GLASGOW GIRLS CONCEIVED BY CORA BISSETT BOOK BY DAVID GREIG

A Pachamama Productions, National Theatre of Scotland, Theatre Royal Stratford East and Regular Music co-production in association with Citizens Theatre and Richard Jordan Productions Ltd MAIN THEATRE 30 Aug – 3 Sep 7.30pm MATINEES 31 Aug 1.30pm 1 Sep 10.30am 3 Sep 2.30pm POST SHOW TALK 1 Sep. See p21

Cora Bissett and David Greig’s life-affirming, song-filled Scottish drama returns in a new production to the Citizens Theatre. Glasgow Girls is based on the true story of seven feisty teenagers who have their lives changed forever when their school friend and her asylum-seeking family are forcibly taken from their home to be deported. The young women are galvanised to take a stand and fight for the life of their friend and, ultimately, for the rights of all children of asylum-seekers.

BSL

The real Glasgow Girls’ story became one of the most powerful asylum campaigns in recent history – challenging the government, capturing the imagination of the media and inspiring a whole community to unite behind its residents.

TRAINSPOTTING BY IRVINE WELSH ADAPTED BY HARRY GIBSON “ Who needs reasons when you’ve got heroin?”

A Citizens Theatre production MAIN THEATRE 14 Sep – 8 Oct 7.30pm PREVIEWS 14 & 15 Sep 7.30pm MATINEES 24 Sep, 1 & 8 Oct 2.30pm POST SHOW TALK 27 Sep. See p21 CURTAIN RAISER 29 Sep 6.15pm. See p20 SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS 20 & 21 Sep. See p20

Trainspotting hurtles through the heroin hinterlands of Thatcher-era Leith. In a world where work and opportunities are scarce Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud rail against the trappings of a successful lifestyle held out of their reach and seek life through the point of a needle. Coarse, intense, and often hilarious, Trainspotting defined a generation. 23 years after publication it remains one of the most important, hard-hitting stories of our time.

BSL AD CAP

Directed by Gareth Nicholls who has received universal praise for his previous Citizens productions of Into That Darkness, Blackbird and Vanya.

See p36 for details TICKETS 50p – £22.50 | £9.50 previews See pp40-41 for all prices

Before the globally successful film adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting, there was a theatre production at the Citizens that started it all. As the world waits for the film’s sequel, we’re bringing the notorious story back to the stage.

Recommended for ages 16+. Scenes of violence, sexual content, drug references and very strong language.

THE CHEVIOT, THE STAG AND THE BLACK, BLACK OIL BY JOHN MCGRATH “ A story with a beginning, a middle – but as yet, no end.”

A Dundee Rep production MAIN THEATRE 18 – 22 Oct 7.30pm MATINEES 19 & 22 Oct 2.30pm POST SHOW TALK 19 Oct. See p21 TEACHERS' WORKSHOP 20 Oct. See p20 BSL

See p36 for details TICKETS £12.50 – £22.50 See pp40-41 for all prices DIRECTOR Joe Douglas

Dundee Rep’s five-star, sell-out production of John McGrath’s musical drama tells the history and the tragedy of Scotland, performed as a Highland ceilidh. Song, humour and drama are intermixed creating a unique theatrical event that remains as vital and relevant today as it was when 7:84 first presented it at the Citizens, over 40 years ago. This extraordinary play looks at the exploitation and economic changes in the Scottish Highlands throughout history. The story begins with the ruthless evictions of 18th-century Highland crofters in favour of the more economically-viable Cheviot sheep. The 19th century brings the development of stag hunts in game parks, while the 20th century sees the exploitation of resources during the North Sea oil boom of the 1970s. An unmissable opportunity to see “arguably the single most important show in the whole history of Scottish theatre.” The Scotsman

THE GORBALS VAMPIRE BY JOHNNY MCKNIGHT Based loosely on an extraordinary true story.

A Citizens Theatre Community production MAIN THEATRE 28 – 29 Oct 7.30pm MATINEE 29 Oct 2.30pm TICKETS £10.50 – £14.50 See pp40-41 for concession prices DIRECTORS Guy Hollands Neil Packham DESIGNER Neil Haynes LIGHTING Stuart Jenkins COMPOSER Michael John McCarthy

In 1954, playgrounds across the Gorbals were abuzz with the rumours of a man with iron teeth who had abducted and eaten two local young boys. One night in late September, hundreds of children aged 4–14 gathered at the Southern Necropolis. Armed with whatever they could find, they mounted a courageous campaign to track down and kill the Gorbals Vampire. Johnny McKnight’s script is inspired by the dramatic events of that night, which will be brought back to life by a large company of up to 50 performers drawn from our local community and from across Glasgow. Directed by Guy Hollands and Neil Packham. If you’d like to get involved in this exciting new production see p28 for how you can join in. No experience necessary! Recommended for ages 12+ LIVE IN THE GORBALS? If you have a G5 postcode, you can buy tickets for The Gorbals Vampire and all shows in our Autumn 2016 season, for only £2 with a Gorbals Card. Find out more about how to get your free Gorbals Card on p35. Gorbals Card tickets for Hansel & Gretel are £5.

In the summer streets of Bath, social climber and “pineapple of politeness” Mrs Malaprop is determined to make her niece Lydia Languish a fortuitous match. Lydia, however, fuelled by an excessive indulgence in romantic fiction, has other ideas and plans to fall in love with a penniless man. Enter the inconveniently wealthy Captain Jack Absolute, who disguises himself as a poor soldier in an attempt to fulfil Lydia's romantic ambition and capture her heart, with hilarious consequences. The Rivals was inspired by Sheridan's own romantic entanglements, which fed the gossip-mongers of his day with endless scandal and tittle-tattle. Artistic Director Dominic Hill directs a new version of this comedy of manners.

The Rivals is supported by Friends of the Citizens. Find out more about how you can become a Friend on pp32-33.

Sculptures breathe and kings weep in the Bard’s late masterpiece of wit and wisdom, The Winter’s Tale. Cheek by Jowl tackle the countless hairpin turns from violence to farce, through multiple countries and over the course of 16 years in a fiercely contemporary production. When King Leontes suspects his wife of infidelity, he throws her in prison and initiates a chain of events that destroys his once-happy family. Fundamental questions about redemption and forgiveness are tackled in this tour-de-force interpretation, testing the limits of hope and humanity. Playing at the Citizens Theatre for the first time, Cheek by Jowl is one of the world's leading theatre companies and a regular on the global festival circuit. Their production of The Winter's Tale has received rave reviews during its European tour. “ As invigorating and intoxicating as shot of adrenaline: as exciting as theatre can get!” Luxemburger Wort
