CYRANO DE BERGERAC BY EDMOND ROSTAND TRANSLATED BY EDWIN MORGAN Edwin Morgan (1920–2010) spent his whole life in Glasgow, apart from four years’ military service in the Middle East. Through his writing, however, he explored different eras, cultures, characters and forms, including translations from over a dozen languages. He combined experimental sound and visual poetry with a focus on Glaswegian voices and places, delighting in the city’s gallus irreverence. He explored space and time through inventive science fiction poetry. His internationally recognised poetry, including tender gay love poems sometimes half concealed, offered new perspectives to a largely traditional Scottish public. Poetic drama, from medieval French and Dutch folk plays in the 1980s to the more ambitious Cyrano (1992) and Phaedra (2000), seemed a natural development. His millennial A.D. trilogy about Jesus challenged pious interpretations of a radical message. Terminally ill with cancer, Morgan continued to produce powerful, prize-winning poetry in Cathures (2002) and A Book of Lives (2007), becoming Scotland’s National Poet or Makar in 2004. Biography by Professor James McGonigal

A NOTE FROM THE PRODUCERS CITIZENS THEATRE AT TRAMWAY Cyrano De Bergerac marks our first production at Tramway since we moved out of our Gorbals home. Over the next two years, the Citizens Theatre will undergo the most comprehensive redevelopment of our Victorian building since it opened as a theatre in 1878 and will ensure that the Citizens is accessible to all audiences, artists, participants and the local community. We are delighted to have found a temporary home at Tramway with its distinctive, contemporary performance space which offers a new and exhilarating experience for our audiences. We are incredibly grateful to our co-producers, National Theatre of Scotland and Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh for making this production possible and extend the warmest of thanks to all Tramway staff for welcoming us into their venue. Cyrano de Bergerac is a defining piece of contemporary Scottish theatre and it has been a privilege to remount Edwin Morgan’s extraordinary adaptation of this joyful play. Thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy the performance. Dominic Hill & Judith Kilvington, Citizens Theatre Joint Chief Executives. citz.co.uk

NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND As the National Theatre of Scotland, enabling the incredible ambition of our finest theatre-makers is at the heart of what we do. Cyrano de Bergerac is a Scots classic, and I am thrilled that Dominic Hill is bringing his unique spirit of theatrical invention to this new production. Bringing together an ensemble of incredible acting talent, a world-class creative team and Scotland’s three major theatre companies, it has been a joy to collaborate on a play that is a celebration of theatre itself. Jackie Wylie, National Theatre of Scotland Artistic Director and Chief Executive nationaltheatrescotland.com

ROYAL LYCEUM THEATRE EDINBURGH Cyrano De Bergerac is one of my favourite stories. I suppose that’s hardly surprising since Cyrano is the story of the seductive power of words which writer wouldn’t love it? It is a truly timeless tale about the nature of beauty and hidden desire, which every generation seems to return to, re-invent and take to heart anew. For some, Derek Jacobi’s 1983 televised RSC version was their Cyrano, for others it was Gerard Depardieu’s epic, Oscar-winning film, Steve Martin’s comedy version – Roxanne or more recently the female Cyrano of indie hit The Truth About Cats and Dogs. For me it was Communicado Theatre Company’s performance of this wonderful version by one of Scotland’s great poets Edwin Morgan at the 1992 Edinburgh International Festival. It is a simply brilliant re-telling. It stole my heart from the moment I heard it and I have remained in love with its flamboyant, tender, joyous words ever since, so when I became Artistic Director at The Lyceum, this was firmly on the wish list. I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to join forces with the Citizens Theatre and the National Theatre of Scotland to bring this unforgettable tale back to the Scottish stage in such style with this fantastic company of actor musicians. I hope you fall in love with it as I did.
