community with the theatre building. Projects outwith the theatre this Autumn include work in HMP Barlinnie in partnership with Motherwell College and the Scottish Prison Service, working with over 50 prisoners on a large-scale theatre production, Platform 2:10. Other recent work with young people has focused on developing literacy and financial management skills, countering the stigma surrounding stammering, exploring the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and on devising unflinching performances for Rape Crisis Scotland. Find out more about our project work on p22–23. In the past three years we’ve received 40 awards and nominations; worked in Sweden, USA, Holland, Germany; forged links with artists and companies in Japan, Iran and South Africa; and also worked extensively across Scotland. We’re already planning an exciting season for Spring 2011 which includes Marilyn, a world premiere co-production with the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh and Dunsinane, an RSC/NTS touring show. See p15 for more details. But all of this work only has meaning because of you – our audiences, participants and supporters. Join us for another great season at the Citizens.

Are you sitting comfortably? Seat Restoration FUND

The Citizens Theatre first opened in 1878 and is the second oldest operational theatre in the UK (by just 6 weeks!). The building retains many of its Victorian architectural features and has the most complete working Victorian theatre machinery in the UK. We take great pride in our rich history and our importance as a Glasgow institution. However, we are also committed to providing the very best facilities for our loyal audience. Â You may have noticed that the seats in the main auditorium have become increasingly worn. They are in fact over 20 years old. Everyone wants to look their best and the Citizens is no different. The cost of replacing all of the seats in the main auditorium is ÂŁ250,000. The upgrade process will be in 3 stages. Phase 1 will see an upgrade of all stalls seats with the dress and upper circles to follow. We will in the future look to undertake a full restoration of the theatre but see the comfort of our audience as our first priority.

We are looking at a number of ways of raising the funds and more details will be announced during the autumn season about how you can get involved with this campaign. We want to ensure that you are sitting comfortably for every performance at the Citizens Theatre, and we hope you will show your support for this vital campaign over the next 2 years. Thank you for your continued support and generosity. DONATIONS If you would like to make a donation now please contact our Head of Development, Melanie Aram on 0141 418 6242 / melanie@citz.co.uk or you can make a donation at our Box Office or online at citz.co.uk. Naming a seat through our Seat Dedication Scheme will also contribute directly to the fund.

CITIZENS COMPANY CITIZENS THEATRE, LIVE THEATRE & THE MARKET THEATRE

THE GIRL IN THE YELLOW DRESS BY CRAIG HIGGINSON

A dark, witty and sexually-charged psychological drama. This international collaboration with the acclaimed Market Theatre in South Africa and Live Theatre in Newcastle brings Craig Higginson’s powerful new play to Glasgow, following its Edinburgh Festival premiere. Celia, a beautiful young English teacher, has started a new life in Paris. But when she takes on a French-Congolese pupil, a relationship develops that starts to unravel dark truths from her past. Brimming with humour, rage and longing, this gripping play is both a minute exploration of an increasingly hazardous romantic entanglement and an insight into the tensions around class, race, language and identity that lie at the heart of present-day South Africa. 04 | 05

CITIZENS COMPANY

BY ANTHONY BURGESS ‘What’s it going to be then, eh?’ In a world of high unemployment, state surveillance and fierce repression, the young get their kicks from random violence. Alex is with his gang of droogs in his favourite milkbar, hyping them up for their nightly orgy of opportunistic brutality. A new government is in power determined once and for all to stamp out this cycle of aggression. With prisons overflowing, something has to be done to control the perpetrators. But our charismatic delinquent narrator isn’t a straightforward psychopath. His quick wit is dangerously alluring and he has a penchant for classical music, especially Beethoven’s Ninth.

06 | 07

As we follow his rehabilitation by the state through extreme psychological conditioning we are left wondering if being forced to be good is in fact more evil than sin itself. From the iconic novel by Anthony Burgess, made famous by the controversial Stanley Kubrick film, this hard-hitting and disconcerting stage play is a must-see experience. Recommended for 14+

TAG presents a low budget indie comedy musical about a girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown—played out by four actors and a big fat motorbike which goes vrrooommm. Duck Macatarsney cares for her biker dad whose MS is getting increasingly bad. Her Dad – Duke – is a spliff smoking (for medicinal reasons you understand), bike riding, heavy metal and horror movie loving, pizza eating widower who’s brought up Duck since the death of her Mother in a crash. The two of them are just about surviving when one morning the Duke wakes up blind and the Duck hears that the Social Services are coming to take her away. The Monster in the Hall follows Duck as she tries to protect her world from the terrifying prospect of change. SCOTTISH OPERA

CARMEN BY GEORGES BIZET NEW TRANSLATION BY CHRISTOPHER COWELL Scottish Opera performs at the Citizens for the first time with a brand new production. Beautiful gypsies, obsession, bullfighters and some of the liveliest rhythms in opera…it can only be Carmen. This new production is set in 1960s Spain, a country firmly entrenched in General Franco’s rightwing regime. Women are oppressed, the gypsies ghettoised, the country is riddled with poverty and black-market smuggling is rife. Bizet’s boldly seductive opera has been a world favourite for over a century. From the sultry ‘Habanera’ to the naively passionate ‘Flower Song’ and the rousing ‘Toreador’s Song’, Bizet’s ever-popular music brings out the earthy vitality of his characters. SARAH JANE MORRIS Two performances from the soulful singer-songwriter. WHERE IT HURTS Her life story in words and music Sarah Jane Morris’ one woman show is an intimate, autobiographical performance named after her recent album ‘Where It Hurts’. She reveals her life story from her father’s imprisonment when she was just 17 and becoming a political activist during the Thatcher years to having a number 1 hit with The Communards, running her own record label and marrying one of The Pogues. She is accompanied by Tony Remy (guitarist for Annie Lennox) and Kevin Armstrong (guitarist for David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Paul McCartney). The show was launched to critical acclaim at last year’s Edinburgh Festival. MAIN THEATRE Fri 24 September, 7.30pm Tickets £15 (restricted view £12)

GLASGAY! FESTIVAL

PANIC PATTERNS BY ZOË STRACHAN & LOUISE WELSH

A new play from award-winning novelists Louise Welsh and Zoë Strachan. Ornithologists Jacq and Fay are on a remote island in the far north of Scotland investigating sudden changes in bird migration patterns. Fay believes these changes signify forthcoming disaster. Jacq thinks the isolation is making her younger lover paranoid. But they were meant to leave the island three days ago, their boat home still hasn’t arrived and their radio has been dead for a week. When the decommissioned lighthouse across the bay shines back into life, the two women are forced to make a crucial decision. Sometimes tender, sometimes disorientating, Panic Patterns draws on contemporary fears to create an edgy, suspenseful drama for a new decade.

ON STAGE A look back at our 2009/10 season… and what you thought of it. Othello

My Name Is Rachel Corrie

“ …world-class quality…a performance that stuck in the mind long after the show was over.”

“ A wonderful, intimate staging with a subtle, moving performance. Tears were running down my face by the end of it.”

Audience Review

Topdog /Underdog “ …brilliant show! The two actors were incredible. I can’t believe they nailed the card trick every time. Exhilarating theatre.” Audience Comment Card

Three Sisters “ Excellent adaptation, great acting and visually gorgeous…look forward to more work from these talented students.” Audience Review

Grapes of Wrath

Cinderella “ Just saw Cinders, it was omg magical. The most beautiful thing I’ve seen all year” Audience Comment Facebook

Backbeat

“ First performance I have seen with a mixed cast of full time and community actors. It was clear that the commitment was terrific and genuine…a production to be proud of.” Audience Review

“ Quite simply, the best two hours of theatre I’ve seen in a long, long time. As a Glaswegian I’d like to keep Backbeat all to myself, but this show deserves to be in London’s West End.” Audience Review

One Million Tiny Plays About Britain “ I enjoyed it so much I came to see the play twice. Very, very clever, funny and observant. A really great snapshot of life in Britain. Loved it!” Audience Comment Card ead all of our audience reviews in full on our website and leave your own comments. R Or you can feedback to us in other ways — see p28.

FUNDER FOCUS

INDIVIDUAL GIVING Our aim is to create outstanding theatre; to nurture young talent and to develop ground-breaking education programmes. To achieve all this we need your help. Each year, in addition to the valuable income we receive from ticket sales and our core funds, we raise substantial sums from other sources. You can help us by making a contribution which will support our artistic work on stage and pioneering work in our communities.

Scott+Co. and the Citizens Community Company Scott+Co.’s sponsorship helped the Citizens develop a special community theatre project –a full scale production of The Grapes of Wrath on our main stage. As a socially responsible business Scott+Co. signed up for production sponsorship of The Grapes of Wrath because our partnership offered an opportunity for the business to develop its role within the local community. This production brought together regular members of the Community Company, drawn from every age range and walk of life and first-time actors from Turning Point, Scotland - a rehabilitation service for people with alcohol and drug addictions, mental health and learning disabilities. Participants are given a unique opportunity to be part of a professional rehearsal and production process which is part of the Citizens Theatre’s ongoing commitment to provide rewarding theatre experiences to the widest possible range of members of our community. Scott+Co. have previously sponsored projects that combine social action and artistic innovation and this project underpins that work to inspire people to make positive choices in their lives.

In return we are pleased to offer you opportunities to get closer to the company. Front Row @ The Citz This is our general donations scheme – you can pick up a leaflet in the foyer or donate online. All donations will be gratefully received and supporters invited to an annual event to meet with the creative team. Citizens Seat Dedication Scheme £500 Dedicate a seat in our Victorian auditorium to a loved one, or someone you admire and respect. We can help you remember someone special and plan an event to mark the occasion.

FIND OUT MORE For further information of how to get involved please call Melanie Aram, Head of Development on 0141 418 6240 or visit the Support section of our website. CITIZENS THEATRE LIMITED Registered in Scotland No. SCO22513 and is a Scottish Charity No. SCO01337

“ We are keen supporters of the Citizens Theatre and are delighted to support a dynamic and innovative Glasgow organisation. The theatre is a Scottish institution but one that has a far reaching reputation outside of Glasgow, a quality we recognise in our own business.” Pointer Ltd
