“Whence is that knocking? How is it with me, when every noise appalls me?” A demarcated area on stage. Three Weird Sisters operate a strange collection of electronic musical apparatus. Macbeth is invited in to play. Filter's radical version of Macbeth is playful, kaleidoscopic and horrific. Shakespeare’s corrosive, psychological thriller of ambition, power, witchcraft and sanity with innovative sound and music to create a strange, funny and scintillating journey to the epicentre of the “heat-oppressed brain”. One of the most dynamic theatre companies touring the UK, Filter return to the Citizens Theatre with another entirely fresh approach to Shakespeare following their irreverent and contemporary recreation of Twelfth Night. “For newcomers to Shakespeare, I can’t think of a better introduction…it’s a celebration: mad, wild, loving and hilarious.” Sunday Times on Twelfth Night

In the technicolour confines of the slab room of A. F. Stobo & Co. Carpet Factory in Paisley, young boys have to grow up fast. Strutting adolescent double act Phil and Spanky are passing the time with an endless verbal tug o’ war and merciless ribbing of their workmates and boss. But even the distractions of the annual staff dance, the monthly pay packet or the unattainable Lucille can’t stop Phil from dreaming of becoming an artist. One of the best-loved works in twentieth-century Scottish theatre, the original creators—writer and designer John Byrne and director David Hayman— revive this funny and poignant play which paints a vivid picture of the tough, rebellious, workingclass culture of 1950s industrial Scotland. David Hayman will also appear on stage in the role of the boys’ gaffer, Willie Currie. John Byrne and David Hayman in conversation 19 Feb 5.45pm A unique opportunity to hear from the original creators of The Slab Boys and two major figures of Scotland's cultural life. SS-Obersturmführer Franz Stangl oversaw the deaths of nearly 1 million people in Nazi extermination camps. Long Live the Little Knife is a dynamic, absurd and uplifting theatre piece about forgery, castration and blind drunkenness. Liz and Jim are small-time con-artists who need 250 grand to buy their way out of a turf war. Their mission is to be the greatest art forgers in the world. There’s only one problem. They can’t paint. Written and directed by “theatrical maverick” (Sunday Times) and “site-specific genius” (The Scotsman), David Leddy. Originally developed with support from the Royal Shakespeare Company and performed at the British Museum, in this fastpaced, provocative and boisterous caper Leddy finds the incongruous connections between verbatim theatre, free-market economics, the psychology of ‘truth’ and a castrated labradoodle in a classic Chanel clutch bag. “Dazzling… Wild… Hugely enjoyable” The Guardian “Fantastic… Brilliant… Coup de théâtre” The Scotsman “Perceptive… Penetrating… What a story” The Herald

The Citizens has been at the heart of the Gorbals community for 70 years. We are embarking on a major ÂŁ16.5m redevelopment of our iconic and much loved theatre that will ensure the Citizens continues to serve our audiences, community and participants into the future.
While we still have the final ÂŁ5m to raise, work is expected to commence in Autumn 2016. When completed, the new building will provide better facilities for everyone who uses the theatre. These will include universal access throughout the building, a new cafe bar, better temperature control in the auditorium along with new spaces for learning and community activities. The redevelopment will also make the building's unique heritage more visible to all who visit. Look out for more updates on our plans, and information on how you will be able to contribute to our success throughout the year at www.citz.co.uk/support_us

The Citizens Theatre’s extensive learning programme connects the widest possible range of people with our work on stage, and with each other. THE CHARA PROJECT 85 vulnerable women experiencing complex needs and homelessness have so far taken part in creative writing, drama, singing, art, craft, and design workshops at the Chara respite centre in Possilpark, building their self-esteem, creative skills and helping them to prepare for their reintegration into the community. This new piece, Southside Stories, will draw on interviews with young adults in Govanhill, the setting for Douglas' play – a diverse and dynamic part of the city.
