Introducing Dominic Hill, Artistic Director “one of Scotland’s leading theatrical talents” Herald In October 2011, we welcome Dominic Hill as the new Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre. Throughout his career, he has developed an impressive reputation for staging classics in highly imaginative ways that make them accessible to contemporary audiences. His raucous version of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt for Dundee Rep won a plethora of awards and subsequently toured the UK with the National Theatre of Scotland. He recently directed Falstaff for Scottish Opera and The City Madam by Massinger for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

“a talent for classical drama which is genuinely world class” Daily Telegraph Admired and respected by his peers for his artistic vision and leadership, Dominic’s appointment as the new Artistic Director was met with great excitement in the press, as befitting the historic legacy of the theatre’s creative spirit. A prolific theatre director, Dominic cut his teeth as Associate Director of Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Perth Theatre. He was Joint Artistic Director of Dundee Rep from 2003–2007 and joins the Citizens following a successful 4 year Directorship of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.

02 | 03

His productions have been the recipient of many CATS Awards (Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland) including 2 in the recent 2011 awards for his production of The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain. Citizens audiences may also know him from Edinburgh International Festival previews of The Last Witch which were staged at the Citizens in 2009. Looking forward to joining a distinguished line of former Artistic Directors, Dominic said: “I would like the Citizens to be the most exciting and provocative theatre in Scotland–a theatre that takes risks, that creates work that is both epic and intimate, that is both brand new and drawn from the classical repertoire. The Citizens is a theatre that is alive with history and theatricality and I can’t wait to get started.”

MEN SHOULD WEEP By Ena Lamont Stewart

“Men Should Weep is one of the very best plays ever to be written about the corrosive effects of poverty. This is not a problem that has ever gone away. It is the story of people living with the pressure of poverty and unemployment today in Glasgow, Manchester, London or any city on the planet. I’m excited to bring the play back to audiences here at home.” GraHAM McLaren (Director)

A moving, funny and unflinching portrayal of hand to mouth poverty in 1930s Glasgow. Despite cramped tenement living and the turmoil of seven children, there is laughter and strength in the Morrison family. Through the misfortunes, trials and tribulations, mother Maggie just about holds her brood together. But with sniping neighbours, an unemployed husband and children taking flight, it is getting harder to maintain appearances. Remarkably ahead of its time when written in 1947, Ena Lamont Stewart’s landmark play is now hailed as a contemporary Scottish classic. Recommended for 14+

Brian and Sheila are struggling to cope with caring for their disabled child. He is a harassed teacher who works at an unruly British comprehensive and is defiantly unsentimental about their situation. Sheila on the other hand is a resilient mother who desperately clings to the hope that one day her daughter will overcome her medical condition.

Directed by PhilLip Breen Designed by Max Jones Lighting Design by Tina MacHugh

Finding it easier to confide in the audience than each other, they concoct fantasy games and joke routines, replaying key episodes in their life story like practiced marital rituals.

Phillip Breen has previously directed The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, The Shadow of a Gunman and The Caretaker at the Citizens–all to critical acclaim–and recently directed a touring production of The Hard Man.

Nothing is off limits for Brian’s mockery including his doting, decent wife who plays along to keep her husband happy. But as they are pushed to the limits of emotional trauma, it becomes a self-defeating means of deflecting the heart-ache within. Walking a tightrope between humour and heartbreak, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg endures as a poignant comedy and biting social satire. Historic Play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg was premiered at the Citizens Theatre in 1967, directed by Michael Blakemore. It was a major success, transferring to London’s West End and then Broadway. A Tony Award winner, it was famously revived in 2001 as both a stage and television play starring Eddie Izzard, Victoria Hamilton and Prunella Scales. More than 40 years on, it returns to its original home.

By Alan McHugh A magical family Christmas show full of fun, suspense and beautiful songs. Hansel and Gretel are like any brother and sister. Cheeky and mischievous, they squabble with each other all day and live a happy life with their mother and father in the forest. But their world is turned upside down when a dreadful famine strikes the land and an envious, old witch plots to have their father all to herself. Abandoned in the forest, they must stop their quarrelling and work together to defeat the wicked witch–and avoid being cooked for dinner! An original twist on the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale, Christmas at the Citizens promises inventive storytelling accompanied by original live music in an intimate theatre where everyone can feel part of the story.

A Scottish Opera and Northern Ireland Opera Co-Production

ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD By Jacques Offenbach New translation by Rory Bremner World Premiere Offenbach’s irreverent romp features some of the funniest dialogue and daftest situations in French opera. Updated to the present day, director Oliver Mears (Artistic Director of Northern Ireland Opera) draws gleeful parallels with our media-savvy, celebrity-obsessed world. Eurydice is married to Orpheus, a musician who, in her opinion, plays the violin badly. Really badly. Fed up with her husband, she falls for the randy and devious Pluto. Meanwhile, bored to tears and spying an interesting situation unfolding, Public Opinion muscles in to ‘help’ Orpheus rescue his wife. But does she want to be rescued? Offenbach’s catchy tunes and wicked sense of humour take the characters from one ridiculous situation to another, culminating in his riotous ‘Cancan’.

SPAIN Glasgay! Festival

By James Ley Co-created and performed by Mark Kydd World Premiere You can’t run away from your problems…but you can take them to nicer places. At 22 Ally relocated from Edinburgh to Gran Canaria and he’s never looked back. He hasn’t had time. He’s been too busy enjoying himself…and other people. Lots of other people. In fact, in the twenty years he’s been on the island he’s averaged a man a week. But at 42, Ally is entering his promiscuous person’s mid-life crisis. As he waits for the arrival of his latest gentleman caller, he finds a small memento that takes him back to his life in Scotland. Spain tells the story of an ex-pat Scot, thrown into an existentialist crisis and forced to begin a long journey home. Project Spotlight

You’re not from around here are you? Earlier this year, a new musical stage production of DIVIDED CITY challenged Glasgow schoolchildren to confront religious and racial intolerance.

“crackingly fine musical staging…bridges the divide of partisan loyalties with the energy of wholehearted team spirit.” Herald Review Our Citizens Learning and Tag team joined forces with Glasgow Education Services to deliver a Youth Music Initiative project–the first stage version of Theresa Breslin’s award-winning book, Divided City. Two S2 pupils from every secondary school in the city were invited to form the cast of the production.

“it was thrilling to see Divided City on stage and it had such an authenticity and truth because it was performed by Glasgow kids themselves.” Theresa Breslin, Author

A cast of 45 were put through a rigorous 3 month rehearsal schedule culminating in 4 memorable performances on the main stage of the Citizens Theatre.

Divided City was sponsored by Scott + Co and funded by Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative in partnership with Glasgow City Council and Sense Over Sectarianism.

Friendships were formed between schoolchildren from opposite ends of the city, as issues were explored that were dominating media headlines, with events on the football field providing timely examples of bigotry and sectarianism at play in real life. The committed young cast received standing ovations from audiences and it was not long before conversations turned to the only question left: ‘when can we do it again?’

FUNDER FOCUS

INDIVIDUAL GIVING Our aim is to create outstanding theatre; to nurture young talent and to develop ground-breaking education programmes. To achieve all this we need your help. Each year, in addition to the valuable income we receive from ticket sales and our core funds, we raise substantial sums from other sources. You can help us by making a contribution which will support our artistic work on stage and pioneering work in our communities.

Scott+Co and Divided City Scott+Co, a leading firm of Sheriff Officers and Messengers-at-Arms with offices throughout Scotland, returned as sponsors of the Citizens Theatre in May 2011. Scott+Co supported Divided City, a collaboration between Glasgow City Council Education Services, Sense over Sectarianism and the Citizens Theatre with funding from Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative. Divided City saw a cast of 45 young people drawn from Glasgow Secondary Schools perform in a musical adaptation of Theresa Breslin’s renowned novel of the same name. After 12 weeks of workshops and rehearsals, the pupils performed to sell-out audiences on the main stage of the Citizens Theatre. By sponsoring the project, Scott+Co helped the theatre to stage a full-scale piece of theatre that maximised the number of young people involved from all areas of Glasgow. See p18–19. Recognising the value of social action through the arts, Scott+Co have also sponsored an anti-sectarianism tour of Glasgow schools in September 2011–to be delivered by the Citizens Learning Team.

Seat Restoration Fund We want to ensure you are sitting comfortably for every performance at the Citizens Theatre. Over 20 years old, our seats are in great need of repair. We are asking all audience members to add a donation to their ticket transaction to help us raise the funds we need to renovate the seats in our beautiful Victorian auditorium. Pick up a leaflet or find out more at: citz.co.uk/support_us Citizens Seat Dedication Scheme £500 Dedicate a seat in our Victorian auditorium to a loved one, or someone you admire. We can help you remember someone special and plan an event to mark the occasion. See p3 for more info

“ We are proud to be the ticket sponsor of the Citizens Theatre, a venue which inspires excellence and yet remains accessible to a wide range of people. We seek to partner organisations with a strong sense of identity and relevance to Glasgow but that have an appeal nationally and internationally. The Citizens offers exactly this.” Auchentoshan Single Malt Whisky
