Ciara's father Mick kept her as his hidden treasure, making sure his only daughter was shielded from what he did and the men and women with whom he associated. Now Mick is dead and his legacy, so bound up in the landscape of Glasgow, that infamous no mean city, must be faced. As Ciara seeks to further the reputation of her art gallery, her world starts to fragment. Marked by the deep contradictions of her father, the art world and the city that made them all, Ciara stands on a threshold. By facing the past, her future blows wide open. A spellbinding play by acclaimed playwright David Harrower, this solo play performed by stage and screen favourite Blythe Duff was a hit show at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and winner of a Herald Angel and Fringe First Award.

TWELFTH NIGHT BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Experience the madness of love in this heady world where riotous gig meets Shakespeare.

Olivia’s melancholic, puritanical household clashes head on with Sir Toby’s insatiable appetite for drunken debauchery. Orsino’s relentless pursuit of Olivia and Malvolio’s extraordinary transformation typify the madness of love in Illyria, a land of make-believe and illusion. Explosive, funny and fast-paced, this 90-minute joyous celebration of romance, satire and mistaken identity is crafted into one of the most exciting and accessible productions of Shakespeare’s much-loved comedy by Filter, one of the most dynamic young theatre companies touring the UK. “The most hardhearted purists would melt at Filter’s 90-minute reworking… For newcomers to Shakespeare, I can’t think of a better introduction” Sunday Times “Puts the fun back into Twelfth Night and allows us to become participants in a feast of misrule.” The Guardian

Inspired by events in the war-torn Balkans, this Macbeth presents a contemporary world of camouflage-clad leaders where power is all, but it comes at a price. Macbeth has heard a prophecy, given to him by three hags, that he will become King. His wife, spurred by ambition, persuades him to seize his opportunity and kill Duncan, who currently sits on the throne. Murder follows murder, and soon Macbeth has the blood of two men on his hands. Unsettling and full of tension, this operatic production underlines the drama of Shakespeare’s play and the brilliance of Verdi’s score, made all the more immediate in this intimate setting performed by chamber orchestra. Sung in English. With players from The Orchestra of Scottish Opera.

“You are the centre of your little world and I am of mine. Now and again we meet for tea, we're two of a kind. This is our universe, cups of tea. We have a beautiful cosmos, you and me.” Ivor Cutler A Jewish, Scottish Londoner, born and bred in Glasgow, Ivor Cutler was a wholehearted eccentric. He stood alone as the only artist to have been played on Radios 1, 2, 3 and 4, championed by John Peel, signed by all the major record labels and influenced The Beatles. The Beautiful Cosmos of Ivor Cutler weaves together the music, prose, poetry and biography of this remarkable figure to tell the story of his life. Whether you are already a fan or curious to explore Cutler’s music and life story for the first time, The Beautiful Cosmos celebrates the work of a unique Scottish artist in a production by the ever inventive Vanishing Point in collaboration with the National Theatre of Scotland.

London in the 1670s - Charles II is on the throne, Nell Gwynn is in his bed, and the theatre and sexual promiscuity are flourishing. The Libertine is the true story of John Wilmot, the Second Earl of Rochester – a hedonistic poet, playwright and rake whose appetite for women and wine has made him a notorious figure. He is a man who does not feel alive unless he exceeds every limit. He’s not easy to like, much less love. Yet this most charismatic of sinners is forced to reconsider everything he thinks and feels when a chance encounter at the Playhouse sends him reeling. You may not like the Second Earl of Rochester. But you will not be able to take your eyes off him. With all the wit, flair and bawdiness of a Restoration comedy, this brilliant play is both historical romp and incisive critique of an age of excess. Made famous through the film of the same name starring Johnny Depp and John Malkovich, this is the first major stage production in the UK since its London premiere. Recommended for 16+

GERARD MURPHY IN KRAPP’S LAST TAPE MAY 2012
GERARD MURPHY CITIZEN OF THIS THEATRE, 1974-2013
In tribute to the great actor, Gerard Murphy, friends and family bought two Seat Dedications, marking his tremendous contribution to theatre and supporting our Seat Restoration Fund. Here are their words: Gerard spent the happiest years of his theatrical life on the stage of the Citizens Theatre having been a stalwart of the company during the reign of Giles Havergal, Robert David MacDonald and Philip Prowse. When he returned in 2012 to give his astounding performance in Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape, which was sadly to be his last stage appearance, he told The Herald that “coming back here, it feels like coming home.” He joined the company in 1974 to play Coriolanus and the next three years saw memorable performances ranging from the eponymous Chinchilla and Woyzeck to Ms Prism in The Importance of Being Earnest and the Duke in De Sade Show. He also ‘for one matinee only’ gave a never-to-beforgotten performance as a ‘Trembling Tree’ in Jack and the Beanstalk.

In 1979 he played the title role in a highly acclaimed all male version of Macbeth. In this year also, his beloved Chinchilla was revived and Gerard magnificently voiced the ethos of the Citizens Theatre and Gerard himself in Diaghilev’s words ‘passion for reform, passion for power, passion for beauty, a thirst to show, a lust to tell, a rage to love’. Gerard’s seat was bought by Deirdre Murphy, Frances Tomelty, Wendy Hutton, Anne Henderson, Lynda Ronan, Eoin O’Callaghan, Roma Tomelty, Nikolai Foster, Karin Grainger, John McAndrew, Joe Sumner and Fushcia Sumner.
