o kick off the China-Australia Year of Tourism 2017, China National Tourist Office proudly hosted the official opening ceremony and concert at one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks, the Sydney Opera House. Over 1,500 domestic and international guests attended the event. As it is the year of tourism between both countries, we celebrate the beauty and modern masterpieces each has to offer. In Shanghai we look at the avant-garde buildings that have quickly become synonymous with the city skyline (pages 52-61). As another year wraps up, we round up the best of what Beijing has to offer – food, hotel rooms, chefs and more (pages 74-81). We hope you join us in celebrating this significant year for tourism between both China and Australia. Sureño, the mainstay restaurant at Opposite House, has been the backbone of the boutique hotel for close to a decade. However, it has recently done away with the dishes for which it became known. Don’t get too worried, though – we think it’s even better. Gone are the pizzas and tiramisu, replaced by a stripped-back and more pure Mediterranean menu. New chef Talib Hudda, previously of The Georg, has pushed the ingredients and essential flavours in a more authentic Mediterranean direction. Beijing’s Broadway musical scene is growing each year after the success of recent runs of Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods. In May, a 10-day run of beloved modern musical Wicked will show at one of Beijing’s most respected theatres, Tianqiao Performing Arts Center. Colourful history Each year, in April, Yuyuantan Park becomes a sea of pink and white cherry blossoms consuming the entire space. The 2,000 cherry blossoms are only in full bloom for a week or two, but draw quite the crowd. After first launching in 1996, the Shanghai Biennale has continued to grow into the most influential Biennale in Asia. Housed inside the Power Station of Art, one of Shanghai’s largest gallery spaces, the 11th Shanghai Biennale changes its theme every two years to help attract and celebrate both local and international talent. This year, the phrase “Why not ask again” has allowed artists to twist and manoeuvre this query to explore their connection between urban life, contemporary art and the public. Parisian paradise

The Chapterhouse Theatre Company has made a point of bringing its plays to the international stage in recent years, and now it’s Shanghai’s turn. For three nights only from March 24-26, Emily Bronte’s classic Wuthering Heights will be on show at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. This adaptation from writer Laura Turner tells the story of love and separation against a Gothic English backdrop. It’s a story already well-loved, and now you can fall in love all over again. Named after the Fujian provincial bird, Bailuzhou Park directly translates to “egret island park”. Land and water areas are connected by winding bridges – in total, there are 13 bridges in the park, built in different sizes and shapes.

7 Xiamen University The campus at Xiamen University looks more like an island resort than a university. Even if you don’t attend the school, the beautiful grounds make it worth the visit.

It is a combination of 100% all-natural Angus beef, melted American cheese, tomato, Japanese pickles, onion, lettuce and Gojima special sauce," he says. First produced in 1963, it’s a tightly structured white with a breadth of citrus flavours. Tyrrell’s Wines manages over 500 acres of vineyards in the Hunter alone, with the original slab hut built in 1858 – complete with rusted tin roof and 1940s cars parked out front – still standing and acting as the cellar door. Barossa Valley, SA According to famed Australian wine critic James Halliday, Seppeltsfield is “The most historic winery and greatest showpiece of the Barossa Valley.” Some 420 acres of vineyard stretch along the Western Ridge of the valley, producing some of the region’s most well-known vintages. Surrounded by a small settlement, Seppeltsfield is a haven of manicured gardens, out-of-place palm trees and heritage buildings acting as the cellar door and restaurant. Headed by Dominique himself, a ninth-generation winemaker, Dominique Portet was established in 2000 after he decided the Yarra Valley had the most similar conditions to his native Bordeaux. Dominique aimed to bring his French roots – dating back to the early 1700s – to Australia, to create wine in an environment where he could respect tradition. With an open mind to contemporary practices, Dominique Portet aims to combine the old-world and new-world style of wine. Not always serving as a hotel – in the 1920s it was the headquarters for the Herald; in the 40s offices for Verona Press; and in the 70s and 80s it was Lindrum’s Billiard Centre, set up by the Lindrum family, which produced four generations of billiards champions and snooker players. But it wasn’t until 1999 that it came to be what it is today. The exterior still maintains its early 1900s facade, but the interiors of rich wood furnishings combined with classic polished floors and heavy woven carpets create an updated old-school feel. Its signature restaurant, Felt (named after the felt on a billiard table) serves seasonal Modern Australian fare, as well as high tea on weekends in the early afternoon. hanghai loves to break a world record with each new mega structure in its ever-expanding skyline. Nothing new, it seems, can rise in the city without being some sort of ground-breaking technical and engineering masterpiece. It’s a testament to what this modern city is capable of. But, in Shanghai’s financial district by the Bund, four buildings in particular burst above all the rest each, as iconic as the next and all forming a part of the city’s rich legacy.

SHANGHAI TOWER

Currently, the most exciting and ambitious addition to the city skyline is the recently opened Shanghai Tower. Work began on this behemoth back in 2008 and took almost eight years to complete. Measuring 632 metres in height, this 127-storey ‘supertall’ tower twists elegantly above the city, dwarfing the surrounding edifices into toy models by comparison. As China’s new tallest building, completed in 2016, it was bound to smash most world records as well. Unfortunately, it can only lay claim to being the second tallest in the world – the tallest being the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which measures another 192 metres. But when it comes to structures like these, such distinctions can seem almost like splitting hairs; the Shanghai Tower is sure to still impress. >

On the record front, the Shanghai Tower boasts a list as long as it is tall, including the world’s fastest elevators (capable of travelling 64.8kmh), highest restaurant, highest hotel and highest viewing platform at 118 floors. However, the most important record is that it’s the world’s greenest tower and is seen as an example of China’s push forward into a greener future. How do you even make a structure of this size green? With over 200 wind turbines at the top of the structure,that’s how. The turbines power up to 10% of the building, while the outside is designed to collect and re-use rainwater. Additionally, doublelayered glass and a combined heat and cooling system help maintain temperature. Overall, the structure’s multiple energy-saving implementations cut 34,000 metric tonnes from its carbon footprint each year, according to its designers. Designed by American architecture firm Gensler, responsible for some of the world’s most iconic structures – with Chinese architect Jun Xia leading the charge – the building is estimated to have cost over US$1.6 billion. Designed with a twisting form to encapsulate a dragon emerging from the earth, its flourishing form actually helps with dissipating and catching wind. Inside, nine separate areas have been designed for atriums, gardens, restaurants, retail spaces and office buildings. There’s plenty of space to go around, but as of yet, most of the inside is still empty and unfinished. Tickets for entry are RMB 180, where you’ll be treated to a speedy ride to the viewing deck, an open, modern space with tilting support beams the width of your arm span allowing plenty of room to take in the sprawling miniature city below.

JIN MAO TOWER

Next on the list of Shanghai’s supertall skyscrapers is Jin Mao Tower, its third tallest building. However, being just the third tallest shouldn’t put you off: with 88 storeys and 420 metres, that’s certainly no mean feat. From 1999 to 2007, Jin Mao Tower was in fact the tallest building in China before being knocked off its perch in 2008. While still impressive in its own right, the structure shows how far architectural design and engineering have come over the last decade. Where the Shanghai Tower gleams and twists gracefully, Jin Mao Tower takes a more rigid, straight, up-and-down approach with sharp, geometric edges in a pagoda style, creating the look of building blocks.

Designed by American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the design mantra was to combine elements of traditional Chinese architecture found in ancient temples and pagodas with a more European Gothic feel – similar to many of the French-inspired structures found on the Bund. Although noticeably older with less glitz and glamour than the Shanghai Tower, travelling up the super-fast elevator (9.1 m/sec) to the 360-degree viewing platform on the 88th floor still gives that same sense of awe as the other buildings, but from a new perspective. Looking down onto the city still gives it a playset feel, while looking up at the taller structures offers a new sense of dizzying scale to what the newer buildings have achieved in the meantime. Jin Mao Tower is most notably home to the Grand Hyatt Regency, a five-star hotel and one of the city’s most luxury stays. As the Grand Hyatt’s flagship property in China, you can expect all the trimmings. Occupying the 53rd floor to the 87th floor, you can also expect some of the best bedroom views in the city, among high-end restaurants and bars such as Club Jin Mao and Cloud 9. SHANGHAI WORLD FINANCIAL CENTER Until 2015, the Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC) took the trophy for tallest building in Shanghai – and China – at 492 metres, before it was toppled by its younger brother, the Shanghai Tower. Its iconic bottle-opener design has solidified it in Shanghainese culture as a nod to the city’s design ingenuity. Currently the ninth-tallest building in the world, the SWFC rounds out the three tallest structures in the city, making them the world’s first adjacent grouping of supertall skyscrapers. Taking a neo-futurism design approach, American architect firm Kohn Pedersen Fox originally planned to kick off the revolutionary structure in 1997, however the Asian financial crisis halted production, allowing the group to further develop designs and overcome controversies. The clean lines and curves leading to the trapezoidal peak helped reduce stress and wind pressure, while the simplistic approach kept costs down and structural integrity up. Similar to the other towers, the SWFC is home to hundreds of shops and offices and originally aimed to become a magnet for the world’s finances. Equipped with top-end financial centres, a luxury hotel (Park Hyatt) and cultural and art exhibitions, the SWFC has been able to establish a firm foothold in Shanghai’s – and the world’s – business culture. The SWFC is the only tower to have three separate viewing platforms, each covering the different levels of the tower’s peak. ORIENTAL PEARL TOWER

The black sheep of Shanghai’s skyline is also its most recognisable. Unlike the other structures, the Oriental Pearl Tower acts as a TV tower in Shanghai, with little to no office or retail space. Enormous columns built deep underground support the concrete spire and pink glass spheres that make up the majority of the structure. At 468 metres, it was the tallest structure in China from 1994 to 2007, and categorised as a AAAAA scenic area in China, it is arguably the most popular tourist destination in Shanghai. Of the major towers in Shanghai, the Oriental Pearl Tower is the only designed by a local architecture firm, the Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. Built to encapsulate Chinese culture and ideals, its image is described by an ancient Chinese verse that translates to “large and small pearls dropping on a plate of jade.” The three main spheres (the “pearls”) act as the major viewing platforms. The main platform, at 263 metres, features a transparent floor for those brave enough to step out into nothingness. Be prepared to see plenty of shaky-legged tourists hobbling back to the safety of the good-old-fashioned concrete floor in the centre. While the tower may not have the office and retail space of its sibling towers, it still has plenty to offer in addition to the spine-chilling transparent floors. At 267 metres, you can dine with a view from Asia’s second highest revolving restaurant. Revolving once every two hours, diners get a chance to experience one of the best restaurant views in the city, with a 350-plus seating capacity. Underground, tucked away in the basement of the tower, is the Shanghai Municipal History Museum, a labyrinth of corridors depicting some of the most important moments in the city’s development through 60

the use of reconstructed city streets, models and relics. As you move through the entanglement of vivid street scenes, you’ll gain an insight into the cultural and political changes and upheavals Shanghai has been through until today. Shanghai’s skyline has been developing for decades remaining at the forefront of architectural achievement. By continually challenging pre-conceived ideals in form and function and taking the right steps in green technologies, it seems Shanghai will continue driving forward into a greener and more sustainable future.

After your arrival you’ll be given a key to a buggy, which will be yours for the duration of your stay. While you can walk around the resort, be warned it is quite hilly, and if you’re staying in a Windward Pavilion, you’re a good 5-10 minutes – depending on your fitness level – from Long Pavilion and Pebble Beach.

UNWIND AND RELAX

Settling in to your room is all too easy. The pavilions are spacious. You’ll have trouble picking your favourite spot to spend a couple of hours of downtime, but whether it’s the bath, bed, living room or pool deck, if you’re staying in a Windward Pavilion you’ll be looking out onto the Whitsunday Islands. When you’ve managed to peel yourself from your room, head to Spa qualia. While you may not be outside among the environs, you’ll still be experiencing local elements. The 40-minute escape begins with a revitalising foot ritual using Rasayan scrub, which the spa therapist says has 80-odd essential minerals. Thanks to the soft rattling of the bamboo shoots and crashing of the ocean, you’ll quickly unwind.

Followed is a zesty, full-body exfoliation and detoxifying clay wrap infused with minerals, oils and herbs to tone and purify. Laying wrapped like bug in a cocoon, a warm Indian hair oil is rubbed through your scalp to relieve any stress in the mind and tension in the neck. You’ll be brought back to reality by the sound of an outdoor rain shower. Completely private, showering under the open sky is a holistic experience. If you thought it ended there, you still have a 40-minute relaxation massage paired with a 30-minute facial to follow. The second day is all about the Whitsundays. Take off with a helicopter ride over the iconic Great Barrier Reef; while swimming the Great Barrier Reef might get you up close to the reef itself, you can’t truly appreciate its enormity and beauty until you see it from the air. Our pilot for the day tells us it’s the world’s largest reef system. “The Great Barrier Reef is made up of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands that all stretch over 2,600 kilometres,” she explains. “It’s so big you can see it from space.” The chopper will also fly you over Heart Reef, a reef shaped like a love heart, just before dropping you on Whitehaven Beach, where a private champagne picnic awaits your arrival. Whitehaven Beach is a seven-kilometre stretch of paradise. Its impeccably white sand is so colourless that when it reflects the sun, it’s almost blinding. “The reason as to why it’s so white is because it is 98% pure white silica,” our pilot explains. “That’s what gives it a luminescent colour.” In stark contrast, the water is various shades of turquoise. Once on the shore, you’ll spend the rest of the afternoon lounging on a day bed, allowing time to slowly tick by. The great thing about the long stretch of beach is that you’re never too close to the next group of people. You can easily find yourself thinking you’re the only ones on the sandy shore. 68

It’s a bit of both in regards to the way it’s brewed like a beer but drunk like a wine.” There are different types and grades of sake, and you’ll try a range of them. You’ll even try Dassai 23 Junmai Daiginjo, which is what former President of the United States Barack Obama was served during his visit to Japan, Ben tells us. Each sake is paired with Aussie fish such as South Australian yellow tail and local line-caught coral trout, freshly sliced in front of you by Doug as the sun sets over Pebble Beach in the backdrop – a perfect end to your stay at qualia.

COAST TO COAST

The next morning, you’ll fly from Hamilton Island to Hobart, via Sydney. Once you land in Hobart, a private transfer will take you to your overnight accommodation, the Henry Jones Art Hotel. Located on Hobart’s waterfront, the hotel is furnished with over 300 artworks with a continuously changing exhibition. Following a quick stay at the Henry Jones, you’ll be choppered out of Hobart to Saffire Freycinet. The 40-minute ride will show off Tasmania’s east coastline, until you finally come across the gleaming roof of Saffire Freycinet. From above, it looks as if a futuristic spaceship has landed in the middle of a dense, untouched forest. As entering qualia was breathtaking, Saffire is the same – but for different reasons. Here, the view of a tropical paradise is traded for a vivid backdrop of the rugged granite peaks that make up the surrounding Freycinet National Park. Glistening in front of the mountain peaks is the sapphire-blue Great Oyster Bay, where you’ll find some of the cleanest waters in the world. Your day will begin with a trip to the Freycinet Oyster Farm guided by Declan, the resident oyster expert. Throughout the drive up to the farm, Declan shares some back story about how the oyster farming industry, for which Freycinet has now become known, began with husband and wife Giles and Julia Fisher. “The farm had humble beginnings,” Declan says. “Today, during peak season, the farm is selling about 320 dozen oysters a day, and the only place you can get them is right here.” Declan warns us to watch our heads as he drives off the road down a narrow driveway that’s riddled with potholes filled with oyster shells. To truly experience oyster farming, you’ll need to be a brave wader – something not even Elle MacPherson could make look good. But we’re not here to look good – we’re here to eat oysters straight from the source. You’ll immerse yourself in the water farm until about hip deep. Depending on the season, the water temperature will fall between 14-21 degrees Celsius, so it’s never too hot or too cold to stand in. It’s here, submerged in water, where Declan runs through the life of an oyster. He starts from when it’s a microscopic larva right through to when it’s ready to be cracked open and devoured by eager food lovers like us. Fun fact: 20-30 adult oysters can produce about 250 million babies. Once Declan finishes explaining the life cycle of oysters, you’ll feel like an expert yourself – and that you’ve earned a well-deserved taste. Still submerged in water, you’ll waddle your way over to a long table set up with a crisp white tablecloth. Declan will produce champagne flutes, some bubbly and cheese and crackers from his backpack, the perfect companions to oyster tasting. Having just picked some oysters from the water, he shucks them. Seconds later, you’re coating them in a seasoning of your choice – ponzu, tabasco, or fresh lemon or lime – and gulping down some of the freshest oysters you’ll ever try. Oysters are an acquired taste, but these ones even had non-oyster lovers appreciating them. 72

ai Yi Xuan may get our nod for best dish of the year, but when it comes to best chef, the crown goes to its sister Four Seasons restaurant, Mio. Italian chef Aniello Turco has real pedigree – he’s worked stints at René Redzepi’s two-Michelin-starred Noma, and French superstar chef Alain Ducasse’s Andana restaurant in Tuscany. Since he joined the Four Season team in 2014, heading up the Italian cuisine at Mio, his star has been rising. Inspired by the ‘natural transformation of food’, and techniques such as fermentation, he thinks that, in the future, “nature will be the protagonist of avant-garde cuisine” – something you can easily tell from a glance through his crafted menu.

Here, quality ingredients take precedence over fiddly presentation or faffy techniques. Choose from the generous selection of cured meats on offer – 36-month-aged Joselito Spanish ham perhaps, or 16-month sweet-cured Prosciutto di Parma – before continuing on with a silky burrata cheese salad with garden-fresh tomato and basil. Next up, it’s lobster spaghetti with coral sauce, smoked beef short rib, Josper grill-cooked Japanese wagyu, or Alaskan black cod with caviar. Sounding a bit over the top for your tastes? of Huang Rui or surrealist paintings by Zhang Xiaogang, and Long March Space, a larger gallery that combines paintings with sculpture, video, and unconventional art forms such as magazines or cars. But it’s not just the art we love in Dashanzi – the shops are pretty top-notch too, whether it’s the tomes cluttering Timezone 8, a popular bookshop, or fine linen clothing in Ying’s Studio. his slick new cocktail bar, tucked away in trendy Sanlitun, couldn’t be more 2016 if it tried. First off, it’s not just a cocktail bar: according to its owners, it’s a “museum of liquid art” – and, as far as we can tell, actual art, as it comes with eye-catching pieces including a mural by local designers Plastered 8, bizarre prints, mixed media pieces and photography. Secondly, it’s got the furniture aesthetic down pat: it’s all Mad Menmodern chairs, leather banquet, brassfringed tables, and mood lighting in which to down their artful creations. Finally, this place knows that simple-but-serious drinks are way better than gimmicky crowd-pleasers.

You could get a well-made Negroni if you wanted, but far better to take advantage of its own innovative concoctions, none of which are overly flashy – think a saffron-barrel-aged gin martini laced with Lillet Blanc, or a cumin gin sour, complete with caramel, fresh lime, cumin-infused gin and pineapple juice. Saying that, if you are craving some flash, Black Moth can most certainly oblige. You can see outside each side of the car because of how vintage cars were built in the past. “You always get a full 180-degree view outside,” John says. “These babies are not like modern limousines, where the windows are tinted black so nobody can see in. Back in the day, people wanted to be seen in these cars.” It’s the perfect mode of transport for a day of touring some of the region’s exceptional vineyards. The plush lounge seat in the back of the car is also handy. “It’s not uncommon for my passengers to doze off in between wine tastings,” John chuckles. There are over a 150 vineyards in the area. Picking just a handful to visit can be tricky, but when you’re in the trusty hands of local expert John, you needn’t worry – he’ll curate the perfect itinerary for you.

If you’re looking to impress some in-laws or a significant other, but aren’t a wine expert, then this one is for you. The wine room is small and quaint, with images of past custodians of Yalumba on the walls. “This is a wine brand that’s all about family,” our host says. “This artwork behind me is one that Robert’s dad painted and has been used on the labels of two chardonnays and a sauvignon blanc.” In the summertime, the room is a cool respite. Come winter, the natural fireplace is lit up and one hour in the toasty warmth of the fire with a glass of wine in hand won’t be long enough. For the wine connoisseurs, a walk-through of Robert’s private collection is a must. “You need the golden key to enter. Well, it’s not actually gold – it’s brass – but it looks gold,” our host confesses. “I think it has a better ring to it.” While the key may not be gold, the collection certainly is. Stored in old concrete tanks that used to be used for fermenting, Robert’s private collection is the biggest independent collection of wines in Australia. Our host can’t even tell us how many bottles make it up. Walking through a maze of repurposed tanks with full wine racks from floor to ceiling, I’m guessing it’s somewhere in the tens of thousands. You’ll find wines in here from all over the world, and some of the bottles are so rare that you couldn’t even put a price tag on them.

SECOND STOP: ST HUGO

Speaking of big price tags, we move on to our next vineyard, St Hugo. Having just opened in December, John tells us that millions of dollars were poured into this new venue by owner Jacob’s Creek, which began winemaking back in 1847. Already a well-known and loved Australian label, Jacob’s Creek wanted to create more prestige wines under the St Hugo name to distance the wines from its commercial range. The result of this architecturally designed wine room is stunning. It’s different to Yalumba and most cellar doors around the region, which generally have a long history and carefully preserved buildings. But you wouldn’t know it – here, large glass walls enclose a modern space of concrete paired with warm wood interiors that still gives off that warm “cellar door” feel. “I guess the big difference between this and a cellar door is that we invite people to come in and stay,” says chief winemaker Dan Swincer. “We don’t do single tastings. Instead, we offer tasting flights of four different wines for $20. Because we’re a young brand, we want people to taste the variety we offer. When you order a flight, you also get some locally baked bread and dip to enjoy with your tasting. This is a place you come to spend a few hours.” St Hugo is trying to take a more European approach to wine, where it’s enjoyed over hours with friends and food – hence the reason its owners decided to add a restaurant to its cellar room. Mark McNamara, who briefly joins us at lunch to delve into the restaurant’s unique take on curating the menu. “It’s all about the wine,” Mark says. “First and foremost this is a vineyard producing outstanding wines, which is what the food is here to showcase.” Before the dishes of the menu are even conceptualised, a sommelier picks out the eight best wines to be paired, including two whites and a dessert white. From there a group of winemakers and chefs sit down, tasting the wines and breaking down the flavours. There’s about 50-60 ingredients to be paired with the wine on a list, which they all tick off if they think it will suit the flavour. “Once all these notes have been collated, I take over from there and create dishes to suit the wines,” Mark says. “Really the food is paired with the wines so that it doesn’t change the flavour of the wine, but rather enhances it.” We can’t argue with that. Our lunch of lime cured hiramasa kingfish paired with 2016 St Helga riesling, duck two ways paired with 2007 St Hugo cabernet sauvignon and fillet of beef with 2012 St Hugo Private Collection shiraz cabernet is, simply put, divine and perfectly matched. We can’t fault it.

THIRD STOP: SEPPELTSFIELD

After we’ve devoured lunch, that snooze John spoke about earlier is seductively drawing us in as we head to our final stop for the day. But the drive to Seppeltsfield is worth staying awake for. The 10-kilometre stretch that is Seppeltsfield Road is symmetrically lined with palm trees and is affectionately known as the “Avenue of Hopes and Dreams”. From here 88

you’ll be able to venture off the road to 15 different cellar doors, but we make our way to Seppeltsfield. Seppeltsfield was established in 1851 by Joseph and Joanna Seppelt, Prussian immigrants who escaped Europe due to political unrest. They originally came to South Australia to continue their tobacco-growing business; unfortunately, the climate and landscape didn’t support the harvesting of tobacco, so Joseph decided to venture into vine growing, which turned out to be a very wise decision. He began with 121 acres and slowly built that up to 1,200. Joseph had grand visions to build a bigger warehouse. During construction, however, he and his wife Joanna passed away, leaving their legacy to 21-year-old son Beno, who fulfilled his parents’ dream and is responsible for establishing the roots of the brand. To celebrate the completion of the building in 1878, Beno put aside a barrel of his finest tawny port, and declared it was not to be opened for 100 years. Every year since then, that tradition has been upheld, making the Seppeltsfield collection of tawny the oldest continuous collection of any commercially available wine in the world. Your Birth Year experience. Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, are among some of the famous names to take part in this tradition. Surrounding us are long rows of large barrels marked with the year of their production. We’re asked our birth year, and our guide takes us over to the barrel of the winery’s finest tawny from that year. He takes the lid off the cask and inserts what looks to be a giant eyedropper, extracting syrupy brown liquid, before pouring it into a port glass. The idea is this: if you’re in your twenties, you’ll try the 20-year-old tawny, which will taste sweet. The older you get, the sweetness begins to disappear and the taste becomes sharper and more intense. Once you’ve tasted your birth year, you’ll also get to taste the 100-year-old tawny. For us, it was the 1917 version. Thicker than the birth year and much punchier in taste, the centennial tawny still has a dash of sweetness that is signature of the dessert wine. While time travel might not actually exist, you can definitely get a taste of the past at the Barossa.

This viral video is simplicity itself, entitled ‘cute pandas playing on a slide’. It does what it says on the tin: roughly 90 seconds of four cute-as-a-kitten baby pandas bundling over each other on a wooden slide at the Chengdu Research Base in Sichuan. If that doesn’t tell you everything about the popularity of the loveable pandas and the world’s never-ending love affair with these black-and-white beauties, then nothing will. That these playful pandas reside in Chengdu should be of little surprise – the central Chinese region of Sichuan is home to the majority of the panda population (estimates are around the 80% mark, with some residing in Shaanxi and Gansu), with the mountains their natural habitat. Just as the people of Sichuan – and, indeed, the world – have enjoyed the sight of the pandas playing, they’ve paid the animals back in kind. Ever since the giant panda was labelled “endangered” in 1990, the Sichuan province has led the fightback, with reserves and research centres across the region helping to breed, release, heal and protect the pandas. >

It’s not yet out of the woods, so to speak, but it’s heading in the right direction, with the last count revealing there to be 1,864 in the wild as of 2014: a 17% rise in population over a decade. “Knowing that the panda is now a step further from extinction is an exciting moment for everyone committed to conserving the world’s wildlife and their habitats,” said Marco Lambertini, WWF director general at the time, before adding, “The recovery of the panda shows that when science, political will and engagement of local communities come together, we can save wildlife and also improve biodiversity.” While a bit of panda-based frolic and frippery might seem like nothing more than a way to avoid getting your actual work done, the exposure given to the cause by such videos has led to visitors flooding to Chengdu to meet the furry film stars and give much-needed exposure to their plight. > 96

Officially, that plight might have only started with the “endangered” status 25 or so years ago, but they first came to the attention of the people of China in 1953, when a wild panda was found in a town near Dujiangyan, a city no more than an hour’s drive north of Chengdu and on the doorstep of the mountains. It was rescued and brought back to health by what was then Chengdu Zoo and, ultimately, the seeds of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding were sown. With huge swathes of the panda’s habitat being wiped out in the 70s and 80s – it’s thought 250 starved to death in a decade from 1974 – launching a breeding program became a necessity. Chengdu Zoo did exactly that in 1987, and the Chengdu Research Base was ultimately launched. Under its new mantle, it has also been at the forefront of all efforts to revive the population in the wild. Initially its effort went into getting the famous shy bears to breed and provide the world with, as one commentator described, “an insurance policy against extinction.” With six rescued pandas as the first residents, they set about the task of breeding an animal never before bred in captivity – and yet within 20 years of starting the process, 136 baby pandas had come into the world at the base. Some were more prolific than others. Mei Mei was the pin-up panda mum of the 1980s and gave birth seven times, creating 11 offspring – the majority of whom are still around today (pandas live for 20 to 30 years, in case you were wondering). Successors Qing Qing and Ya Ya topped even Mei Mei’s achievements, however, both bringing 13 cubs into the world from nine births. The base’s achievements keep racking up. Working with nature reserves across the province, the base hasn’t just been about rearing the next generation; it has also acted as a panda hospital, helping sick and starving wild pandas – that have been rescued by the reserves – back to health and back into the world. Having a healthy, growing, population of wild giant pandas has always been at the heart of the work at Chengdu. Eventually, when it’s safe to do so, even the newborns will be released back into the mountains. Watching the videos of the pandas at play makes it easy to forget all the people behind the scenes at this scientific research centre working to fight all manner of problems facing the panda. From the numerous disease to which the pandas are susceptible, to the challenges of the ever-changing natural environment and the incredible complicated reproductive system, the research wing of the Chengdu centre is immense and the true heart of the base. And that’s before you get to the education. Going back to the value of the viral video, without educating visitors and the wider world about the panda and its numerous challenges, there wouldn’t be paying guests and therefore no funding for the scientific and environmental side of things. Don’t underestimate the power of the popularity. That the pandas – both as babies and adults – are arguably the cutest animal on the planet doesn’t do them any harm either. Having said that, it turns out being cute isn’t the only reason we love them. According to one expert, it’s their similarity to humans that actually draws us in. “People love big eyes because it reminds them of children,” Ron Swaisgood, director of applied animal ecology at San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, told the UK’s BBC. “Our own young have characteristics that we humans respond to such as a big, round head, large eyes, a high forehead, and a roly-poly body. We are programmed to respond to these babyish looks. Babies just make us like them and want to care for them. It’s part of our human make-up.” And so, now that you know you’re genetically set up to fall for those mountain teddy bears, you might as well just give in and head for Chengdu. 101

Barangaroo’s brand new dining precinct is part of a multi-million-dollar redevelopment of wasted waterfront. The prime real estate was once a barren industrial wharf, but has emerged as a modern promenade you’d expect to find in France or Greece. Lotus Dining’s spot is right on the edge of Wulugul Walk – modern Chinese dining has never looked so good. Shanghai-born head chef Chris Yan’s menu is designed for family-style sharing. The restaurant group’s famous dumplings make an appearance, but much inspiration is drawn from the location. The harbour is just a stone’s throw from your table as you throw back oysters served with lemon aspen sorbet and butterfly pea flowers, or peruse the live seafood tanks filled with southern rock lobster and Queensland mud crab. The menu uses local produce where possible, fused with traditional dishes dating back to the Ming dynasty. Try Kinkawooka Bay mussels served with Tsing Tao and lemon myrtle, or 18-hour slowcooked beef ribs and kale drizzled in soy and ponzu. The spiced crispy chicken already has a local following, but if you can, save room for dessert. Pastry Chef Tiffany Jones is breaking the mould on Chinese sweet treats, with dishes like duck egg macarons and yuzu cheesecake.

o talk of China’s potential in any sport, is to state the obvious. When your population is upwards of a billion or so, you can pretty much achieve anything you set your mind to. The rule certainly applies to golf, and while America might not be looking over its shoulder and worrying about its golfing superpower status just yet, China is coming up on the rails. A glance at the world rankings might not give much cause for concern. The top 100 has no names with a Chinese flag alongside, and you have to keep scrolling down to 134 to find the first – 21-year-old Li Haotong at world no. 134. But don’t be fooled by his lowly position. In 2015, as a 20-year-old debutant, he joined the tour with aplomb, taking the Volvo China Open title at Beijing’s Topwin Golf and Country Club with a final round of 64. And last year, he secured T2 at the Turkish Airlines Open, and with it the prize purse of €557,077. But it’s not the potential of Haotong that has made the sport take note; it’s over in the women’s game, where you only need to glance at the top five rankings to find your first Chinese player – namely, Guangzhou-born Feng Shanshan (in fourth). A perennial contender in all the majors, and winner of several LPGA tour events, Shanshan’s real moment in the Chinese spotlight came at the Olympics – the doyen of all sporting occasions in the eyes of both officials and the public in China – when she captured a bronze medal in Rio. “If anybody [of the four Chinese players in the Olympic tournaments] can have a good result, maybe a medal, it’s going to really change everything about golf in China,” she said at the time. “And of course, I mean, I made it, so that made me even more happy about it.” >

That bronze medal – a single shot shy of silver – was truly worth its weight in gold to China’s golfing community. For the Olympics, golf had found its way from the niche cable channels to mainstream television, so everyone could celebrate Shanshan’s efforts. It’s something she was only too aware of when playing, as she said at the time. “It’s really a unique experience for golf to be broadcast live on public channels together with other mainstream Olympic sports in China for more people to understand it and learn to enjoy it,” she said. “The Olympics also provided a chance for China’s top golfers to be known by the world and their own people at home, and to prove that the Chinese can be competitive in the sport as well.” Those views were echoed enthusiastically by Zhang Xiaoning, vice president of the China Golf Association, who said of the bronze: “Feng’s finish on the podium has made the dream of Chinese golf come true.”

NATURAL WONDERS

China’s wannabe golf Olympians – and indeed those of us looking for a new destination to take our clubs – have some truly spectacular settings from which to choose. Just as the nation’s playing numbers are on the rise – thought to be upwards of five million – so too are the courses. Even though a clutch were shut down in an official clampdown in 2015, the building of resorts and clubs has been fervent since the millennium. A new report states that there are close to 500 courses with a further 56 in development, and as with so many things, China doesn’t do things by halves.

Take Skydoor Golf Club in Zhangjiajie, Hunan – a more rural setting showing the very best of Chinese landscape you couldn’t wish for. Designed by American architect Richard Mandell on the doorstep of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, and facing the cave of Tianmen Mountain, the main 18 covers 342 acres and works its way through a land of jungle, wetlands and lakes, with Mandell using every trick in his book to create a course that’s challenging but still in keeping with the surrounding geography. Balancing nature with the demands of a modernday golfer is key to the success of rural courses in China – the courses on offer are occasionally so ethereal, they could only be built here. With such unique landscapes as a canvas, the golfing picture painted could be one of the most stunningly unique in the world – as long as it can get the golf aficionados on board. Too hard and they’ll worry about their handicap; too easy and they won’t bother making the trip. To the traveller who just wants to hit in a stunning location, it’s hard to go wrong with any course in the hard-to-reach places of China. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Course in Yunnan is a par 72 facing the mountain from which it got its name. It’s also the second highest in the world (at 3,100 metres above sea level), the longest par 72, and its fifth hole – par five, 711 yards – is the longest par five on the planet. This is a course that manages to set records while also being a true natural, woodland, beauty. But as easy as it is on the eye, it’s not so easy on the scorecard – the shortest par four is 436 yards. Don’t expect to beat your handicap, but you won’t care too much – not with the view of the snow-topped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to ease your woes. Completing a trio of picture-postcard courses is Stoneforest International Golf Club, also in Yunnan. > 115

The name gives it away; this three championshipcourse destination is set within a UNESCO world heritage site, with each course meandering its way through the karst peaks, giving it a truly stone-age feel. Amid wildly varied rock formations, there’s no place quite like this – you’re playing at one of the world’s truly great natural wonders. And although you’ll no doubt need to be mindful of dangerously ricocheting golf balls, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a course as bewitching as this one.

THREE TOP 100 COURSES

Naturally, bucket-list golfers often start their list of courses with Golf Digest’s top 100, and considering China’s comparative infancy in the market, the fact it has three entrants in this US- and UK-dominated listing is impressive. A regular on the listing, and currently placed 86, is Shanghai’s Sheshan Golf Club. Perhaps one of China’s most well-known courses due to it hosting – for all but one year when Mission Hills hosted it, more of whom later – the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament since 2005. The prize fund is just shy of US$10m which gives you some idea of the calibre of the course itself. Globally renowned architects Nelson and Haworth are the masterminds behind the 18 holes, and they’ve created a course that has been voted China’s best and has hosted the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson. Yunnan, specifically Kunming, provides another entrant with the lakeside Robert Trent Jones Jrdesigned Spring City Golf and Lake Resort coming in at 75. Hugging the shoreline of the Yang Zone Hai Lake, the 7,200-yard, par-72 Lake Course is challenging with tight, narrow fairways bordered by lush, green terraces. Given that the resort’s other course, the Mountain, is designed by Jack Nicklaus, it’s a golfing nirvana and the golf lodges and villas offer perfect overnight luxury.

Ranking far about these two stalwarts of the Chinese golf scene – both of whom simultaneously claim to be the nation’s best – is a comparative newcomer, Shanqin Bay Golf Club on Bao-ao, Hainan Island, off the south coast, near Guangdong. The tropical island location is only one tick-in-the-box of many. It overlooks the South China Sea, has a white sandy beach alongside and is the work of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, whose work includes Tasmania’s Lost Farm at Barnbougle – elements of which you can find delicately echoed in Shanqin Bay. There’s the roughest of rough terrain, wind-swept fairways abound and ridge-top greens that you’ll need to be careful not to miss. It’s a coastal course that is almost as challenging to play as it was to build on this mountainous landscape. The only thing harder, in fact, is getting a tee time; it’s super exclusive (a reported double-digit membership), but if you do manage to get on, that exclusivity means you and your playing partners will rarely see other golfers all day. >

THE RECORD-BREAKING RESORT

The naturally breathtaking and hottest-ticket-in-town get rolled into one when it comes to Mission Hills, without doubt the daddy of all golfing utopias in China. It has exclusivity and accessibility all at the same time, but with an incredible 22 courses across three sites forming a 40 square kilometre golfing playground, that’s hardly surprising. What started out as a solitary golf course with a clubhouse in 1992, expanded quickly after winning the rights to host the World Cup of golf. The clubhouse was soon joined by a five-star hotel, two courses became four, then five (by 2001), one site became three, and in the relative blink of an eye China had the world’s biggest golf resort. All three resorts lie in the south: Shenzhen (10 courses) and Dongguan (five) are pretty much adjoined, whereas the world-record holder Haikou is on the tropical island of Hainan with its dozen courses over 20 square kilometres. The 350-acre Blackstone – given its name by the volcanic rock on which it’s built – is the signature course, and rightly so having given World Cup contenders in 2011 plenty of testing times with its testing route that’s been carved out of the most rugged landscape and thick vegetation, not to mention wetlands and lakelands. You could write an endless tome on platitudes for the golf of Mission Hills, but for some, its key attraction exists off the course. Not content with just offering up your predictable five-star spa and hotel offering, or even restaurants serving up every cuisine both local and European, Mission Hills also has some very notable extras. It could be the 44,000 square metres of volcanic mineral springs that grab your attention, or maybe even the water theme park with its slides, water guns, beach soccer and volleyball courts. Perhaps even more tempting, could be the new Centreville complex, a vast entertainment, retail and leisure complex that includes one of the world’s largest duty free shopping malls, a cinema, restaurants and hotels including a Ritz-Carlton and Hard Rock Hotel.

But most extravagant of all has to be Movie Town, a collaboration between Mission Hills, a film studio and famed Chinese movie director Feng Xiaogang. Together they built a whole town based on famous scenes from Xiagang’s flicks. You’ll find ‘districts’ such as 1942 Street, based on the film Back to 1942, which is basically an area full of buildings from the Republican era across four cities – Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing and Shanghai – allowing you to effectively step back in time. Other areas take you to the 19th century; 1950s Beijing; an area of European churches and town squares; an Avenue of Stars featuring international celebrities; and of course an actual movie studio, so you can see how the real thing is made. Movie Town might seem at odds with your traditional golf resort setting, but so too is Mission Hills. Unlike any other golfing destination on the planet, it’s made every effort to be world-beating both on the course and off it. It doesn’t shy away from giving the kids exactly what they want and isn’t afraid to break with every golf resort convention in order to do so. Even with a whole town based on a town in a film, which is based on a town in real life, Mission Hills makes total sense. It’s perhaps the only golf resort in the world where the sideshows battle the golf for headline status. Either way, the real winner is the golf traveller. And, given some of the holes on Blackstone, perhaps the only loser is your handicap. One thing is for sure: if the ambition of Mission Hills is anything to go by, China’s famed golfing potential will be realised sooner than anyone could possibly think. 119

he 90-minute jaunt from Melbourne to Daylesford, Australia’s most loved spa town, takes you through nearly every Australian landscape. City, wine country, scruffy farmland, dense bush and finally the small country town nestled in bushland that is the very meaning of the word “quaint”. A rolling fog shrouds the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, adding some extra theatre as you pull into town. Golden leafed trees lead you along Main Road, the route through town acting as a hub for the surrounding spas and restaurants that have made this weekend town famous Settled in 1855, Daylesford was originally known for the lavish production of potatoes thanks to its rich volcanic soil. Fortunately, today that rich soil and landscape has been put to better use – and a little more our style. With only 2,000 or so residents in town, it’s far from booming, but that’s exactly what gives it its charm. The twin towns of Daylesford and Hepburn have a long tradition of using the natural springs to rejuvenate and revitalise. As the home to the largest concentration of mineral springs in Australia, rich in magnesium, calcium and silica, the region’s holistic springs have long been believed to cure all sorts of afflictions. In the late 1800s, gold sluicing was even halted to protect the springs, leading to the Hepburn Bathhouse and Mineral Spring Reserve being built. >

Hepburn Bathhouse is the oldest and largest spa in the region and after a recent remodel and expansion should be your number one stop to ease those weary bones. Built in 1895, the historic bathhouse has become something of an icon for the region. Surrounded by lush rainforest, you’ll be able to take a load off indoors in the main communal mineral water pool with views of the rainforest outside. However, if you’d rather something more private or specific, you can also treat yourself to one of the treatments in the sanctuary, including relaxation pools, aroma steam rooms and a salt therapy pool. Located on the original Mineral Spring Reserve, there’s easy access to the regional park, with walks and hikes for every level. They’re complete with oldfashioned pumps and pipes along the routes, with freeflowing natural mineral water straight from the stream from which you can drink directly.

A DASH OF PEPPERS While Hepburn Bathhouse is the most well known bathhouse in the region, that hasn’t stopped nearly every resort and hotel from jumping on the natural spring bandwagon. And why not? There’s plenty to go round. Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel, originally built in 1935, has evolved into a romantically elegant boutique hotel complete with all the trimmings. Its grand 1930s style and surrounding hedge gardens create a classic atmosphere where enjoying a wine by the communal fireplace creates the feeling of the home you wish you had. Of course, even in spa country there’s only so much bathing you can do, so fortunately Daylesford is no stranger to good food as well. Perfectly located among Victorian farmland, the only thing that can match Daylesford’s spring water is its produce. Also located in Peppers, the chef-hatted Argus Dining Room represents the elegant charm and attention to detail for which the area has come to be known. With meat and vegetables picked fresh from Argus’ very own farm at Vale Hill, the team at Argus is dedicated to weaving Daylesford directly onto the plate. The modern Australian seasonal menu emphasises fresh and regional flavours. Dishes like the beef cooked in ash with pumpkin puree and radish or the rhubarb gingerbread with chocolate gelato are some of the standouts, but with inventive chef David Willcocks and a seasonal menu, you’ll be sampling something new straight from the farm every visit.

A PINCH OF SAULT On the edge of town, enveloped by fields of lavender and a wedding chapel on a lake lies Sault, one of the most fairytale-like restaurants in the region. Housed inside an unassuming stone cottage, Sault opens up into a bright, high-ceilinged space overlooking lavender fields adorned with fresh flowers and rustic timber floors and furniture. The team at Sault, led by head chef Santiago Nine-Fernandez, continually reinvent the menu, adding some truly unique regional flavours that draw travellers back every season. >

Starting with entrées like seasonal vegetables, Mahón cheese spheres with mushroom and bergamot consommé, you can’t get much fresher. Owners Jodi Flockhart and her husband Damien started at Sault over eight years ago and have continually expanded on the space as a restaurant and wedding venue. Still working on the floor of the restaurant and behind the bar, the couple bring some much-appreciated familiarity to the experience. “It’s really enriching to work with such amazing regional produce and wine. It has also been great to find chefs that really understand what Sault is trying to capture and leave the creativity up to them,” Jodi says. “Also, you can’t leave without trying the white chocolate and lemon soft-centred fondant.”

AND ALL THE REST A weekend of eating and being pampered will exhaust even the best of us, so a decent place to lay your head is a must. If you ask the locals or any regular Daylesford visitor, you’ll hear of The Lake House, situated directly on (you guessed it) Lake Daylesford. The rooms overlooking the lake range from smaller studios to luxurious suites, but it’s The Retreat that’s really worth your time: a secluded country cottage tucked into the grounds at The Lake House complete with fireside leather lounges, stocked bar and wine fridge, private parking and two spacious bedrooms. While you could easily spend your days secluded in luxury, the property is one that demands you explore all its ins and outs. Six acres of lush gardens filled with wobbling ducks, tennis courts, cooking schools and vegetable patches you can sample lead you directly to the lake shore. Whether you’re exploring the grounds dotted with sculptures from local artists, relaxing at the in-house spa, popping into co-owner and resident artist Allan Wolf-Tasker’s personal painting studio or sitting down for a bite to eat at the renowned two-chef-hatted Lake House restaurant under the direction of culinary heavyweight Alla Wolf-Tasker (yes, that’s Alla and Allan!), it’s safe to say you’ll never be wanting for more to do. With several organic farms only minutes away, the team headed by chef David Green sources everything fresh daily, creating every dish and side from scratch – right down to the bread and charcuterie range. Meat, sheep and goat’s milk cheese, heirloom fruit from old orchards and windfalls from local gardens come into the kitchen each morning. The menu is designed to reflect the season and continues to find new ways to surprise guests. Dishes like butter poached pheasant with chestnuts and farrow in autumn; spring lamb with asparagus and morels; or the golden roasted free range chicken of summer with corn and yabbies are just some of what you might sample. Daylesford might just be the whole package as a weekender town: great food and a spa on every corner mixed with a tranquil farm-meets-bush environment. And that’s not to mention all the galleries, cafes and private retreats it has attracted. This might be a small town, but taking it slow and keeping it simple is the whole point here. Meander around the lake, sample some local dishes and, most importantly, soak up those healing natural minerals for which Daylesford is known. 126

Now one can crank up the air con, revel in the flawless leather and zip along at up to 270kmh without the worry of ever-rising petrol prices. It’s the small things that make a difference. Of course, as austerity measures go, this is a pretty painless one. For a start, the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 diesel is so quiet, you’d have to get your head under the bonnet to notice it. There’s no compromise with speed, either – the Bentayga is the world’s fastest diesel SUV. With SUVs, though, top speed is rarely a concern. Buyers tend to look at power first – after all, you never know when you might want to tow your yacht to a new marina. Gin, the juniper-flavoured grain spirit, is having a renaissance – and Australia’s craft distillers are up there with the best, reckons Alex Mead Depending on whether you’re reading this from an Australian or Chinese perspective, your view on the “gin craze” will be wildly different. If it’s the former, then you’ll know it’s the drop of choice for every discerning drinker and that a week barely passes without a new craft gin distiller getting its copper pot still up and running. If it’s the latter, well, it could be the only beefeater you know of are the ones with the funny outfits you saw guarding the Tower of London when you visited the British capital. But in the US, Canada, Britain, Europe and Australia, gin is the spirit capturing the imagination of bartenders, mixologists and, of course, hipsters. A negroni – gin, Campari, vermouth – tops the list of signatures at any bar worth its salt-rimmed glasses. If not a negroni, then definitely a gin martini (ideally the James Bond favourite, the Vesper: gin with vodka and the French aperitif Kina Lillet); and, of course, the simplistic gin and tonic is a drink order that needs to be overheard. Just as the US and England have had a swathe of craft gin distillers emerge with their vintage-style brands and bottles like a swarm of ice-cream sellers in a heatwave, so too has Australia. It goes handin-hand with the bar scene that has seen a rash of boutique cocktail joints emerge due to a change in the licensing laws. Australian spirit lovers are making up for lost time, and already we have some brilliant craft gin makers. The Navy-strength (57%) from McHenry Distillery in Tasmania is among the best (and has the awards to prove it), while fellow Aussie isle Kangaroo Island has a wonderfully herby, earthy Wild Gin that uses native juniper to give it a seasonality that few distillers can match. Batches of just 45 bottles make it super premium, too. Melbourne, meanwhile, is never far from any trend, and suitably the efforts of Melbourne Gin Company pay dividends to the drinker: you get a gin with botanicals both local and exotic from grapefruit and rosemary to macadamia, orris and cassia, the mix giving it some complex notes, but ones that make a cracking martini. As for those in China, or those heading there, The Distillery in Beijing is an oasis in a city where hotels are the mainstay for the gin drinker. The name isn’t just for show – not only do they serve the best gins from around the world and make arguably the city’s best martini, but they also make their own London dry gin. China might not have quite taken to gin just yet, but in The Distillery it has a good starting point. Alex Mead is a London-based journalist who thoroughly enjoys gin.

Our rich heritage spans over 53 years. My father, Mr Anton Bahar, began as a jewellery manufacturer and very quickly became synonymous in Australia for the finest quality jewellery coupled with exceptional value and service. My brother Sevan and I now manage the Anton business, which is home to a collection of Australia’s most exceptional jewellery and rare watch collections. I was born into the business, and as a child I watched my dad work countless hours designing and manufacturing jewellery. I then saw my brother follow his lead. They were so passionate and determined together.
