Responsible pet ownership The City of Airdrie has an Animal Control Bylaw No. B-33/2016 outlining the responsibilities of animal ownership. This is a brief overview of the Bylaw.

Animal owners must: • Keep dog on a leash unless in a designated off-leash area • Purchase a dog licence once the dog is three months old • Make sure your dog’s licence is on your dog at all times • Clean up after your dog • Purchase a cat licence • Not allow cats to roam off your property

Animal must not: • Bite anyone • Injure anyone • Chase, threaten or attack a person or animals • Bark, howl or disturb anyone • Cause damage to property or other animals • Scatter garbage • Wander into any swimming, bathing or splash pool/park that is provided for public use

Animal owners are responsible for: • Picking up all feces produced by their dogs or cats both on and off their property • Not owning more than three dogs or three cats per household

Animal licencing Own a cat or dog? You are required to purchase an animal licence when your dog or cat is three months old. This licence is valid for one year from the date of purchase, and will help ensure you are reunited with your pet if they are lost. Renewals are mailed out one year after the date of purchase and every consecutive year after. Animal licences can be purchased online through

.ca or in person at City

Hall (400 Main Street SE) or the Municipal Police Building (2 Highland Park Way NE).

Caring for our natural environments Weeds thrive on maintained and manicured grass because they have access to moisture and light. Mowing only cuts the tops off the weeds, leaving the roots intact, which allows them to grow back and continue to spread. Healthy, thriving native vegetation outcompetes weeds by using moisture and creating shade. Allowing natural vegetation to establish itself will help eliminate weeds.

Did you know mowing grass and dumping material on City property contravene our City’s bylaws?

Can you spot the duck nest?

The City of Airdrie monitors natural areas and naturalized landscapes for weeds and pests and applies control where necessary.

Natural vegetation

Many animals use camouflage in natural areas to raise their young, forage for food and hide from predators. Did you know that some nesting birds in Airdrie can have up to 14 eggs? • Increases native plant, bird, fish and wildlife populations • Decreases weeds • Reduces soils erosion providing bank stability • Reduces dust and settles particles • Filtrates run-off and contaminants from entering the water • Removes carbon dioxide and other contaminants from the air • Is used as a buffer to lower noise pollution

Please be careful in our natural areas. Not all birds nest in trees. Don’t mow City property and stay on the pathways to help birds and other wild animals live safely.

What should you do? • Never mow/trim the grass on City property • Allow native vegetation to establish itself (three to five years) • Never dump your grass clippings or other materials in natural areas or on any City property

Residential waste, organics & recycling collection Collection and placement

Recycling

Material must be placed at the curb/alley by 7 a.m. on your collection day.

• Collected once weekly year round on the business day following your garbage and organics collection day.

Cart placement is the main reason collection is missed. Leave a minimum of one metre clearance around the entire cart to ensure trucks are able to access it.

• Do not place excess recycling next to your recycling cart. The recycling collection trucks are automated and equipped to pick up carts only and not excess recycling around it. If you have excess recycling, hold onto it for the next collection day or take it to the Recycle Depot.

For information regarding missed collection, delays or other conditions affecting collection, call Waste & Recycling at 403.948.0246 or visit www.airdrie.ca/wasteandrecycling

Garbage • Loose material is not accepted • One bag limit, no heavier than 25kg and no larger than 90cm x 127cm • Collected weekly year round • Extra bags require a $3 excess waste tag. (Maximum three tagged bags weekly) • Excess waste tags can be purchased at 1. Airdrie Public Library 2. City Hall 3. Airdrie Co-op 4. Genesis Place 5. Shoppers Drug Mart locations

Organics • Weekly collection April 1 to Nov. 31. The remainder of the year is bi-weekly collection. Do not place the following items in your organics cart: • Glass • Non-compostable plastic bags • Diapers and sanitary items • Plastics • Metal • Coffee/drink cups • Any non-compostable items

For a list of accepted items, visit www.airdrie.ca/wheredoesitgo

Pet waste

Pet waste – pet feces, kitty litter and cage shavings – is now accepted in your organics cart. Pet waste will be accepted in a paper or certified compostable bag or loose. Compostable bags

Biodegradable or oxo-biodegradable bags

Are made from a food by-product such as corn starch Are made from plastic and break down into compost Are usually opaque and feel softer than plastic bags

Prevent the flow of air, which is required during the composting process

Are guaranteed to completely break down during the composting process

Break apart into small plastic pieces, which do not completely decompose

Have a certified compostable logo

Diminish the quality of the finished compost

The City hopes that by accepting pet waste in the organics carts, more waste will be kept out of the landfill.

Never miss a collection day. Sign up through .ca to get a free text or email reminder for your waste, recycling and organics collection days.

The City of Airdrie holds bikes for a minimum of 30 days. If unclaimed, the bikes are offered for sale to Airdrie residents for a nominal fee. If you are looking for a lost or stolen bike, contact Waste & Recycling Services to see if the City has recovered your bike.

Reminders • Windy days make for wandering carts – write your address in the white block on your blue and green cart so it’s easy to identify if the wind moves it. • Moving? Please leave your carts behind. They are City of Airdrie property and are assigned to that address. • Damaged cart? Call Waste & Recycling to discuss options to repair or replace it.

The City does not inspect the bikes recovered nor have any knowledge of or warrant the condition the bikes are in. Therefore, the bikes are sold ‘as is’ with no liability on the part of the City. Furthermore, the purchaser, by paying the nominal fee, waives any rights or claims against the City and becomes solely responsible for the item purchased. Waste, organics & recycling reminders Public spaces

Multi-family

Recycling and organics recycling programs are now available at over 120 stations throughout Airdrie, in City facilities, parks and along high traffic pathways. Help us keep Airdrie clean by placing your organics, mixed recycling, beverage containers and garbage in the correct bins. Placing your waste in the correct bin minimizes contamination. If there is excessive contamination, the bin contents will be sent to the landfill as the material is not hand sorted. The signs on the bins show what goes where. Remember, the beverage container bins are for refundable items only (pop cans, juice boxes, etc.) not coffee cups or fountain drink cups.

The City of Airdrie multi-family recycling program has been mandatory since January 2018. If you live in an apartment building, residential condominium complex, or any residential building that does not currently receive City curbside collection services, a recycling program should be in place. Every multi-family property must accept mixed paper, cardboard, plastics #1 – 7 (except Styrofoam), plastic film (shopping bags etc.), refundable beverage containers (excluding glass) tetrapaks® (juice and soup boxes) and metal (food cans, aluminum pie plates).

Please note: Pet waste is not accepted in City parks’ organics bins located in city parks. Pet waste in City parks should be put in the garbage.

If you have questions specific to your recycling program, contact your property manager or condo board. If you do not have a program on site, please contact the City of Airdrie at education@airdrie.ca or 403.948.0246. For more information on multi-family recycling visit www.airdrie.ca/multifamily.

As winter approaches, the Airdrie Fire Department would like to remind everyone that ice on ponds and creeks may be tempting to play on, but playing on ice is very dangerous. Many factors can affect ice thickness and strength including: • Fluctuating temperatures • Depth and size of body of water • Flowing water under the ice • Chemicals like salt and silt from run-off found in storm ponds in the water including fluctuations in water levels • Logs, rocks and docks in the water absorbing heat from the sun The Airdrie Fire Department wants you to know that any of these factors can cause the ice to weaken and become dangerous. In order to stay safe, it is important to talk with your children about ice safety. It is also important to keep your pets on a leash when walking them near natural ice surfaces. For more information please contact Airdrie Fire Department, Public Education Division | 403.948.8880

SNOW CLEARING

PRIORITIES

P1 Arterial Roadways Major roadways such as Yankee Valley Boulevard, 8 Street, Main Street, school zones on school days and emergency services facilities. Priority one roads are to be cleared within 24 hours once snow stops falling. P2 Collector Roadways Major residential routes that connect the neighbourhood with the arterial roads such as Allen Street, Woodside Boulevard, Reunion Gateway, Meadowbrook Drive and bus routes. To be cleared within 48 hours once the snow stops falling. P3 Rural Roads Township Road 264 and 267, Range Road 291, arena parking lots, parks parking lots (Road classification less than 200 cars per day, gravel surface, cleared within 72 hours of a snow event assuming P1 and P2’s are finished. Equipment will be redeployed back on P1 and P2’s if another event starts. P4 City Facilities Fire halls, Town and Country Centre, Parks P5 Residential Roads Plowing of residential roads occurs when the road is rendered impassable or in extenuating circumstances. Snow is plowed to boulevards or to the side of the road. Residents are responsible for clearing windrows in front of their driveway entrances left behind by equipment. Residents are not permitted to place snow removed from sidewalks and driveways onto the roadway or public spaces – please place cleared snow onto your lawn.

DID YOU KNOW?

The highway bridges over the QEII and on/off ramps are cleared by the Province of Alberta. Questions? Contact Alberta Highway Services

?

What can residents do? Residents can make a big difference in ensuring the roads are safe and easily traveled in winter. Here are a few easy tips that will help our crews keep you moving.

SLOW

10m

If you live on a Priority 2 road (a collector road in your neighbourhood), park your car off the street when it is snowing. This will allow the plow truck to clear the snow to the curb and make driving and parking easier.

CONTACTS

Chip away at ice that builds up in the gutter to prevent a dangerous backup of water on the sidewalk during melting / refreezing.

Stay back at least 10m from plow trucks and do not pass the plow truck when it is plowing and / or sanding as material and road debris may damage your car.

City of Airdrie Call Centre, 403.948.8800 Roads, 23 East Lake Hill, 403.948.8415

We recommend winter tires on your vehicle for added safety.

Slow down and drive safely for the winter conditions. When conditions are at their worst, avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. Stay home while it’s snowing and let the City of Airdrie crews clear the streets for you.
