletic Director with men’s basketball and football, and supervised the athletic business office, athletic ticket office and information technology. He was also responsible for coordinating departmental construction projects, which have included expansions to the Gossett Football Team House, new grass and field turf practice fields and the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. He also served on several campus committees including the University Finance Committee and the University Facilities Advisory Committee. Prior to accepting the position at Maryland, Leckonby served as the senior associate director of athletics at the University of Houston, appointed in January 1998. He was responsible for the daily administration of the department and specific areas of duty involving finance, planning, fund-raising and marketing. He also served as interim athletics director for six months in 2001 and 2002. Leckonby also worked as the associate AD for business affairs at Boston College for four-and-a-half years (1993-98), and the assistant AD for finance and operations at Old Dominion University for five years (198893). He was the ticket manager and assistant business manager at Boston University from 1982 to 1988, after beginning his athletics business career at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) where he was an administrative assistant to the business manager beginning in 1981. A former lacrosse player at Duke University, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in management science in 1979. He earned a master’s degree in sport management from Massachusetts in 1983. Leckonby is an active member of the College Athletic Business Managers Association. While serving on numerous finance and planning committees during his career, he also has helped direct several NCAA and conference championships including NCAA Baseball Super Regional events in 1999, 2000 and 2002. Leckonby and his wife, Cris, have two daughters, Hunter and Katie, and a son, Liam.

The Citadel’s President Lt Gen John W. Rosa, Jr. named Larry Leckonby as the 11th athletics director at the South Carolina Military College in a press conference held at the Altman Athletics Center in June 2008. Leckonby officially joined the Bulldog Family in July.

Kelly Simpson

Associate AD/ Senior Woman Administrator Sixth Year

The Citadel Bulldogs

Clemson, 1999 Kelly Simpson enters her sixth year as the Senior Woman Administrator and her eighth on The Citadel campus. As the SWA, she oversees seven women’s sports programs in the areas of game management, academic advising and compliance. Simpson is an active member of the SoCon Cross Country and Track and Field Committee and the SoCon Graduate Scholarship Committee and also serves on various campus committees. Prior to coming to the athletic department, Simpson spent one year as an admissions counselor in The Citadel’s office of admissions. Before that, she spent a year and a half in the Department of Health Exercise and Sport Science where she served as Director of Intramurals and a facility manager for Deas Hall. The past five years, Simpson has also served as an Adjuct Professor in the HESS Department. A native of Weaverville, N.C., Simpson attended Clemson University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management in 1999. She earned an M.S. in the same discipline from Clemson in 2001. While at Clemson, Simpson ran on the cross country and track teams and was a member of the Tigers’ 1999 ACC Championship Outdoor Track team. Simpson is married to The Citadel’s head men’s tennis coach, Toby Simpson, and they have a one-year old son, Lasher.

Carolyn Geiger Head Coach Fourth Year

The 2008 season brought the Bulldogs their first ever victory over Southern Conference rival Appalachian State. The Bulldogs dispatched the Mountaineers on the road in Boone, N.C., 3-1, to earn their first conference victory of the season. They closed out the season on a high note downing Western Carolina at McAlister Field House, 3-1, to send three seniors out with a victory. In 2007, Geiger coached senior Emily Hill to a national ranking in service aces. Hill recorded 0.60 service aces per game, which ranked her 16th nationally and first in the SoCon. With her national ranking, Hill earned the highest national ranking ever reached by any female cadet-student-athlete. The Bulldogs had a record-setting season in Geiger’s first year as the head coach. The Geiger-led Bulldogs had one of their most successful seasons in 2006 despite fielding one of the smallest active rosters in Division I. The third coach in the program’s history, Geiger took over the reigns of the oldest women’s team sport at one of the most storied institutions in the country in July 2006. No stranger to the volleyball program at The Military College of South Carolina, Geiger served as the program’s official scorer for the three years prior to being hired as head coach. In her first year, Geiger engineered a season that witnessed an all-time level of excitement surrounding the program as the Bulldogs became a force to be reckoned with in the Southern Conference. Posting a 10-24 record in her first year, Geiger led the Cadets to their first league win in more than two seasons and coached the team to their first ever win in Spartanburg against Wofford. Prior to first entering the gates of The Citadel, Geiger served as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston, helping to build that program into a dominating powerhouse in the Southern Conference.

Carolyn Geiger enters her fourth season as head coach of The Citadel Volleyball program after signing her biggest recruiting class yet. She had three players commit during the early signing period for the first time and also became the winningest coach in program history against conference opponents last season. The Bulldogs took steps toward improving in 2008 and look to continue their momentum in 2009 with a challenging schedule and a deep roster.

In 2002, the Geiger-taught Cougars were champions of both the Southern Conference regular season and post-season tournament and earned the school’s first bid to the NCAA Tournament in any women’s sport. The Cougars posted the nation’s third-longest winning streak that season with 22 consecutive victories that shattered the previous school and SoCon records. The 2002 CofC squad also saw five members named All-Conference and three were named All-Tournament in the Southern Conference Tournament, including the tournament’s most valuable player.

Head Coach Carolyn Geiger Geiger also was a vital part of the 2001 College of Charleston team that won the first SoCon regular season championship in the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history and posted a then-record 20-match winning streak. The Cougars finished 2001 with a dominating 30-3 record, going 19-1 in SoCon play. Geiger helped coach that squad to a No. 6 national ranking in winning percentage that season (.909), as well as a No. 6 national ranking in digs per game (18.52) and No. 13 national ranking in hitting percentage (.287).

That 2001 Cougar squad recorded a team grade point average of 3.31, which resulted in their second AVCA/Molten Team Academic Award. Geiger first came on the CofC scene as an assistant coach for the 1999 season, when the Cougars led theSouthernConferenceinhittingpercentage(.209),killspergame(16.11)andassistspergame(13.72). That team finished the year ranked fifth nationally in digs per game (20.18) and had 10 athletes earn Academic Honor Roll distinction, with an overall team grade point average of 3.48 for the year. Geiger joined the Cougar coaching staff after spending four years as a standout Division I volleyball player at UNC Asheville. A three-time member of the All-Big South ConferenceTeam, Geiger still holds the school record for career service aces (198) and is second in the all-time charts in kills (1,761) and block assists (421). Geiger broke into the record books early on, recording a school record 32 kills in a match her sophomore year against Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC). She still holds the single match school record for best attack percentage, swinging a powerful .520 (14 kills, 1 error, 25 total attempts) against Charleston Southern also during her sophomore year. Geiger was named Most Outstanding Player in 1999 at UNCA and the Pennsylvania-native was also named Most Valuable Player of the 1998 College of Charleston Invitational. She earned her bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of science degree in environmental science from UNC Asheville in 1999. Geiger also served as assistant coach of the Biltmore Volleyball Club in 1995 and assisted with practices for the Biltmore Blaze Jr. Volleyball Club in 1999. Geiger is orginially from Lancaster, Pa., where she was an All-State volleyball honoree at Hempfield High School.

Assistant Coach Amir Khaledi

Amir Khaledi Assistant Coach Fourth Year

Prior to joining the staff in 2006, he spent two separate coaching stints at Charleston Southern University. Khaledi was named the head coach of Charleston Southern in 1986 and served in that capacity for nine years before handing the reigns over to his former player Danyel Bellush. During his tenure as head coach, Khaledi directed Charleston Southern during the most successful run in the program’s history. Khaledi is the most successful coach in Charleston Southern volleyball history and has more than 200 victories to his credit. Khaledi led the Buccaneers to four Big South Championships during his tenure. A four-time Big South Coach of the Year honoree, Khaledi was inducted into the Charleston Southern Hall of Fame in 2002. Khaledi is also a standout coach on the club level as well, having been involved with Charleston’s Junior Olympic volleyball program since 1997. He coached the Charleston elite team to four national championship tournament appearances and led the team to a seventh-place finish at the AAU national tournament in 2001, the highest ranking ever achieved by a South Carolina team to date. All four national tournament teams claimed regional crowns. In 2006 and 2007, Khaledi’s 18 Elite Club team finished fourth at the U.S. Volleyball National Qualifying tournament in Atlanta, Ga. In 2007 and 2008, his 18 elite Club team won the Regional Title and attended the Junior National Championships. Not just a success story on the sidelines, Khaledi was a three-year all-star collegiate player at Norwich (Vt.) University, garnering two All-Conference and All-Region honors, before transferring to Charleston Southern. Khaledi earned his bachelor’s degree from Charleston Southern in 1984. Prior to coming to the United States and attending college, Khaledi played volleyball in his native Tehran, Iran, where he was a four-year letterwinner at Tehran’s Kharazmi High School, earning multiple All-City, All-Region and All-Country honors. From 1977-79, Khaledi was a member of Iran’s Junior Olympic National Team.

Amir Khaledi enters his fourth year with The Citadel Volleyball program. Since joining the Bulldog staff, Khaledi has developed The Citadel into one of the scrappiest defensive teams in the Southern Conference. In 2006, the Bulldogs set 14 school records, despite fielding one of the smallest active rosters in Division I.

A nationally-acclaimed coach, Khaledi has received Cap I and Impact Coaching certification under USA Volleyball and his Coaching and Officiating certification by the International Federation of Volleyball. Khaledi and his wife, Pam, have an eight-year old son, Cyrus.

Amanda Newell enters her second year with the Bulldogs Volleyball program. Prior to joining The Citadel, Newell spent two years as the head junior varsity coach at Northwood Academy in North Charleston, S.C., where she also served as assistant coach for the varsity team. Both years, she led her JV team to a second place finish in the conference.

From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the BigTen (1896), the MissouriValley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and alldistrict teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money.

The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. Championship History The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league includingTulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included including Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it

When head coach Carolyn Geiger took over the reigns as head volleyball coach for The Citadel in 2006, she took on the responsibility of developing a young program into a competitive volleyball team. Last season, the 2008 Bulldog Volleyball team completed their 11th year of participation in intercollegiate athletics. Eleven years into the game the Bulldogs have developed into a respectable volleyball program. For the first time since Geiger took over the program, she had three players sign during the early signing period, looking to continue their volleyball careers at The Citadel. After claiming two conference wins last season, Geiger became the winningest coach in program history against conference opponents with five SoCon victories in her three-year headcoaching career. She surpassed Wendy Anderson, who earned four conference wins in seven seasons.

The 2008 season opened with back-to-back victories for the Bulldogs. The Citadel started the season 2-0 with victories over Mississippi Valley State and Texas Southern in the Texas Southern Tournament. The winning streak soon came to an end when Arkansas State defeated them, 3-0, to close out the tournament. Rachel Sanders and Jessica Maas earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Starting the season out 2-1 was not bad for the Bulldogs, who seemed to be headed in the right direction. They opened up the month of September with the Holiday Inn Invitational Tournament in DeLand, Fla. With the return of Amanda Beal, the Bulldogs seemed ready for battle. However, the tournament did not turn out the way the Bulldogs had hoped. The Citadel lost all three matches in the tournament, losing to the College of Charleston, Stetson and Robert Morris. Beal had an outstanding performance and was named to the All-Tournament team. The Bulldogs returned home from Florida with a 2-4 record and had a matchup with their cross-town rival Charleston Southern up next. Unlike the previous season, the Bulldogs dropped a 3-1 decision to the Buccaneers in the CSU Field House. The Citadel’s losing streak would soon come to an end when they hosted the Aggies of North Carolina A&T at McAlister Field House. Unable to match the speed, power or intensity of the Bulldogs, the Aggies fell to The Citadel, 3-0. Another tournament highlighted the Bulldog schedule before they headed into conference play, traveling up the road to Orangeburg, S.C. for the South Carolina State Tournament. The Citadel met North Carolina Central in their first match of the tournament and dropped a hard fought battle to the Eagles, who claimed a 3-2 win. The Bulldogs bounced back in their next matchup against Southern Conference foe Wofford, downing the Terriers in three sets to take a 1-1 record in the tournament. A victory over Wofford was all the Bulldogs needed as the momentum continued to flow in their direction. Hampton and South Carolina State would be the Bulldogs’ next victims. The Bulldogs downed Hampton, 3-0, with South Carolina State left on the list. South Carolina State did not have much of a chance against the Bulldogs’ strength from the outside, falling to the Bulldogs, 3-1. With three straight victories in Orangeburg, the Bulldogs evened their record at 6-6. The Bulldogs opened conference action on the road against Furman and Wofford. The Paladins, who eventually won the Southern Conference title, defeated the Bulldogs in four sets. Wofford looked for revenge on the Bulldogs and had a hard time keeping them down. The Citadel took Wofford into five sets, but could not quite hang on, falling, 3-2.

The Citadel Bulldogs

One of the highlights of the 2008 season was defeating Appalachian State for the first time in program history. The Bulldogs went to Boone, N.C. and earned the SoCon win, 3-1, ending a 17-match losing streak and claiming the first conference win of the season for The Citadel.

The Citadel would continue conference play with two home matches against Georgia Southern and Davidson. The Eagles downed the Bulldogs, 3-0, while the Bulldogs were able to take one set away from Davidson, falling, 3-1, to the Wildcats. College of Charleston would be the next team to come into McAlister Field House to face The Citadel, but this time it was for a cause. The Bulldogs hosted their Dig for the Cure night, an effort to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The Bulldogs, wearing pink socks and pink ribbons to support breast cancer research, lost a hard fought battle to their neighbor, 3-0. The Bulldogs went on the road to play two matches against UNC Greensboro and Elon. Just like their previous conference matches, the Bulldogs were unable to come out victorious, falling, 3-0, to both UNC Greensboro and Elon due to an offen-

2008 Review sive struggle. Two other conference matches would follow with Chattanooga and Samford visiting McAlister Field House. Once again, the Bulldogs dropped both matches, 3-0, falling to 6-15 overall and 0-9 in the Southern Conference. A break from conference play would give the Bulldogs a trip to Spartanburg to face USC Upstate. The Bulldogs played one of their most impressive offensive matches of the season, but were unable to take home a victory, falling to the Spartans, 3-1.

The Citadel Bulldogs

With confidence, the Bulldogs went into the North Carolina mountains prepared for battle and a new team that was ready for the second half of the season. Appalachian State’s defense could not quite handle the offensive power of the Bulldogs. The Citadel went into Boone and took a 3-1 victory, earning their first conference victory of the season and their first victory over the Mountaineers in program history.

Up next, Western Carolina edged past The Citadel, 3-2, in a heartbreaking loss for the Bulldogs who were just coming off an exciting conference win. Another non-conference match would find its way in the schedule with the Bulldogs hosting the Rams of Winston-Salem State. The Rams, who were on a 10-game losing streak, were pretty confident that they could take down the Bulldogs, but the Bulldogs had a different ending to the story. The Citadel dominated the Rams from the first serve and their power was too much for the Rams to handle. The Bulldogs defeated the Rams in three sets, improving their record to 8-17. Coming into the month of November, the Bulldogs were more than halfway through the season and were still looking to add conference victories with seven games left to play. Two home games against Furman and Wofford would open the month of November. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they were not able to grab a victory. The Citadel had the opportunity to face the College of Charleston in John Kresse Arena for the last time. That match would be the last event to ever take place in that facility due to the opening of the Carolina First Center. The Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision to the Cougars in front of more than 1,500 people, one of the biggest crowds to watch The Citadel. With four games left in the season, the Bulldogs had four chances to earn another victory before the conclusion of the season. Two road games and two home games would conclude the 2008 season. A trip to Georgia Southern and Davidson did not turn out well, with the Bulldogs falling in both matches. Their last chances to claim victories were on Senior Night against Appalachian State or their last match of the season the following day against Western Carolina. The match against Appalachian State was dedicated to the three seniors who helped to mold and build the foundation of the Bulldog Volleyball program, Emily Hill, Rachel Sanderes and Ashley Winter. Even with emotions running high, the Bulldogs were unable to snatch another win from Appalachian State and falling to 8-23 overall. However, the Bulldogs closed out the 2008 season with a 3-1 victory over Western Carolina in McAlister Field House. Their victory over WCU gave the Catamounts their fourth consecutive loss. The Bulldogs recorded a season-high 70 kills, while Emily Hill recorded a season-high of 48 assists. With a 9-23 record, the Bulldogs finished the season with a three-match improvement from the previous season, having won six matches in 2007. They improved to two conference wins, which tied their conference victories under Geiger. The Bulldogs were one game shy of tying their best record ever under Geiger with a 10-24 record in Geiger’s first season. “I thought overall we were more competitive this season than last,” said Geiger. “We played several matches that were decided by a few points. We are on the right path with this young team. With each recruiting class, we are strengthening this program. Next year’s recruiting class will add more depth and talent to our existing lineup. Ending the season with a conference win will propel us to work hard in the offseason and build on our late success.”
