SIMPSON

HEAD COACH NINTH YEAR SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI ’98

Starting his ninth season at The Citadel and eighth as head coach, Toby Simpson leads a tennis program that is a force to be reckoned with in the Southern Conference. Simpson continues to develop cadet-student-athletes into successful tennis players and winning teams. Under Simpson’s guidance, The Citadel has reached the quarterfinals (or further) in the Southern Conference Tournament four of the last seven seasons. In the 2009 season, Simpson coached Sutantio to a 12-10 overall record, allowing him to tab SoCon All-Conference honors. The Citadel also defeated then nationally ranked No. 25 Chicago and posted wins over first-time opponents Lee’s McRae and Case Western Reserve.

The Bulldogs finished their 2008 season in the Southern Conference quarterfinals. The Citadel finished fourth in the SoCon with a 15-10 overall record. Daniel Dossetor, James Eason and All-SoCon freshman Yufo Sutantio were the top players in 2008, Eason became the first tennis player at The Citadel to receive SoCon’s Dave Hart Graduate Scholarship.

The Bulldogs struggled in 2007 but Eason and Dossetor proved once again to be among the best players in the Southern Conference. The duo made school history by being the first nationally ranked doubles team, ranking as high as 20th. Dossetor became the first singles player ever nationally ranked in school history at 118th in the nation. The Citadel finished 10th in the conference. The Bulldogs finished sixth in the league in 2006. James Eason finished the year as the only player in the SoCon to go undefeated in conference singles play, earning All-SoCon Second Team honors. Eason and Dossetor paired up to bring home All-SoCon first team honors in doubles. Simpson’s teams excelled in the classroom as well as two cadets- Eason and Nick Medica were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team and Medica was named Academic All-American second team. Prior to the 2006 season, the Bulldogs posted two fourth-place finishes in the league’s final rankings. During the 2003-04 campaign, the cadets started with an impressive SoCon record of 6-0. In his five years at The Citadel, Simpson had taken the Bulldogs from 11th in the SoCon to fourth.

Along with the team’s success, Coach Simpson has had many team members gain individual honors on the courts as well. In 2004-05, he coached Dossetor to the first team All-Southern Conference team as well as the SoCon Freshman of the Year Award. James Eason was also tabbed second team All-SoCon and Dossetor and Eason claimed first team All-SoCon selection in doubles. In 2003-04, under Simpson, Matt Stubbs was a first team All-SoCon selection and John Williams was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award. Stubbs was also a first team All-SoCon pick in his sophomore campaign, Simpson’s first year at The Citadel. Williams was awarded The Citadel Brigadier Foundation’s Senior Athlete of the Year Award as the top senior cadet-student-athlete at The Citadel as voted by fellow seniors.

2009-10 The Citadel Tennis Bulldogs Look To Have A Breakout Season With five starters returning this season, The Citadel Men’s Tennis Team is looking for a breakout season. With the addition of four new players; David Orces, Louis Morett, Jeremiah Dye and Scott Graves, the Bulldogs are optimistic about this season. Although on paper the Bulldogs look strong, head coach Toby Simpson knows there is still a lot of work to be done. “This is one of the most talented teams we’ve had,” said Simpson. “With the combination of our veteran players and young guys, we are looking for a strong season. We know we have a lot of work to get to where we want to be at the end of the season. Everyone is showing great dedication and passion to get there.” Lone senior Alberto Diaz is looking strong and All-SoCon junior Yufo Sutantio is looking to improve on his tremendous sophomore season. The sophomore class of Derek Dickey, Tripp Larkin and Josh Cook are all looking for breakout years for the Bulldogs. “There will be a lot of competition for all spots in the line-up and depth will be a key. We hope that by the start of the SoCon schedule, we will have a line-up that competes top to bottom with all of our opponents. I believe the newcomers will challenge our veterans for spots in the lineup in both singles and doubles daily,” said Simpson. Schedule Outlook The Citadel’s schedule is very strong as it includes not only tough SoCon opponents but challenging non-conference foes as well. The Bulldogs will open the 2010 season on Jan. 28 against Big South member Coastal Carolina at home at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston. 2009-10 The Citadel Tennis It was a very competitive season for the Bulldog tennis team as they ended their 2009 season with an 8-15 overall record and a 1-9 record in the Southern Conference, a slight set back from the 2008 season. Yufo Sutantio earned second team All-Conference for his performance in singles No. 1, finishing the season with a 12-11, 5-5 SoCon record in singles and a 7-8 record in doubles with Michael Kociecki. Match-by-Match The season began with a loss to Clemson on Jan. 24. But the Bulldogs quickly bounced back when they hosted Presbyterian for their home-opener on Jan. 31. The Citadel put on an impressive performance sweeping doubles play, 8-0, 9-7, and 9-7, gaining the first point. The Bulldogs dominated singles play, defeating the Blue Hose with an overall score of 6-1. The Citadel then traveled to Conway, S.C. to match-up against the undefeated Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Bulldogs won the doubles point but fell, 5-2. The Citadel was the first opponent to defeat the Chanticleers in doubles action in the 2009 season. The Dogs returned home to host first-time opponent Lee’s McRae. The overall score was tied 3-3 and Frank Larkin sealed the Bulldogs’ win in singles play. The Citadel slipped past with a final score of 4-3. Coming off a thrilling win, the Bulldogs made their way to Greenville, N.C. to rally against East Carolina and fell, 5-2. The Citadel returned to Charleston for a seven-game home stretch beginning with Longwood on March 6. After an intense match, The Citadel pulled out a 4-3 win. Then the Bulldogs defeated James Madison, 5-2, and shutout Case Western Reserve, 7-0, on March 9. The Bulldogs opened conference play on March 11 against Chattanooga. The Citadel downed the Mocs, 6-1, and then suffered a shutout loss to Appalachian State on March 12. Next, The Citadel hosted Jacksonville State. Martin King was the lone player to score as the Bulldogs fell, 6-1. The Citadel earned another win against then nationally ranked No. 25 Chicago, 6-1, as they ended their sevenmatch home skid on March 22. The Bulldogs went on the road for four matches during spring break. The Citadel lost to Charlotte and picked up a dominating win against Queens University of Charlotte. The Bulldogs then dropped matches at Wofford and Furman. The Citadel looked to turn around their season when they hosted first-time conference opponent Samford. The Bulldogs came close but Samford stole the win, 4-3. The next day, The Citadel traveled to Statesboro, Ga., to rally against Georgia Southern and suffered another loss, 6-1. The Citadel continued to struggle, losing to Davidson and College of Charleston at home. The Bulldogs would close out their 2009 regular season play at the top ranked SoCon teams. The Citadel fell, 5-2, against UNC Greensboro and was shutout by then nationally ranked No. 61 Elon. The Bulldogs earned the No. 10 seed in the 2009 Southern Conference Tennis Tournament on April 23-26. The Citadel rallied against No. 7 Appalachian State on Thursday, April 23 at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs fell, 4-0. Double D Alberto Diaz and Derek Dickey lead the Bulldogs in doubles in 2008. Together they tallied a 9-5, 3-2 SoCon record, the best on The Citadel team. Diaz and Dickey’s longest winning streak was four matches against Longwood, James

Madison, Case Western Reserve and Chattanooga. The duo only experienced two tiebreakers in the season, winning both. Award-Winning Diaz The Southern Conference announced on March 17 that Diaz was the SoCon Tennis Player of the Week for his performance during the week of March 9-15. Diaz went 3-1 in both singles and doubles earning wins over James Madison, Case Reserve and Chattanooga. He was the only Bulldog this season to receive this honor. Freshmen Leave Their Mark Dickey, Joshua Cook and Frank Larkin all earned conference wins in their debut season. Dickey showed that he is a strong competitor in doubles and Larkin dominated in No. 6 singles. Cook proved to be a flexible player competing in doubles with Martin King, Frederic Petrilli and Kociecki. He only rallied in one singles match and fell to then nationally ranked No. 61 Elon. Bulldogs in the Community Year after year, head coach Toby Simpson and the Bulldog tennis teams not only swing for success on the court but in the community as well. The Citadel participated in the Win 4 Life program on March 4, 2009 at the Earle Tennis Center on The Citadel’s campus. The Bulldogs hosted several activities including a tour of The Citadel’s campus. Participants also had time on the court with current players. This program was one of many activities for the 2009 Family Circle Cup. The Citadel also gave back by participating as instructors in the “Tennis in the City” program on April 13 in Charleston. The Bulldogs taught inner-city youth the basic skills alongside professional players from the 2009 Family Circle Cup. The Last Swing King was the only senior on the 2009 Bulldog team. King finished the 2009 season 8-14, 2-8 SoCon. He was the only Bulldog to collect a point against Jacksonville State. Though The Citadel lost King, the Bulldogs return All-SoCon Yufo Sutanto, Alberto Diaz, Frederic Petrilli and young talent like Derek Dickey, Tripp Larkin and Joshua Cook. Four new faces have been added to the 2010 roster. Scott Graves joins The Citadel from Lexington, S.C., Luis Morett from Leon, Mexico, David Orcer from Guayaquil, Ecuador and a standout transfer from Coker College, Jeremiah Dye.

2009-10 The Citadel Tennis

The Southern Conference, which began its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money. Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932.

The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. Leadership John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Iamarino has promoted the Southern Conference through an ambitious agenda which has improved competition, upgraded compliancerelated matters, launched the conference’s Hall of Fame and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in 1974. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C., to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current conference logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C., to Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts. Championship History The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee.
