USING DRAMA TO EXPLORE MONEY MANAGEMENT

SMALL CHANGE Originally created in partnership with LTS, TAG’s 4 workshop package can be used in tandem with the Small Change DVD & pack available soon from LTS.

This drama project, delivered to fit into the PSE and Guidance Guidance curriculum, explores the practical and emotional consequences of managing and mismanaging money. money Taking place over four sessions, we explore financial issues in a way that is directly relevant to the lives of young people. Focusing on one fictional family, students get to experience the characters’ situations and explore their choices and options

“I have really enjoyed being part of this project. It embraces everything that Curriculum for Excellence hopes to achieve. The pupils enjoyed the experience immensely and gained a practical hands-on approach into the pitfalls of money management”. Karen Borland PT Drama at Bannerman High

Session one introduces Toni the daughter, who constantly borrows from her best pal, Sam. We look at the emotional aspects of money and not having it, the pressures it puts on a friendship and what happens when we lie about money. Session Two is all about Ryan the son and his campaign for an electric guitar. His parents are in debt but feel guilt. What are Ryan’s tactics? Whose point of view do we sympathise with? How do financial pressures impact on the family dynamic? The session explores why we want things we can’t afford and the role advertising plays. Session Three begins with a monologue from the father Stevie, who has lost his job, lied to his wife about the amount of their debt, consolidated his loans incurring enormous interest and got to a point where he is being taken to court. What happens when his wife finds out? Whose fault is this situation and what choices are there for the family now? Session Four sees Shannon the wife winning a supermarket sweepstake. The family has been living on the breadline having got rid of everything they had on credit – now they can pay off all their debts, pay off some debts and still have some left to celebrate with or blow the lot. Comparing a wish list and a list of money owed, the family has to work out what to do for the best. Suitable for S1S1-S5.
