INNOWAVE VARNA! The city of Varna is finalist for the European Youth Capital title of 2017.

The focus of this bid is on social innovation.

WHAT IS THE STARTING POINT? The initiatives undertaken through last year’s candidacy of Varna led to a number of positive changes, which made the cooperation between the Municipality and the youth sector stronger and more sustainable, and initiated the preparation and implementation of initiatives contributing to the cooperation of Varna Municipality with other past, present and future EYCs, inv...olving them in already launched mutual projects and partnerships.

These processes led to a shift in the paradigm by changing the entire approach focusing on problems on finding a solution by social innovation instead.

WHAT IS THE CONCEPT? The focus of this bid is in the field of social innovation, and more precisely in the development of social entrepreneurship taken in its crucial role as an implementation tool for development of youth policies, sustainable employment decisions, creativity, networking, exchange and education.

WHAT IS SOCIAL INNOVATION WITH THE EUROPEAN YOUTH CAPITAL? • A mobilization tool of social resources and individual capacities as a solution for decrease of unemployment (not only within the youth sector).

• A tool and focus for spreading the opportunities for business development.

• A platform for recognition and dissemination of non-formal education.

• Promoting the ways society benefits from social innovation and social entrepreneurship among young people involved in formal educational structures.

• The multi-disciplinary approach which can reach different sub-cultures and find solutions in various fields such as education, policy making, labour market, health care, integration of marginal groups.

• A tool for funding, fundraising, and resource mobilization – through identifying and setting up programmes initiatives that can empower young people and the civic sector.

WHAT IS OUR VISION? In our vision youth innovation and social entrepreneurship is distributed among all areas of development, both as in tool and method. Starting from the point that social problems are preconditions for development, we think social innovations at local, national and European level are an instrument for achievement of social cohesion necessary for changing people’s behavior, care and empathy towards social interests, problems, and will reevaluate and provide different approaches of the individuals within a city, country or in a multinational community.

Location and Territory Bulgaria is located in South-Eastern Europe and occupies the Eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula.

To the North, the country borders with Romania via the Danube River, to the East it touches the Black Sea, its southern neighbours are Turkey and Greece, and to the West it borders with the Republic of Macedonia and Serbia. The total territory of the country is 110 993 sq. km and Bulgaria ranks 15th in size among the other European countries.

History

The Bulgarian state was founded in 681 as a union of new-settled Proto-Bulgarians, Slavs and with the participation of the local Balkan people and Thracians.

The Thracians were a tribal society who inhabited a vast area in Central and Southeastern Europe. They were known for making filigree gold and silver jewellery. The great Homer described a Thracian king in Iliad, having “the biggest and handsomest horses I ever saw,/whiter than snow and swifter than the winds/and a chariot finely wrought with silver and gold.”

The so called Proto-Bulgarians came to the Bulgarian lands from the steppe region of the Volga River basin.

They were nomads and in IV c. AD were associated with the Huns. Although being a tribe of equestrians protoBulgarians, in VII c. AD they allied with the sedentary people of the Slavs, who had spreaded all over Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans in 6th century, mainly shepherds and farmers, to form the The First Bulgarian State. It gained political recognition from the Byzantine Empire in 681 A.D. The state was ruled by Khan Asparuh, the leader of the proto-Bulgarians, and its capital was Pliska.

История

Болгарское государство создано в 681 году в результате слияния пришедших из Азии протоболгар и славян с участием местного населения на Балканском полуострове - фракийцев. Фракийцы были племенные общества, населяющие обширную территорию в Центральной и Юго-Восточной Европе. Они были известны мастерством в работе с филигранным золотом и серебром. Великий Гомер описал фракийского царя в Илиаде как владетеля имеющего “самых больших и красивых лошадей, которых я когда-либо видел, / белее снега и быстрее ветра / и колесницу, искусно сделанную из серебра и золота.” Так называемые протоболгары пришли на болгарские земли со степей Поволжья. Они были кочевниками и в IV в. до н..э. и были связаны с гуннами. Несмотря на то, что они были племенем наездников, протоболгары в VII в. н.э. объединились с оседлым народом славян, который уже в VI в. занимал земли Центральной и Восточной Европы и Балканах и в основном были пастухами и земледельцами. Таким образом было образовано Первое Болгарское государство. Она получило политическое признание со стороны Византии в 681 году н.э. Bulgaria in Brief 5 This First Bulgarian State stretched from Transylvania in the north to the Aegean Sea in the south and from the Black Sea in the east to the Adriatic Sea in the west. It fell to the Byzantines in 1018.

During that period, in 855 was created the Slavic alphabet. It was named Cyrillic alphabet, after St. Cyril, and corresponded perfectly to the phonetic riches of the Slavonic-Bulgarian language. As of today more than 250 million people in Europe and Asia use the cyrillyc alphabet for their national languages, half of them are in Russia. With the accession of Bulgaria in EU, Cyrillic became the third official alphabet of the union.

It was in 864 that Tsar Boris I converted the state to Orthodox Christianity.

The Second Bulgarian State, established in 1185 at Veliko Tarnovo, reinstated the borders and a Golden Age began during which Bulgaria bordered on three seas.

From 1396 to 1878 the country was under the rule (the so called ‘yoke’) of the Ottoman Turks.

Sofia became the capital of Bulgaria after the Veliko Tarnovo Constitution was accepted in 1879. From 1878 (liberation from the Ottoman Turks) to 1944, Bulgaria enjoyed a brief but unstable period of freedom. After 1944 the Communist Party, led by Georgi Dimitrov, took power and proclaimed Bulgaria a People’s Republic in 1946. The Communist regime lasted till November 10th, 1989 when Bulgaria peacefully ousted the Party leader Todor Zhivkov.

One of the first sign of Bulgaria’s democratization after 1989 was the establishment of a multi-party system.

The new Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria, adopted on July 12, 1991, proclaims the country as parliamentary republic. On March 29, 2004 Bulgaria joined NATO, and on January 1,2007 the country became a member of the European Union.

Religion Full freedom of the religious denominations is proclaimed in the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria.

According to the census from 2011, 76% of the population are Eastern Orthodox Christians, 10 % are Muslims, 0.8% - Catholics, 1.1% are Protestants and 0,2 % are from other religions.

Population and Ethnic Groups Bulgaria is a country with a population of 7 364 570 people.

According to the 2011 census, 83,9 % of the people in Bulgaria are ethnic Bulgarians, and the biggest minorities are the ethnic Turks (9,4%) and the Roma (4,7%). The remaining 2% include smaller minorities like Armenians, Russians, Romanians, Ukrainians, Greeks and Jews.

Official Language and Alphabet Bulgarian. Other spoken languages are English, German, French and Russian.

6 Bulgaria in Brief Topography The country’s relief is varied (from 0 to 2,925 m above the sea level) and about 60 percent of the territory are hilly and mountainous. The most famous mountains are: Rila (with the highest mountain peak on the Balkan Peninsula Mussala – 2 925 m), Pirin (Vihren Peak – 2 914 m), the Central Balkan (Botev Peak – 2 376 m), the Rhodope Mountains (Golyam Perelik Peak – 2 191 m) and Vitosha Mountain near Sofia (Cherni Vrah Peak – 2 290 m).

Numerous natural phenomena are scattered across the country: mountain passes and gorges rock-pyramids and bizarre rock formations, numerous caves and waterfalls, beautiful lakes. Some of the most famous are: the Melnik Pyramids, the Fossil Forest, the Belogradchik Rocks; the gorges of the rivers Trigradska in the Rhodopes and Erma near the town of Tran, Vratsata; the valleys of the rivers Iskar, Struma and Mesta, the canyon of the Roussenski Lom River; the Srebarna Lake; the rock monastery Aladja off the city of Varna, etc.

There is a great diversity of karst forms, among these some 4,600 caves. The deepest cave in Bulgaria is Raichova Dupka (387 m deep), and the longest is Duhlata (17,600 m long). The best known are: the Ledenika, the Magurata and the Saeva Dupka Caves in the Balkan range; the Snezhanka, the Yagodinskata, the Dyavolsko Garlo, and the Uhlovitsa Caves – in the Rhodope Mountains.

Climate The climate is moderate continental with Mediterranean influence to the South. The average annual temperature is 10,5 degrees Celsius.

Four seasons are distinctly expressed – winter, spring, summer and autumn. January is the coldest month of the year. July and August are the hottest summer months and sometimes temperatures go above 30 degrees Celsius. Bulgarians enjoy 2000 to 24000 hours of sunlight per year.

Waters

Bulgaria boasts a huge variety and number of mineral springs of different chemical composition, suitable for prophylaxis and treatments of many diseases.

There are about 600 mineral water deposits in Bulgaria with more than 1,600 springs, located mainly at the foothills of mountains. There are many spa resorts in Bankya, Velingrad, Sandanski, the mineral baths of Stara Zagora, Narechen, Sliven and Haskovo, as well as in Kyustendil, Varshets, Hissarya, Merichleri, Momin Prohod and Kostenets.

Beautiful lakes lie hidden in the cirques of Rila and Pirin Mountains. There are also dams, surrounded by impressive nature, such as Iskar, Batak, Dospat and many others.

Воды

Болгария может похвастаться огромным разнообразием и количеством минеральных источников разного химического состава, показанных для профилактики и лечения многих заболеваний. Существует около 600 местонахождений минеральных вод в Болгарии с более чем 1600 источников, расположенных в основном у подножья гор. Многие курорты предлагают СПА процедуры - Банкя, Велинград, Сандански, Стара Загора, Наречен, Сливен и Хасково, Кюстендил, Выршец, Хисаря, Меричлери, Момин Проход и Костенец. 8 Bulgaria in Brief Flora and Fauna Bulgaria is rich in places where nature has been preserved almost unspoiled and vegetation demonstrates remarkable diversity. A total of 12 360 species have been found in its composition.

The Bulgarian endemic plants, which are to be found nowhere else in the world, number more than 250 species: Rila Primrose, Balkan Violet, Bulgarian Blackberry, Rhodope Tulip, etc. Forests abound with various wild fruit – all of them of proven flavour.

There is also a great diversity of herbs. Bulgaria’s fauna numbers more than 13,000 species. Rare mammal species are also to be found in the country.

Communication The country offers a highway network, including six international highways, which meet the international standards and link Europe with the Orient, and the North with the South. Four out of the ten Trans-European corridors cross the territory of Bulgaria – IV, VIII, IX and X. The first airline in the country, Sofia-Burgas, was opened in 1947. Today there are four Bulgarian airports, servicing commercial airlines: Burgas Airport (BOJ), Plovdiv Airport (PDV), Sofia Airport (SOF) and Varna Airport (VAR).

Inter-city and long distance bus transport are also well developed. Urban transport services are provided mainly by bus lines, trolley buses, subway and tramways.

Petrol stations on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria offer petrol with octane numbers 92, 98 and 95 H-unleaded, as well as diesel fuel. There are petrol stations at each FCPP, along international and secondary roads, and in towns and villages.

Railway roads – 6 500 km, the better part of which are electric power operated.

Border Regulations On the 1st of January 2007 Bulgaria joined the European Union. Visitors arriving from the EU don’t need a visa, but should carry a passport or other valid identity document confirming the nationality of the bearer.

Citizens of some non-EU countries may travel to Bulgaria for tourism and business purposes without a visa if the planned stay in Bulgaria does not exceed 90 days. For further information visit the website of the Bulgarian Embassy or Consulate in your country.

All other foreigners may cross the border of the Republic of Bulgaria if they hold a valid passport and an appropriate visa (Airport Transit Visa, Transit Visa, Regular Visa or Work Visa). As of 2012, Schengen visa holders have the right for a stay of up to 30 days within 6 months period, withut a short-stay Bulgarian visa.

Коммуникации

Страна предлагает хорошо развитую сеть автострад, в т.ч. шесть международных, которые отвечают международным стандартам и связывают Европу с Азией и северную с южной частью. Четыре из шести трансъевропейских коридоров пересекают территорию Болгарии – IV, VIII, IХ и Х. Первый авиомаршрут в Болгарии открыт в 1947 г. Сегодня в стране есть 4 аэропорта: Аэропорт Бургас (BOJ), Аэропорт Пловдив (PDV), Аэропорт София (SOF) и Аэропорт Варна (VAR). Городской и загородный транспорт хорошо развит. Распоряжения пограничной службы

1-ого января 2007 г. Болгария вступила в Европейский Союз. Прибывающим из ЕС не нужна виза, но они должны иметь при себе паспорт или другое удостоверение личности подтверждающий гражданство предъявителя. Граждане некоторых стран вне пределов ЕС могут ездить по Болгарии в целях туризма и деловых целях без визы, если запланированное пребывание в Болгарии не превышает 90 дней. Для получения дополнительной информации посетите сайт болгарского посольства или консульства в вашей стране. Все остальные иностранцы могут пересекать границы Республики Болгария, если у них действительный паспорт и соответствующая виза (транзитная виза, регулярная виза, рабочая виза и другие). С 2012 г. обладатели шенгенской визы имеют право на пребывание до 30 дней в рамках 6 месяцев, без визы краткосрочного пребывания.

In case of stolen or lost documents, you must go immediately to the nearest police station where a protocol of the accident will be made. Be sure to take a copy of it with you otherwise you can not leave the country.

Customs Regulations Across the border passengers may import and export commodities, which, by their nature, type and quantities, are not of commercial nature (passenger is any individual crossing the state border of the Republic of Bulgaria). These do not include items the passenger carries for personal use and consumption.

Passengers have the right to import at zero customs duty or import fees the items they need during their stay in the country, which, in type and quantities, correspond to both purpose and duration of the stay.

Traffic Regulations Traffic rules on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as road signals, are in compliance with European Standards.

Drivers, who exceed the specified speed limitations, are fined in the cases, when they have not threatened the safety of other participants in the traffic.

Participants in a road accident driving a car with foreign registration are obliged to remain on the site and wait for the traffic police to come. Drivers are banned from driving after consuming alcoholic drinks (over 0.5 percent per 1000 in the blood) and/or when they are under the influence of other intoxicating substances.

Vignette System The Vignette system is valid for the National Road Network, except for the ring roads and by-pass roads of populated areas as well as the roads within populated areas. Buying a vignette, you have the right to use over 300 km of motor ways and over 18 000 km of roads for the period specified in the vignette.

Where to buy a vignette from?

You can buy a vignette from all border-crossing points (BPCs) of the Republic of Bulgaria. There you will find the units of REA (designated with the relevant mark).

These units are open 24 hours. The prices of vignettes are in Euro (EUR). Apart from Euro, in the border units of REA you can pay for the vignette in USD as well.

The band is founded in 1996 by the guitarist Robert Westerhold and their style is gradually forming into a symphonic metal.

A few months later the band releases its first album “Enter”.

Through the years they took part in a lot of established festivals like Ozzfest, Lowlands, Dynamo, Rock Wertcher, Puckkelpop, Parckpop, the german Rock im Park, Bizzare, Summerbreeze.

In 2000 they released „Mother Earth“, which is sold in 350 000 copies and reaches platinum status in Holland and golden in Belgium. They release their sixth album Hydra on 22th of January 2014 in Japan, on 31th of January in Europe and on 4th of February in USA. The album includes songs with guest musicians like Tarja Turunen and the rap performer Xzibit. The band comes in Bulgaria as a part of their Hydra World Tour. Shortly after Kavarna, Within Temptation will perform on the Wacken Open Air festival.

Unisonic is a German hard rock/heavy metal supergroup, founded in November 10, 2009 by former Helloween singer Michael Kiske alongside Dennis Ward and Kosta Zafiriou from Pink Cream 69. In the group is also Kai Hansen regarded as „the godfather of power metal”. The band released the EP Ignition and their first studio album Unisonic in 2012. The EP For The Kingdom and the second album Light of Dawn came out in 2014. Both studio albums have scored high entries in several international music charts. Unisonic come to Bulgaria for their first time.

An American power metal band from Tampa, Florida, formed by Thomas Youngblood and Richard Warner in 1991. In 1994 the band release of the debut Eternity followed in August of the next year. in 1997, drummer Warner as well as singer Mark Vanderbilt had to be replaced with Casey Grillo Roy Khan. In summer 2000, Kamelot undertook the „New Allegiance Tour” through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Greece and Spain, during which the recordings for Kamelot's first live album The Expedition were made.

Kamelot was approved mainly with their last two albums - „The Black Halo” (2005) and „Ghost Opera” (2007). Here their progressive metal with elements of power and symphonic metal is already typical for group specificity.

The last group that will be part of the festival is the symphonic metal band, formed in 2002 by former Within Temptation keyboardist Martijn Westerholt. For the first album the band invites artists such as Marco Hietala from Nightwish, Liv Kristine from Leaves' Eyes (vocals) and Ad Sluijter from Epica. Last year they released their last album entitled „The Human Contradiction”.

Now the authors of the everlasting I Wanna Rock and We’re Not Gonna Take It, are coming back for the anniversary of the biggest rock event in Bulgaria.

HammerFall are a power metal veterans from Sweden, formed in 1993 by Oscar Dronjac. In 1997 they release the album Glory to the Brave in Japan and USA, which sells up to 100 000 units. The band also receives a Grammy nomination. In 2001 the band starts to work with Michael Vagener, who has produced bands like Accept, Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne, with him they release Renegade. In 2006 they release they sixth studio album Threshold, which goes straight to the top of the charts in Sweden. The latest album from the last year is called (r)Evolution, and also debuted as number one in the charts in Sweden and enters the top 5 in several other countries.

The world success comes in 1973, when the group is joined by Michael Schenker, only 18 at the time. In the group today are Phil Mogg, Andy Parker, Paul Raymond and Vinnie Moore.

Candelmass is an influential Swedish epic doom metal band established in Stockholm 1984 by bassist, songwriter and bandleader Leif Edling and the drummer, Matz Ekstrรถm. In January 2013, Candlemass was voted the greatest Swedish hard rock/metal band of all time by the writers of Sweden Rock Magazine, Scandinavia's biggest hard rock magazine as well as Sweden's biggest music magazine by circulation.

VARNA REGION

is located in the northeastern part of Bulgaria and reaches to the Black Sea. The region includes 12 municipalities.

Land

The landscape is dominated by hilly landforms. The climate is moderate continental, with Black Sea influence along the coastline. Inland rainfalls do not occur very often and summers usually see dry spells. The prevailing vegetation is deciduous. The area of Kamchia River mouth is a dense forest reserve with rare plant species being preserved.

People, Towns And Culture

The geographic distribution of the population is strongly uneven. The settlement agglomeration formed by Varna, Beloslav, Devnya and Provadia has concentrated over 75 percent of the residents in the region. The process of urbanization has been very active especially in the last 30 years and the urban-rural ratio is 82:18. The ethnic composition is as follows: 371 048 Bulgarians, 30 469 Turks, 13 432 Roma and 5 638 of other ethnic groups.

Varna (population 334 870) is an ancient town of centuriesold traditions. Today it is a large industrial, transport and academic center, as well as an international sea tourism hot spot. The towns surrounding Varna- Beloslav, Devnya and Provadia have obtained in the last 50 years a typical industrial urban scenery and atmosphere, whereas Dolni Chiflik and Vulchi Dol are specialized in agriculture. VISIT Euxinograd Prince Battenberg visited Varna in 1880 and he was welcomed at the monastery “St. Dimitar”, which was situated at the same place, where now the residence stands. The monarch liked the local nature so much, that two years later the Varna municipality bestowed him the monastery and its adjoining lands.

The palace park is an integral component of the Evksinograd complex. Prince Ferdinand attracted French park architects to design the 800 decare park in 1888. The project involved a rare tree species collection – from black oak to Atlantic cedar, which are the only species on the Balkan Peninsula.

The bare and stony areas were covered in fertile soil, mostly taken from the valley of Kamchiya river. Greenhouses were built northeast of the palace for wintering of the palm trees and flower production.

More than 500 flower species and 200 sapling species are grown there and in the arboretum.

In 1891 a palace winery was built as a part of the complex and a successor of the old monastery cellar. The initiative belongs to prince Ferdinand, and the design was made by a German architect. The building is a picturesque house in Bulgarian Revival style. It includes two underground levels, a host wing, a laboratory, a bottling workshop, administrative offices and a degustation room. The size of the winery is as the one of a small boutique production.

Another landmark in the area of the residence is the ruins of the late ancient fortress Kastritsi in the northeastern part of the park.

Apart from being a significant beach resort, Varna rivals the great cities of Sofia and Plovdiv, in its abundance of cultural attractions and historical landmarks, buildings, museums and art galleries. It also provides access to some of the quieter scenic spots along the seashore, including the nature reserve of Kamchia, the royal palace of Balchik and the hillside Monastery of Aladzha (open every day from 09.00 till 18.00, phone: 052 355 460).

Seaside Park - this is the biggest park in Varna, situated by the beach. Its construction was commenced in 1878.

Within the park area one can find the Seaside Baths, the Naval Museum, the Natural Science Museum, the Aquarium (with a unique exhibition of water organisms – mainly Black Sea, freshwater and tropical fish species), the Astronomical Observatory and the Planetarium which organizes observation sessions for its visitors, the Dolphinarium with an amusing show where the main stars are the most intelligent water creatures on Earththe dolphins, etc.

The Church of the Assumption - this church is the second largest one in Bulgaria after St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. The imposing temple was erected in 1884-1886 by the master builder Gencho Kunev in honour of the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman yoke. The Church of the Assumption is declared monument of culture of national significance and impresses with its modern Byzantine architecture, spacious interior, woodcarver iconostasis by masters belonging to the school of Debur and stained glass. The church was painted in 1949-1950.

The 2nd century thermae (warm baths) are the main part of the remains of the largest Roman public building in Bulgaria. During this century a large part of this historical site has been revealed by the archaeologists.

Thus a very thorough and exact description of this important landmark has been achieved, though some parts of the building remain hidden under the streets nearby. Coming across an extensive ancient building amidst the streets and houses of a modern city is not unusual in Bulgaria, but it is always a delight.

Further from the center, a granite monument commemorates the Battle of Varna, which took place in 1444. Here 30,000 Crusaders were waiting to sail to Constantinople when they were attacked by 120,000 Turks. The Polish King Ladislas was killed in a bold attempt to capture the Ottoman Sultan Murad. After his heroic death the nickname Varnenchik was attached to his given name. The subsequent retreat foreshadowed Christendom’s general retreat before the advancing Ottomans.

Археологи уже располагают достаточными сведениями о действительной планировке этого сооружения, хотя часть руин римских терм остались под современными улицами. Наткнуться на древнее здание, соседствующее с современными улицами и домами, дело обычное в Болгарии, но это всегда вызывает удивление и восторг. Расположенный на окраине города, гранитный монумент увековечивает Битву под Варной в 1444 г. Тридцатитысячная армия крестоносцев расположилась лагерем в ожидании отплытия в Константинополь, когда на нее напало двенадцатитысячное войско турок. The beach is about 1 km long and from 20 to 80 m wide covered with fine quartz sand washed by the quiet, shallow seawaters. The park abounds in rare vegetation. The SUNNY DAY complex has 1300 beds altogether, suitable not only for sea holidays but also for balneological treatment, conferences and business tourism.

BALCHIK What To See And Do The Palace (phone: 0579/2559, 2 kilometers - west of town) - Queen Marie of Romania had this Italiandesigned palace villa built in 1924 and summered here from 1931-38 when the Dobrudzha was part of Romania (1913-40). The Quiet Nest as it was known was supposedly also a love nest for the 60-year-old monarch and her 20-year old Turkish lover, Hasan. Marie belonged to a sect whose aim was the reconciliation of the Christian and Muslim religions and she apparently practiced what she preached. The villa architecture is primarily oriental, but includes old Bulgarian and gothic styles as well.

The botanical gardens were begun in 1955 by horticulturist Daki Yordanov, remembered by an attractive caretaker-cottage just inside the main entrance. In the past, 3000 species of plants graced the extensive grounds, including many white poplar - some over 300 years old - and 1000 cacti, the second largest such collection in Europe. Some 450 botanical gardens worldwide contributed to the collection.

Revival Complex (4 Hristo Botev Str., phone: 05792177; off-season, contact the museum for access) - This National Revival-style house, rebuilt in its entirety in the 1980’s, contains a one-room mutual school that functioned until 1909.

History Museum (3 Vitosha Str., phone: 05792177, daily 08.00 - 12.00 and 12.30 - 17.30) Ethnographic Museum (opposite the history museum, same hours) - The exhibits in this authentic 1860 house are as diverse as those across the street.

VarNa must do`s Experience the spiritual energy of the most beautiful churches in Varna

The Cathedral of Holy Assumption is a church of the Diocese of Varna and Veliki Preslav.

It is recognized by its copper cubes with a shade of gold which symbolize the town and with its rich frescoes.

The Church of Saint Nicholas was built as a result of donation presented by a Varna resident in 1866. The temple is honored by the Varna sailors whose patron is namely St. Nicholas with the Bulgarian name St. Nicola.

Orthodox Church Saint Petka is the only temple in the center of Varna that has not been ruined and it is quite popular because of its very rich educational and social activity.

The temple “Saint Athanasius” is located just near the Roman Baths in Varna. A peculiarity of the temple is that there are no domes but despite that fact it has exceptional acoustics.

Armenian Apostolic Church “Saint Sarkis” dates back to 1767. It has been constructed gradually as in the base there are excavations of an

even more ancient temple. It’s located next to the Shishkova Garden. Seen from above the temple has a shape of a cross with polyhedral pyramid dome characteristic for the Armenian churches.

Aziziye Mosque is located next to the Boteva Garden. It is built in 1869. It was maintained and renovated after 1990 and now it is an acting Muslim temple.

The Saint Archangel Michael Church, located is in the building of the first Bulgarian school in the town of Varna, opened on July 25th, 1862. At the moment it is a spiritual and educational center where you can see ancient icons and church utensils from the past.

St. Constantine and Helena Monastery Religious locals built a small church around the holy spring /ayazmo/, located in its alter. Soon around the church some rooms were constructed and gradually a cloister and a monastery were established. Many hermits were residing at the monastery together with the monks.

Aladzha Monastery is located 17 km northeast of Varna in a sheer cliff on the road to Golden Sands. The monastery consists of two levels /floors/ in the rocks. On the first level the monastery church is situated. On the second level there are a chain of monk’s rooms, a requiem church, kitchen with a dining room and a crypt.

Make sure to visit the lighting show which takes place there every Wednesday and Saturday at 21:00 which is going to take you back to ancient and legendary times.

THE LEGENDS OF ALADZHA MONASTERY

“Легенды Аладжа монастыря”

The Legends of Aladzha Monastery Audiovisual Show is part of a programme by Varna City Council, in support of the initiative to promote Varna’s bid for European Cultural Capital in 2019.

It marks the beginning of creation of various forms of tourist animation by use of the region’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage as a conceptual basis, aiming at a European sustainable development model for the tourist industry in Varna.

The show is based on Vallery Kinov’s book, Legends of Aladzha Monastery, but incorporates elements, revealing the cultural heritage of tribes and nations inhabiting Varna region since distant antiquity.

In a chronological order are followed the genesis of life on Planet Earth some billion years ago, the prehistoric Sarmat Sea that covered the territory of the whole of South-eastern Europe, some 15 million years ago, the primates’ use of fire, the treasures of Varna Eneolithic Necropolis and the birth of the European civilization; the Getae tribes’ cult rituals, the foundation of ancient Odessos by Hellenic sea-farers, the Roman period, the Bulgarian state foundation and nation’s conversion to Christianity.

The focus of the show is the foundation, the rise and fall of the medieval rock monastery near Varna. The final point - at the background of Jesus’ prayer - is a symbol of the revival of the medieval rock monastery and the intransience of human and Christian values.

Along with the light-and-sound effects over the rocky massif, onto which Aladzha Monastery was built, are projected film impressions based on elements of the legends, which as an artistic solution, have no analogue across South-Eastern Europe.

The show production is the work of director Nikolay Yotov, the screenplay is by Vallery Kinov – the longtime curator of the Aladzha Monastery Museum and National cultural monument, the music is by the composer George Andreev.

Вдобавок к световым и звуковым эффектам, на скальном массиве, в котором построен Аладжа монастырь, показываются киноленты-импрессии, заснятые по мотивам легенд - творческое решение, которое не имеет аналога во всей Юго-Восточной Европе. Постановка спектакля режиссера Николая Йотова, сценарий Валерия Кинова, многолетнего смотрителя музея и национального памятника культуры “Аладжа монастырь”, а музыка композитора Георгия Андреева.

MADARA RIDER In the middle of a vertical cliff, in the east part of the Balkan mountain range, near the road from Danube river to the Black Sea and the Bosphorus, is carved one of the most mysterious monuments, listed in UNESCO World Heritage list, the Madara Rider.

According to scientists, this rock relief has been created about 1300 years ago, in the beginning of 8th century. How and why?

These questions still remain unanswered.

There are so many hypotheses, that even researchers themselves get confused.

Some argue that the rider is Khan Krum, and the relief was ordered by Khan Omurtag.

Others believe that the rider is Khan Tervel, or god Tangra.

One it the most recent hypothesis holds that the relief is a stone horoscope of Bulgaria and points out the exact location of the stars and the planets (depicted as a human figure and several animals) at the time of the foundation of Great Bulgaria on April 8, 165. To put is short, something like a sign of ownership or a prediction for eternal existence of the Bulgarian reign over the region to the south of the Danube River.

МАДАРСКИЙ ВСАДНИК По средине отвесной скалы в восточной части Балканской горной цепи, возле дороги, ведущей от реки Дуная к Черному морю и Босфору, высечен самый старый каменный рельеф в Европе, один из самых загадочных памятников в списке ЮНЕСКО всемирного культурного наследия, Мадарский всадник. По мнению ученых, рельефное изображение сделано около 1300 лет тому назад, в начале VIIIв. Как? Остается загадкой. Почему? Имеется такое количество гипотез, что иногда и сами исследователи путаются. Одни утверждают, что всадник - это хан Крум, а рельеф сделан по велению Омуртага. Другие видят во всаднике хана Тервела, третьи – самого бога Тангру. Одна из самых последних гипотез утверждает, что рельеф представляет собой каменный гороскоп Болгарии. И показывает точное расположение звезд и планет (изображенных в виде человеческой фигуры и нескольких животных) в момент основания Великой Болгарии 8 апреля 165 г., или присоединения этой территории. Одним словом, является чем-то вроде знака собственности и предсказания долговечности болгарской власти к югу от реки Дуная.

Traditionally, the festival program will include an exhibition of young artists, “workshop” – master class for young performers. A film and book about ABBA by the journalist Georgi Toshev will be presented during the festival, music fans will have the opportunity to see movies about popular Bulgarian artists.

The festival will organize roundtable on copyright issues. The audience will meet one of the most famous Bulgarian singers Bogdana Karadocheva after the movie about her work.

For the second year will be held and International Radio song contest, in which last year voted over 300 000 listeners of international radio stations.

The International Competitions Night of “Discovery 2015” will be on May 16 when the singers and songs from 17 countries will compete in two international competitions – for song and artist. The public will enjoy also the performance of our guest singers – Lady Leshurre, Teddy Katsarova, Fandango & others.

For precursors of the Varna Summer IMF are considered the First Bulgarian Folk Music Celebrations in the city of Varna since 1926.

The overall appearance of the festival is characterized by the presentation of masterpieces of Bulgarian and world music culture, with a diversity of genres and presence of artists with international prestige. Traditionally there is a participation of the Varna musical institutions and renowned Bulgarian performers and bands, which have made our musical performing art famous. The presence of worldclass foreign soloists, conductors, symphony and chamber orchestras, choirs, opera ensembles, ballet ensembles is impressive.
