DUCK Ages 12 to 24 months • Orientation to water for toddlers and their parent/caregiver. • Swimmers learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements through games, songs and active water play. The parent/caregiver also learns age specific water safety.

SEA TURTLE Ages 24 to 36 months • Orientation to water for toddlers and their parent/caregiver. • Swimmers learn, through fun games and songs, how to combine skills, how to kick with a buoyant object and how to perform basic floats, glides and kicks.

SEA OTTER Ages 3 to 5 years • Transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of the instructor. Most of the skills are assisted by the instructor. • Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides, and swim one metre. They also learn age appropriate water safety skills.

SALAMANDER Ages 3 to 5 years • Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sea Otter. • Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim two metres, further develop basic floats and increase their distance on front and back glides. Front swim and roll-over glides are also included, and swimmers learn appropriate water safety skills such as how to jump into chest-deep water and how to use a personal flotation device (PFD). • Safety skills development includes water orientation, safe entries and exits and only swimming when an adult is present.

NO CLASSES August 7

A 10–level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1

The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.

Level 2

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Level 3

This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

Level 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Level 5

This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

Level 6

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Level 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m), elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

Level 8

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Level 9

This level reviews the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m), breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

Level 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Creative experiences

Children are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities including craft, special events, sharing, imaginative centre play, circle time, sensory table activities, field trips, letter and number identification, creative movement in the dance studio and games, sports and skill development in the gymnasium.

Creative experiences occur regularly in our program. Unstructured art and craft times allow everyone the opportunity to try out new materials and let their imaginations soar. Our centres are designed to allow the children a chance to play creatively using their imaginations to create their own experiences.

Our programming allows children the opportunity to develop and use new talents, skills and interests that will assist them when they enter the school system. Early literacy and language skills are explored by combining calendar activities, name recognition activities, letter of the week program, special helpers and reading and listening centres. Themes related to the world around us offer many opportunities to learn about a variety of topics and allow children to relate these ideas to their everyday life.

Physical growth and skill development

Social and emotional learning Social and emotional learning is explored daily in our classroom. Children have the opportunities to choose learning centres to play in with other classmates. Sensory tables open up the chance to explore varied textures and materials while sharing the experience with their peers. This time is a fantastic time to discover how to share and empathize with others in the classroom.

Physical growth and skill development are a huge part of our program. Physical literacy is the ability for children to learn the skills necessary for success in being active for life. It is as important to healthy growth and development as the ABC’s are important to literacy and learning for life. According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, being active can help young children maintain a healthy weight, improve movement skills, have fun, be happy, develop self-confidence and improve learning and attention. We focus on building those necessary skills such as hopping, jumping, skipping, catching, throwing and balancing. Check out one of our exciting new classes. Kids Connection now offers a one day per week evening class on Tuesdays or an activity focused Friday morning class. *There is a $25 non refundable fee due at registration.

Preschool, children & youth Genesis Place recreation programming Our approach to quality programming is based on the following:

Physical literacy We all know that you have to be able to walk before you can run, but did you know that you have to be able to hop before you can skip or balance before you can kick? Our programs focus on early physical literacy skills through games and activities to promote fun and enjoyment of an active lifestyle later on in life. It’s not about being the best; it’s about being able to participate!

The importance of play Some of the best childhood memories come from the freedom to PLAY! Please join in our PLAY based programs where kids get to have fun and be kids. Whether it’s a parented program where you and your child can enjoy making new friends and playing together, or in an independent class where your child gets to explore different equipment and fun games on their own, it’s all about remembering how to PLAY!

Our community RECREATION summer 2017

It is important our natural areas stay natural.

What should you do? • Never mow/trim the grass on any City property. • Allow native vegetation to establish itself (3 – 5 years). • Never dump your grass clippings or other materials in natural areas or on any City property. Did you know mowing grass on City property and dumping material onto City property contravene our City’s bylaws?

Do you have concerns about weeds & pests?

Weeds thrive on maintained and manicured grass because they have access to moisture and light. Mowing only cuts the tops of the weeds off, leaving the roots intact, allowing them to grow back and continue to spread. Healthy, thriving native vegetation outcompetes weeds by using moisture and creating shade. Allowing the natural vegetation to establish itself will help eliminate weeds in that area. The City of Airdrie monitors natural areas and naturalized landscapes for weeds and pests and applies control where necessary using best management practices.

Natural vegetation • Increases native plant, bird, fish and wildlife populations. • Decreases weeds. • Reduces soils erosion providing bank stability. • Reduces dust and settles particles.

• Filtrates run-off and contaminants from entering the water. • Removes carbon dioxide and other ccontaminants from the air. • Is used as a buffer to lower noise pollution.

89

Caring for our natural areas Can you spot the duck nest?

Many animals use camouflage in natural areas to raise their young, forage for food and hide from predators. Please be careful in our natural areas. Never mowing City property and staying on the pathways will help the birds and other wild animals live safely.

Meadow vole The damage from the Meadow Vole is often observed in the spring when the snow melts. Quite often we notice trails in our turf and gardens left behind by voles. The Meadow Vole or Field Mouse is a compact, stocky rodent (14 to 19cm in length) with short legs and short tail quite often with grey fur. Voles eat a variety of plants, mostly grasses as well as occasionally eat the bark around the base of smaller trees. The Meadow Vole plays an important role in the ecological niche as a primary food source for raptors and carnivorous mammals. Although the Meadow Vole is native to our area, they can be a nuisance for home owners and gardeners by creating trails in the turf and gnawing on the bark at the base of smaller trees. Voles can be found in all areas of the city, but are most commonly found in areas bordering open spaces. To discourage Voles from making a home in your yard: • Wrap quarter inch wire mesh around the base of smaller trees to prevent voles from gnawing at the base of tree. • Eliminate yard waste such as leaves and grass clipping piles. • Maintain your grass. • Bird feed on the ground may attract voles as a potential food source. If you have voles, trapping may be effective for controlling a small population in a residential yard. This can be done by using a mouse snap trap set perpendicular to the trails they leave, a few inches away from the burrow entrance. Quite often turf damage will rejuvenate in the spring, after raking the damage. The City of Airdrie Parks Department does not conduct vole control.

Multi-family recycling

As of January 2018 it will be mandatory for all multi-family residential buildings currently not receiving City of Airdrie curbside waste collection services to have a recycling program in place. The City implemented a multi-family recycling program in January 2017. A multi-family property includes residential condominiums, apartments and any residential building with multiple units that does not currently receive city curbside waste collection services. Building owners and property managers are responsible for implementing and ensuring the program meets the requirements, however, they have the flexibility to choose their own private recycler and to customize the program to meet their building’s specific needs. Every building owner or manager of a multi-family property must: 1. Implement a recycling program that accepts the minimum of: • Mixed paper • Cardboard • Plastics # 1–7 (except Styrofoam)

! NEW

• Refundable beverage containers (excluding glass) • Tetra Paks® (juice and soup boxes) • Metal (tin food cans, aluminium pie plates, etc.) 2. Existing multi-family buildings must submit a waste and recycling strategy to the City of Airdrie by January 1, 2018. New multi-family properties occupied after January 1, 2018 must submit a waste and recycling strategy within 30 days of occupancy. 3. Ensure the waste and recycling generated at the property is collected, stored and disposed of in accordance with the waste and recycling strategy in place for that property. 4. Ensure their residents are educated about recycling services, including types of materials accepted and the location of recycling receptacles. Information must be distributed as the program is implemented and within 30 days of a resident moving in. 5. Provide onsite storage of adequate size and quantity to contain all of the recyclable materials generated on the property. 6. Provide clear and visible signage on or near bins indicating: • The container is only for recyclable materials, and • The types of accepted recyclable materials

• Stretchy plastic (shopping bags, etc.)

Blue cart tip

Wondering if you can recycle plastic film? Do the stretch test! If it stretches it can be recycled (like plastic wrap and plastic bags). If it’s crinkly like a chip bag and doesn’t stretch, it’s not recyclable.

Changes to cup disposal

Other recyclables Not all recyclable items can go in your blue cart. Take the following items to the Eastside Recycle Depot. Electronics Styrofoam (no food styrofoam) Coffee cup/drink lids

We’re making changes to where we place disposable cups. Waxed lined coffee/drink cups should no longer go in the green cart with your organics as our processor is finding the wax does not break down during the recycling process and compromises the final product. Waxed cups should be placed in the garbage. Unwaxed cups can be recycled in your blue cart.

?

Paint Lightbulbs Aerosols Cooking oil Motor oil & filters (residential quantities) Textiles/clothing Propane tanks

Not sure if it’s waxed or unwaxed? Do the scratch test! Scratch your fingernail along the inside of the cup – if it is waxed, you will see a layer of wax under your fingernail.

Collection and placement

Batteries

Place your blue cart at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Leave a minimum of 1 metre clearance around the entire cart to ensure trucks are able to access it.

Household hazardous waste Excess blue cart materials

(that would cause your blue cart to overflow)

!

Carts cannot be placed at the curb between two vehicles as the truck arms cannot reach. Place your cart out past any parked vehicles. The recycling collection trucks are automated and equipped to pick up only carts and not excess recycling around it. If you have excess recycling, please take it to the Eastside Recycle Depot or store it until the next collection day.
