ENROLLING ON A COURSE Course conditions
Health conditions
Book early
You attend all courses at your own risk. For example, if you are on a sports or massage course you must ensure you are medically suitable (i.e. consult your GP prior to enrolment) and notify the course tutor of any relevant medical condition you have.
Wherever possible, please book onto your chosen course as early as possible. This will prevent disappointment should the course become full or if it is cancelled due to low enrolment. Late enrolment We understand that missing an enrolment deadline is sometimes unavoidable. Subject to available places and the course content, late enrolment might be possible.
Student ID You will need to display your student ID card at all times whilst in the College. You will be given this card at enrolment. If you have enrolled online or by telephone, you will need to visit the Student Centre or the Learning Resource Centre before your course begins.
Course viability A course may be cancelled if minimum enrolment numbers are not achieved or maintained throughout the course duration. In these circumstances, you may be offered the reduced course hours, to transfer to another course or a pro-rata refund of the fee. Full courses and waiting lists
We understand that from time-to-time there may be circumstances that prevent you from attending the course. However, some courses will have a minimum attendance requirement — particularly those that lead to a qualification. This will be explained at the beginning of the course.
If a course is full, you can be added to a waiting list. If additional tutors and facilities are available and the list is sufficiently large, another course may be set up. In this case, you would be contacted with the details.
Should your attendance become a concern, you will be contacted and offered help wherever possible to catch up with any missed work.
Substitute tutors and venues
Please respect your tutor and fellow course members by making every effort to get to classes in good time for the start of each lesson.
Should a tutor or venue become unavailable, we will inform you as soon as possible. We retain the discretion to substitute alternative tutors and venues to those listed without prior notice; either before the course or during. In this case, a refund would not be provided.
6

Designing and Making Silverware Short course This course is an introduction to the basics of silversmithing. It is suitable for new learners however, anyone with prior experience will be supported to pursue individual projects following discussion. In the first term, beginners will learn basic skills in piercing, forming, soldering and finishing via a ‘bezel box project’. Those with experience (or booking onto further blocks) will focus on creating a small (yet more complex) sculptural and individualised piece incorporating techniques such as press-work, forging, mitering and scoring. Candleholders or culinary utensils are suggested projects. Whilst silverware is commonly perceived as ‘shiny and polished’ there will be an emphasis on considering surface finish, embellishment and decoration.
During your learning journey, you will also gather some contextual awareness of makers in the field and sources for materials to further your personal learning. Please note: There will be an initial one-off cost of approximately £30–£60 to purchase your materials. You may choose between silver and copper which will be priced differently. Code

Pattern Cutting Introduction
Develop your sewing skills and learn how to make your own clothes using a commercial pattern. Each term you will work towards making a new garment, starting with a skirt or pyjama trousers for complete beginners. To start, you will be introduced to the College sewing machines and shown how to thread up and sew a variety of basic and more decorative seams.
On this dynamic course your specialist tutor will show you how to draft a basic block pattern and how this can be adapted to your own design. You will produce a sample of your garment (toile) and learn how to fit, adjust and create the finished piece. There will be some input on garment construction but the main emphasis will be pattern cutting. It is a fast moving, structured course which does require some additional work at home.
The course will take you through the whole process of making a garment including selecting and cutting the right size of pattern, adapting patterns to fit your shape, cutting out fabrics, sewing darts, pleats and seams, inserting zips, attaching sleeves, collars, cuffs and stitching hems. Sewing machines and overlockers are available to use, although you may find it useful to have your own sewing machine at home to continue your garment and practise techniques away from the class. Looking at Art as Social History: Victorian Narrative Painting 1 day course Victorian narrative painting opens up our view of art, enabling us to see and enjoy it in a totally different way. Full of symbolism, it exposes features we hardly notice - informing us about the period and its massive social and cultural changes. Artists were painting domestic scenes and 'real life' and were not afraid of controversial subjects which might shock. We look at paintings, drawings, fashion plates, cartoons and advertising posters and all is illustrated with PowerPoint slides.

A fascinating period which includes the beginning of flight and computers.

As the MET we can build on the individual Colleges’ strengths and invest more in our teaching, learning and assessment. The MET offers a comprehensive range of qualifications for 16 year olds leaving school, full-time and part-time courses for adults, apprenticeships, professional qualifications and university degrees. The MET operates across five campuses in Brighton, Shoreham and Worthing and teaches around 3,500 16–18 year olds, 7,500 adult learners, 1,000 undergraduates and 800 apprentices.
What is Greater Brighton? ‘Greater Brighton’ as a region reaches across the Sussex Coast to Worthing, Lewes and Burgess Hill – covering all of our five campuses. We have two in Brighton, two in Worthing and one in Shoreham.
