Victoria Dockside, Hong Kong’s latest luxury shopping mall, has successfully drawn an array of internationally famous outlets. A new addition to the illustrious list is Fortnum & Mason, the iconic British retailer and hospitality brand, which recently opened a new shop and restaurant concept.

Established in 1707 in Piccadilly, London, the iconic elite retailer is known for its focus on quality. Its 7,000 square-foot split-level premises in Hong Kong comprise a shop downstairs and the elegant Fortnum’s 181 restaurant upstairs, with commanding views of the harbour. The shop showcases some of Fortnum’s signature products, including Royal Blend Black Tea and a newly created Musea Blend, freshly baked biscuits, champagne and wines and much more.

The restaurant sports an elegantly and luxuriously appointed dining room where diners can enjoy lunch, dinner, or Fortnum & Mason’s signature afternoon tea.

For our dinner, we started with a British classic appetiser, Black Pudding Scotch Egg with Piccalilli ($208) that is tasty and savoury. The Fortnum’s Smoked Salmon with Soda Bread ($168) is another classic – the smoked salmon is exquisite.

For our main courses, we had to choose Beef Wellington, Dauphinoise Potatoes, Green Beans and Peppercorn Sauce ($988). The lovingly baked Beef Wellington coated in golden crust was all we could ask for. The meat keeps tender and warm, capturing all the beef flavour. The other main is Crab and Tomato Linguini ($288), which is zesty and done perfectly to complement the beef really well.

For desserts, we enjoyed the Crepe Suzette ($188), which is prepared and served tableside, with the flaming orange sauce aroma whetting our appetite. The finale is another classic, Knickerbocker

Glory ($118) in which layers of ice cream, fruit, jelly and cream are served in a spectacular tall glass.

Whether you want to peruse its well-stocked shop or unwind in the elegant and timelessly decorated restaurant, we highly recommend Fortnum & Mason for an unmatched British luxury experience.

Bamboo Thai

The recent opening of Bamboo Thai, a contemporary Thai restaurant, will only add to the buzz among Thai cuisine foodies. Located in the bustling Langham Place shopping mall in Mong Kok, Bamboo Thai serves classic Thai dishes with a chic and contemporary edge.

The à la carte menu, which we chose from, is the brainchild of Executive Chef Sai Hsu. We started with appetisers: Smoked Salmon Tartare with Prawn Crackers ($88), Fish Cakes ($68), and Tom Yum Chicken Wings ($58). The salmon tartare, seasoned with lime, Sriracha sauce, fish sauce and coriander, goes well with the fresh mango. The deep-fried chicken wings come in a large portion and taste tangy and mildly spicy.

The next dish we tried is a must – Laeng Saeb ($98 small, $188 large), Bamboo Thai’s signature dish. The large, full plate of juicy Dutch beef ribs are slow-cooked with lemongrass, ginger, coriander and lime kaffir leaves, and paired with a tangy sauce made with Thai herbs and chili. To eat this, we donned plastic gloves and busily dug into the bones and chewed off the juicy morsels. The tangy juice is what makes the dish so appetising.

Two more mains followed: Red Curry with Slow-cooked Beef Short Ribs ($158) and Wok-fried Tiger Prawns in Thai Cream Curry ($198). The short ribs are slow-cooked and taste especially tender, their flavour enhanced by the spiciness of the red curry. The Vietnamese tiger prawns are wok-fried with red bell pepper and onion, with egg and milk added to intensify the creaminess and aroma.

We finished the lunch with a benchmark Pad Thai with Tiger Prawns ($108) and a refreshing and large-portioned dessert, Coconut Sorbet with Pomelo and Fresh Mango ($58).

Bamboo Thai also offers a wide selection of tropical cocktails and mocktails as well as traditional Thai drinks, at reasonable prices.

Our visit to Bamboo Thai was a pleasant treat—the restaurant represents excellent value for money, with delicious food, good service and a price that is light on the wallet.
