PINTER SHAKESPEARE BECKETT

SPRING 2012

DOMINIC HILL PRESENTS HIS INAUGURAL SEASON “it feels like coming home to the place where I started out… a very special theatre both in Glasgow and in the world.” David Hayman In addition, we re-unite the young cast of Divided City whose take on Theresa Breslin’s novel received standing ovations earlier this year; and Scottish Opera collaborate with us once again staging Temptations of Tam with our Community Company. To ensure that everyone can access great drama at the Citizens Theatre we are introducing some rock bottom ticket offers including tickets at just 50p (see more details opposite). I have chosen plays by three of the greatest and most revolutionary playwrights in the English language to kick off my time as Artistic Director. For me, Pinter’s beautifully raw Betrayal, Shakespeare’s greatest play King Lear and a double bill of Beckett’s haunting miniature plays Krapp’s Last Tape and Footfalls are some of the most powerful and inspiring works ever written. Some familiar faces will return to the theatre where they made their careers, including David Hayman as King Lear and Cal Macaninch as Robert in Betrayal. I have also invited some of the best touring theatre companies to be part of our Spring Season. Frantic Assembly and Vox Motus make their Citizens debut while the National Theatre of Scotland return with Abi Morgan’s fascinating play 27.

02 | 03

Over the past few months I have been struck by the warmth and loyalty that this theatre generates across Glasgow. This is partly of course because it has been a landmark in the city for 135 years. But the age of the theatre also brings its own challenges which is why we’re launching our Seat Restoration Fund. Find out more inside this brochure or on our website about how you can help us reach our £250,000 target by 2013. Finally, if you have visited us recently I thank you wholeheartedly for your support and hope you are excited about the new season ahead. If you haven’t been for a while, I urge you to take advantage of one of our ticket offers and take a chance on seeing world-class drama in one of Scotland’s most iconic theatres. Emma is caught in a love triangle between her husband Robert and her lover Jerry – who is also her husband’s best friend. But who is betraying who? Shakespeare’s greatest play is a profound exploration of the human condition. The ageing King decides to step down from the throne and divide his estate between his three children. Deceived by false promises and rejecting his one faithful daughter, Lear’s former kingdom spirals into chaos as he is driven to madness by the cruel treatment of his own family. Celebrated film, TV and stage actor David Hayman returns to the Citizens in the title role, 30 years after his last appearance. DAVID HAYMAN David started his career at the Citizens with many seminal performances including Hamlet in 1975 and Lady Macbeth in 1979. Well-known as DCS Walker from ITV’s Trial And Retribution, he has been a familiar face on screen for over 30 years including film appearances with Pierce Brosnan, Bruce Willis and Kevin Spacey. He famously played the part of former Glasgow gangster and Barlinnie convict Jimmy Boyle in the film, A Sense of Freedom.

A double bill of Beckett’s most haunting miniature plays.

Directed by Dominic Hill

An old man sits alone on his 69th birthday, looking back on his life, recorded ritualistically on tape. A woman paces tirelessly back and forth in conversation with her critically ill mother. Humorous and moving studies of isolation and loneliness, these two one-act plays are spine-tingling masterpieces.

National Theatre of Scotland co-production with Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh

27 By Abi Morgan

Dr Richard Garfield has given Ursula a difficult choice. She is the mother superior in-waiting of a convent that has been given the opportunity to take part in his revolutionary scientific study. Ursula must weigh up the value of preserving her faith versus embracing science as her cloistered existence is rocked to its core. Abi Morgan’s new play is an extraordinary examination of a lifestyle in decline, but one whose dignity and faith could hold the key to the issues of our times – our ageing population and the decline of our minds. A human play about loneliness, ageing, science and loss.
