Welcome to our neW season The Citizens Theatre is a dynamic cultural hub, making exceptional work for adults and young people, offering pioneering community projects, developing unique partnerships and touring nationally and internationally.

We believe we’re creating something special at the Citizens and this season we’ve put together a programme of work that reflects our unique place in Glasgow and the extraordinary range of work we do.

Productions here include the world premiere of Backbeat, a co-production with london West end producer karl Sydow about the early years of The Beatles; My Name is Rachel Corrie, a powerful, award-winning play about a young American protester whose life was tragically ended in Palestine; a major new collaboration with the royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama on Chekhov’s Three Sisters; our third main stage Community Company production in four years with a cast of over 30, The Grapes of Wrath; and a brilliant world premiere about contemporary British life overheard in ordinary conversations, One Million Tiny Plays About Britain. TAG also go out on the road this spring with Meep & Moop, a new show for 3-5 years olds, touring to nurseries across Scotland.

We also welcome visiting shows from across the Uk including the British premiere of The Furies by the radical playwright neil la Bute as part of a trilogy celebration, edinburgh Festival hits The Event and Morecambe, a week

of top headline acts from the Glasgow International Comedy Festival and an easter week of family fun from Wee Stories with Treasure Island. in the last year we’ve won a number of awards for our work: The Stage’s Best Actor Award for Billy Mack and The herald ‘little Devil’ Award for Michele Gallagher, both for The Sound of My Voice at the edinburgh Festival; a CATS Award for Best Production for Children and young People for liar and an Arts & Business Award for our new partnership with the St enoch Centre on The Wizard of oz. We’ve also received many nominations in the past year, including two from the prestigious TMA Awards; Museum of Dreams for Best Show for Children and young People and David leddy for Best Director for Sub rosa. recently we’ve also been working with a multitude of project partners including the national library of Scotland, Sense over Sectarianism, Turning Point Scotland, rape Crisis Scotland, inglefield hostel, north lanarkshire Council, Arts and Theatres Trust Fife, Bridging the Gap and CreATe, amongst many others where we provide opportunities for people’s artistic and personal development.

Scotland’s conservatoire for drama training and one of its most iconic theatre companies have come together to establish a new and ambitious long-term collaboration to provide vocational education and training. As ‘professionals in training’, Springboards will provide a secure progression route as final year students move from full time education into the world of work. Over 40 students will collaborate with professional directors, designers, actors, stage managers and technicians to create two productions.

i am a Gorbals girl born and bred. i have been coming to this theatre since the days of the Variety Theatre before it even became the Citizens. you’ll never beat live theatre, it takes you away from your own life for a couple of hours.

This place is so important, providing entertainment not just for the lucky Gorbals residents who have it on their doorstep but for all the people of Glasgow.

i’ve been coming to drama classes for about a year now and it’s a really great place. When i walked through the doors i didn’t know anyone but now i’ve made quite a few friends through it. We cover a lot of stuff and it is something new each week. i like that it isn’t too structured. We are given a lot of freedom. We are often given a simple stimulus and are allowed to branch off and go nuts with it!
