Dining with a View in Mt. Washington
There are few places in the world that can deliver the spectacular views of Mt. Washington. Most of the spectacular photos you’ve seen depicting the view overlooking the Point and downtown Pittsburgh originate from here.
As you would expect, the restaurants located along Grandview Avenue offer the same breathtaking view. As opposed to a static photo, an evening spent dining on Mt. Washington allows you to relax and fully experience the view amongst friends and loved ones and to slowly absorb all it has to offer. Mt Washington was originally know as “Coal Hill” as there were several coal mines that operated at the foot of the mountain in the mid 1800’s. Many immigrants settled here and over time grew tired of the steep incline they needed to navigate to return home from work. Recalling the inclines from their mountainous homes in Germany, the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines were both constructed in the 1860’s and 1870’s to make the commute up and down the mountain much more efficient. Both inclines still operate today!
Two tunnels run through Mt Washington, the Liberty Tunnel and the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Both of these are major carriers of traffic today. Many of you may have come through the Fort Pitt tunnel if you drove in from the west. The view of downtown as you clear the Fort Pitt Tunnel is one of the most memorable of any major city in the world.
The high elevation of Mt Washington provides the best views of downtown Pittsburgh, the North Shore and the surrounding area. The many restaurants along Grandview Ave have capitalized on this and elevated dining is quite literal here in every aspect.
