WINNERS & LOSERS

Who was up and who was down last week

Trying to read the Albany tea leaves? Or, according to one drink order overheard at the state Capitol Dunkin’, the Albany lemonade + iced coffee + iced tea leaves. It’s hard to tell as the session ends, and rumors fly and notes are passed about what’ll get done and what’ll have to wait until 2023. Or 2024 … or 2034. Who’s a winner and who’s a loser can change as quickly as the day’s agenda. Don’t see your favorite names here? Wait a few days, when the dust settles.

LIZ KRUEGER & CHARLES LAVINE

State Sen. Liz Krueger and Assembly Member Charles Lavine passed a bill that bans New York law enforcement from participating in legal proceedings launched in states with abortion prohibitions against New York abortion providers who serve out-of-state individuals. Another bill, not sponsored by this duo, enshrined the rights of people who travel here seeking abortions.

ERIC ADAMS

The close of the state legislative session is wrapping up with a few disappointments for New York City Mayor Eric Adams, including only a two-year extension of mayoral control of schools and the expiration of the 421-a affordable housing tax break. But “professional naysayers” in the state Legislature who aren’t on “Team New York,” are to blame, Adams said, not his own lackluster showing in Albany this year.

THE BEST OF THE REST REBECCA FISCHER

The mass shootings in Buffalo and Texas inspired a package of new gun restrictions which have led the nation in its response to both tragedies. Rebecca Fischer, executive director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, said the package was comprehensive in addressing the crisis.

KRISTIN RICHARDSON JORDAN

Member deference is still holding strong. The city’s housing boosters thought they could get 900 or so homes in Harlem, but the local council member held firm for months – she wanted more affordable housing that would keep residents in the neighborhood.

THE REST OF THE WORST STEVEN RICHMAN

Steven Richman, previously in charge of the New York City Board of Elections’ legal side, was accused of behavior that is both “shameful” and “criminal.” He pleaded guilty to two counts of official misconduct after city investigators found he gave interns a creepy “physical fitness assessment.”

TIM MINTON

The MTA recently expressed ire for a specific flavor of fare beater, the type that buys “$7 lattes.” However, video unearthed by MTA spokesperson Tim Minton of one such incident was edited to remove the part of the video where the woman tried to swipe in.
