TRAINSPOTTING BY IRVINE WELSH ADAPTED BY HARRY GIBSON Irvine Welsh’s novel Trainspotting was published by Secker & Warburg (now Harvill Secker) in 1993. Nine months later, Harry Gibson had adapted the novel for the Citizens Theatre’s Stalls Studio starring Ewen Bremner, who went on to play ‘Spud’ in Danny Boyle’s film version. The adaptation was a huge success and was remounted the following year at the Citizens before going on to tour the globe. Its explicit content and shocking violence made it a commonlycited prime example of ’in-yer-face theatre’, a term used to categorise the work of young writers in the 1990s including Sarah Kane, Philip Ridley and Jez Butterworth. Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting found global notoriety through Danny Boyle’s 1996 film starring Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Kelly Macdonald, Kevin McKidd and Johnny Lee Miller. Welsh’s sequel to Trainspotting, Porno, was published in 2012. A film adaptation, again directed by Danny Boyle, was released in 2017 as T2.
