Bryant & Sons
I
n 1965 Bob Bryant set up shop in El Paseo. The idea was simple, help Santa Barbaran’s mark their special occasions with the finest in jewelry and time pieces. Turns out he was on to something. For over 50 years people have been making purchases at Bryant and Son’s for weddings, anniversaries, graduations, holidays or just because. The unique combination of a half century of acquired inventory and owning the original building allow Bryant and Son’s to offer attractive prices and selection for all customers. “We’re seeing multiple generations coming to us to help with their special occasions. It’s a rewarding part of the business, we get to know the families and watch them grow.” Michael Bryant, son of founder Bob Bryant explains the Bryant and Son’s approach. “We’ve seen lots of changes in the business over the years but one thing remains constant, our product makes people happy. Jewelry isn’t just a onetime purchase, we’ve had pieces passed down through three generations.” 50 years in Santa Barbara is no easy feat, Bryant and Son’s longevity is a testament to the loyalty of thousands of customers. Reputations such as these are created one piece of jewelry at a time. Stop into Bryant and Son’s and bring home a piece of Santa Barbara. Welcome
to Santa Barbara
N
ice job on finding your way to Santa Barbara, chances are you heard something that lured you to this idyllic spot. If this is your first trip don’t be in too big a hurry to see everything this time, odds are you will be back. Allow the Pocket Concierge to be your guide for what to do and where to go. The restaurants offer cuisine that is interesting and delicious, décor ranging from casual to dressy and every price range is represented. Recreation of every type is readily available; being outdoors is a big part of the appeal or our American Riviera. Visiting our museums will give you an appreciation for all that has taken place on the South Coast for the last 200 years or so. Just about every corner of Santa Barbara has a story, simply walk the streets and read the plaques to gather tidbits of the city’s’ rich history. We are big on charm and quaint, the beaches are beautiful and the mountains offer breathtaking vistas of one of the best small towns in America. I am not making that up, Conde Nast Traveler put us on the list in 2018 and I‘m telling everybody who will listen. Wherever you go the weather will be with you and that’s most often a good thing. We win awards for climate too; US News and World Report chose Santa Barbara as the best city in the nation for weather in 2018. Santa Barbara averages 79 cloudy days a year with temperatures mostly in the 70’s. Only 3 days a year above 90 and 6 nights below freezing. Like I said, best in the country. We are known for wine around these parts, tasting rooms are plentiful in the downtown and funk zone areas. There is much knowledge to be shared in those tasting rooms and you will be reminded that we can ship purchases to most states in the US. The effect of the movie Sideways has faded some, while the 2004 Paul Giamatti film brought great notoriety to the area, the movie’s popularity added about $10 a bottle to the prices of our Pinot Noir vintages. I am happy to report, good deals can now be found on whatever grape you fancy. So there you have it, Santa Barbara has great restaurants, wine, weather and you might see Oprah. Make certain you plan your next trip around one of our many festivals, Solstice, Fiesta, The International film festival etc. and we’ll show you we know how to throw a party. Until then keep Santa Barbara in mind and we’ll save a spot for you in the front of the line.

Rare & Remarkable
at the Santa Barbara Zoo
I
s there any zoo that has giraffes with a view of the beach? Or a penguin who wears a shoe? How about an “ant hill” that kids can slide down? The Santa Barbara Zoo has all this and more, featuring 144 remarkable species, many of which are endangered or rare. Perched on a hillside overlooking the ocean, the Zoo was once a grand estate. Graceful Masai giraffes now roam in what once was a garden across from East Beach, with views of the public beach and volleyball courts. Two gangly calves were born here last year: Chad in March and Parker in August. Nearby, brothers Nzinga (age 18) and Bangori (age 12), Western lowland gorillas, forage for fruits and veggies hidden by keepers before the Zoo opened for the day, or rest near the viewing area’s glass window. They are a “bachelor troop,” similar to those found in their native Africa. All gorillas face major challenges in the wild, and are critically endangered. North America’s largest land bird, the California condor has come back from only 22 individual birds in the 1980s, to more than 450 today. Five of these highly endangered species are in residence in the Zoo’s large aviary with panoramic views of the city of Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Mountains. Zoo staff help monitor released condors breeding in the wild, about 40 miles away. Amur leopards are the most endangered big cat on the planet—and among the most beautiful. A young female named Ajax recently arrived from an English zoo to help diversify the North American genepool of this Asian species. We’ll soon be seeing spots, if she mates with the Zoo’s male, Wyatt. She likes to climb; look for her high in the exhibit. After penguin Lucky hatched at the Zoo in 2010, keepers noticed that his right foot did not develop properly, and he could not swim or walk well. Lucky faced possible death due to continued infections. Teva, the outdoor shoe company, created a custom-made shoe for the young penguin, allowing him to join the Zoo’s Humboldt penguin colony, where he lives to this day. Don’t miss the Kallman Family Play Area, with its oversized spider’s web, bird’s nest, lily pads and toadstools, plus the ant hill which children love to slide down on cardboard. It’s wild! The Santa Barbara Zoo is located just off Cabrillo Blvd. at East Beach, (805) 962-5339, www.sbzoo.org 13

here can I get a good steak”? “Who has good seafood?” Travelers to Santa Barbara often ask one or both of these questions, conveniently the answer to both is Holdren’s Steak and Seafood at 512 State street. Fashioned after the classic New York steakhouse, Holdren’s has the feel of quality. Come sit in a big red leather booth, pour over a well crafted wine list, choose premium quality steaks, chops or seafood presented by knowledgeable servers. Debuting in Santa Barbara in 1999, Holdren’s has set the standard for fine dining in downtown Santa Barbara. If you came for beef, Holdren’s has you covered, Filet Mignon, Top Sirloin, Porterhouse, NY Strip or Rib Eye. If you’re feeling extreme, have them bring the Cowboy Cut, a one and a half pound bone in Rib Eye served with onion rings and a twice baked potato. The freshest locally sourced fish is always a correct choice at Holdren’s. Pan seared Halibut or Mesquite grilled Salmon are two of the more popular items on Holdren’s extensive menu. Live large with an 8 to 10 inch Lobster tail charbroiled and served with drawn butter. Order the Sesame seared Hawaiian Ahi, baked Sea Bass, Panko Parmesean Sand Dabs or Bacon Wrapped jumbo Scallops and heads will turn as your plate arrives at the table. We suggest you start your Holdren’s experience with a hand crafted cocktail or a top shelf single malt scotch. Local breweries have offerings on tap and the wine list is as extensive as it is unique. Proximity to one of the best wine regions in the world gives Holdren’s first choice on some of the premiere vintages from our local wineries. Holdren’s patio is a perfect spot to people watch and take in the view of the State street. Atmosphere is a big part of the dining experience and Holdren’s is obsessed with creating exceptional surroundings. Cajun Kitchen
I
n a town known for a wealth of food choices, how does one restaurant stand out from the crowd? Cajun Kitchen started out simply enough, a small restaurant with a reputation for a good breakfast and lots of it. Word got around and soon one restaurant wasn’t enough, nor was two, then three and so it went. Today Cajun Kitchen covers all of Santa Barbara and Goleta because supply had to keep up with demand. Now the Cajun Kitchen family of restaurants has two stores in Goleta near the university, two in Santa Barbara and one in Ventura. The reason for rapid expansion of the empire is simple, great food at great price. As easy as that sounds, it’s hard to do. Every day begins early at Cajun Kitchen, Goleta opens at 6am and in Santa Barbara the doors swing wide at 6:30am. Fresh Breakfast and Lunch is served with a southern theme and portions no one ever complains about. Traditional Cajun inspired breakfast includes, chicken fried steak with gravy, andoullie sausage, blackened salmon or catfish and crab cakes. All of the favorites are there too, any omelet you can imagine plus some dishes named after the long term employees like the Crazy Shirley Scramble or Roz’s Omelet. Buttermilk pancakes, blueberry pancakes, beignets, Belgian waffles or the famous French toast round out a hearty morning menu. Stick around for lunch and you’ll find Jambalaya, file gumbo, blackened catfish, blackened redfish, etouffee or a simple bowl of red beans and rice. Cajun Kitchen can cook a mean burger too, try the Ortega chile burger, the French dip or tuna melt. The menu has a wide range and won’t disappoint even the most discerning palate in your party . Conversation may slow when the food arrives at your table, most folks find it hard to resist attacking this type of temptation. Cajun Kitchen is quietly becoming the preferred stop for all visitors to Santa Barbara, no reason to miss a meal here comes to mind, it’s all good. A good breakfast or lunch at Cajun Kitchen and you may skip dinner all together. 29
Opal Restaurant & Bar
A
s you walk up State Street past the Arlington Theater be sure to notice one of Santa Barbara’s most inviting dining choices, Opal Restaurant and Bar. Owners Tina Takaya and Richard Yates have created a culinary jewel in downtown Santa Barbara. The Opal menu offers innovative California cuisine incorporating ingredients from around the world, complimented by a Wine Spectator award winning wine list. Creativity is evident in everything that is served, Executive Chef Felipe Barajas and Executive Sous Chef Gerardo Barajas make certain every detail is managed with style. While the chef team has been with Opal for over 20 years they are showing no sign of slowing down. Felipe and Gerardo are constantly bringing new ideas to the job while offering the favorites dishes that have defined Opal for over two decades. If you are looking for delicious and different, and really who isn’t, Opal will find a way to exceed your expectations. It has been rumored that Opal patrons were taking pictures of their food before we had cameras in phones, the dishes are that stunning. Try the Shredded Phyllo Wrapped Tiger Prawns Flash Fried with Coconut Curry Dipping Sauce. Make certain someone at your table orders the Arborio Risotto with Sauteed Wild Mushrooms, Fresh Asparagus and Artichokes. Whatever you decide on eating just may change when you see what is delivered to the table next to you, the presentation at Opal is second to none. Dessert is such a treat at Opal that not ordering something should only take place if you are late for the train. Choose “Like Water for Chocolate” a Belgian Callebaut Dark Chocolate and Raspberries. Guaranteed someone is going to want a bite. Pair it with a port or cognac and you will forget all about the movie you were going to see. You will be impressed by the staff, everyone who is hired was chosen for their heart and attention to detail. Everyone working at Opal believes and practices the Opal philosophy. People are hungry for more than “just great food”: we seek to create an experience that removes barriers and creates connection between people; one that ultimately nurtures the soul as well. Opal is open for dinner nightly at 5pm and lunch Monday thru Friday until 2:30pm. Located just up from the Arlington Theater at 1325 State Street. 30

Joe’s Cafe
Y
ou hear it all the time, people ask “Where do the locals go around here?” A good bet is to send them to Joe’s at the corner of State and Cota. Joe’s café has a rich and interesting history, which anyone seated at the bar will gladly expand upon. The legendary strength of the Joe’s cocktails could be the catalyst for the spirited conversation or maybe it’s just there’s a lot to tell. Founded in 1928 by Joe Ferrario, Joe’s is the quintessential tavern on the corner. Neither the depression nor prohibition could keep Joe’s from flourishing. In 1933 when liquor in public places became a thing again, Joe’s was perfectly positioned as the go to spot in Santa Barbara. Joe’s has changed hands a couple of times but no one ever dared to take the restaurant in a different direction. The hard to miss sign that former owner Harry Davis muscled through the city council in the fifties has now reached landmark status at 512 State Street. Every town has a place where people gather to chat, eat great steaks and sandwiches, sip cocktails and relax, away from the pressures of the day. In this town, that place is Joe’s café. The food at Joe’s is simple but never plain, delicious and within everyone’s budget. Steaks and seafood served with a large baked potato or the to-die-for French fries and salad are the standard fare. The Omaha tri-tip sandwich is a big seller alongside the world famous French Dip. For breakfast, lunch or dinner you will be treated to the one-of-a-kind service that’s a huge part of the Joe’s experience. Most of the crew has been with the company for a while, some for over 40 years. They know the restaurant and the city inside out. You want conversation, you want history, you want a stiff drink? You want Joe’s Café. Joe’s Café, 512 State Street, (805) 966-4638, www.joescafesb.com. 37

Sambo’s
B
reakfast on the Beach, nothing is more Santa Barbara than a fresh cup of coffee and a stack of pancakes with an ocean view. For sixty years the original Sambo’s been keeping the coffee hot and the pancakes fluffy from the same spot on Cabrillo Boulevard. The Santa Barbara property is the last surviving location of the more than 1100 Sambo’s restaurants that in the 70’s were in 47 states across the country. Chad Stevens, the grandson of Sam Batistone, one of the original partners of the Sambo’s empire is often found behind the counter and greeting the customers. Stevens took over the restaurant in 1998 and has continued the family tradition of great food, great service and always a full cup of coffee. The menu has changed a bit over the years to add some local flavor but you will still find the classic Eggs any way you like em, Hash Browns cooked just right, Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice and a basket of muffins with every meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant is refreshingly nostalgic. The art on the walls tell the story of Little Sambo and the Tiger. The booths and tables have a comfortable old school feel, breakfast or lunch at the counter takes you back to early California when every highway in the state had a diner for the weary traveler. The outdoor patio is perfect spot for a leisurely bite to eat while taking in the best view in town. Whether it’s breakfast or lunch, the Sambo’s menu will cover all the bases. Classic choices like the French Toast, Chicken Fried Steak and Corned Beef Hash and eggs will satisfy the comfort food craving. Juicy Burgers, High Stacked Deli Sandwiches and Sambo’s Tacos are a perfect call any time of day. Once there was a Sambo’s everywhere you traveled, now there is only one chance, the original Sambo’s on the beach in Santa Barbara open every day from 6:30 to 2:30. Classic Sambo’s memorabilia is available if you care to take a piece of Santa Barbara history home. 216 W Cabrillo Blvd., (805) 965-3269, sambosrestaurant.com 39
