In the glamorous era of the late 1950s, the 750-room Diplomat opened its doors on Hollywood Beach and began welcoming celebrities, heads of state and the hottest entertainment acts of the day. For the next 30 years, The Diplomat epitomized the good life, transforming the quiet neighborhood of Hollywood Beach into the destination of choice for a “Who’s Who” of the celebrity world. Names like Bing Crosby, Buddy Hackett, Woody Allen, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr., Liza Minnelli, Ann-Margret and Bob Hope drew record crowds during performances in the hotel’s classy Café Crystal. Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight spent time in The Diplomat’s care while filming 1969’s Midnight Cowboy. Every U.S. president since Richard Nixon has visited the iconic hotel at one time or another. The hotel’s Regency Ballroom was the site of Frank Sinatra’s legendary return from retirement on New Year’s Eve 1974, an event that drew 3,500 people paying as much as $200 a ticket. Jimmy Carter addressed the International Transport Workers’ Federation and attended a Democratic National Convention fundraiser hosted in the Embassy Room in the early 1980s. A series of arson fires in 1983 accelerated the financial difficulties being experienced by the hotel, which by this point had expanded to include 1,170 rooms, two golf courses and 19 tennis courts, all of which were served by thousands of employees. By the end of the decade, entire sections of the hotel were closed. Once again being recognized in 2013 with Wine Spectator’s Best of Awards of Excellence, Hollywood Prime offers a truly exceptional dining experience, catered to by knowledgeable and experienced servers who will ensure that your meal is of the highest caliber. To underscore the importance of culinary offerings at The Diplomat, more than 20 sommeliers are employed at the resort, and the resort appointed the renowned Chef Christian Rassinoux as executive chef in March 2013. Chef Rassinoux has an impressive portfolio of hospitality experience, joining The Diplomat from his most recent position as executive chef of MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the country’s largest hotel. Prior to that, Rassinoux served as executive chef for more than 20 years at various Ritz-Carlton hotels from California to China. Chef Rassinoux also enjoys a lengthy list of culinary accolades, including the title, Chef of the Year from the French Culinary Association in 1986 and again from Le Toques Blanche International in 1990; Chevalier in the National Order of Merit by the President of the French Republic in 1994; and an honorary Doctorate of Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University in 1995. He served as a member of the Conseiller Culinaire for the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs from 1986 to 2007 and was previously president of the French Chefs Association. “We are fortunate to have so many guests from different countries with unique diverse cultures and needs,” Rassinoux says. “The team and I are always looking for ways to globally personalize our guest’s experience.” Rassinoux oversees all food and beverage operations at the resort and infuses the SuperFoodsRX ingredients into the menus to create great tasting and healthy options for all guests. Chef Rassinoux will also lead the culinary strategy for groups and events at the convention center.

“We have that classic country-club feel coupled with a welcoming resort attitude that is carried throughout the property.” — Sean Gradomski, PGA Director of Golf
UPLIFTING DOWNTIME GOLF Accessed via a short, complimentary shuttle ride, the 18hole championship golf course at The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa’s golf location in Hallandale Beach features manicured greens that were redesigned by renowned golf architect Joe Lee. The 155-acre course is managed by Troon Golf ®, one of the world’s most highly respected golf-course management companies. “We have that classic country-club feel coupled with a welcoming resort attitude that is carried throughout the property by the friendliness of the Ambassadors,” says PGA Director of Golf Sean Gradomski. “From the valet service to Outside Operations to the Links grill and back to the valet, you are served to perfection.” Nestled among coconut and royal palm trees and 50-year-old shady banyans, The Diplomat’s par-72 golf course stretches nearly 7,000 yards and features rolling fairways, four par 5’s, eight acres of lakes and 76 bunkers – enough to challenge the most accomplished golfer and provide an enjoyable experience for players of all levels. Guests will enjoy the beautiful surroundings, the wildlife, meticulous playing services, luxurious amenities and “that old time Florida feel” of this certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The Diplomat received this certification in recognition of the bird sanctuaries along the course, which is in step with the brand’s eco-conscious green initiatives. The resort’s golf carts are equipped with the Visage GPS system to easily navigate the course and enable players to electronically order snacks and refreshments to be delivered while on the course. PGA golf pros are on hand to provide private lessons for individuals or groups, while guests can practice their swing at the driving range or on the practice putting and chipping greens. Memberships are available. To schedule a tee time call 954-883-4444. DIPLOMAT MAGAZINE

earth projects, learning and connecting with others while away from home.” While full-day sessions that include lunch and snacks can be reserved for a small fee, many of the familydesigned events and activities are free, and participants are encouraged to explore at their own pace. “The children love learning and exploring the operations of the resort, trying a new sport and anything food related,” Jeffrey says. “The schedule is determined by the group and kids’ vote rules.” Parents can take advantage of the Parents’ (Kids’) Night Out program on Friday and Saturday nights, to enjoy a quiet dinner for two, a spa treatment or a sunset cocktail. The Westin Destination Club offers activities for the entire family, from baking cookies from scratch in the pastry shop to ice-cream socials, running or walking on the Hollywood Broadwalk, and family board games, competitions and movie nights. Jeffrey says that the best part of his job is capturing those cherished moments when families can just enjoy being on vacation. “The expressions,

DIP, FLOAT, SWIM THE POOLS The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa offers not one but two large pools, the first being a 120-foot-long Infinity pool with waterfalls and a circular sea-through “window” on its bottom that looks through to the 240-foot Lagoon pool below. The Infinity pool features saline water, which requires fewer chemicals, and a six-inch shallow end that is a perfect splash center for the resort’s youngest guests. The Lagoon pool is great for those wishing to swim long laps or float through the waterfalls on inflatable rafts. The outdoor Jacuzzi invites relaxation after a day of action. Surrounding the pool area are a variety of cabanas and casitas to suit every guest and activity level. The poollevel cabanas include a cable television and four chairs inside the cabana with two chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella outside. The upper cabanas and casitas include the same seating options, along with commanding views of the Atlantic Ocean and a personal Splash server. All cabanas include complimentary pitchers of soda, iced tea and water. Beach cabanas, lounge chairs, umbrellas and beach beds are also available. For reservations call 954-602-8690. The Trolley also passes Young’s former home, at 1055 Hollywood Blvd. Today, downtown Hollywood’s tree-lined streets are bustling with shops, galleries, restaurants and nightspots. For more information visit www.downtownhollywood.com. ArtsPark at Young Circle is another must visit. Set in the heart of the city, the area is a 10-acre oasis of culture, art and nature. With Ritsuko Taho’s water sculpture Millennium Springs and the ArtsPark Amphitheater serving as the centerpieces, the circle is alive under the ancient baobab trees with a children’s park and interactive fountain. The ArtsPark hosts free activities, including music, dancing, fitness classes, outdoor movies and food-truck events. For more information call 954-921-3500. A short walk from the ArtsPark trolley stop, the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood presents innovative and unique visual and performing arts programs.
