THE CAST GEORGE COSTIGAN  |  JAMES TYRONE This is George’s fifth appearance with the Citizens Theatre, previously appearing in Oresteia: This Restless House in 2017 and 2016, Crime and Punishment in 2013 and King Lear in 2011. Other stage roles in Scotland include George in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men (King’s Theatre Edinburgh); Trust Byron at the 1998 Edinburgh Festival Fringe (nominated for Best Actor); Claudius in Calixto Bietio’s production of Hamlet at the 2003 Edinburgh International Festival and David Harrower’s Blackbird at the Tron in 2011. Film credits include: The Hawk directed by David Hayman, and Summer directed by Kenny Glenaan. George has published the first novel of a trilogy, The Single Soldier and the second and third parts, The Soldier’s Home, will be published in May. He also once compered three nights of freestyle wrestling in Aberdeen. Never again.

DANI HERON  | CATHLEEN Dani trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. LORN MACDONALD  |  EDMUND TYRONE Lorn graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2015. Theatre credits include: Trainspotting (2017 and 2016 Citizens Theatre); Oresteia: This Restless House (2017 and 2016 Citizens Theatre/National Theatre of Scotland); Boys (Soho Theatre/Nuffield Theatre/Headlong/Hightide Festival Theatre); What We Know (Traverse Theatre). CREATIVE TEAM DOMINIC HILL  | DIRECTOR Dominic Hill is Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre. Since joining the Citizens in 2011, he has directed Cinderella, The Macbeths, Oresteia: This Restless House (2017 and 2016, winner of Best Director, 2016 CATS Awards), Hay Fever, Hansel & Gretel, The Rivals, Endgame, The Choir, Fever Dream: Southside, A Christmas Carol, Hamlet, The Libertine, Miss Julie, Crime and Punishment (winner of Best Director and Best Production, 2014 CATS Awards), Far Away, Seagulls, Doctor Faustus, Sleeping Beauty, Krapp’s Last Tape, Footfalls, King Lear and Betrayal (winner of Best Director, 2012 CATS Award). Before joining the Citizens he was Artistic Director of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and Joint Artistic Director of Dundee Rep. Other credits include Falstaff and Macbeth (Scottish Opera) and The City Madam (Royal Shakespeare Company). He has directed in theatres in London and throughout the UK.

TOM PIPER  | DESIGNER Recent designs include: Hay Fever, King Lear, Hamlet, The Libertine (Citizens Theatre); The Great Wave (National Theatre); The Cherry Orchard (Bristol Old Vic/Royal Exchange); Rhinoceros (Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh); Endgame (Citizens Theatre/HOME Manchester); iHo (Hampstead Theatre); Harrogate (HighTide/Royal Court); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Royal Shakespeare Company & UK Tour); Carmen La Cubana (Le Théâtre du Châtelet); Red Velvet (West End, TricycleTheatre & New York); A Wolf In Snakeskin Shoes (TricycleTheatre); The King’s Speech (Birmingham Rep/Chichester Festival Theatre & UK Tour); Orfeo (Royal Opera House); Tamburlaine The Great (Theatre For a New Audience, New York). As Associate Designer of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Tom designed over 30 of their shows including The Histories for which he won an Olivier for best costume design. Tom designed Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London and received an MBE for services to Theatre and First World War commemorations. Other recent exhibitions include: Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic (V&A); Shakespeare Staging The World (British Museum).

BEN ORMEROD  |  LIGHTING DESIGNER Previous productions at the Citizens Theatre include Oresteia: This Restless House, King Lear and Hamlet. Recent work includes: Broken Glass (Watford Palace Theatre); The Knot (Umanoove Dance); Frame of View (Danish Dance Theatre); All’s Well that Ends Well (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse); A Woman of No Importance (West End); Woyzeck in Winter (Landmark Productions/Galway International Arts); Prism (Hampstead Theatre); The Libertine (West End/Theatre Royal Bath); Tannhäuser (Longborough Festival Opera); A Number (Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh). Previous theatre includes: Mrs Henderson Presents (West End/ Toronto/Theatre Royal Bath); Zorro (West End, US, Japan and Netherlands); the Spanish Golden Age season (Royal Shakespeare Company). Ben has also lit numerous opera and dance productions including for Scottish Opera, English National Opera, Rambert, Phoenix Dance, National Dance Company Wales, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Danish National Opera, Lithuania National Ballet and Ballet Gulbenkian. He is lighting consultant for the Calico Museum of Textiles, Ahmedabad, directed Athol Fugard’s Dimetos (Gate Theatre, London) and adapted four films from Kieślowski’s Dekalog for E15.

CLAIRE MCKENZIE  | COMPOSER Claire McKenzie trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and now works as a Composer and Musical Director in the UK and internationally. Theatre credits include: Hay Fever, Hansel and Gretel, After the End, Divided City, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella (Citizens Theatre); Atlantic: A Scottish Story (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland/Noisemaker/Assembly - Winner of Herald Angel Award 2017); The Caucasian Chalk Circle (Winner Best Production CATS 2015), The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Iliad, Hedda Gabler, The Venetian Twins, The BFG (Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh); The 306:Day, Roman Bridge (National Theatre of Scotland); Little Red and the Wolf (Dundee Rep/Noisemaker - nominated for UK Theatre Award and CATS award for Best Production for Children and Young People); Forest Boy (New York Musical Festival); What We Wished For (Sheffield Crucible); The Girl Who (Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, New York); A Christmas Carol, Hecuba, Mill Lavvies (Dundee Rep); My First Spellbook (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland - Nominated for a BAFTA New Talent Award for Original Music). Along with writer Scott Gilmour, Claire co-founded the award-winning music theatre company, Noisemaker. Claire and Scott were named one of the New Voices of 2016 by NMI and Walt Disney Imagineering. Claire is currently an associate artist for Dundee Rep Theatre.


MATT PADDEN  |  SOUND DESIGNER Matt was the National Theatre of Scotland’s Head of Sound between 2008 and 2017. His designs for that company include Eve, How To Act, Last Tango in Partick, Last Dream (On Earth) (presented by Kai Fischer), The Tin Forest, A Christmas Carol, Long Gone Lonesome, Wall of Death - A Way of Life and, as Technical Sound Designer, Enquirer. Other sound designs include The Hidden (Visible Fictions); What Put The Blood (Abbey Theatre, Dublin); Cockpit (Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh); Heroine (MJW Productions); Expensive Sh*t (Scottish Theatre Producers); Shrapnel (Theatre Gu Leòr); Andromaque (Òran Mór); Entartet (Kai Fischer); Subway (Vanishing Point); Woyzeck (Corcadorca Theatre Company). Long Day’s Journey Into Night is his first design for the Citizens Theatre.

GEORGE NICHOLS  |  ASSISTANT DIRECTOR George is currently on placement at the Citizens Theatre as part of his MFA in Theatre Directing at Birkbeck University. He is a drama graduate from the University of Bristol. Assistant Directing credits include: Trainspotting (Citizens Theatre); Faithful Ruslan: The Story of a Guard Dog (Citizens Theatre/Belgrade Theatre Coventry); One More Sleep ‘til Christmas (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland); Eventide (Arcola Theatre/ Up in Arms). Directing credits include: Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons, Lemons (Citizens Theatre); Oddity (Edinburgh Festival Fringe/Chapter Arts Centre); The Allotment (Alma Theatre, Bristol); Entertaining Mr Sloane, Zoo Story (University of Bristol). George is one of the founding directors of the Cardiff Fringe Festival, which offers a platform for the arts at a local, national and international level.
