TRI VALLEY POOL & SPA. INC. “A BETTER WAY TO BUILD”

“Our project consisted of the remodeling of an existing pool, addition of a spa, and the reconfiguration of our outdoor living space. The large-scale project produced many interconnected problems and decisions. Craig Kircher and his team at Tri-Valley Pools patiently shared their vast wealth of information, took us on multiple tours of beautifully completed pools with varied colors, textures, and shapes. After months of research, we were able to confidentially proceed with our project which was efficiently and expeditiously completed. We are absolutely thrilled with the result and couldn’t recommend the Tri-Valley team more highly.” —Anne and Larry Crowe

State & Fig A celebration of family and flavors

Shelly Vinson

P

atrick Casey and wife Marisa Moran had no intention of buying a restaurant when they visited Santa Barbara in Spring 2011. Up from Los Angeles, they wanted to relax and enjoy the culinary offerings. Patrick had a hectic job in food service for the Hollywood Bowl, and Marisa managed ritzy events at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey. They were also new parents, and Christopher was still in diapers. But after discovering a space in the charming La Arcada, they quickly made the decision and within five months, the family had relocated. Renovations took place while Christopher was a toddler.

State and Fig, the resulting restaurant, has a family feel, and not just because Christopher, now aged 5, is here this sunny afternoon. Words from Patrick’s Italian grandmother set the tone: “it’s about the way we eat, not what we eat.” Patrick explains, “I grew up eating what was fresh, simply prepared. I wanted that again, for my child. I wanted him to know where his food comes from.” The name itself is a clue. “State” refers not to the street, but to California and its bounty, as ingredients are locally grown, raised or made. “Fig” points to the Mediterranean region. “Our foot is rooted in Italy, with Spain in mind, cooked (continued)

Californian,” he says with a smile. “We decide on the menu based on the weather, what’s at the Farmer’s Market that week, and our own mood.” The previous weekend was unseasonably hot, he recalls, and perfect to enjoy antipasti, which change daily and can be ordered individually or in sets of three or five. Each are distinct and delicious. Crispy garbanzo beans are tossed with chile, lemon, garlic and parsley. Crisp hours-old snap peas are dressed with a tiny bit of mint and crispy capers. Watermelon, tomatoes, cucumber, mint, and feta cheese are the perfect hot-weather dish. Dining in the outdoor stone courtyard is pleasant, and a popular destination for weekend brunch. The short rib eggs benedict special is swoon-inducing, as is Figg’in Toast – grilled brioche stuffed with fig cream cheese, served with vanilla maple syrup. Lunch is served daily. Dinner is Wednesday through Saturday, when diners come before performances at the nearby Granada, Arlington and New Vic theaters. “It’s calm here, and has an Old World romantic feeling,” says Patrick, “More people are discovering La Arcada as a nighttime dining destination.” But it’s family friendly all the time, as demonstrated by these dedicated parents. — Julia McHugh State & Fig, in La Arcada Plaza, 1114 State Street, www.stateandfig.com, 805-965-1730 18

So smooooth! T

he 2014 Carr Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of two vineyards located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley: 50% Coquelicot Vineyard & 50% Vogelzang Vineyard. The juice was co-fermented in stainless steel to bring out the best of both vineyards and then aged for five months. The wine has a slightly creamy texture that is balanced with its lively acidity. Notes of lime zest and honey are accented by flavors of lemon meringue, ruby grapefruit and green melon. The wine is crisp and refreshing with a round finish, making it a perfect paring to crab cakes, key lime grilled shrimp or chicken piccata. Enjoy! Available Carr Winery 414 N. Made with love A local bounty served straight from the heart

I

t’s a busy Wednesday morning at Food From The Heart. A group of volunteers gathers along two sides of a long cafeteria table, efficiently and carefully assembling green salads. Next up is Cajun chicken with rice, Andouille sausage, roasted bell peppers and black beans. At another table, chili soup gets ladled into Styrofoam containers. These delicious dishes, all freshly made from scratch in the commercial kitchen at Trinity Lutheran Church, will be packed in bags, along with potato-bacon frittata, pasta salad, fresh fruit, bread and gingerbread cake, and delivered to the 160 clients of Food From The Heart who receive such bounty weekly. Food From The Heart, a volunteer-driven Santa Barbara 501 (c)(3) non-profit, delivers nutritious, well-balanced and tasty meals free of charge to their grateful clients who are mostly homebound and facing a health crisis. Acting Director Kelly Onnen notes that clients are referred by local agencies from the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara with Sansum Clinic to Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care. Another important ingredient at FFTH is the relationships the organization has forged over the years with community partners and sponsors. Says Ms. Onnen, “We are supported by so many generous, wonderful local businesses, banks, churches and foundations, and along with the city of Goleta we couldn’t do it without them!” —Nancy Ransohoff

Luxury in green

R

elaxing in a cozy banquette seat with flickering candlelight as soft jazz wafts on the ocean breeze, we dig into ahi tuna in putanesca sauce over penne and sip a Santa Barbara County Chardonnay…are we dining at one of Santa Barbara’s fine white-tablecloth restaurants? Nope. We’re on a boat. A 47-foot luxury sailing catamaran, to be exact. After six successful chartering seasons in the Virgin Islands on their cat, Green Flash, Santa Barbarans Sherri and Arthur McNary have brought their super-sleek boat to Santa Barbara. They’re now sailing luxe sunset cruises and Channel Islands charters out of Santa Barbara Harbor. “We’re super excited to share the experience of being out on the beautiful local waters in Green Flash…it’s something new for Santa Barbara,” says Sherri. With uber-capable captain Arthur at the helm, Sherri whips up creative “garden to galley” menus spotlighting fresh local ingredients. As you glide past bustling Stearns Wharf you might nibble local lobster cakes with jalapeno-cilantro sauce or slurp a zippy gazpacho shooter. Half-day (four hours), full day (eight hours), overnight Channel Islands adventures, and custom-tailored trips are available. Spring Break Lunch has never tasted fresher

A

t home, I munch salads for breakfast (poached eggs over Shepard’s Lettuce is great), often for lunch (as a main course) or dinner (on the side). When going out for lunch, I often want more of the same. The wide selection of salad offerings downtown at opal and in Montecito at The Montecito Café, provide so many choices, that a person could dine at both places once a week without getting bored. The menu at Opal has more than ten salads to choose from ranging from an appetizer-size classic Caesar ($7.95) to fancier entrée size salads ($11.50-$14.95). Who can resist Warm Fried Brie on Fresh Arugula and Watercress or the Grilled Eggplant and Grilled Portobello Mushroom Salad? The opal Cobb is a popular stand-by, but the Pesto Sautéed Bay Scallop Salad or Seafood Salad on Baby Spinach and gourmet greens are also “local favorites” like the one pictured above, Seared Fresh Diver Sea Scallops on Baby Arugula and Watercress with their Honey Herb Vinaigrette, Fresh Mango, Avocado

and Crispy Parsnip. What a lunch! Popular entrée size “Salad Bowls” ($11-$22) at The Montecito Café include Idaho Trout, serviced over spinach and butter lettuce with avocado and a Cucumber and Dill dressing; a Half a papaya filled with Dungeness Crab and curry sauce with toasted almonds or the Seared Ahi over cucumber noodles. The Greek-style salad with homemade grilled lamb sausage, baby spinach, roasted peppers and ripe tomatoes in a Valpreso Feta and Lemon dressing, is a tasty meal in itself, and then some. With salads like these at these two popular, established Santa Barbara dining spots, chances are you will want to come back again and again…and yet, again, in order to try them all. —Leslie A. Living Large in a Cozy Kitchen By Joanna Krenich

C

ooking in a small kitchen doesn’t mean settling for small pleasures. Living in a small space or cooking with just a few ingredients doesn’t have to be meager living or boring. Simple living doesn’t automatically equate to living primitive, like a college student eating Top Ramen every night. It all comes down to being more intentional in your choices. Maximizing the function and enhancing the tastes that come out of your cozy cooking space can create a renewed sense of joy and appreciation for life – bringing healthy smiles to your family, friends and you. The smaller the space the more important it is that each component serves multiple functions. Whether you live in a studio apartment or mobile home – with a kitchen the size of shoebox – there are easy and cost-effective ways to maximize function without compromising style. It’s also important to focus on high quality ingredients and kitchen tools. Although it may cost a little more, quality cookware is a better investment in your quality of life and long-term health. It’s better than storing a bunch of appliances you seldom use. Do you really need five sizes of pots or three frying pans when just one or two will do the trick? To get the most enjoyment from a meal don’t be shy about bringing boldness and creativity to your plate with flavors that zing! Economizing is not 24

about reducing quality or imagination, either. In reality, the opposite is true. Minimalism requires smarter choices. The new Californian-style of cooking focuses on finding combining the freshest foods from your local farmers market. The goal is to let the main ingredients speak for themselves. Add as little as possible and let the natural flavors accentuate their innate qualities. Fresh natural food never needs to be covered up with loads of butter, spices or sauces. Let the main ingredient be the focal point of the dish. Living with less doesn’t mean living plainly, either. Bamboo is one of the earth’s simplest, yet most widely used building materials and adds affordable benefits in the kitchen, too. Bamboo is versatile and attractive. In design, it offers a clean, natural look while elevating the space. Bamboo surfaces are kind to the earth and more durable than other engineered woods or manufactured solid surface products. Bamboo counters, for example, eliminate the need for pulling out a cutting board each time you need to slice and dice. And it can maximize a small counter space while adding a natural look. Clean up and after-care is easier, too. Bamboo is bacteria- and mildew resistant – an important advantage in food preparation. Best of all, it’s an inexpensive, plentiful, fast-growing renewable resource. Another way to simplify the kitchen is by installing a single stainless steel industrial-sized deep sink instead of a traditional white ceramic sink. Stainless w w w. f o o d – h o m e . c o m

steel is more durable, resists stains and scratches, and accommodates large pots and pans better for washing while offering a sleek, high-end vibe. A retractable, commercialstyle spray hose faucet is another way to make food prep food and cleanup a breeze. Finally, one of the best earth-wise home shopping tips that many of us forget about is NOT buying a case of bottled water. Replace thousands of bottles a year that you’re adding to the waste stream by installing a reverse osmosis water filter under the sink. Under sink water filter systems are inexpensive to buy, easy to install, and your water will be crystal clear and tasty. Fresh from Joanna’s Kitchen SCALLOPS (ALMOST) CEVICHE, WITH GRAPEFRUIT BASIL SALAD Serves: 2 Using high quality ingredients is essential when I am cooking. Shopping local, and in season, is a good starting point to insure you are getting the best produce available. My latest trip to the Santa Barbara Fish Market rewarded me with beautiful scallops. SBFM are my favorite source for fresh, local and sustainably-sourced seafood. They provide seafood to the Central Coast’s best restaurants and grocery stores. I was in the mood for something light that required little prep or standing over a hot stove because it was yet another day in the 80s, like many of our California winter days this year. The delicate, sweet nature of the scallops inspired me to do an almost-ceviche-style dish with nearly no cooking required. The result was something that was crisp on the palate, delicious and satisfying. Best of all, it required only a few ingredients. No need for a huge grocery list or tons of storage. Ingredients: Scallops – 6 large Olive oil – 2 tablespoons Fresh lemons – 2 Grapefruit – 1 Cayenne pepper and sea salt – Dash Soak scallops in fresh lemon juice for at least 4 hours in fridge. Remove and let rest on a chopping board for about 15 min. Place in a sauté pan on high heat with olive oil, searing scallops for 2 min. on one side, only. The lemon and oil will caramelize adding a nice sweetness and light crunch. Plate and drizzle the drippings over the scallops. Chop grapefruit into small cubes, removing any white or hard pieces. Roughly chop basil and toss lightly with grapefruit, adding a dash of cayenne and sea salt. Pair with your favorite champagne and have yourself a delicious, simple evening. charming and talented couple, Gillian and Alam Muralles, have opened a beautiful gluten free pastry shop on State Street. Their cases are filled with some of the most beautifully designed cakes to ever hit any special event in Santa Barbara, and the inspiration for these culinary delights is a combination of Alan’s restaurant career and Gillian’s outstanding training at the Pasadena Culinary Institute of America. As a child Gillian was diagnosed with Celiac disease and her mother began teaching her to cook meals using ingredients that would keep her well. “Our opening was very soft to allow people to come in and decide for themselves about the outstanding quality of our gluten free menu selections. We are working to develop a slow and successful customer base of patrons who will love our delicious and unique cakes,” said Gillian Muralles. The ambiance of the new patisserie is described by locals as totally French, and offers a very pleasant atmosphere to enjoy cakes, cookies and pastries to enjoy with fine tea and coffee while taking a break from shopping. Their Bananas Foster Cake, Berry Patch Cake and Carrot Spice Cake are so seductive looking that it becomes a challenge to select one. It’s hard to believe they are so beautiful and gluten-free as well. For parents who are looking for unique gluten-free birthday cakes for their children Lilac Patisserie has the delicious answer. The current menu includes lovely selection of fine baked goods, and now the couple has launched their lunch menu which includes top of the line luncheon sandwiches made with their homemade bread, house made soups and fresh salads. —By Bonnie Carroll Located at 1017 State Street 1017 State Street next door to Churchill Jewelers Visit: www.lilacpatisserie.com. w w w. f o o d – h o m e . c o m

Wine Collection of El Paseo Sip and swirl downtown

I

t’s a good thing there are a plenty of places to dine within wine spittin’ distance of the half a dozen elegant wine tasting rooms in downtown Santa Barbara’s historic El Paseo. Dubbed the Wine Collection of El Paseo, by Jamie Slone who opened his eponymous wine tasting room in the prime de la Guerra entrance into the complex, each tasting room has it’s own personality as well as an ever-changing array of terrific Santa Barbara County wines to sip, swirl and purchase. Doug Margerum, who launched The Wine Cask restaurant in El Paseo with his family in 1981, started pouring his own wines at Intermezzo, followed by a separate Margerum Tasting Room that opened in 2010 which has morphed into two wine tasting rooms that now include MWC 32, showcasing his reserve wines. Jim Clendenen’s Au Bon Climat followed suit, joined by Grassini, Happy Canyon and new kid on the block, Jamie Sloan, to round out the Collection. (Doug Margerum is also winemaker for Happy Canyon and Jamie Sloan vintages). Each Wine Collection tasting room in the rambling complex is as unique as their pours. The

atmosphere at Happy Canyon is like entering the home of a wealthy polo patron (winery founder, Tom Barrack, is, in fact, just this). Grassini has more of an old Western vibe, with it’s weathered wood interior. MWC 32 features a cozy tasting bar and brother Hugh Margerum’s fine contemporary artwork hangs on the walls. Both Margerum tasting rooms have a family and friends slideshow (locals will recognize pals). The leather furnishings combined with Moroccan motif and fine fabrics at Jamie Sloan’s cool space add a classy, but comfortable stop, with a private tasting room, to the mix. These crown jewels of S.B. county winemaking makes this a one-stop wine tasting destination for grown-ups looking for a special place to savor the fermented grapes of our region without having to drive over San Marcos Pass. Tasting fees range from $10-$30 and hours are noon – 6 p.m. But enthusiastic Jamie Sloan and his wife Kym, have been known to “keep the party going” even later! —Leslie A. For grilled cheese sandwiches: 4 slices sourdough or preferred bread 6 slices of your favorite melting cheese 2+ Tbsps. salted butter In a pot, cover beans with 2 inches of water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let stand, uncovered, for 1 hour. Drain beans in a colander and rinse. Cook onions in oil in an 8-quart pot over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add beans, broth, 1 quart of water, cheese rind, salt, pepper, bay leaf and rosemary and simmer, uncovered, until beans are just tender, about 50 minutes. While soup is simmering, brown sausage in batches in a heavy skillet over moderate heat, turning, then transfer to paper towels to drain. Stir carrots into soup and simmer 5 minutes. Stir in kale, sausage and remaining quart of water and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until kale is tender, 12 to 15 minutes. Season soup with salt and pepper. To make the grilled cheese, heat 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Place two cheese slices between two slices of bread. Press together to form a sandwich and place in the skillet. Cook until golden on the bottom, 3 to 5 minutes. Flip, adding more butter to the pan if needed, and w w w. f o o d – h o m e . c o m

cook until the other side is golden and the cheese melts, 3 to 5 more minutes. Repeat for the second sandwich. Serve with soup. Note: This soup is best if made 1 or 2 days ahead. Cool completely, uncovered, then chill, covered. Thin with water if necessary

CHAYOTE RISOTTO

5 sides or 2 large entrées. I love chayote squash; the entire vegetable is edible, and they can easily replace zucchini in most recipes. I like to initially sauté the veggies in two pans for speed, but you can do it with one and just do batches if you’d like. Avoid overcrowding to nicely caramelize the veggies for flavor. 1 chayote squash 1 orange bell pepper 2 large Portobello mushrooms, stemmed 1 medium red onion 1/3 cup olive oil (for veggies) ¼ cup olive oil (for rice) 1 cup Arborio rice Salt & pepper to taste 32 oz. vegetable stock FOOD & HOME

Dice the vegetables to about ½ an inch. Heat two large sauté pans over high heat and then add the 1/3 cup of olive oil between the two pans. Sauté the vegetables over high heat till tender. When the first pan is done, set the veggies aside and in the same hot pan add the ¼ cup olive oil and the rice. Over high heat, toss four minutes until it gets a little color. I like to deglaze that second sauté pan with vegetable stock before adding it into the main pan to get up all that nice caramelized flavor. Add 8 oz. of the vegetable stock to the rice, letting it steam; and reduce then add all the sautéed veggies. Gradually adding in 16 oz. of stock, let it reduce down each time, tossing occasionally. Once down to just moist, add another 8 oz. stock. It’s fine to fiddle around the kitchen a bit; sauté some sausages in that second pan once it’s empty or toss a salad, just be mindful of your risotto as it reduces, give it a stir now and again, and leave the heat high. Taste it for doneness and seasoning; remember it’s a starch so you’ll want to be generous with salt and pepper. Finish it with the butter and cheese if desired, otherwise it’s quite delicious without it.

ROMA RISOTTO

With a wonderful creamy, tomato flavor and lots of nutrients from all the spinach, this recipe is actually the lowest in calories and makes a filling and very satisfying risotto, easily prepared in roughly 35 minutes. ¼ cup olive oil 1 yellow bell pepper, ½ inch dice 1 onion, ½ inch dice Salt & pepper to taste 4 cloves garlic, chopped fine 1 cup Arborio rice 28 oz. chicken broth (or vegetable stock) 3 roma tomatoes, ½ inch dice 2 packed cups of baby spinach leaves Over high heat sauté the bell pepper and onion till tender, about four minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Then add the garlic and the rice at the same time leaving the heat on high. Toss and lightly brown for about four minutes. Then add 6 oz. of broth, cook down until nearly dry then add another 6 oz., reduce down again until just moist. Add in the tomatoes and another 4 oz. of the broth. Let it cook down again and add more broth when you stir the rice and it stays put leaving the bottom of the pan exposed; add another 12 oz. in 6 oz. increments again and keep that heat high and toss it occasionally. Taste it for doneness and seasoning. Finish it with the spinach, tossing it and just letting it wilt into the risotto. Allow it to rest 5 minutes before serving.

ASPARAGUS AND YOUNG BLACK KALE RISOTTO

I love incorporating kale into family dishes and they really like this rustic dish. It’s also wonderful with sausages. In this I use white wine but we make many risotw w w. f o o d – h o m e . c o m

tos with red wine as well. It’s just as delicious and gets a beautiful color from the wine so do try that some time too. 2 bu. black kale 1 bu. asparagus (not baby; the bigger the better) 3 shallots or a small yellow onion, diced 1 cup Arborio rice 1 bottle of a sweeter white wine 2 cups chicken stock Salt & pepper to taste 2/3 cup parmesan Get everything ready; rinse the kale well and cut whole bunches every 3/4ths of an inch until you get to the “stemy” part; you can pop those in your compost bin. Rinse and cut the asparagus at an angle about every 3/4ths of an inch; don’t use the tough ends. Open the wine. Heat a very large sauté pan (12-14”) on high heat. Sauté the shallots, adding the asparagus after a few minutes for about ten minutes total. Add the rice to the pan and toss around for about four minutes. Stir in about 6 oz. of the wine at a time and allow that to reduce after each addition, keeping the heat high. When the bottle of wine is about half used, add in the kale, tossing and allowing to wilt in; season with salt and pepper to taste. Continue adding in wine and then the chicken stock, reducing it down 6-8 oz. at a time. Don’t worry about the kale, it steams in the reducing wine and cooks, working itself into the risotto as you stir. Check for doneness and w w w. f o o d – h o m e . c o m

seasoning; this dish takes about 40 minutes total to cook. Finish the risotto by stirring in the parmesan and allowing it to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

OVEN ROASTED WHITE POTATOES WITH FRESH HERBS

(8 servings) I’m really enjoying white potatoes lately for their creaminess, but red potatoes work equally well. Use one pound for each three guests. 3 lb. young white potatoes 2 Tb. fresh rosemary leaves 2 Tb. minced garlic Fresh ground pepper ¼ cup olive oil 2 Tb. water coarse or flake salt to taste 2 Tb. fresh thyme or rosemary flowers to garnish after baking Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Cut potatoes into bite-size chunks and toss in a bowl with rosemary, garlic, pepper, oil and water. Spread out on a vegetable oil-sprayed sheet pan in a single layer and bake till golden, tossing around with a metal spatula mid-way. After baking sprinkle with coarse salt generously and garnish with rosemary flowers if you have any or chopped fresh thyme or Italian parsley. FOOD & HOME

HOME COOKING CHIANTI GRILLED BEEF

Marinated overnight and then grilled the beef gains a deliciously unique flavor. Any cut benefits from this recipe, try top sirloin, New York steaks, tri-tip or tenderloin. For two or three pounds of beef: ½ cup cloves garlic 5 spears fresh rosemary 2 cups decent Chianti wine 2 cups olive oil coarse sea salt and fresh ground pepper In a large sealable baggie pound and bruise the garlic and rosemary to release the flavors. If the baggie punctures, use another now and put in the beef, wine and oil. Seal it up and leave it to marinate overnight, refrigerated. Season generously with salt and pepper then grill to medium-rare or as you choose.

SAMBUCA MARINATED PROSCIUTTOWRAPPED SHRIMP WITH ROSEMARY

Sublime, rustically elegant fare, everyone loves the unique combination of these flavors. 1.5 lb. 21/25 size raw peeled shrimp 1/2 cup Sambuca 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup rosemary salt and pepper to taste 8 thin slices Prosciutto (approx. 5 oz.) In a baggie marinate the shrimp in the Sambuca, oil and rosemary for two hours, refrigerated. Spray with vegetable or olive oil spray. To grill, wrap about a quarter of a slice of Prosciutto around each shrimp letting some of the rosemary leave cling to the meat. Secure with a skewer. Grill leaving the skewer off the direct heat or they can be baked to cook through and crisp in a hot oven with great results.

Oh yeah, it’s also locally made. Turns out that all is possible with a new product produced by Ojai Granola Girl, in Ojai California. Owner and founder Kelley D’Angelo “I am excited to offer, in a time where we are surrounded by processed food full of fillers and unnatural ingredients, a healthy alternative. A satiating food made from real ingredients that taste unbelievably good.
Real food for real healthy people!” Though it is marketed as a grain free granola, D’Angelo says many of her customers enjoy it as a quick snack or as a topping to ice cream and other desserts. It’s also a complete breakfast when you add almond milk and fresh berries. With six flavors and four different sizes most everyone will find a grain-free granola option to fit both taste and budget. f you’re planning to bring the bubbly with you to your Sunday brunch, you might consider one of these new offering from winemaker Eli Parker of Fess Parker Vineyards in Los Olivos. Both labels pair well with most brunch fare and are well worth the corkage fees. So have a zesty good time! The 2013 Fesstivity Blanc de Blancs has bright, fresh aromas of citrus and lemongrass with hints of biscuit and a subtle minerality. Flavors of green apple, citrus and mineral notes are made more complex with hints of caramel and toast. Can be enjoyed by itself as an aperitif but also pairs exceedingly well with shellfish, crab cakes and hard cheeses such as aged Gouda. The 2013 Fesstivity Brut Rose makes an impression with generous aromas of pink grapefruit, raspberry, passion fruit and a hint of orange zest. Bright flavors of citrus/ grapefruit, vanilla, raspberry and cranberry are present on the pleasantly tangy palate and the finish lingers with a nice, quenching acidity. Delicious on it’s own as an aperitif it also pairs beautifully with salmon, crab cakes and an assortment of triple cream cheeses. Both vintages are available at The Bubble Shack 2970 Grand Avenue Los Olivos, (805) 688-8276 or the Santa Barbara Wine Collective 131 Anacapa Street Santa Barbara, (805) 456-2700.

The Beauty of Bamboo

I

f you’re looking for innovative design, great value and a smaller carbon footprint, take part in helping the planet, Bamboo is a great choice when compared to hardwood because it grows to maturity in 5 years or less, making it one of the fastest growing and sustainable plants on earth and harder than oak. Bamboo is one of the best plants on the earth to sequester carbon. It also releases about 35 percent more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees. Appreciated for centuries for its versatility and beauty, the warm, rich tones of bamboo make it a star material for designers. Variation in grain and color helps to create the real beauty of natural bamboo. For Your Home Furniture in downtown Ventura features a wide variety of Greenington furniture, the leader in Bamboo furniture. Greenington uses only mature Moso bamboo at least 5 years old. This ensures maximum strength, hardness and stability for all their products. For more info visit www.fyhfurn.com or call 805641-1919.

The fashion of

Flatware A statement of all things dining By Leslie A. Westbrook Photos by Kim Reierson

T

he bright, airy two-story 2,100 square foot showroom of Coast 2 Coast Collection sparkles with everything from crystal to china to flatware for the perfect table settings. Owner Holly Murphy, along with general manager Annie Williams, and a friendly staff of seven are there to serve with a smile. “Old-timers say they are reminded of Hunt’s China Shop,” said Annie. Hunt’s was the venerable china, silver, wedding and gift shop in Santa Barbara from 1871 until they closed in the late 1980s. Digging into flatware history is a fascinating subject. It began with spoons – pre-historic people used shells, the Romans used bronze, and royalty ate with gold and silver spoons in the Middle Ages, while regular folks slurped their soup with wood or horn utensils. Pewter came into use around the 14th century. Forks trace their origins back to the times of the Greeks, but it wasn’t until 1553 that Catherine de’ Medici brought forks from Italy to France for her marriage to King Henry II. Silverware placement reflects fashion history: forks were placed downward in English country homes when lace ruffle cuffs might get caught in the tines. Fast forward to the 21rst century, and both new and old materials are to be found at Coast 2 Coast Collection. Match is an Italian line of pewter flatware reflecting the past that can be engraved with initials. There are more than two-dozen patterns to choose from Christofle the historic French company founded in 1830 that uses a “100 hands” process in the making of each piece. Choose from fine silver-plate and sterling silver flatware ranging from traditional to contemporary to Jardin D’Eden, an elegant handengraved design. “Christofle can be put in the dishwasher and is meant to be used everyday. The patina improves with age. When people hear that, it changes their perception of it just being used for formal dining, “ Annie Williams informed me. (continued)

HOME STYLE Coast 2 Coast is the only store to carry Christofle between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Wedding Bells

“When a bride and groom register here, it usually starts with the china and then flatware comes into play. Some brides choose Christofle because they know it will be in their family forever. Others choose stainless for budget. People pick flatware to fit their lifestyle,” says Holly. Display vitrines at the Four Seasons Biltmore and Bacara Resort and Spa have lured bridal registry customers to the showroom – and Coast 2 Coast ships anywhere in the country.

The Personal Touch

With so much to choose from, how does a customer decide? “We clear off a table and start with a blank canvas,” Holly said, “We talk, set out plates and try different patterns of flatware – formal, rustic or in-between - to see what works.” The staff makes house calls with china, flatware and crystal, setting the table with several patterns to see what works. They will lend samples “on approval” so a customer can see how it fits in their environment. “A customer first comes in and we determine what they are looking for,” noted Annie, who has 20 years of interior design experience, “It makes a difference to see the pieces in their environment, where home lighting, ambiance and coloration is different.” Hermes mosaic china matched the sconces in one customer’s dining room, which wouldn’t have been noticed otherwise. “We love working with our customers to pick the perfect table setting. We strive for high customer service and make their experience enjoyable with happy result. We want them to love what they are getting here!” Holly concluded. DESIGN

On A Clear Day The blending of the inside to the outside By Leslie A. Westbrook

I

f the eyes are the window to your soul, perhaps windows provide a view to the soul of the outside world. If we are lucky, they offer peeks of sunsets and sunrises or allow us to gaze at clouds or stars. They offer warmth and protection from wind and rain, while allowing us to experience the universe. We fling them open to let breezes cool us; we close them to protect ourselves from the elements. But what if you’ve been staring out your rather small living room, dining room, or bedroom windows imagining, what would it be like if you were to replace them with a wall of glass doors that could open up your rooms to the views, fresh air and expand your living space? A solution could be folding and sliding glass doors. These have become a very popular remodeling option chosen by homeowners. Savvy Santa Barbara architects, including Ellen Bildsten and Tom Ochsner, also love these options. These design ideas can be used in houses both grand and small. Architect Tom Ochsner, AIA, incorporated LaCantina doors in the remodel of a 700 square foot West Beach unit in a triplex. “I completely gutted the space and, in addition to other changes, used the bi-fold French doors to make the space feel larger.” LaCantina, a well-respected California company based in Oceanside, manufactures two types of doors – the bi-folding accordion style door and a multi-track sliding door. The doors are made of thick gauge, extruded aluminum and come in three standard colors (bronze, standard aluminum and white), but can also be custom ordered to match any color of existing windows or architectural details. La Cantina also has an optional wood interior. The unique folding systems are top hung with the highest quality hardware for smooth operation and the multi slides have a custom designed rolling hardware and assembly for smooth and effortless operation. The products also offer a wide range of glass options including tinted, laminated and triple pane to meet various design and performance requirements. Decades of innovation and engineering have gone into the development of the panels, frames and sills to ensure smooth performance and operation for a generation of use. (continued)

“We get a lot of homeowners looking to open up their living spaces,” notes Fisher. “These units are often a design focal point of a project. We educate our clients with product and budgetary information. We also have numerous displays in our design center showroom so that our customers can fully understand the functionality.” Additionally, Fisher provides referrals for dependable, licensed contractors for professional installation.

F

isher likes the versatility of the custom-designed configurations. The bi-fold doors operate in many ways. Doors that fold back on themselves can swing in or swing out. A “single door” – called a daily door – allows a person to enter and exit a room, without opening up the entire system. “Indoor-outdoor living and the lifestyle that we are fortunate to experience here on the Central Coast is perfect for having the doors wide open to creating larger spaces to entertain and enjoy,” said Fisher. The doors use standard lowE glass and are weather rated. Another great feature is that the frames are narrow, which maximizes daylight and doesn’t cut in on the view. One has to wonder if it’s any coincidence that the company name is Spanish for a type of bar? Perhaps not…their latest product is a bi-folding window that Fisher says is perfect with its flush guide on the countertop for easy pass-through for an indoor/ outdoor bar from your kitchen. Start blending the margaritas! LaCatalina door and window products are available at Hayward Design Center, 417 Rose Ave, Santa Barbara 805-965-7772, www. haywardlumber.com

Living Walls

The natural solution to a private space by

alls, hedges and fences; call them what you will, they all serve the same purpose, to keep reality at bay. With a little imagination and creativity you can transform your garden into your own private oasis using living walls. Whether the purpose is to create privacy, block out noise or shelter from sun or wind there are many ways to accomplish this and the one you choose depends on your situation. Hedges are one option, but require time and energy to maintain and if not done properly can turn into a wall of sticks; not very appealing. w w w. f o o d – h o m e . c o m

Here’s a situation we have encountered many times. A client wants to block a close-up view (of the street and cars for example) and dampen noise but maintain a distant view of the mountains or ocean. There are a number of ways this can be accomplished. The best way to block noise is a solid barrier such as a wall, but walls can be expensive and may also block views. Using some imagination, you can create a “Berm”, which per the dictionary is “An artificial ridge or embankment”. Plant a variety of low and mediumgrowing shrubbery on and around the “ridge” and the Berm will dampen the noise and the plants become a living enclosure. Another creative solution is planting in containers. This is especially useful if you entertain. Imagine if you will, that you have a dozen or so large pots, planted with a variety of your favorite trees. Citrus, Olives, Privet, Juniper, Cypress, Guavas, etc. all thrive in containers, by the way. Arranged on a patio, they become moveable, living dividers so that depending on the occasion you can reposition them to create cozy spaces or an expansive one. Think cozy nook one day and dance floor the next. Add strings of lights and the ambience is complete. Even if your idea of entertaining consists of talking shop with the birds that come to visit your little Eden, the moveable pot garden is wonderful. I especially like pots arranged on gravel, whether a patio or meandering path. The idea of a garden that can change depending on the mood or event appeals to me and may appeal to you. We started off talking about hedges and screens; I think moveable hedges and screens are kind of ingenious. On Valentine’s Day Chris and I went to Lotusland where you can see the imaginative employment of “living walls”. There is for instance, the “Theater Garden” where Podocarpus hedges serve as stage backdrop and “theater wings”. Each garden is expertly separated from the other by strategically placed walls of plants. I say “walls of plants” because they are not all hedges per se, but actual living partitions that visually conceal the next destination. No matter your garden dream; increase privacy, block unwanted views or dampen noise or light “living walls” may be the perfect solution. The only thing that can stop you now is your imagination.

as Cascadas…a Montecito estate as majestic as its name, perfectly placed between coastal mountain vistas and panoramic Pacific Ocean views is one of Santa Barbara’s most prized properties. Designed and constructed by Loren Solin of Solin Design, the splendor and grandeur of this three-acre estate begins as you enter the classic Mexican gateway and follow the gently curving driveway to the motor court. Designed as an authentic Mexican Hacienda with hand sculptured stone, imported cantera columns, Saltillo tile, carved stone fireplaces, fountains and expansive terraces, the craftsmanship and artistic detail truly reflect the spirit of Hispanic artisans from years gone by. Interior features include dramatic entry archways to a Great Room with hand painted hewn beams, 14-foot ceilings, hand carved stone fireplace and an authentic “Cantina”, a

fully equipped working bar. The gracious dining room, featuring a second fireplace, leads out to a covered terrace with expansive views of the gardens, pool and ocean. The gourmet kitchen includes a large butler’s pantry, breakfast room with fireplace and a private outdoor dining terrace with a built in BBQ. The bedrooms include an elegant master suite with a fireplace, ocean view terrace and a spacious bath with dressing areas. There are three additional bedroom suites, each with private tiled baths and two private studies. The downstairs features an expansive rec room, gym, custom designed home theater and wine grotto with tasting room and refrigerated wine storage. Grand Hacienda doors open on to terraces of cantera stone, a uniquely quarried, volcanic rock that is mined exclusively in various regions of Mexico and Central America. Its name derives from the Spanish word for quarry. The w w w. f o o d – h o m e . c o m

private courtyards provide a retreat where purple jasmine trails on antiqued wrought iron railings and the sound of cascading water from the fountains calms the soul. An old-world aqueduct gently moves water from a courtyard fountain to a water drop that splashes on to a 20-x 50-foot solar heated pool and spa. The poolside Cabana provides for comfortable entertaining. “Las Cascadas”…luxurious in scale, lavish in detail…an artful melding of the splendor of old Mexico and charm of Santa Barbara living. THE ULTIMATE LIFESTYLE DESTINATION

Although we are in the business of selling property, our real product is lifestyle-‐ we sell the greatest place to call home in the world. All the big city you could ever want is right down the road a bit, and the rest of the world is only an airport away. Yet, we enjoy an unparalleled geographical isolation dictated by mountains and sea, that affords us both Mediteranean climate and culture; a clean, safe, aesthetically intoxicating special piece of the planet. When you compare real estate values with other “exclusive” locales, you’ll find that you can’t afford not to own a home here...
