ARTapalooza on SUNDAY
Community Main Street is excited to host the 17th annual ARTapalooza on SUNDAY, September 10, 2023 from 9am–4pm in the Cedar Falls Downtown District! This annual celebration of art draws many talented artists from throughout the region. In addition, there is something for everyone to enjoy as downtown is filled with artist demonstrations, live entertainment, and free children’s activities.
Nearly 50 regional artists will display and sell their work at booths set up along the meandering Main Street. Artists hoping to showcase their work passed a competitive jurying process to be accepted into the show. A variety of artwork will be featured in this year’s show, including ceramics, paintings, metal sculptures, fiber, jewelry, photography, drawing, printmaking, and mixed media, among others.

Opening Reception: Thursday, August 24 from 5:30–7:00 p.m. This exhibition includes works from Thursday Painters, past and present. What began 75 years ago, is still a committed and talented group. Each week, members gather at the Hearst Center to create, encourage, and share with one another. As part of this special showcase of artists, an oral history video is available documenting their journey with the Thursday Painters. DOCUMENTARY SCREENING OF DEEJ: INCLUSION SHOULDN’T BE A LOTTERY

Join us to view this 2017 documentary about David James (DJ) Savarese, a nonspeaking autistic teenager with disabilities who is depicted as communicating through the scientifically discredited facilitated communication technique. This documentary film shines an inspiring light on the full potential of kids with significant disabilities. Shot over a six-year period, Deej reveals not only what the ideal of full inclusion requires but also what it can accomplish. See the FTRS event below for an additional opportunity to meet him.

The Final Thursday Reading Series is a collaboration of Final Thursday Press, the Hearst Center, the UNI College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences, and the UNI Department of Languages and Literatures. August 31: DJ Savarese | David James “D.J.” Savarese is a 2022/23 Iowa Arts Fellow who teaches poetry writing for the LYNX Project/Chicago and directs the Lives-in-Progress Collective. His recent creative work includes Swoon (Nine Mile Books, 2022), Pushcart Prize-nominated Passive Plants and Peabody award-winning, Emmy-nominated documentary Deej: Inclusion Shouldn’t Be a Lottery.
September 28: Darcie Little Badger l Darcie Little Badger is a Lipan Apache writer with a PhD in oceanography. Her newest book, A Snake Falls to Earth, is a breathtaking work of Indigenous futurism. This event is made possible by the Ila M. Hemm Visiting Author Program.

But when “all the Natalie Portmans” start talking back to her, Keyonna has to face her off-screen drama in this imaginative new play reminding us to embrace life on the ground while still reaching for the stars. All the Natalie Portmans premiered off-Broadway in Feb. 2020.

Lino Printmaking

Join us for an introduction to lino printmaking. Using a reductive process, participants learn to cut away material to bring their drawing to life. Instructor, Merle Poland demonstrates and guides students through transferring drawings onto blocks, carving techniques, and the printing process. Instructor: Merle Poland Fee: $62 ($55)
Pottery On The Patio
Every Second Sunday in July & August from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., or 1:30–3:30 p.m.
Work on the wheel outdoors while enjoying the Hearst Center Patio and Sculpture Garden. Each potter is given up to five pounds of clay and two hours to work with assistance from our staff. Finished work is fired, glazed by staff, and available for pickup later in the month. Experience with wheel throwing is recommended, but not required. Instructor: Benjamin Miller | Fee: $32 ($28)
