CULTURE & HERITAGE
If you stay in Ibadan or you are visiting Ibadan, you have probably heard about this historic landmark. If you haven't, that’s too bad because you are missing out on something beautiful. Bower’s Tower is a memorial erected in 1936 and christened after the Late Captain Robert Lister Bower, the first British citizen to occupy Ibadan and one who occupied the office of the Travelling Commissioner for the entire Yoruba land and South-western Nigeria, between 1893 and 1897. A 60 feet high and 11 square feet of ancient architecture, Bowers Tower was constructed vintage style with two entrances and a spiralling staircase designed by Taffy Jones. It is located at the very top of the ancient Oke-Are, which is the highest of the seven hills of Ibadan. But beyond the archaic walls and rusty gates, there are things about the place history books won't tell you. First thing is the drive up the hill; the slope can make whatever car you drive test its brakes. Around the tower are small huts that are for recreation and would make for a good picnic venue. You can just imagine yourself having some spicy catfish pepper soup with a cold drink under the shade. The tower itself is a tall tapered erection with stairs leading all the way to the top. The spiral staircase, which is the reason the Tower is nicknamed Layipo, was made with only slim and average-sized people in
mind. The view at the end of the stairway however -for lack of a better word- is breathtaking and can be likened to the light at the end of a tunnel or the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Beautiful! While most will tell you that you can see the whole of Ibadan from the top of Bower’s Tower, that is actually a bit far fetched not because the ones who say it are ignorant but because Ibadan has expanded far beyond the borders of what it was when the tower was built. Regardless, however, the stillness of the air, the tranquillity and most importantly the view is just serene. From the top, Ibadan's other landmarks can be appreciated - Cocoa House, Femi Johnson Building, Cathedrals, Mapo Hall, the array of iconic brown roofs Ibadan is well known for, as well as the new buildings that are sprouting and replacing the legendary roofs... As far as your eyes can see… A trip to Bower’s Tower is an experience like no other and also a great spot for photography (self or professional).

C
hristmas, they say, is a period of togetherness, a time when families come as one, a time -despite its brevity - to make long lasting memories, a time to have fun, enjoy one another’s company, share gifts and, of course, a time to wine and dine.
There are quite a number of places here in Ibadan where you may want to eat your yuletide meal, there are a handful of restaurants in Ibandan with carefully thought menus that stands out.It does help if you deviate from the general cliché of Jollof/Fried Rice that Christmas has been associated with. If you are in an adventurous mood, there is a wide range of intercontinental meals which includes Chinese cuisine and local dishes such as Ofada on the menu of such restaurants. Places that provide excellent services and sumptuous meals include the Café Chrysalis at Old Bodija and Martha’s Kitchen at Jericho. Another place that spring to mind is the Koko Dome Restaurant at Dugbe. These places also offer classic staple meals such as Fried/Jollof and White Rice served with chicken/turkey/beef or fish for those trying to stay part vegan. For those preferring to eat at the regular places, Christmas special meals are usually available at KFC and Dominos (both in Bodija and Dugbe respectively). For dessert, you can pick up different types of pastries at Exquisito (see dining out page) and Shoprite while you can get a delicious brain freeze at any of the Cold Stone Creameries.
OLDTOWN
The city’s most popular delicacy is amala and it tastes much better with gbegiri. ibcityinfo
EAT
For too long, the norm around Christmas day has been to eat in and while there is absolutely nothing wrong with a meal on the dining table at home, there are families craving new experiences during Christmas and eating out may just serve them well…literally. Also, there are those stuck by themselves for the holidays, the new couples or perhaps a group of friends together for Christmas. Home cooked meals may not be as convenient and eating out may just solve their little conundrum.

Shopping
Budgeting & Haggling So as to avoid the popular “January Crunch”, it is important to budget smartly for Christmas. Be on the lookout for great offers and unless the price is fixed, feel free to get your haggling hat on.
Jingle Bags, Jingle Bags... There is a particular smell that floats in the air when the year nears its end; it smells of excitement, joy, hope and above all, the smell of brand new items. The hustle and bustle of Lagos comes on grand exhibition in Ibadan during this time as people go about trying to cross off their shopping lists for the season. Shopping for Christmas gifts is a fun experience. Whether it is for the hubby, children, family, fellow workers, business associates or the grumpy old boss. Christmas is a time to let them know you appreciate them and what better way than to get them gifts? Statistics have it that one out of ten people (particularly you ladies) is a shopaholic. This one person knows the nook and cranny of every mall, market or store and the relative prices of goods being sold there; they are very well enlightened at this. However whatever happens to the nine others? Let’s cover that. Shopping for gifts during Christmas should be creative but it is important not to neglect the routine gifts, after all, who does not like a hamper, cake (or cookies and other confectionary) or that big bag of rice? In getting creative, items such as beauty products can be included (again for you ladies), perfumes, belts, neck or bow ties, briefs for the men, traditional ankara, lace or linen fabrics for the parents and grandparents and let us not forget the kids…they do love their toys. These items are not only thoughtful but it goes a long way to express affection for the loved ones. Routine gifts as well as the reputable ones can be found
in almost all reputable supermarkets and stores in Ibadan. In purchasing cakes, you can live the grand experience not just for Christmas but also all year round at Exquisito Confectioneries. The following places are recommended for your shopping; Foodco Supermarket, The Perfume Shop, Teol’s Place, Sunflower and PLAY. However, in a situation where you are unsure of what you want to get, the shopping malls (Palms, Heritage, and Cocoa) represent a great place to indulge your curiosity. Most of these places accept ATM cards for their POS terminals so you do not have to be a walking around with lump sums of cash. Doing this is advised since the crime rate during Christmas period is high and it helps foster the country’s cashless policies. While sharing gifts during Christmas is a good thing, remember that doing it with love is the Ibadan way. Cheers!

However, it is important to note that comfort is the key that opens the door to an impeccable fashion statement. The Yorubas and indeed the Ibadan people are well known for combining style with simplicity with their tradition attires especially Ankara. There are many factors to consider when you are shopping for clothes. You might want to consider your body size, your budget, your fashion preference and then trend. The fashion industry in Ibadan has grown tremendously within the year, as it is easy to find stores that sell items that will suit your needs. Explore VENTURA MALL Do not ever let it be said that there is nothing to do in Ibadan. Being one of largest cities in West Africa, Ibadan is by no means short of activities and adventures to offer its residents and visitors while the Ventura Mall is testament to that. Unlike the three other malls in the city, the Ventura Mall which opened at Samonda, Ibadan in early 2014, is not just a shopping mall. There can never be too many shopping malls but the demise of the old Trans Amusement Park has left the inhabitants of Ibadan craving a place where children, young adults and the family as a whole can have unbridled fun. The introduction of the Ventura arcade which is its crown jewel is timely. The arcade is home to the first bowling centre in Ibadan with a 2-lane alley that makes you feel like professional bowler. If not in the bowling mood, there is an air hockey table and table soccer to further competitive fun among friends and family. There are also various games for kids such as car racing, combat games and adventure games that makes the centre such a popular attraction within the short time it has opened. The mall itself is also home to the Film House cinema a place mostly frequented by students of the University of Ibadan due to its proximity to the university and there is a food court area where friends and family can wine and dine. It is a recommended hangout location for those in Ibadan as there are activities available for everyone..

There is the anxious count down to see Santa Claus (father Christmas) and of course the gifts they get from their parents and family members. In fashioning out a great Christmas for the kids this season or even any day of the year, there are a few places that stand out in Ibadan. KIDS
FUN FACTORY The Fun Factory in Bodija is a recreational center designed specifically for a great family experience all year round. For Christmas however, they have various events organised for kids. In Ibadan, most privately owned primary schools organize a visit from Santa as part of the schools end of the year programme. The media outfits such as the local television stations (NTA, BCOS, MITV, Galaxy TV), radio stations such a Splash FM and certain churches also organise a visit from Santa. ZOO, IBADAN
SANTA CLAUS
THE ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN Unknown to most, there are two zoos in the Ibadan, one at the Agodi Gardens and the other is the revamped zoo inside the University of Ibadan. Kids are naturally curious about animals due to their schoolwork, hence a visit to the zoo will be a real treat for them. The University of Ibadan Zoo, since its renovation, has turned into a relaxing atmosphere where kids can explore and learn more about nature. With a reptile house, an ape enclosure, a lion enclosure and a crocodile house, the zoo is one action attraction that combines fun for the family with learning.
In getting gifts for the children, the recommended gifts for preteen kids are action figures, bicycles, dolls for the girls, remote control racing cars, board games, video games and of course clothing items. The new Lego Store at the Ibadan Mall is an ideal place to shop for action figure toys. Video games can be great gifts for most children with games available for various age groups. Video game consoles such as PlayStation can be bought at the new PLAY Store located in Bodija. For toddlers however, it is advised that you get them toys that are non-hazardous. Dolls should be soft, non-toxic and music playing toys should surely fascinate them. ibcityinfo

Health & Beauty The need for a healthy lifestyle cannot be overemphasized. In a world where diseases can be easily contracted (Take the recent Ebola scare the country just experienced as an example), one cannot be too careful. It is therefore important for everyone to maintain a clean and balanced lifestyle. A number of routines should be cultivated by everyone to foster better living. 1. Jogging/Walking Whether it is an early morning jog before the day fully commences or a late evening stroll after a meal, exercising is quite necessary. Most doctors agree that both walking and running helps the heart. For those preferring to remain indoors, running on a treadmill can be fun. However, jogging or walking outside can be much more refreshing as you breathe in fresh air and appreciate the scenery around you. Also, who knows, you just might win the Splash FM annual marathon race. 2. Take up a sport Sports has numerous advantages among which is that it helps regulate one's sleeping pattern, improves psychological reasoning and relaxes the body muscles. Football (or soccer) is the most common sport in the country. While this is fun for most, people, there are dIfferent types of sports

available for those who are interested. There are a number of centres in Ibadan where sporting activities like basketball, lawn tennis, golf, handball, table tennis or even swimming are available. The Recreation Club of Ibadan (commonly called Rec. Club) is a hub for such activities. Others where one can sweat it out include the state of the art IITA complex, the Ibadan Golf Club, the University of Ibadan student centre and staff club and Liberty Stadium off Ring Road. 3. Food. Make sure your choice of destination when eating out is hygienic and can be trusted (check our reviews and recommendations). Avoid food that is high in cholesterol and calories. Eating lots of fruits helps to supplement nutrients and enhance the body's metabolism. There are fruit markets in Ibadan , while the popular ones include Shoprite, the local markets such as Bodija Market, Oje Market and Bere. It is advisable to remember that certain products are usually available during specific seasons hence the general prices for such fruits fluctuate. Whether it is purchased at the local market or a supermarket, these fruits should be washed thoroughly before consumption. Remember again to take a stroll after your meal and flossing is very much advised to keep the teeth healthy.

Q. First off, who is Oyinkanade? A. Oyinkanade is a graduate of music department in the Obafemi Awolowo University. He is an artist signed unto Vivace Records. I love meeting people and I'm very easy going. Q. What musical genre will you say best describes your style of music? A. Well my style infuses of Fuji and R&B while i also have a preference for Afro-Pop.
FEATURED MUSIC ARTIST OF THE EDITION
Q. What part of Oyo State are you from? A. I hail from Oke Ogun. Q. How was growing up for you? A. Growing up for me was oxymoronic; fun and at the same time sort of boring because my mother would always lock us (my siblings and I) up and keep the key whenever she is going out. This was to keep us from mischief but you know we guys now, we kept our own special key. All we had to do was make sure we got back inside before she came back Q. If you were not into music, what else would you have done? A. I'll be a politician , which is why I am presently pursuing a degree in Political Science at the University of Abuja. Q. How was the Project Fame experience for you and how disappointed were you that you didn’t win it? A. I call it a transformation. I learnt a lot from the show and will always be grateful to the ibcity.info
Oyinkanade (born Oyinkansade Dare Akande) is an Ibadan thoroughbred best known for his blistering MTN Project Fame campaign in 2012. A singer, composer and entertainer, he further gained prominence when he dropped his hit single "Adura". His prodigious music prowess made him become the first male artiste to get signed to Vivace Records.

Adura lo mumi duro Q. How important will you say the Project Fame experience is to your present success? A. They taught me all I know today, from entertaining and engaging the crowd to writing of songs which I consider key for an artiste. Q. The track “Adura” really brought you
into people’s attention, topping charts in Ibadan radio stations. What can you say inspired the song? A. What inspired Adura was actually my journey through music, even though am not there yet but where I am now is a massive improvement from where I started. Putting this journey into perspective made me realise together that everything I am today is because of prayer, God's blessing and favour hence the song. Q. A. (Laughs)...Don't underestimate the power of prayers. That is all I do before getting it on. Q. You're signed on to Vivace Records, managed by Tee-Y mix. How has it been working with him? A. It has been great fun. T.Y is like a workaholic meaning we work all the time but it is a blessing because I am learning tonnes from him. Q. Your new song is called “Dancillate”, any connections with the month of December? A. Yes actually. Dancilate is a song for d "EMBER" period. Most people feel it is during these months bad things happen the most. The song just let them know this period can also be positive. It all depends your beliefs. Apart from Dancilate I also dropped "As e dey go" a song with an upbeat tempo just to showcase the versatility of Oyinkanade. Q. What do you do on a typical Christmas day? Best memory of Christmas as a kid?
Shina Peters, Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, 2face and a host of other indigenous musicians. Q. Given the diverse nature of the music industry, do you have any particular future dream collaboration A. I have actually done one already, featuring Olamide on the remix to the Adura song. There are many more coming so fingers should be crossed on that. Q. Are there any plans in the works for an album anytime soon? What are your future plans?
Q. How familiar are you with Ibadan? Any notable memories about the city outside of music? A. I was born in Ibadan and also had both my primary and secondary education in the city. It does not get more notable than that. Q. On a personal level, which do you prefer? Live performances or working in the studio? A. I like both but I prefer live performance. It just gets me in the vibe.
A. If am not on stage performing then you will most likely find me with my family. (Laughs)... A lot of memories. Can't say. Q. Being an up and coming artiste must be tough in a competitive industry like that in Nigeria, what advice do you have for similar artistes out there in Ibadan and elsewhere? A. They keep pushing and never think of giving up. One day you'll hit the right path

ightlife in Ibadan has impoved drastically in the last few years. It is in direct contrast to when the times the only activities going on after dark were those of tired workers racing home to rest weary limbs. While a few may take detours to the local pepper soup joints and relax with a few drinks (usually on Friday nights), most retired home early with the only evidence that potrays human existence in the city after 11pm is the blaring sounds from the speakers of religious institutions holding their vigils. Basically, nightlife in Ibadan was virtually non-existent.

NIGHTLIFE
These days, Ibadan is constantly revolving its entertainment center. Classy Bars, Clubs and Lounges are now a constant theme in the city that was once dubbed a “buzzkiller”. The existence of such places like Infinitis, Bubbles, Ebevande, Echo, 411, Top 1 Gardens, depict a contrast to the time when the only lounges or bars really operational in the city were Options and Koko Dome who, by the way, are still fully operational. It can actually be argued that the presence of students in the higher institution has contributed immensely to the development of late night social activities. One of such lounges is the Gentleman’s Quarters, abbreviated, GQ. Located on Awolowo Road in Bodija it is quite unique from other clubs because, in an effort to keep things fresh and classy, the club organizes different themed activities.

Ladies Night Whoever said women are the inferior sex has certainly never been to GQ on this day. It is happy hour all night long for the ladies. Side attractions such standup comedy and great music keep them occupied and culminates into an experience that have these ladies trooping in for the next one.
Champagne Night One of the French’s greatest inventions comes alive on this day. Whether it is Moet, Ace of Spades, Crystal, Perrier or Clicquot, on such days, the tick-tock sound of the clock at the west end of the bar is replaced by a “POP!!!” sound. The prices of the various bottles of champagne are subsidized just because they can and in the spirit of friendly competition and braggadocio, the whole club gets flooded with white wine. Somebody build an ark please!

badan is a fast growing city and it is has always been a major political, commercial and social hub in the Western province of Nigeria since forever and it keeps showing no sign of stopping any time soon. Hence, Ibadan is a regular stop for a lot of people who are here for business or leisure and this has lead to a wide spread boom in the hotel business with new ones springing up every odd month and the old ones undergoing upgrades. The Premier Hotel was once upon a time the only major hotel, and it is still one of the most prestigious hotels around. Whether it is December or July, for Christmas or business, choosing a good hotel is actually more difficult than it looks. It takes patience and past experience to usually differentiate the mediocre hotels from the good ones. There are, however, certain prerequisites in varying conditions that can be fulfilled before a hotel can be considered as "good". 1. An attentive and consistent service From the hotel manager to the concierge (or gateman as the case may be), a good hotel is expected to have a smart set of people who should make your stay comfortable regardless of the duration of your stay. An excellent infrastructure means nothing if the people in it are unwelcoming and rude. 2. Bar and Restaurant. Staying in a hotel usually means eating at the hotel's restaurant and it is imperative that the menu is rich and whatever is served is done in an impeccable manner. A bad meal goes a long way in determining the efficiency of a hotel, as it is crucial to cater to the culinary needs of your guest. The same goes for the bar; it should be fully stocked with a variety of drinks pleasing to most of the clientele.
overlooked. Checking in and out of a good hotel should be brisk, painless and without fuss. Whoever is behind the desk handling this should be both welcoming and cheerful. It goes a long way in determining if the client will enjoy the stay or will return afterwards. Note: Check out time for most hotels is 12pm. 6. Location In choosing a hotel, its location is very important. Whether it is business or leisure, it is much better for the hotel to be close to where you will need to be. Checking into a hotel at Old Ife Road when you have a meeting at Dugbe or a party at Bodija will, more often than not, lead to a less than satisfying stay. 7. Services and amenities One of the sad thing about being away from home is the absence of the little things that we take for granted in our every day lives such as TV, bathroom products, air conditioning, etc. Some hotels offer additional services such as room service, swimming pool, gymnasium and much more. While good architecture is important, remember that looks can be deceptive. It is important for a hotel structure to look impressive but what really matter are the services they render; how effective, how fast, was the silverware they served food from clean enough, was the staff at the check in desk friendly and why did the light bulb give out in the middle of the night? Also maintenance is as important as erecting a structure. All these details are important in making sure you do not get homesick and that the hotel becomes your home away from home. The truth however is that there is no ideal or perfect hotel because each individual has different tastes and preferences which vary from budget to budget.
3. Beddings: The primary reason for checking into a hotel in the first place is to sleep over. It is important that the bed is comfortable and the sheets are clean.. The presence of mosquitoes or insects is definitely unacceptable. 4. Hygiene Whether it is a 5 star or a 2 star hotel, a clean environment breeds contentment. Everywhere and everything in the hotel from the swimming pool to the silverware, glassware and plates, to the bathrooms, towels, gadgets, etc., must be kept clean at all times. 5. Check In and Check Out This is one of the aspects of a hotel that is usually

Sports GOLF Golf is an international pastime; a champion golfer can earn over $2 million a year in winnings alone and that is with the exclusion of endorsements and adverts. While the sport has been a major mainstay in Europe, Ibadan has, in recent times, been organising various tournaments for local and statewide golfers. The biggest of these tournaments held in 2014 is the Oyo State Governor’s Cup which was being held for the first time since 2007. The competition teed off earlier in the year at the Ibadan Golf Club at Onireke, Ibadan. It attracted more than 250 golfers. Another popular tournament held in the year was the Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc Open which was held in April also at the IGC. It was a 3-day tournament that featured some of the country’s top amateur and professional golfers, both male and female.
TENNIS In order to revive the ailing fortunes of lawn tennis in the state, the Ibadan Recreation Club together with the Nigerian Breweries Limited organized the 8th edition of the Ibadan Open. The competition, which was held on the IRC famed clay surface, was won by the number one seeded player, Abdulmumuni Babalola who came down from a set to close the match out to beat Kunle Bamidele at 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The competition further shows that there are various talented players out here in Ibadan who can rub shoulders with the crème de la crème of the tennis stars and they only need better training facilities and equipment to further their development.

FOOTBALL A year following the a disappointing campaign and their relegation into the second tier of Nigerian football, the Oluyole Warriors secured promotion on the last day of the season beating the Akwa Starlets by a lone goal. Shooting Stars who played the home game at the famous Lekan Salami Stadium, had to rely on a fifth minute strike from Sylvanus Ebiaku goal to climb above their opponents and back into the elite league. This marks the first time in 35 years that the 3SC of Ibadan will return to the premiership immediately after relegation. The club will now be hoping to better establish a foothold in the NPL and return a club which has produced Nigerian football legends such as Rashidi Yekini, Segun Odegbami and Muda Lawal back to its former glory days of the 70’s.
