April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary and falls in love. But the cold face of Big Brother is always watching and the door to Room 101 can swing open in the blink of an eye. The definitive book of the 20th century is re-examined in this radical new staging exploring surveillance, identity and why Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever. Following a critically acclaimed run in the West End, Headlong bring their five star production to Scotland for the first time. Previous Headlong productions on the Citizens stage include Medea, The Seagull and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “A chilling, ingenious 101 minutes”

Hamlet’s father is unexpectedly dead. Returning home from university, he is shocked to discover that the funeral wake has rapidly turned into a celebration of his mother’s remarriage to the dead man’s brother. Then one night, a visit from beyond the grave confirms Hamlet’s worst fears and sets him on a bloody path to madness, murder and revenge. Brian Ferguson takes on the title role of the troubled Hamlet. Roberta Taylor – well known for her lead roles in The Bill and EastEnders and a regular performer at the Citizens during the 1980s – joins forces with her husband and stage and screen actor Peter Guinness to play Gertrude and Claudius. Dominic Hill directs Shakespeare’s brutal and gripping tragedy.

Andrew McPherson has many legitimate business interests: a security firm, taxis, a couple of Renfrewshire bus routes, several pubs and even a secret shareholding in Rangers. Johnny “the bastard” Glendenning is the self-styled Tony Blair of Ulster loyalist gunmen. In a farmhouse far out in the wilds of Ayrshire they are on a collision course that only one of them can survive. Kill Johnny Glendenning is a murderous comedy of the Glasgow underworld taking aim at the tabloid celebrity and macho glamour of the gangster life. Recently writing for Channel 4’s Fresh Meat, Scottish playwright DC Jackson’s previous work for theatre includes My Romantic History (Scotsman Fringe First Award 2010), and the trilogy of The Wall, The Ducky and The Chooky Brae.

A night of riotous comedy as three hapless but frightfully nice actors in evening dress gather in a 1940s BBC drama studio and attempt to recreate the hilarious story of the valiant people of the Island of Todday using their skills, wit, ingenuity, 100 unlikely sound effects – and one very overworked and exasperated studio manager! It’s WW2 and due to rationing, there is not a drop of whisky to be had. Then the SS Cabinet Minister runs aground and the crew has to abandon the cargo – 50,000 cases of the best quality export whisky! “ Brilliant… played with terrific enjoyment and confidence” Scotsman “ A hugely appealing hit… deftly judged… popular entertainment of real subtlety and style” Daily Telegraph

Ebenezer Scrooge is a notoriously bitter old man who is determined not to let Christmas interfere with his miserly routine. A feared figure throughout the streets of London, he is unmoved by any pleas for charity. But one Christmas Eve, Scrooge receives some unexpected supernatural visitors who are determined to show him the true spirit of Christmas and the error of his ways. This bold, theatrical adaptation captures the original heart of Charles Dickens’ beloved tale. Directed by Dominic Hill, Christmas at the Citizens offers a magical, inventive, heartwarming and spine-tingling production of a festive classic. Guaranteed to appeal to young and old alike, A Christmas Carol will melt even the coldest of hearts and leave all rejoicing in the Christmas spirit! Praise for previous Christmas productions: “ an impressively stylish and wonderfully engaging piece of seasonal theatre” Daily Telegraph “An innovative family show that dares to be different” The Times

Stewart Laing, who directed The Maids last year on the Citizens' main stage, returns with a new production of Pamela Carter’s play Slope, reconceived for an intimate studio setting. Originally produced by Untitled Projects in 2006, Slope explores the love affair between the 19th century poets, Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud and its impact on Verlaine’s young wife Mathilde. Their verbal sparring is scabrous and hilarious, and their rollercoaster relationships as passionate and claustrophobic as they are cruel and ridiculous. “ … the three of them enact a cruel battle for status, order dueling with chaos, decorum with sensual pleasure” The Guardian on Slope (2006)

A special award from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to celebrate their 25th anniversary has allowed us to expand our participatory work on an even bigger scale over the next five years – to engage groups who have never attended the theatre before and to reach those with more barriers than most to taking part in the arts.
DEAF THEATRE CLUB On these special nights, held five times a year, we extend a warm welcome to deaf and hard of hearing audiences. We offer a BSL interpreted performance, BSL signed pre-show talk, discounted tickets and extra assistance for ticket pick-up and ordering at the bar. See p24 for more info.
JUST GO The first experience of theatre, for many, is with a school group and it can spark a life-long love of the arts. Entire year groups of 16-18 year olds from two Glasgow secondary schools will visit the Citizens six times over two years and be supported to attend on their own when they leave school.
GORBALS CARD A long-standing discount ticket scheme for local residents, now Gorbals Cardholders can see any show, any night of the week for just ÂŁ2! No small print or catches. See p37 for more info.
PAUL HAMLYN THEATRE CLUB Local community groups working with homeless people, those recovering from addiction, asylum-seekers and ex-offenders (amongst many others) are offered free tickets and supported to attend main stage shows throughout the year.
FOLLOW THE FAMILY We welcome over 200 new families who will move into the Laurieston housing development directly opposite the theatre in the summer of 2014. We will work intensively with a number of families who will be invited to attend shows, classes and workshops during their first year of living in the Gorbals community.
All of this work has been made possible thanks to funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
