WELCOME TO OUR NEW SEASON We’re delighted to present a wide range of powerful shows this Autumn, including a Pulitzer prize-winner, a Shakespeare tragedy, work by our Young Co. and the Citizens Community Company (celebrating its 10th year), and another of our unique Christmas shows for all the family. In addition, we are pleased to be able to offer a sneak preview of an Edinburgh International Festival show in August, to welcome back the National Theatre of Scotland, and to see the return of a production of Martin McDonagh’s fabulous play, The Pillowman, alongside a number of other compelling shows. We also tour The Sound Of My Voice to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Museum of Dreams, TAG’s new show for 6-8 year old children tours Scotland, performed in its own purpose built venue. Behind the scenes we continue to work extensively within communities and schools. Our pioneering projects include a new partnership with the National Library of Scotland and the Hunterian
Museum to create a theatrical exploration of Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory, our Dragonfly storytelling project in nurseries and primary schools, a large-scale Christmas show in Dalbeattie High School, a continued partnership with the Sense Over Sectarianism initiative in primary and secondary schools and skills training courses for businesses. Please take a look at our brand new website for more details of the vast range of work on offer. Together with our award-winning work in Scotland, we’ve also been making international links, touring to Germany and the Netherlands and participating in a unique Community Company exchange with Länsteatern i Örebro in Sweden. All of this work is of course meaningless without you, our audiences, participants and supporters. Throughout this brochure we’ve featured just a few of the wide range of people who make the Citizens what it is. Join us this autumn for great theatre experiences. THE
LAST WITCH BY RONA MUNRO A new play about the last woman to be executed for witchcraft in Scotland. Exclusive Glasgow preview of the Edinburgh International Festival show. Dornoch, northern Scotland, 1727. In the claustrophobic heat of summer, a woman’s apparent ability to manipulate the power of land and sea stirs suspicion. Janet Horne can cure beasts, call the wind and charm fish out of the sea. Or can she? Refusing to deny claims of sorcery, she incenses the community. The Last Witch is based on the historical account of Janet Horne, the last woman to be executed for witchcraft in Scotland. Accused by friends and neighbours of making a pact with the devil, she was sentenced to death by burning.
Commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival from Scottish playwright Rona Munro.

NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND
THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA BY FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA IN A NEW VERSION BY RONA MUNRO The National Theatre of Scotland presents a major new version of Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba. Set in contemporary Scotland, Rona Munro’s bristling, edgy translation is directed by John Tiffany and features Siobhan Redmond in the title role.
Cast: Jo Freer, Louise Ludgate, Vanessa Johnson, Anne Lacey, Mary McCusker, Myra McFadyen, Una McLean, Heather Nimmo, Julie Wilson Nimmo, Carmen Pieraccini, Siobhan Redmond and Morag Stark.
Following the gangland execution of her husband, the formidable matriarch Bernarda Alba will do anything to safeguard her family’s dubious fortune and the future of her five headstrong daughters. A deal is struck – a marriage of convenience between her eldest girl and the son of a business rival. All Bernarda has to do is ensure that the wedding happens, and quickly.
DIRECTED BY JOHN TIFFANY
One of the most celebrated European dramas of the 20th century, Lorca described it as a “drama of women in the villages of Spain” – a theme that is electrifyingly transposed in this version to the tough communities of Glasgow’s East End. Faithfully preserving Lorca’s sense of boiling tension and impending tragedy, the production lines up a cast of twelve Scottish women who bring this classic text thrillingly up to date. Contains strong language throughout. Recommended for 14+

Once there, it is not a missing child that the policeman finds but rather a community of strange islanders in thrall to the ancient, pagan gods of fertility, practicing the most bizarre of rituals.
