We think that theatre and the arts have an essential role to play in bringing about positive social change and we believe in placing creativity at the heart of learning. Every week of the year our experienced Citizens Learning team provides a range of opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds in Glasgow and beyond to get involved in the creative life of our Theatre and develop skills and selfconfidence in an inclusive environment where new friendships can flourish. We are passionate about everything we offer to children, young people, students, older people and to families. We work closely with people with additional support needs, with people in prison, in marginalised groups and disadvantaged communities.

We are always keen to build new projects, work with new partners and develop new ideas and there are many ways in which individuals and organisations can help us to continue and expand what we do. We warmly invite you to take part in the creative life of the Citizens Theatre. GUY HOLLANDS Associate Director (Citizens Learning) 0141 418 6276 | guy@citz.co.uk CONNECT WITH US

Everyone is welcome to take part in our projects, classes and productions, including people from minority ethnic backgrounds, those seeking asylum or refuge, those out of work or striving to recover from drug and alcohol dependency.

COMMUNITIES We believe learning is for life and that everyone can enjoy being part of the creative process. We want people to find their own voice and forge a genuine and lasting connection with other participants and with our Theatre’s work. We work with people from a range of communities in Glasgow and further afield to create theatre productions and multi-artform projects. We place special emphasis on working with marginalised groups and socially-excluded adults.

‘The Citizens community productions are vital to my everyday existence, they give me purpose. There is truly open access to everyone. That kind of equality doesn’t exist everywhere, but it is insisted upon here.’ Community Participant

Over the last decade the Citizens Community Company has brought together people from all walks of life who are living, learning or working in Glasgow to create performance projects and productions with full professional support.

EDUCATION We celebrate the vitality of young people and believe that drama provides a safe space in which to explore, share experiences and rehearse for life. Providing children and young people with new experiences, skills, opportunities and insights is central to our ethos. We challenge participants to think independently and encourage them to work collaboratively in an environment where they feel connected and yet can celebrate their individual differences. We create workshops, projects, professional development training for teachers and resources aligned with the Curriculum for Excellence for nursery, primary schools, secondary schools and further education institutions.

‘The workshop was not only beneficial for the children but an excellent tool for teachers too. The children took on board the moral of the story and were able to find the confidence to express their emotions. It was an excellent session, superbly led.’ Bookbug Project in partnership with Scottish Ballet and Scottish Book Trust

CLASSES Throughout the year we run a range of popular drama classes to suit all ages. Weekly Drama Classes for children and teenagers from 4-18 years run every weekend during school term time. There are 18 different classes to choose from with over 280 children making new friends and learning new skills from experienced tutors. Nightschool adult drama classes are a fun and informal introduction to acting. We offer four different levels to suit all abilities from complete beginner to the more experienced performer.

‘Fantastic experience and a welcoming environment. Meeting a group of strangers and within a short time seeing skills develop and being comfortable to perform in front of each other. Great fun.’ Nightschool Participant

Off The Page are informal and sociable play-reading sessions for those that are young at heart and mature in years.
