FIRST WORDS

with the Editor & Publisher

Out for a SPIN I like cars, but I’ve never been very good at buying them. “What’s wrong?” my wife said early the morning after I’d bought an SUV. “Oh, nothing to worry about,” I whispered in the dark. “Go back to sleep.’’ “I’m up now,” she said. “What’s wrong?” “I’m just worried,” I said, “I paid too much for the car.” “Oh, no,” she said. Oh, yes, I confirmed when I reviewed the fine print in morning light. The salesman had quoted me a price I thought included the sales tax. It did not. “I paid too much for the car,” I said, over breakfast. “Oh, no,” she said. “Yes, but I’m going to take it back,’’ I said. “The salesman said I could.’’ “You know your son loves the car,” she said. “He’s not going to be happy.’’ “We’ve only owned it for a day,” I said. “I drove him to school just once in it.” “He loves the car,” she said. “He’s bragging about it to his friends.’’ “He’s only 5 years old,” I said. “He’ll get over it.’’ He’s 19 now. I checked with him the other day. He’s not over it. “I loved that car,’’ he says. “I wanted to keep it.’’ “Oh, stop,’’ I say. “Get over it.’’ I thought about that morning after test driving the new, redesigned Jaguar F-Type V8 S for a review this issue, pg 80. Yes, in addition to giving the magazine a fresh look, reorganizing the features and giving you more help throughout these pages for enjoying South Florida, we had time to try new restaurants, talk with new South Florida residents Beth and Howard Stern and test drive some really cool new cars. We are driven, on your behalf. The 2014 Jaguar F-Type V8 S may be my personal car of the year, but I fear it is a completely impractical car for my personal life.

20

There is no trunk space. There is no back seat. It burns a gallon of gas every 16 miles in the city. I really do not need to make an entrance at the Casino de Monte Carlo that often. But it is a glorious toy. “I loved that car,’’ I said, after my test drive from Fort Lauderdale to Boca Raton to North Miami. “I want to keep it.’’ “Oh, stop,’’ my wife said. “But,” I said, “I already bragged about it to my friends.” “What are you, 5 years old?” she said. “Get over it.” It’s not that easy. Here’s the thing about driving a super car: It changes the way you think. And not just about driving. Get behind someone texting or talking on the phone in traffic? Step on the accelerator, and they’re gone. Craving some attention? Cruise down A-1-A, and all heads turn. Wish the valet would park your car out front instead of in some forlorn parking garage where the doors are going to get dinged? Pull up to a valet stand in a Jaguar F-Type sometime, and compare/contrast the reaction you got the last time you pulled up in an SUV your kid loves. “I could get used to this,” I say. A super car makes you feel, well, super. “Until you try to put groceries in the trunk,” she says. And, of course, she is right. She’s always right. So, I am not driving the F-Type today. It’s out of my system. Stepped on the accelerator, left it behind. Really. At least for now. Here’s hoping the new, redesigned City & Shore will make you feel super. Take it for a spin of your own, let me know how it goes. —Mark Gauert mgauert@cityandshore.com

e know what pro athletes are doing during the season – training, traveling and putting it all on the court, diamond or gridiron. But what do they do after the clock runs out on the last game of the year? City & Shore caught up with several athletes – Heat point guard Mario Chalmers, Dolphins guard Richie Incognito and Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton – to find out how they spend their off-season.

players find other ways to play – and get others in the game By Elizabeth Rahe

Mario Chalmers, Miami Heat Point Guard

Life during the NBA Championships got a bit hectic, what with nail-biting overtime wins and game-turning 3-pointers. After the championship win there were the parades, the interviews, the celebrations. Then it was time for Miami Heat point guard Mario “Rio” Chalmers, 27, to unplug for the summer. We talked to Chalmers a week after the Heat won the NBA title for the second consecutive year and a couple of days after Heat President Pat Riley announced the decision to keep him on next season, his sixth with the team. No wonder. Chalmers averaged 8.6 points per game last season, and in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, he racked up 20

IN THE CITY What are your goals for the future? Personally, to keep being successful, keep being a positive role model. Career-wise, to get a couple more endorsements, to be a face that people recognize. And of course, keep winning championships.

Richie Incognito, Miami Dolphins Guard As a guard on the Miami Dolphins offensive line, it’s Richie Incognito’s job to use his 6-foot-3, 319-pound bulk as a human shield and battering ram. He did his job so well last season he started all 16 games and made it to the Pro Bowl. The 30-year-old athlete works hard all year to stay in blocking and sprinting shape – and it’s not all about the 450-pound bench presses and 700-pound squats he powered when he was at the University of Nebraska. Incognito, who is expected to earn $4 million, spoke with us from Fort Lauderdale in June, before heading home to Scottsdale, Ariz., just in time to take a swim in his new backyard pool. sw

Any time I get down time I like to travel. I’m definitely a beach tim bum – chasing summer for most of the winter. bu like to go to Hawaii; last year I went to Brazil I lik and Argentina. points and followed up with 14 points in Game 7. What do you do in the off-season? I just pretty much relax, hang out with my kids. I also have a golf tournament and a youth basketball camp [both in Kansas] through my foundation. How’s your son’s game? I’ve taught him a lot of tricks. He’s pretty advanced for his age [5]. How do you stay in shape? I do different training – boxing, lifting weights, Pilates. What do you do for relaxation? Play video games, go bowling, shoot pool. You have been called the little brother her of the Heat. After your performance in the championships, do you think you’re growing ng up? I feel like I’m growing up. At the same me time, the guys [LeBron James, Dwyane ne Wade and Chris Bosh] are getting older. I feel like they respect me a lot more, and d they’re taking more notice of what I can do. o. Not your same old fitness class

Wouldn’t it be great if all workouts could be like this? That seemed to be the collective thought at the inaugural “Yoga On the Green” – a lively event at Bonaventure Resort & Spa in Weston that looks nothing like the average fitness class. With live music, gourmet foods and local vendors displaying organic cosmetics and other treats, the early morning gathering feels more like a street fair. The quarterly yogafest on the golf resort’s lakefront 18th green has a relaxing vibe, but its three instructors mean business. More than 50 participants came out for the last event, and most appeared to have been rigorously tested. “It’s not typical to have a program like this at a spa or resort,” says Phylice Kessler, fitness director of Bonaventure’s aLaya Spa. “Most gyms and spas don’t know how to approach it. But if you look at the trends, more people are turning to it because it’s a non-impact workout.” While boot camps and other “strongman”-style classes have also gained in popularity over the past decade, even its devotees acknowledge that such jarring workouts can pummel the body. “Yoga is something almost anyone can do,” Kessler says. “It’s a The next “Yoga On The Green” will be Sept. 21. Renowned sopranos open Venetian Arts Society season

Legendary soprano Virginia Zeani has likened an opera performer to a torero and the audience to a toro. “We have not to kill them,” the Romanian-born prima donna and renowned voice teacher has said, “but sometimes to kill them [with] joy.” South Florida opera lovers may share in that joy as the Venetian Arts Society brings Zeani and Metropolitan Opera star Leona Mitchell to Fort Lauderdale for its Art Salon series. The ongoing events, which blend performances with educational programs and social gatherings, are modeled after the salon experiences originating in 16th century Italy. Zeani, now living in West Palm Beach, will be honored at the society’s Gala Salon Sept. 28 at Cinema Paradiso in Fort Lauderdale. The evening begins with cocktails, followed by a film highlighting Zeani’s celebrated 35-year career. She sang major roles in 69 operas and performed the role of Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata more than 600 times before retiring from the stage in 1982 to teach. Zeani and New Zealand author Roger Beaumont will discuss the biography he is writing about her, and the evening will conclude with a champagne reception. Mitchell takes the stage for the Venetian Arts Society’s next salon experience Oct. 25-26, a concert Virginia Zeani and champagne reception followed the next morning by a master class, both at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. The Grammy-winning soprano performed with New York’s Metropolitan Opera for 18 seasons as well as in great opera houses around the world.

two genres hold special meaning for Miami Beach filmmaker By Elizabeth Rahe

n the thriller 36 Saints, a serial killer targets

teenage victims with saintly names. In the family-friendly Tio Papi (aka Uncle Daddy) a bachelor struggles to care for his six orphaned nieces and nephews. As different as these films are, to producer/writer/actor Joey Dedio, they share a common thread – in addition to their Sept. 6 release date. “What ties them together is the unity of family,” says Dedio, who lives in Miami Beach and also has homes in New York and Los Angeles. “Even the teenagers in 36 Saints became a family.” He extends the metaphor to the cast and crew, many of whom worked together over the course of a year shooting these two films along with the 2012 release Musical Chairs (about a group of misfits involved in a wheelchair ballroom dance competition). The process fostered unity and understanding and “kept the creative juices flowing,” he says. Dedio’s career reaches to the mid-’80s with a role on the NBC soap Another World. Over the years he appeared or lent his voice to dozens of film, stage and TV productions. After playing Vin Diesel’s friend in the 1997 independent film Strays, he formed his own production company, Active Fox. CITYANDSHORE.COM

ON THE SHORE He has produced a half-dozen indie films, but these last two projects are especially meaningful. After wrapping up filming in Dec. 2011, he went for his regular physical and discovered he had stage IV cancer. While undergoing treatment he worked on cutting the films. “Seeing those kids on the screen was the biggest joy. It got me through every day,” Dedio says. “After a year of surgeries and chemo and radiation, I’m 100-percent cancer-free.” Tio Papi, co-written, produced by and starring Dedio, has been nominated for five Imagen Latino entertainment awards, including Best Actor for Dedio and Best Feature Film. Although it happens to be about a Latino family, the filmmaker says it has touched people of all cultures at festivals across the country, including the 2012 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. “It’s all about the family, and I think anybody can relate to that – what really matters most family.” is fa For a Q&A with TioPapiMovie.com, Ti filmmaker Joey 36SaintsMovie.com 36 Dedio, visit or via Facebook. cityandshore.com and on iPad

When pods of dolphins or whales become beached along the coast, volunteers are eager to assist in a rescue effort. “The instinct is to jump in and help,” says Beth Smart, founder of the Dolphin and Marine Medical Research Foundation in West Palm Beach. Knowing what to do quickly and efficiently is essential because they quickly dehydrate, Smart says, so she has helped develop protocols for volunteers. Smart and the foundation also sponsored the training of a dog to detect stranded dolphins that may be hidden in vegetation, such as mangrove roots. Cloud, an 8-year-old black Lab, lives in Key Largo, where Smart says she remains “on call.” The last major dolphin stranding was in 2005 when about 80 roughtoothed dolphins floundered off Marathon. Pods of pilot whales stranded off Cudjoe Key in 2011 and Fort Pierce in 2012. City & Shore caught up with Smart to find out what keeps her swimming with the dolphins. Education: Bachelor of science degree in biology from Greensboro College and a master of medical science in the Physician Assistant Program from Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University. Happy milestone anniversaries

Three enterprises making South Florida a better place 10 YEARS Alonzo Mourning

– the Miami Heat all-star turned philanthropist – follows a simple rule for success at his Overtown Youth Center: “We give our own last-names to every child. If my last name is Mourning and you’re a student here, then your last-name is Mourning too! We’re responsible for them from the moment they come into the program in 2nd Grade – until they leave at age 25.” The Overtown Youth Center, celebrating its 10th Anniversary, is an educational and social enrichment center – a haven for less-advantaged kids in Miami’s inner-cities. Participants are public-school students who, without OYC’s extensive extra-curricular programs, would typically have little hope of attending college, or improving their present circumstances. Offering extras such as tutors, dance classes, music lessons, athletics, test prep and the like – everyday supplements that give other kids a leg up – OYC also digs in with the basics, providing help with social skills, health care, college applications, campus tours, job-hunting – even getting that first apartment. Support through 36

young adulthood, says Mourning, is crucial in creating “productive people.” During lunch recently at South Beach restaurant Prime One Twelve, where he was meeting with a small group of fundraisers, Mourning explained that no child is a lost cause, no matter how troubled or impoverished. “If a child is not showing up to school we find out why. We knock on their doors. Maybe he doesn’t have clean clothes or a bed to sleep in. We resolve it.” At least one day a month there are meetings with parents. “We say this is where your child is – this is where your child needs to be. And this is how we’re getting there. Now what do you need from us?” Among Mourning’s favorite OYC programs are “exposure trips,” when children venture to Miami’s beaches and ballgames. He says it’s commonplace to meet lifelong Miamians who have never seen the ocean or “even been in an elevator.” “When there’s no one in your life saying, you deserve a trip to the beach – you feel as if it’s not for me. Nobody ever introduced them to these parts of life. We change that. What they see, they’ll be.” —Deborah Wilker

30 YEARS Levinson Jewelers hasn’t always been based in a beautiful 8,000-square-foot store on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. The firm’s beginnings 30 years ago were much more modest. In October 1983, Mark and Robin Levinson launched their jewelry business in an 8-foot-long booth at the South Florida Jewelry Exchange in Plantation. Previously, Robin had been the leading fine jewelry salesperson at Neiman Marcus, and Mark, whose father and grandfather were in the diamond business, was a purchaser of estate jewelry. “Robin wanted me to come join her as a partner, and we didn’t have any money — we were trying to make our way because we had just gotten married,” Mark recalls. “Now we’re more than 30-year partners in life and 30 years in business.” About two years after the Levinsons launched their jewelry business, most of the other 40 jewelers in the exchange had either moved or gone out of business. So they asked the landlord if they could build a little store, about 1,200 square feet, in the space. They kept growing through the years and ultimately became the anchor of the Plantation shopping center that was their home. In 2009, Levinson Jewelers relocated its Plantation store to Las Olas Boulevard, to a stunning retail space that features

What is your Wish?

Rosh Hashanah is the World’s Birthday.

F

rom the first bite of the juicy apple dipped into the sweet honey, our traditions of Rosh Hashanah begins. Family and friends help us ring in the New Year as we take stock of our past actions with a renewed hope for the coming months. Rosh Hashanah is also the celebration of the world’s birthday. So, make a wish on behalf of all those who are hungry, homeless or on the verge of despair. Ask for others to be generous so our food pantries can be stocked. Hope that those who are in dire need of emergency assistance, receive help, crisis counseling and financial support. Encourage your neighbors to think about how every member of our community should have the opportunity to participate in Jewish experiences, from preschools to summer camps. How children with special needs should be embraced, not ostracized. This Rosh Hashanah, you have the power to make all those wishes come true. Your gift to the Jewish Federation is the promise that whenever a Jew is in need, anywhere in the world, they can count on the Jewish community. And this year, when you reflect — be assured that your good deed of tzedakah has inscribed you into the book of life.

ON THE SHORE rare high-end gems, luxury jewelry, watches and one-of-akind statement pieces. Today, the Levinsons continue to expand. They’re in the process of opening an office in Colorado, where they also have a following; and they continue to work with numerous charitable organizations. They also have some exciting events planned for October and November to celebrate the anniversary, but those are still under wraps right now. “To have a partner, a wife, a best friend and on and on for 30 years is amazing,” Mark says. “But to enjoy it all and be married and then have a business that has made a difference in the community — that’s pretty nice.” —Robyn A. Friedman

Founded in 1938 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the March of Dimes was originally dedicated to fighting polio, with which FDR was afflicted. The organization funded the development of the Salk and Sabin vaccines, but after conquering polio, it shifted its focus to preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. From the development of a screening test for PKU (phenylketonuria) to surfactant and nitric oxide therapies, to bone marrow transplants to the prenatal diagnosis of sickle cell anemia, March of Dimes-funded research has saved the lives of thousands of babies. “The March of Dimes affects everyone because we are working to have healthier babies, to fight prematurity and birth defects,” says Albert Fils, Broward Division Board Chair of the March of Dimes. “So every mother who has a healthy baby has been touched by March of Dimes.” Although Fils said that the anniversary will be celebrated all year on an ongoing basis, there will be special celebrations locally on Sept. 18 at the Signature Chefs Auction in Fort Lauderdale and on Dec. 13 at the Women of Distinction event at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. “In 75 years, the March of Dimes has done so many pivotal things in our community and the world that we would not be where we are had it not been for their research,” Moberg says. “People need to know that.”

You only think there’s nothing on 75 years Joyce Moberg owes her daughters’ health — and perhaps their very lives — to the March of Dimes. The Deerfield Beach mom, who serves as the 2013 Broward County Family Ambassador for the organization, delivered her identical twin daughters, Faith and Hope, prematurely, at just 26 weeks. They spent over four months in the neonatal intensive care unit, but today are happy, healthy six year olds. “I truly feel that if it wasn’t for the grace of God and the work of the March of Dimes, my kids would not be here,” Moberg says. It wasn’t until after the girls were born, when Moberg was recruited to do a March of Dimes walk, that she realized just how much the organization had effected her children. And she’s not the only one. About 4 million babies are born each year in the United States, and the March of Dimes has helped each every one through research, education, vaccines and other breakthroughs in medicine. 38

Our ongoing discoveries in the genre of international crime series comes by way of Copenhagen. The award-winning Danish TV series The Eagle: A Crime Odyssey has all the addictive elements: an appealing lead detective, nicknamed “The Eagle”; a super-smart, eclectic group of investigators; and the fact that it ranges across Europe cinematically in its three seasons: from Denmark on to Norway, Sweden, Russia, Germany, even Iceland. ON THE MONEY

AT YOUR SERVICE Banks are making life easier for

customers in an effort to win back your interest. (Take that as you will.) Lately, just the mention of the word “bank” tends to elicit a cringe from anyone who doesn’t keep all his or her cash under a mattress. After all we’ve been through in the past few years with banks, many South Floridians have abandoned the big ones and run for the more personal service they feel they get from using credit unions. This hasn’t gone unaddressed by the very banks many of us have chosen to shun; in response to the exodus, most have implemented services for their customers designed to lure us back in and make our lives easier. Here are some of those services worth checking out.

MOBILE DEPOSIT. If you don’t have direct deposit, or if you receive checks by mail on different days of the month but hate having to run to the bank several times a week, this is a godsend. Chase QuickDeposit allows customers to deposit checks from their smart phone or iPad; all you have to do is take a picture of both sides of your endorsed check with your camera (follow the on-screen instructions), click the information on the verification screen and the bank confirms that it’s been processed. In addition to eliminating the need to go to the bank, it removes the hassle of deposit slips, waiting in lines and fussing with ATM machines — plus it’s free. Bank of America and Wells Fargo also offer mobile check deposit services (caveat: funds aren’t always available for immediate withdrawal).

OVERDRAFT PROTECTION. This is always worth having because anyone can overdraw an account. It allows you to link your checking account to a second account, such as a savings, from which funds will be withdrawn to cover the overdraft (you can also link it to another checking account, credit card or line of credit). There’s no cost for the service at most major banks, and some allow you to overdraw your account either at a point FREE MOBILE BANKING APPS. These are free, allow you to of purchase or ATM even without overdraft protection; however, see your balances, review transaction histories, check due dates if you don’t make good within 24 hours, there is usually an for credit cards, and find branches nearby and provides contact overdraft fee assessed of between $30 and $35. numbers, among other things. Some banks even allow you to sign up for text alerts when your balance dips below a certain level so — Lori Capullo you can transfer money. And most banks make these available for iPhones, BlackBerrys, iPads, and iPod Touch devices — some even offer them for plain old cell phones. (Imagine!) LIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Is there anything more frustrating than having a banking emergency (unidentified charges on your account, for example) and frantically calling the bank only to become mired in button-pushing oblivion? TD Bank, Wells Fargo and Citi, among others, all offer live customer service 24/7, so you don’t have to go to bed at night stressing about the fact that no one can help you until morning.

M

ore and more people from the Baby Boomer generation are turning 65 years of age in 2013. For them, and millions of other seniors, Medicare is an essential part of their healthcare plan. But the road to healthcare security can be a rough one, filled with potholes of frustration and misunderstanding, as people search for the answer to the question of “what is best for me?” Independent agent Robert Holzman, president of Robert Holzman, P.A., can help. “When a person nears 65, he or she is inundated with Medicare information from multiple insurance carriers, and that’s where I come in,” he says. “I want people to understand the process; I want to educate them about what can be done to secure their future wellbeing — and to choose the plan that is most appropriate.” He can discuss the benefits of Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage (United Healthcare and United American), long-term care, annuities and life insurance — but most importantly, he’s an agent that provides reliable information so clients enjoy peace of mind in their senior years. A health insurance veteran of 42 years, Holzman understands the ever-changing world of health care in America. He understands the challenging importance of long-term care for seniors — a major concern in today’s insurance industry. “Without a doubt, insured home health care options are — or should be — a priority on everyone’s medical checklist,” he says. “I specialize in long-term care insurance, so people can preserve their assets in the wake of a catastrophic illness.” Long-term care policies may be difficult to obtain because insurance companies know the downside of how much extended payouts to subscribers will affect their bottom line. “I can help get clients a better premium, and I can help couples in their 40s and 50s plan for the future,” he says. “The younger one is, the less the premium they pay — and that premium remains basically the same for the

life of the policy. Many younger people are taking advantage of that option.” It’s important to remember that after a hospital stay, there may be an extended period of physician-prescribed home care requiring the services of an R.N., a therapist, home health aide or a caregiver. Victims of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer or other chronic conditions may need assistance in the basic daily necessities of dressing, eating, going to the bathroom and other types of daily care. “Robert Holzman, P.A. has plans for all those situations,” says the firm’s president. “I’ve seen people drain their bank accounts and sell their homes just to cover the cost of long-term care.” Robert Holzman, P.A. provides outstanding home care plans that do not require being in the hospital or a nursing home to collect benefits. The firm has access to many of the major A-plus or A-rated companies that offer long-term care plans, and he can help you choose the policy that will provide the best benefits. “A lot of clients depend on me to provide, or recommend, home health agencies,” Holzman says. “I’m very service oriented, and that’s been the foundation of my business, and one of the reasons why I have over 1,200 clients.” The insurance industry is unique in that agents are challenged with the task of dealing with people of different mindsets, different personalities and different agendas. The really good ones, like Robert Holzman, are capable of pinpointing the exact coverage a person needs. “I would not recommend anything that I would not use myself,” he says. “I am happy to provide in-home consultations and answer any and all questions potential clients may have.”

Herschthal Practice goes ‘global’ with approach to total skin care By Larry Schwingel

F

rom the moment we enter the world, an aging process begins, and for about 30 years we are granted a reprieve. But, as middle age approaches, visible facial lines and signs of skin damage begin to surface. As the years go by, the battle to reverse the inevitable begins. The good news is that with today’s enhanced technology, you can gain an edge in the battle against aging. That edge is at The Herschthal Practice in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, where the father-daughter team of top dermatologists, Drs. David and Jordana Herschthal, see things differently. The difference is in their “global” approach to total skin care. “Aging doesn’t only affect isolated parts of your face, so why should your treatment?” asks Jordana Herschthal, M.D. “Our global approach to care is an evaluation of the face’s entire condition, with a focus on the aesthetic components of tightening, revolumizing, relaxing and resurfacing. We call it TR3.” Comprehensive services At The Herschthal Practice, patients can choose from a comprehensive list of services. Tightening devices include Thermage (radiofrequency) and Ulthera (ultrasound energy) to lift, tone and tighten the skin around the jawline, neck and brow. Revolumizing focal loss of facial fat pads includes the dermal fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse and Belotero), while global fillers (Sculptra) restore the overall architecture of the face. To relax overactive facial expression lines, neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) are used. Resurfacing, toning and tightening the outer layers of the skin is achieved with lasers and chemical peels. “The combination of these procedures is a global approach to skin care, one that is much more beneficial than isolated treatments,” says Dr. David Herschthal. The latest technology Two of the newest treatments offered include Ultherapy® and Coolsculpting®. Ultherapy is an FDA-approved non-invasive procedure that uses ultrasound energy and the body’s natural healing process to lift, tone and tighten loose skin on the brow, neck and under the chin. Ultrasound stimulates the skin’s deep structural support layers, including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift, to produce collagen without downtime or scars. Coolsculpting is FDA-approved for fat/bulge reduction. The procedure freezes targeted areas of fat, naturally and permanently eliminating fat cells without downtime, or disturbing the outside layers of the skin.

Drs. David and Jordana Herschthal are ready to meet your dermatology and aesthetic needs.

CS_Sep_Digital-Flatplan-Live.indd 56

A unique practice The Herschthal Practice is unique in that the fatherdaughter duo provides patients with both a male and female perspective, not mutually exclusive to gender. Jordana may see a female patient for a skin cancer check, but that patient may want to see her father for a specific procedure, or vice versa. “There’s a lot of cross-over, and it enhances both the patient and doctor experience,” she says. “Patient relationships are very important to us, and we love to educate our patients. Being involved in every detail of their healthcare plan grows trust and a long-term commitment.”

The Herschthal Practice team is committed to patient service and care.

David Herschthal, M.D., is board-certified and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Dermatology. Founder of the practice, his expertise is in skin cancer care, aesthetic procedures and laser surgery. Jordana Herschthal, M.D., board-certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, specializes in general dermatology and aesthetic procedures — and has added dermatologic surgery and Mohs surgery to the practice. Both Drs. David and Jordana Herschthal have the privilege of teaching and being on staff at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Department of Dermatology. One stop for all your skincare needs The specialists at The Herschthal Practice pride themselves on being very hands-on, and providing a personal touch that helps build long-term relationships. “We have patients that have been coming to us for 30 years or more,” says Dr. Jordana Herschthal. “Most are ‘lifers,’ and I don’t know of any other specialty practice that can make that statement.” Her father has had a tremendous impact on her professional life. “He always encourages change, and is open to every suggestion that I’ve made,” she says. “He appreciates the fresh ideas I bring to the table, and I appreciate his wisdom and experience. There’s nothing better professionally than enjoying your work.” Growing up, she admired her dad’s ability to work long hours, yet still find time for his family. “He was there for every dinner and all of my important childhood events,” says Jordana. “I saw how excited he was about his work, and as I progressed through medical school, I realized dermatology would be a great fit for my personality. Dermatology as a specialty is not limited by age or gender, can provide medical, surgical, and aesthetic procedures, and is constantly evolving.” SkinMedica product line Highly recommended, and supported by excellent clinical trials, SkinMedica products address three critical processes to optimize skin care: grow new collagen, repair damaged skin cells and protect existing cells from further damage. A distributor of SkinMedica skin care products, The Herschthal Practice, 7280 W. Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton and 7421 N. University Drive, Fort Lauderdale, is truly a one-stop practice for all your dermatologic needs. The practice is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. David Y. Globerman, M.D. provides superior cosmetic procedures to fight aging By Larry Schwingel

L

et’s face it. Our face leaves a lasting impression, but with age, the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, sagging skin and other imperfections are natural occurrences. The good news is that with today’s aesthetic advances in facial rejuvenation, your face doesn’t have to reveal your age. Board-certified plastic surgeon David Globerman Ph.D, M.D., offers a full range of procedures to meet every patient’s cosmetic need. From the S-Lift mini-face lift and full face lifts, to rhinoplasty, eyelifts, liposuction, tummy tucks, breast augmentation, Botox and state-ofthe-art dermal fillers, the specialist in Hollywood, helps patients look better, feel better and achieve a higher level of social confidence. S-Lift benefits The S-Lift mini-face lift is tailor made to yield nonsurgical looking results. It is a great procedure for patients that want smaller incisions and a faster recovery. The S-Lift is a “hidden scar” facelift designed to rejuvenate the neck, jowls and face. Compared to traditional facelifts, it’s less invasive, there are fewer potential complications, and recovery time is much faster. “The Baby Boomer generation was brought up with the idea that a total face lift is the only way to go, but that’s not the case with our new technology,” says Dr. Globerman. “Patients do not want a ‘pulled-back” look, they want a natural look — and that’s the beauty of the S-Lift. That result can be achieved.” As we get older, our skin gets thinner and loses elasticity, and droops due to gravity. “If in good health, no one is too old for an S-Lift, but by starting a cosmetic program in the early stages, minor deficiencies can easily be handled, averting a more costly procedure,” says Dr. Globerman. The procedure Operating on one side of the face at a time, a narrow S-shaped section of skin is lifted in an area just in front of and behind the ear. Tissues are repositioned, any excess fat is removed, and fine sutures are used to close the incisions. The entire procedure takes 90 minutes, or less. The S-Lift may last up to five years, and can make a huge difference in the aging process.

David Y. Globerman, M.D.

CS_Sep_Digital-Flatplan-Live.indd 60

The procedure is done in Dr. Globerman’s office under local anesthesia, and patients experience very little swelling or bruising. Within a very short time, they are ready to resume normal activities. If you want to feel and look younger – and stay ahead of the aging process, the S-lift is definitely a procedure to consider.

Botox For many years Botox has been a standard procedure for cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists. The injections weaken facial muscles, helping wrinkles to fade. “If you have a frown line from brow to brow, eventually a significant crease will develop,” says Dr. Globerman. “When the muscle is weakened, the crease relaxes and becomes more textured and smooth.” This procedure lasts three months — with maintenance required to achieve a longer lasting, more youthful appearance. Botox injections remain one of the most requested treatments for frown lines, forehead creases and “crow’s feet.” Dr. Globerman also uses this treatment to care for corners around the mouth that turn downward and create what he refers to a “sad” appearance. Dermal Fillers Juvederm is a dermal filler, used to treat deep smile lines, dimples, creases, acne scars, cheek depressions and facial scars. “Juvederm injections contain hyaluronic acid in the form of a clear gel,” says Dr. Globerman. “It adds volume to lift lips, wrinkles or facial folds: it’s safe and effective and is very effective in helping postpone the need for a face- or brow-lift.” Radiesse and Sculptra are additional fillers available at the office of Dr. Globerman. “Sculptra is a stimulatory filler, and the injections stimulate collagen to form in the areas of concern,” says the specialist. “Radiesse is a volumizing filler that works immediately with instant results. Once injected into the targeted area, it will significantly diminish signs of aging.” Sculptra acts as a “scaffold” under the skin, providing structure as it stimulates a person’s own natural collagen growth. “The production of natural collagen continues for several months beyond the initial effect of the Sculptra injection,” says Dr. Globerman. “Best of all, the natural results are clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients, which means more value from each treatment, and long-lasting results.” Free consultations Dr. Globerman has a keen interest in each patient. His skill, friendly manner and genuine concern for patients, earned him an outstanding reputation as one of the area’s premier cosmetic surgeons. The office of Dr. David Y. Globerman is at 3700 Washington St., Suite 208, Hollywood. For a free consultation, call (954) 987-0222.

ost people like their face; they just don’t like the changes they see due to aging. There are multiple facial rejuvenation procedures available today, and a popular choice is the deep plane facelift — a specialty of leading facial plastic surgeon Jacob D. Steiger, M.D. of Steiger Facial Plastic Surgery, 1001 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton. “The deep plane lift is an outstanding procedure; it makes people look like themselves, just a younger version,” says the double-board-certified, Ivy-League-trained specialist. “The results are predictable and consistent for a more natural-looking, youthful appearance.” The three things women want most are to look natural, have the best possible result and have it last a long time. The deep plane procedure meets those criteria, and can last up to 15 years, depending upon a patient’s age. The procedure “Over time, facial skin loosens and begins to sag, but the aging process is far from one-dimensional; it involves the skin, muscles, fat and bone,” says Dr. Steiger. The key to a deep plane lift is manipulating underlying facial muscles, and repositioning facial ligaments to restore the face to its original, natural position —without any pulling or tension on the surface of the skin. “This procedure is just one of many designed with the singular purpose of making a patient look better while keeping it natural,” says Dr. Steiger. Patient Becca Hillman of Boca Raton was in search of the most natural look possible, and expressed to the facial cosmetic surgery expert the need for improvements to her jowls and neck. “I didn’t want to look 25; I didn’t want to look 40,” she said. “I just wanted to look the best I could, within the framework of the vision I had, of what I thought I should look like. This procedure made that possible.” Patients undergoing a deep plane procedure will experience minimal post-operative discomfort, but rarely is there any significant pain — and that’s a real upside. The normal recovery time is only 10 to 14 days, depending upon the age of the patient. Dr. Steiger performs the surgery under a twilight anesthesia. Better technology…newer procedures The aesthetic procedures available today are much different from those available even a decade ago. With each passing year, new enhancements are unveiled. “The deep plane lift is just one of a myriad of procedures that I can use to enhance a patient’s appearance. Today, it’s a new and different paradigm,” notes the specialist.

CS_Sep_Digital-Flatplan-Live.indd 62

Additional procedures performed at Steiger Facial Plastic Surgery include fat transfers, eyelid surgery, laser therapy, peels, rhinoplasty, chin implants, lip augmentation, skin resurfacing, dermabrasion and minimally invasive procedures such as Botox®, Dysport® and dermal fillers. Fat transfer and laser therapy One of the aspects of youth is a full, heart-shaped face — a fat transfer procedure can restore that fullness. Fat can be taken from the thigh or belly, and injected back into the face. “We’re taking fat from where it’s not wanted, and restoring it to where it’s needed,” says Dr. Steiger. “The facial fat transfer is an innovative procedure that is used to complement a facelift, but can also be performed as a stand alone procedure.” South Floridians know how harsh the sun can be, and the damage it can cause to the skin. As pigmentation issues develop, they can easily be taken care of via laser skin rejuvenation. “Laser peels enhance a person’s overall look, and are an excellent modality for tightening and improving the complexion,” says Dr. Steiger. From age 30 to 50, facial ligaments become lax and the skin begins to sag. The end result is a hollow, worn-out-looking appearance that results in a rectangular-shape facial appearance. Sunken jowls, sagging cheekbones and flabbiness around the neckline can now be inverted through the aesthetic procedures available at Steiger Facial Plastic Surgery.“I can restore a fuller, more natural-looking facial appearance,” says Dr. Steiger. “It’s not just about filling folds; it’s about re-shaping a patient’s entire face, restoring their youthful appearance,” he says. “The technique must fit the patient, not the other way around.” Outstanding facility Dr. Steiger treats patients from around the world, and is one of only a handful of physicians in South Florida dedicated solely to plastic surgery of the face and nose. He has practiced his specialty in Boca Raton/Delray Beach for seven years, and his newly constructed 5,000-squarefoot-facility is state of the art. “Its spacious layout is very conducive to patient comfort and privacy,” he says. “The building was built solely for the purpose of facial plastic procedures, and is one of the most modern in South Florida.” Conveniently located on Federal Highway, south of Glades Road, Steiger Facial Plastic Surgery is a one-ofa-kind facility. He is a specialist in hair restoration, with 39 years in the industry. Chuck Alfieri offers a variety of innovative solutions for people with thinning hair or hair loss. An innovative alternative to chemotherapy uses electric fields to disrupt tumor growth By Nancy McVicar

T

he latest treatment for the most aggressive form of brain cancer is so new and so gentle on the patient that some people still consider it science fiction, says Dr. Jose Valerio, a neurosurgeon at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston. The therapy, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, sends painless electric fields into the brain to disrupt the rapid cell division exhibited by cancer cells resulting in the death of those cells without harming healthy tissue. Valerio has seen the treatment prolong the lives of patients who had the standard treatment for glioblastoma (also called GBM) – surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation – who then had a recurrence of the tumor. Some patients who have a recurrence of the disease are opting to take the new treatment called TTF (Tumor-Treating Fields) therapy instead of more chemotherapy, which can affect the entire body, not just the tumor. “We have patients with close to one-year survival with this treatment,” Valerio says, “and their quality of life is not affected because there are no side effects.” The treatment was developed by Novocure, headquartered in the British Isle of Jersey. Novocure’s U.S. operations are based in Portsmouth, N.H., and the company has a research facility in Haifa, Israel. Valerio says the treatment was tested first on cancer cells in the lab and then in animals before clinical trials began in brain tumor patients. Results of the human studies published in the European Journal of Cancer showed TTF produced outcomes comparable to chemotherapy but with a better quality of life. In January, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the world’s 21 leading cancer centers, added TTF Therapy to its clinical practice guidelines for treatment of brain tumors and other central nervous system cancers. Use of the treatment is expanding across the country and two other centers in South Florida – the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Neurological Associates of South Florida, Boca Raton, now offer it. The treatment involves shaving the patient’s head

and using insulated transducer arrays placed on the skin in the region surrounding the tumor. “We do an MRI and a 3D reconstruction of where the brain tumor is, then do a mapping to find the best place to place the fields in the skull,” says Valerio of Cleveland Clinic Florida. The patient wears the device, which is attached to an external battery pack, 18 hours a day. The fields can be changed every 72 to 96 hours. They affect only the cancer cells attempting to divide and do not stimulate nerves or muscle or heat the tissue. “Only 22 percent of any pill you take goes to the treatment, but with this, you have the full treatment without any side effects,” Valerio says. About 10,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with glioblastoma each year, and survival rates are not good. The median survival from the time of diagnosis is 15 months, according to the National Institutes of Health. Researchers continue to look for better treatments including the use of vaccines, and research refining the use of electric fields also is continuing. TTF therapy is also being tried as another treatment option for both metastatic breast cancer and lung cancer, Valerio says.

WHAT WILL THE NEIGHBORS THINK? Inside the quiet, hardworking lives of Palm Beach’s newest power couple: For Howard Stern and his wife, Beth, it’s “lights out at 8 p.m.” – they promise. By Deborah Wilker

H

oward Stern has spent many a radio hour professing his love for Florida. The weather. The air. The lack of chaos (compared to New York, anyway). He’s mused often about retiring here or continuing his morning radio show from here. Of course booking top celebrity guests would be something of a hassle – but such details are hardly worth pondering at this point, right? As it turns out, Howard Stern and his wife, Beth, are indeed becoming Floridians – sooner rather than later. Earlier this year they purchased an oceanfront mansion in Palm Beach, which they plan to live in part time for now – and full time later on. Photography by Howard Stern

utomobiles are, to borrow a phrase from writer Diane Ackerman, “sense-luscious.” Open the door to a new Corvette Stingray ($51,000) and inhale the aroma of, well, newness. Run your hands over the smooth steering wheel and soft leather seats. Gaze out the windshield at the Stingray’s sensual lines. Push the ignition button and listen to the V8 purr. Can’t you just taste the thrill that awaits? According to studies reported in The New York Times, “Americans are buying fewer cars, driving less and getting fewer licenses as each

year goes by.” Maybe. But studies can be wrong. Besides, we prefer anecdotal evidence, and if you peek at the 2014 glittering gems in South Florida’s automobile showrooms you’d have to agree that America’s love affair with the car is alive and well. The thought of driving, say, a Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC ($51,900) is right up there with winning an Oscar for Best Actress or hitting a home run to win Game 7 of the World Series. There’s nothing quite like it. Cars are our chariots of pleasure. We drive them – and they drive us. J.D. Salinger, famously expressing his disdain for the automobile,

HOW TO GET THE DEAL Shopping for a car? Want a good deal? One well-known auto dealer says it’s all about walking into the showroom with confidence. “Always know exactly what you’re looking for before you get here,” says Rita Case, Vice President of Rick Case Automotive. In other words, don’t waffle. If you’ve come to look at SUVs, stick with SUVs. Print out specs and prices at home and take them with you. “And always walk in with confidence.” Her advice: • Decide on a fair price before you leave home, and make as many smaller decisions as possible – including interior and exterior colors, trim packages and upgrades. • If you’re trading in a current car, commit its value and loan payoff to memory. • If you’re financing, know exactly how much you can spend each month. • Familiarize yourself with local dealerships – their proximity to home and work, and which extras could seduce you. The Case dealerships (see rickcase.com for locations), for example, double every manufacturer’s warranty, and provide free car washes for life. But she says for many buyers, price will always be the key factor. Know which perks make sense for you.

With its yellow-andblack paint job, the GSR looks like a bumblebee with a sweet sting. OK, yes, cars clog our streets and highways. They’re a huge contributor – though less than

they once were – to pollution and global warming. But they also liberate us. They carry us through verdant valleys and to the peaks of pristine mountaintops. Lower the top of a Chrysler 200S Convertible ($33,195) and cruise along the ocean on A1A at dusk. How sense-luscious would that be?

RESOURCES With all these luscious options, few people aside from J.D. Salinger would choose a return to the days of the horseless carriage. But don’t take our word for it. Open the door on one of the cars mentioned here or dozens of other 2014 models in South Florida’s showrooms and let the five senses take you on the ride of a lifetime. Roger Dean Chevrolet 2235 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach, 561-594-1478. Mercedes-Benz of Fort Lauderdale 2411 S. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, 954-949-0623.

Audi Q7 SUV ($47,700) If you ou trul truly want to state your environmental bona fides, ask to test drive the groundbreaking BMW i3 Electric ($41,350). “The BMW i3,” trumpets its manufacturer, “heralds the dawn of a new era for individual mobility.” Don’t knock it until you drive it. The case could be made for this being the golden age of the modern chariot. Have there ever been more choices for what ferries us around town for work or fun? For example, one vehicle that appeals to all the senses and just about every member of the family is the Audi Q7 SUV ($47,700). The pick of the German automaker’s lineup for large families accommodates up to seven people, and stylishly so. Is an SUV too conservative for your tastes? Then maybe you should wrap yourself in the luxury of a Hyundai Equus ($61,000). The surround-sound audio system alone is worth the price of admission, and rear-seat passengers will appreciate an entertainment system with dual nine-inch monitors. ●

JAGUAR’S NEW F-TYPE IT'S A BLAST. LITERALLY

T

o test drive the new Jaguar F-Type V8 S is to tempt disappointment. The moment you push the start button, you know you’re going to be disappointed to stop. Until then, Jaguar’s first two-seater in 40 years does not disappoint. It’s a blast, really. And literally. Drop the top, paddle into manual, flip on the active exhaust, take aim at the venerable Henry E. Kinney Tunnel in Fort Lauderdale, and the 5.0 liter V8 495 hp engine will snap, crackle and pop tiles off the walls. At least that’s what it sounds like. (Was moving too fast to actually confirm). You might think you shouldn’t drive this car through some neighborhoods, because it will wake the neighbors. You might think you shouldn’t drive this car through other neighborhoods, because the neighbors will think you’re coming in packing. Either setting, no problem. Put the top up, switch to dynamic drive, flip off the active exhaust, and you’re a stealth fighter in a blur of Salsa Red, Polaris White, Indigo Blue. A car for every road, a setting on the console for every setting. This is a reboot for the brand, and definitely not your Austin Powers’ Jag. For a 2014 super car, suitable for secret agents of any stripe, the F-Type is stunningly easy to operate. (Even for, ahem, complete agents in training). You want eight speeds fast, you got ’em right where the stick shift should be. You want to drop the temperature, turn the dial with easy-to-read digital numbers. You want to crank Terry Gross on Fresh Air? (Wait a minute, what kind of secret agent are you?) Adjust the volume control on the steering wheel and 10 speakers provide Terry in crystal-clear sound. (A 12-speaker option would be overkill here). Some things you don’t even have to operate on your own (unless you really want to). The rear spoiler automatically rises at 60 mph and retracts below 40. The door hinges retract above 5 mph. The air vents fold themselves down when

the A/C is off. The Nespresso machine knows whether you want a single or double, and fills your cup accordingly right there in the cup holder. Wait, I may have just made that part up. (Was moving too fast to confirm). Speaking of speed, Jaguar places the F-Type V8 S .1 second faster than a Porsche 911 Cabriolet S, .3 seconds faster than a Mercedes-Benz SL 550 and .4 seconds faster than a 911 Cabriolet – but, at MSRP $92,000, it’s considerably less money than the competition. More snap, crackle and pop for the buck. At the valet stand at the Boca Raton Resort & Club – my personal test track for car aesthetics – the valet practically fell off the curb when I nosed the F-Type through the pillared arches of the porte cochere. “Is this the new Jaguar?’’ he breathed. “Yes,” I said. “Take good care of it for me?” I’d been here on other test drives, with cars that made less of an impression with the valet. Not now. “I’m going to park it right out front,” he said. I handed him the fob, and watched him park it next to Ferraris, Bentleys and the other super cars of the porte cochere. Stopping it anywhere else would have been a disappointment. — Mark Gauert 2014 Jaguar F-Type V8 S (5.0 liter, 495 hp), $92,000. (Price as tested, $103,475). F-Type V6, (3.0 liter, 332 hp), $69,000; and F-Type V6 S (3.0 liter, 339 hp), $81,000. From Warren Henry Jaguar, 20800 NW Second Ave., Miami, 305-690-6006. athrooms and powder rooms have undergone extreme makeovers. Function, technology and design have married. The new bathroom is comfortable, luxurious and stylish. The powder room has become a space to make a strong statement. Think sculptural tubs for soaking, ceramic tile with texture or the look of exquisite stone, artistic sinks and hardware that looks like fine jewelry. PHOTO: OLLYY design.indd 83

The Big Bathroom Many of us dream of a big bathroom with plenty of room for storage, a large shower and a soaking tub, but making a large space look elegant can be a challenge unless the designer adds architectural magic. Marc Thee, a member of Architectural Digest’s Top 100 designers and architects, transformed a 365-square-foot rectangular bathroom in east Boca Raton into a feminine, graceful oval with ceiling coffers that follow the redesigned shape of the room. The custom door and cabinets are radius cut to follow the oval shape. The oval theme was repeated in the nickel sconces, the ottoman, details on the cabinetry and the windows Thee created on either side of the soaking tub. “When you have such a strong architectural detail, we look to repeat it,” he says. “It is the hook, the repetition in a subtle way. People don’t know why the space feels good. It makes everything cohesive and adds to the flow and adds to the relaxation factor.” 84

Safe Children’s Bathrooms Designers have a lot more freedom to be whimsical in a child’s bathroom, but it has to be safe as well as user friendly. Kendall Marcelle, a Dania Beach designer, kept these aspects in mind when she enlarged a bathroom for girls ages three, five, seven and nine in a Hallandale Beach home. The counter was dropped for easier access and to accommodate a 44-inch trough sink. The girls love butterflies and Marcelle carried the theme from the sconces to the hand-painted images on the walls. The sink is acrylic and there is plenty of room for them to wash together. The countertop is quartz and the pair of brushed faucets is chrome so mom doesn’t have to worry about water spots. Tile floors are non-skid. “Practicality is important for the kids,” she says. “They are always at the sink and always leaving water around the sinks. You have to make it kid friendly and the materials have to be conducive to their water needs.”

HOW TO GET THE LOOK AT HOME By Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub

SELECTING OPTIONS FOR A BATHROOM DESIGN CAN BE CONFUSING UNLESS YOU DO SOME RESEARCH TO NARROW YOUR CHOICES. HERE ARE SOME TO CONSIDER. Fine furniture Gone are the days when a vanity had to be a simple wood or laminate cabinet. These days the offerings are as elegant as a fine piece of furniture, such as this Santa Cruz vanity with matching threepanel mirror. It features a single basin console with chrome plated base and glass shelf, two operable doors of American maple and a quartz top. Faucets and hardware are separate. Suggested retail is $4,648 for the vanity and $699 for the mirror. Available at Allied Kitchen & Bath, 616 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-564-1611, alliedkitchenandbath.com.

Perfect Powder Rooms Even if you don’t want to makeover your master bath just yet, the powder room is a good place to experiment with new materials. “They are small spaces that are meant to be shown to visitors,” says Coral Gables designer Jennifer Corredor. “You want to make sure they make a statement. They are small spaces and you want the illusion of making everything look larger than it is without too much clutter.” One of her creative spaces is a powder room on Williams Island. An oval mirror is perched above a space-saving glass cylindrical sink from Vitra lighted by an overhead high hat and a fixture by Philippe Starck for FLOS. A door with a frosted glass panel allows additional light into the room. A granite wall provides drama and is echoed by a granite circular inset on the tile floor. A powder room she designed in Bal Harbour features a wedgelike sink from Hastings and a Philippe Starck faucet. The walls are clad with glass pebbles and white mosaic tiles. “My advice is always about space in a powder room,” she says. “Try to use colors and tones that are light to make it appear more open.” Opposite page: A small powder room, like this one on Williams Island by Jennifer Corredor, features a space-saving glass sink and a frosted panel on the door. Photography by Daniel Newcomb This page: Jennifer Corredor perked up this powder room in Bal Harbour with walls covered in glass pebbles and white mosaic tile. Photography by Daniel Newcomb

One of the popular options in upscale bathrooms is the sculptural soaking tub. This iconic Sabbia tub designed by Naoto Fukasawa fits the trend perfectly. It is constructed of Cristalplant, a solid surface material that is non-porous and easy to clean. Suggested retail is $12,665. Available at Boffi Studio Miami, 3800 NE Second Ave., Miami, 305-571-8216, boffistudiomiami.com.

Emerald elegance One of the best ways to enhance a bathroom is with beautiful glass tiles to accent a single wall. Margot, a jewel glass water jet mosaic designed by Sara Baldwin for New Ravenna Mosaics, is created in a leaf pattern that fits perfectly into South Florida’s tropical style. Installations are custom. Available at Ceramic Matrix, 3308 W. 45th St., West Palm Beach, 561-681-6810, and 1250 Wallace Drive Suite N, Delray Beach, 561-353-1449; Earth Elements, 3000 N. Lovely Lalique There is no limit to the glam factor, especially in powder rooms, where guests are sure to visit even if you don’t do house tours. Lalique, a company known for its sculpture of fine crystal, has teamed with atelier THG to create crystal bath fixtures. Papillon’s features two elegant butterflies (starting at $6,259). Naiade plays delicate crystal images of a mythical woman against gold finished handles (starting at $4,645). Available at Next Plumbing Supply, 1839 Old Okeechobee Road, West Palm Beach, 561-689-9060, 15751 SW 41 St., Suite 800., Davie, 954-217-8200 and 710 S. Beautiful bling Hardware has become more decorative over the years, but Edgar Berebi has taken the category to a level worthy of Tiffany’s. The collection deserves the moniker “jewelry for the home.” Each piece is created in 24-kt. gold plate or burnished silver. Some, like the Waldorf Collection shown here, are also encrusted with Swarovski crystals. Can you imagine these as earrings and bracelets? Prices upon request. Available at Allied Kitchen & Bath, 616 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-564-1611, alliedkitchenandbath.com.

Modern magic The Aqua Décor Estrella Pedestal sink features a rectangular pedestal design with a Euro-style finish and a single-hole faucet. Sculptural Settings Designers have more interesting choices with bathtubs that look like sculptures and ceramic walls that have three-dimensional artistic affects. Certified kitchen designer Andrew Fischman used an egg-shaped Aquabrass soaking tub and a wave wall created by large format 3-D tile from Porcelanosa in a master bathroom in Coral Ridge. “When you find something like this tile, it becomes an inspiration piece,” he says. “It becomes the main focus and you adapt around it.” Fischman says soaking tubs are becoming more popular as clients seek tranquility in a bathroom that noisy whirlpool jets don’t provide. But more emphasis is also being placed on luxury showers. An Aging in Place Specialist, he designed this shower as barrier free to allow older people easier access. Kathryn Carbone, a Delray Beach designer, also used 3-D porcelain tile from Porcelanosa in the powder room of a Boca Raton oceanfront condo. More glam comes from a frosted vessel sink from Ronbow and jewelry like drawer pulls encrusted with Swarovski crystals from Miller’s Fine Decorative Hardware. “They wanted a very clean modern look, but she also wanted to have her glamour moments that she could show off to friends,” Carbone says. The 10-by-16 foot master bathroom also includes other trends such

BRIGHT NIGHTS If you only know Boca Raton by day, you don’t really know Boca

here’s a sea of empty valet parking spots outside City Fish Market a few minutes to five on a Thursday. Inside, the bar is equally empty. But the bartender, the one with the handlebar mustache, offers a prediction. “Just wait,” he says. “It’s going to be crazy tonight.” Soon, a Daryl Hannah look-alike is saddling up to the other side of the circular bar, which lords a few feet higher than most of the restaurant. Everything feels inspired by Bermuda in here, with white tile and wood everywhere and a giant stuffed tuna over the two-story fireplace. The singer of a two-piece band croons: “I’m in heaven, dancing cheek to cheek.” A house-special raspberry martini – just six bucks at happy hour – arrives at the same time as my guide. Miami native Shari Gherman has promised to show me her adopted town of Boca Raton. She has planned an epic bar and restaurant jaunt from the City Fish Market in west Boca to the confines of Mizner Park.

Worth the Trip Boca Museum of Art 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 561-392-2500, bocamuseum.org. Yes, this 44,000-square-foot museum is one of South Florida’s finest. Yes, it’ll surprise you with avant garde work you’d expect from city museums. But another big reason to go: It’s one of Boca’s places to be seen – and that means also a great spot for people watching.

iPic Theaters 301 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 561-299-3000, ipictheaters.com. Combine a movie house with a fancy restaurant and creative bar and you end up with iPic. “Y

ou ready for tonight?” she says with a devilish grin. Shari is a former magazine sales director who also raised two sons. She’s now president of the American Fine Wine Competition, an annual wine competition and a well-attended gala fundraiser. Shari has a granddaughter, but any idea of a schoolmarm grandma is lost when you have a drink with her. There will be laughter and stories of love lost and introductions to just about everyone in the bar. Shari, you see, is part of the new Boca. It may have sprung up in the last generation or so while you weren’t noticing. The rest of the country may still regard this town as home to Jerry Seinfeld’s parents. But the lazy life of retirees of the past has been replaced by Baby Boomers who want nothing to do with shuffleboard courts. They do gastropubs and happy hours and luxurious restaurant openings. They do Boca. We order a creamy fish dip and a tuna tartare. Shari sips a vodka martini with a splash of cranberry. By six, the bar has filled with a mostly singles clientele of a certain age, but we have places to be. Piñon Grill is attached to the back side of the Town Center at Boca Raton and is outfitted like a dim, comfortable California spa. The bar is so packed that people are spilling into the entranceway. It’s three deep just to get up to a bartender. Turns out we’ve crashed a meeting of The Inner Circle Executive Club. Shari trades cheek kisses with a man in a sharp navy suit standing near the door to the deck. J.C. Perrin is a vice president at SunTrust Bank and has been a Boca resident since 1989. “Back then, it was just a bedroom community for Fort Lauderdale,” Perrin says of his adopted town. “We had two bars: Wildflower and the

Middle East Eating Boca is home to some stellar delis, like Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen (bensdeli.net) and Zinger’s Deli (zingersdeli.com). In recent years, Boca has also become home to Middle East immigrants who have attracted restaurants like Maoz Vegetarian (maozusa.com), Anatolia (amcdine.com) and Sagi’s Mediterranean Grill (sagisgrill.com).

Bounty. And the Bounty was attached to a Holiday Inn, so you can imagine how nice that was.” Shari has pulled over a therapist friend named Virginia Crist, and she’s quick to explain how things have changed. The old Boca Mall gave way to Mizner Park in 1992, and suddenly the city became a destination. Then the glitzy development spread, up and down Federal, out Glades Road. Now Boca is a place where the medians just might have a better lawn than you do. “Today,” Virginia explains, “people are snooty when they say they are from Boca.” Shari has tried unsuccessfully to fight her way to the bar, so it’s time to head to the next spot. To get to The Capital Grille, we’ll need to cut through the mall, past the Lilly Pulitzer, Tiffany’s and Saks. The Capital Grille’s bar is nearly as jammed as Piñon, but this crowd is in sparkly dresses and sharply tailored sport jackets. A large group is here for a dinner pairing organized by Wine Watch, a wine boutique that came up from Fort Lauderdale. Tom Ferraro helped organize the event. He’s a restaurateur, but most people know him as the guy who knows everyone. He’s talking about all the pricey chain restaurants that have come to Boca lately. “The restaurant companies, they started realizing something. We now have famous chefs opening up locations and high-end chains with only two or three locations across the country. They realized we have a lot of high-end people in Boca Raton.” A few of the well-heeled Boca residents are here tonight, no doubt, and they start heading over to a table for 35 set up near the front windows. As they do, Shari sneaks a couple of tastes of a California blend set up for the dinner pairing. “I’m sure they won’t mind,” she laughs. Before he heads for the table, Rod Coleman stops to share more cheek kisses. Rod Coleman is an attorney

who moved to Boca in 2003 when his Realtor told him the place had more affordable homes than Coral Gables. “I had a few glasses too many and all of a sudden I hear myself say, ‘Sure, I’ll move to Boca Raton.’” There was a Dairy Queen on Federal Highway back then, and Rod remembers thinking, “this town was built backwards,” with all suburbs and no center. Now there’s a downtown around Mizner Park. Rod says these days he can’t go a week without an invite to the next glitzy restaurant opening. “To me though,” he says, pointing a finger in the air, “Boca hasn’t changed. It’s still a small town. You can still go to a bar and see everyone you know.”

Above, The iPic Theaters in Mizner Park combines a movie house with a glitzy restaurant and an upscale bar. Below, Piñon Grill packs them in for pre-dinner drinks.

Shari agrees, and there’s still more to see in Boca. Just one more taste – of a luscious lateharvest dessert wine – and then it’s time to head east. It’s finally dark when we sit down at a table in the bar at Max’s Grille. Shari orders a glass of red zin that comes out smelling like a kitchen sponge. She suggests to the server that the bottle is old. “Not likely,” the ponytailed girl says with a smile. “We had ladies’ night last night.” But she graciously agrees to replace it and comes back to chat us up. She grew up in Boca, came back four years ago after a stint in New York, and has been at Max’s ever since. “Th is place has been here 21 years,” she explains. “It never slows down.” As if proving her point, we watch as stragglers from happy hour pair up and are replaced by a somewhat more sober post-dinner crowd. Meanwhile, our server returns with a fruity glass of pinot that smells like spices. There’s also a gooeycrispy flatbread with mushrooms and truffle oil. Brief talk ensues of actually ordering a full dinner or maybe even calling it a night, but Shari has other plans. We do a circle of Mizner to assess the scene and decide on Jazziz Nightlife. We order a glass of port too, and also a caramel-soaked bread pudding served in a shiny pan. It’s nearing midnight by the time Shari pushes the bread pudding across the table. She’s talking about how it’s easy to get to know people in Boca, about how grandmothers here have busier schedules than their granddaughters. “Where to next?” she says with that devilish smile. And it’s clear she’s not joking.

Bliss List A cheat sheet to quality massage By Valerie Schimel

I

t’s a fact, life is better with a massage. We feel better, we sleep better, we move easier. Here’s your guide for getting the best massage possible – and why September may be the best time to indulge.

The Benefits Clinical studies have shown massage can

help alleviate anxiety, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, headaches, stress-induced insomnia and joint pain. It doesn’t end there, The Wall Street Journal recently reported: “Research over the past couple of years has found that massage therapy boosts immune function in women with breast cancer, improves symptoms in children with asthma, and increases grip strength in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Giving massages to the littlest patients, premature babies, helped in the crucial task of gaining weight.” The numbers say it all: 87 percent of people polled recognize that

massage can be beneficial to health and wellness, according to the American Massage Therapy Association.

The Lingo While there are dozens of types of massage, three varieties seem to be the most common in South Florida: Deep tissue, Swedish and Shiatsu. Designed to relieve severe muscular tension, deep tissue massage focuses on the underlying layers of muscles. It’s generally recommended for clients who are very physically active, injured or both. Warning – deep tissue is not for the faint of heart. The massage can be painful and you’re often left sore in new places for a day or two following treatment. Swedish is the most common type of massage. It uses five basic styles of flowing strokes (think sliding, kneading, tapping, friction and shaking) to reduce pain and ease joint stiff ness. Swedish massage is also the top pick for a relaxing, restorative experience. Falling asleep mid-treatment is common.

WORTH THE TRIP

It’s a drive, but Jill at Equinox South Beach is worth it. 50 minutes with the former dancer and you’ll slide off the table. She’s used to dealing with athletes (recreational and professional), so if you’ve got a sports injury, she’s your guide. She’ll bend, knead and dig your muscles into submission – or recommend something or someone that can. 520 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, 305-673-1172, equinox.com.

Shiatsu (meaning finger pressure) is a Japanese therapy in which therapists use their thumbs, fi ngers and palms. It’s a light touch designed to balance a body’s yin and yang. A good choice for modest clients, as loose fitting clothing is generally worn. Beyond these three, other common massage varieties include hot stone, trigger point, prenatal and sports. Each uses its own props and strokes and has its own benefits.

Remede Spa at the St. Regis Bal Harbour is basically serenity in a building. Your breath slows down the minute you step into the muted spa lobby. The signature 75-minute Bal Harbour Brilliance Massage utilizes crystals, chakra balancing and botanical-rich oils to relieve stress and eliminate negative energy. It’s as Zen as it sounds. 9703 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour, 305-993-3300, x3600, stregisbalharbour.com.

When to Spa

There’s no time like the present. September 2013 is Lauderdale Spa Chic, which means 30 days of $99 treatments available throughout town. Visit sunny.org for a complete list of participating spas and treatments.

Available in 60- or 85-minute increments, the extreme sports massage at Bliss Fort Lauderdale at the W Fort Lauderdale is

perfect for weekend warriors, professional athletes and everyone in between. Therapists tackle painful spots head-on with parafango packs, deep-tissue work, spasm-soothing oils and painsoothing gel. 401 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-414-8232, wfortlauderdalehotel.com.

The Diplomat’s brand new Heavenly Spa by Westin is a massage lover’s dream come true. Eight varieties of massage are available, ranging from prenatal to hot stone. The first step in the signature Aspire treatment is telling your therapist how you’d like to feel. Then settle in for 80 minutes of customized massage techniques and plant aromatherapy oils to make your mood a reality. 3555 S. Ocean Drive, Hollywood, 954602-8400, diplomatresort.com.

22,000 square feet of spa luxury await at the spa at Fort Lauderdale’s Harbor Beach Marriott. The spa offers over a dozen types of massage, including the signature Sticks & Stones treatment. The 50-minute massage is billed as a “therapeutic combination of warm stones therapy and tropical Tiki bliss.” First, basalt stones are used to warm and relax muscles, then bamboo sticks are utilized for detail work. 3030 Holiday Drive, Fort Lauderdale, 954-765-3032, marriott.com.

Kaluz Restaurant 3300 E. Commercial Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 954-772-2209 kaluzrestaurant.com It’s hard to deny the location of this contemporary American cuisine-focused restaurant, and Kaluz makes our list for that reason. Situated on the Intracoastal Waterway next to the Commercial Boulevard bridge, Kaluz is the latest dining destination that offers upscale dining in a romantic waterfront setting. The menu ranges from salads and flatbreads to burgers and steaks and features a selection of seafood items. We enjoy Kaluz best for its outdoor patio bar, where we can slurp an old-fashioned frozen rum runner or sip on the signature Cadillac margarita as the world cruises by.

With an indoor/ outdoor bar and al fresco seating overlooking A1A and the beach, S3 honors its prime location on the ground level of the Hilton Hotel with a delightful menu. From small plates such as the sophisticated smoked gouda and crispy prosciutto mac-and-cheese to the tea-brined roasted duck served with apple mustard and coconut cashew rice, S3’s menu features dishes that are casually elegant. S3 is the vision of “The Restaurant People” president Tim Petrillo, executive chef Peter Boloukus, and construction

In the few months since opening, S3 has already commanded a large following of “who’s who.” Some come for the signature cocktails, others for the sushi or wood-fired brisket sliders, others for the setting – and most for all three.

on Oakland Park Boulevard and A1A stands out for its eyecatching design backlit by neon blue and purple hues and follows up with an attractive menu featuring classic Greek dishes served in modern simplicity. Fresh ingredients and locally sourced seafood are mainstays of the dishes, but we also recommend traditional Greek favorites such as the lavraki (grilled whole Mediterranean sea bass) and oak-grilled lamb chops.

HMF The Breakers 1 S. County Road, Palm Beach 561-290-0104 hmfpalmbeach.com When you’re in the mood to harken back to another time, like the glamorous mid-20th-

century cocktail-club era, look no further than HMF at The Breakers. Named after the initials of the resort’s creator, Henry Morrison Flagler, HMF blends contemporary elegance with a nod to the golden era of Palm Beach. Located in the historic Florentine Room, HMF has been given a tasteful décor makeover at the hands of designer Adam D. Tihany that highlights the resort’s architectural details with a classic retro feel. Even the wait staff looks the part, with the servers styled in mid-20th-century outfits and hairstyles. The menu is anything but old school and features items inspired by the local food movement and gourmet food-truck craze. With everything served as small plates, the menu offerings are so varied we found ourselves in a bit of a selection frenzy. Start with a divine signature cocktail (I went with the “Redhead,” comprised of Charbay Meyer lemon vodka, blood orange liqueur, a splash of cranberry and a heavenly lime foam) before diving into your Korean short ribs or Japanese robata-grilled churrasco steak chimichurri. Finish it off with a decadent butterscotch panna cotta with rum-roasted pineapple and macadamia crackle, but remember HMF’s etiquette rules, including No. 2: “Gentlemen

Jazziz Nightlife 201 Plaza Real, Boca Raton 561-300-0730 jazziznightlife.com Finally, an entertainment venue matched by a superb menu has come to Boca Raton. Reminiscent of a New Orleans supper club, Jazziz is the vision of owner and jazz connoisseur Michael Fagien, who, along with a stellar management team, is making waves on the South Florida dining scene. Featuring nightly live jazz by top-notch acts, Jazziz offers myriad dining options, allowing patrons to customize their music and dining experience. Book a table or booth in the Live Room or get up close and personal from your table

in the Stage Left Lounge. Enjoy a more intimate atmosphere in the Champagne and Caviar Bar (with its 12-foot champagne flute chandelier) or the Piano and Cigar Bar. Dine indoors at the Main Bar or al fresco on the outdoor patio, or reserve private dining in the Ella Room or the Executive Chef Private Dining Room that looks over the stage. At the hands of executive chef Justin Flit, the menu is a fine selection of the classics with a modern twist, from buffalo-style fried calamari with Maytag blue cheese to hand-rolled penne with braised beef short rib and Di Stefano burrata. Traditionalists won’t be disappointed, as the menu also features slow-smoked baby back ribs with cornbread and a fennel slaw and free-range chicken breast in an apricot glaze served with fingerling potatoes and haricots verts.

highlighted with tasteful Old World touches. The visionary behind Bad Ragaz, Alessandro Silvestri, is no stranger to running a successful kitchen, as he is also the executive chef of Tramonti in Delray Beach. The food-and-bier concept was inspired by Silvestri’s European heritage and travels and named after a Swiss village. As one would expect, Bad Ragaz offers a fine selection of beer – 24 varieties on tap and 50 European imported bottles. Custom ceramic beer towers keep the drafts crisp and fresh and, for those who want to sample Very Important Beers (“VIBs”), booths with table taps offer three special selections of your choice billed by the poured ounce. Sure, you can get your Hungarian wurst and traditional Viennese schnitzel, but the menu features plenty of other European-inspired dishes, including pastas, classic beef bourguignon, steak tartare and Manchego cheese-covered fries.

ed up with the doldrums of a lingering summer? Then go for something different. Paint the town “pink” with some easy-to-like, quaffable rosé sparklers. These bubblies, whether enjoyed solo or with foods, can turn any time and any day into something special. Poema Cava Brut Rosado, a very affordable sparkling wine from Spain, is light and fresh and easy on the palate. It nicely complements baked ham, grilled fish (try it with salmon) and cold cuts (I like it with hard salami). SRP: $13. Caposaldo Sweet Pink Merlot Moscato is only slightly sweet, but just enough to appeal to virtually any palate and pair nicely (surprise!) with grilled burgers and baby back ribs. This versatile Italian bubbly blend can also be enjoyed with desserts like fruit tarts and American cheesecake. SRP: $16. Taittinger is one of the great producers of champagne, and the Taittinger Prestige Rosé is testimony to their well-deserved reputation. This French “pinkie” is fresh and fruity and always welcomed as a special aperitif. I like it with popcorn, while watching a favorite old movie on TCM. SRP: $65. Far more than just a pretty bottle, artist Scott Campbell’s new SAVED rosé is a palette of palate-pleasing strawberry and citrus fruit flavors. Veteran California winemaker Clay Brock worked with Campbell on the wine, which Scott calls “a pink wine for tough guys.” And, everyone else. Just now launching, SRP: $15.

If You Received an Automated or Prerecorded Call from Fifth Third Bank on Your Cell Phone Between March 6, 2008 and June 11, 2013,

PHOTO OP

You Could Get Money from a Class Action Settlement. A settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit relating to calls allegedly made by Fifth Third to cell phones through the use of an automatic telephone dialing system and/or an artificial or prerecorded voice. This notice is only a summary. A complete description is available at: www.FifthThirdTCPASettlement.com. Description of Litigation. The lawsuit claims that Fifth Third violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (“TCPA”), by placing calls on or after March 6, 2008 to cell phones through the use of an automatic telephone dialing system or an artificial or prerecorded voice without the consent of the potential class members. Fifth Third denies these allegations and denies any claim of wrongdoing. The Court has not decided which side is right. Instead, after careful consideration both sides have concluded that it would be in the best interests of all parties to settle in order to avoid the uncertainties of litigation and to assure that the benefits reflected in the settlement agreement are obtained for the Settlement Class Members. Who Is Included? The Settlement Class includes all persons to whom, on or after March 6, 2008 through June 11, 2013, Fifth Third or any of its affiliates or subsidiaries, or any entity acting on its behalf, placed a non-emergency telephone call to a cell phone through the use of an automatic telephone dialing system and/or an artificial or prerecorded voice, without the consent of such person. Excluded from the Settlement Class are the Judge and the Judge’s staff and immediate family, as well as all persons who validly request exclusion from the Settlement Class. Settlement Payments. Fifth Third has agreed to establish a Settlement Fund (the “Fund”) of $4.5 million. The Fund will be used to make payments to Settlement Class Members; to pay for notice and settlement administration; and to pay Class Counsel’s attorneys’ fees and costs. The Fund will be used first to pay for notice and settlement administration costs, and then (subject to Court approval) to pay up to $1,500,000 in attorneys’ fees and costs and $25,000 to the named Plaintiff for his services in the case. The rest of the Fund will be paid to Settlement Class Members who file a claim. If the settlement is approved, estimated claims payments will be between $200 and $300 with a cap of $10,000. Settlement Class Members may claim one settlement award. If there is any money left after all claims are paid, it will be paid to charity. How Do I Make a Claim? Claim Forms are available at www. FifthThirdTCPAsettlement.com or by calling 1-866-802-1808 toll free. You must complete and mail the Claim Form by November 22, 2013 in order to receive a settlement payment. Other Options. If you don’t want to be legally bound by the settlement, you must request exclusion by October 10, 2013, or you will not be able to independently sue about the legal claims in this case. If you request exclusion, you will not get money from this settlement. If you do not request exclusion from the settlement, you may object to it by explaining, in writing, why you do not like the settlement by October 10, 2013. If you remain a member of the Settlement Class, you will be bound by any judgment entered whether or not it is favorable to the Settlement Class. You can find more detailed information about these options at www.FifthThirdTCPAsettlement.com or by calling 1-866802-1808 toll free. The Court will hold a Fairness Hearing in this case (Hanley v. Fifth Third Bank) at 1:00 PM on December 23, 2013, at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, 219 S. Dearborn Street, Chicago, Illinois, in courtroom 2541. You may ask the Court for permission to speak at the Fairness Hearing if you have timely submitted an objection to the Court. To speak at the Fairness Hearing, you must send a letter saying that it is your “Notice of Intention to Appear in Hanley v. Fifth Third Bank” and include your name, address, telephone number, and your signature. Your Notice of Intention to Appear must be postmarked no later than October 10, 2013. You cannot speak at the hearing if you excluded yourself from the Settlement Class. More detailed information is available at www.FifthThirdTCPASettlement. com or by calling 1-866-802-1808 toll free. DO NOT CALL OR WRITE TO THE COURT OR THE CLERK OF THE COURT. DO NOT CONTACT FIFTH THIRD ABOUT THE SETTLEMENT. TELEPHONE REPRESENTATIVES ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO CHANGE THE TERMS OF THE SETTLEMENT OR THIS NOTICE.

Time W Out

The University of Kansas retires Mario Chalmers’ jersey number.

e know what pro athletes are doing during the season – training, traveling and putting it all on the court, diamond or gridiron. But what do they do after the clock runs out on the last game of the year? City & Shore caught up with several athletes – Heat point guard Mario Chalmers, Dolphins guard Richie Incognito and Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton – to find out how they spend their off-season.

When play stops, players find other ways to play – and get others in the game By Elizabeth Rahe

No wonder. Chalmers averaged 8.6 points per game last season, and in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, he racked up 20

healthy. I do have a lot of time off during the offseason so I’m exploring all my options, getting as much knowledge as I can. My plan is to finish my undergraduate degree in communications – because I did leave school early to enter the NFL draft – and then pursue a post-graduate degree, maybe an MBA. Any philanthropic activities? I do a lot of work with military charities – Operation Homefront and the Eagle Fund. For each Miami Dolphins home game I’ve purchased 20 tickets that I will donate to military charities … to get families down here to enjoy the games.

PHOTOS: DENIS BANCROFT, MIAMI MARLINS

Giancarlo Stanton, 23, has provided d some uplifting moments in a largelyy depressing season that had the Marlins competing to avoid last place. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Californian has been racking up career home runs (106 at press time). Stanton was the subject of trade rumors this summer, but the Marlins held on to their promising slugger, who reportedly pulled in $537,000 this season. He was also the subject of a recent ESPN The Magazine Body Issue feature – photographed during his last off-season – wearing nothing but gold paint and a strategic splash of water. Where will you spend your off time? Mostly at home in Southern California. What are your goals for the off-season? I try to find some time to relax right when the season ends, to just chill out and hang with my family and friends before starting up my workouts again. We go to the beach or just hang out. I spend a lot of time at my old high school, visiting with the students. And I like to take my dog for hikes – that’s pretty relaxing for me. Once I start my workouts, I get pretty busy. How do you stay in shape? I work out in the gym in the mornings, then I try to get running and cardio workouts in. I try to go to the UCLA track to get my running in; otherwise I can do it at the beach. Any travels? Nothing planned right now, but I try to get somewhere. I went to Europe last off-season. Living in a vacation city, I don’t really need to go anywhere tropical for vacation, so I like getting to places that I haven’t been to or that I’m not able to go to during the season. [At some point] I would like to go to an international sporting event, like the Olympics or the World Cup.● Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton devotes much of the off-season to his fitness regimen, preparing for his on-field athletics.

FRESH LOOKS

Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale’s new director looks to build on a solid foundation of its own, unique work

As

director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Bonnie Clearwater transformed the once-obscure institution into a museum of international stature. She hopes to accomplish a similar feat as the new director of the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. “I’d like to see us as a developer of content, exhibitions and scholarship,” she says. In the past, the museum has hosted some impressive traveling exhibitions, but Clearwater believes with its permanent collections, art academy and affiliation with Nova Southeastern University, the institution can develop into a world-class artistic force in its own right. The museum’s collection of works from the radical, post World War II CoBrA movement, and its more sublime collection of works by William J. Glackens, known as America’s Renoir, form a solid foundation upon which to build. “These collections aren’t replicated anywhere, and it’s important that we highlight them,” Clearwater says. —Kingsley Guy
