His first published works were poems and literary essays. By the outbreak of the Second World War, Beckett had written two novels (the first of which would not be published until after his death). During the war, he worked as a courier in the French resistance and narrowly evaded capture by the Gestapo (exploits he later described as “boy-scout stuff”). In 1949, Beckett wrote En attendant Godot, which he translated and published in English as Waiting for Godot in 1954. The play brought Beckett international renown and cemented his place as a leading figure in the Theatre of the Absurd movement. Endgame was first performed in French in 1957. The English title reflects Beckett’s enduring passion for chess. In 1969, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
