Child care services Looking for quality, safe child care while you work out or take a class? Utilize this service while you enjoy amenities at Genesis Place. Child care is a fun and friendly environment that is open and spacious. Children will take part in age appropriate activities through organized centres, games, exploration and play with a variety of equipment. Parents can book up to two hours per day.
Continuous bookings – Genesis Place has reserved a limited number of spaces during scheduled hours for adult patrons registered in a dry land or aquatic program. Patrons must provide their registration receipt for the program, and pay in full for the child care spots at the time of booking in order to reserve their space and access this service.
Our commitment to safety – All staff are first aid and CPR certified. Strict child to staff ratios are maintained through the booking process to ensure the safety of all children. Child care is set up to allow infants and younger children a safe place to crawl and toddle without the larger children around them. Staffing ratios are one staff member to six children (maximum up to two infants).
Fees (passes expire within one year of purchase)
Booking – Peak times in child care are weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. It is recommended to pre-book with as much notice as possible. To guarantee a spot during non-peak times, a minimum of 24 hour notice is required. Child care accepts bookings up to one month in advance. Drop-in is permitted when ratios have not been met.

A 10 level program for children ages 5 to 12 years Level 1
The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.
Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.
Level 3
This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.
Level 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.
Level 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.
Level 6
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.
Level 7
This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m), elementary backstroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.
Level 8
This level is an introduction to breaststroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.
Level 9
This level reviews the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary backstroke (50m), breaststroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.
Level 10
This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary backstroke 50m, breaststroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Genesis Place summer 2018
Kids Connection Preschool 2018/19 Ages 3 to 5 Children are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities including crafts, special events, sharing, imaginative centre play, circle time, sensory table activities, field trips, letter and number identification, creative movement in the dance studio and games, sports and skill development in the gymnasium. Our programming allows children the opportunity to develop and use new talents, skills and interests that will assist them when they enter the school system. Early literacy and language skills are explored by combining calendar activities, name recognition activities, letter of the week program, special helpers and reading and listening centres. Themes related to the world around us offer many opportunities to learn about a variety of topics and allow children to relate these ideas to their everyday life.
Social and emotional learning Social and emotional learning is explored daily in our classroom. Children have the opportunities to choose learning centres to play in with other classmates. Sensory tables open up the chance to explore varied textures and materials while sharing the experience with their peers. This time is a fantastic time to discover how to share and empathize with others in the classroom.
n atio istr ing g e R ngo is o
Creative experiences Creative experiences occur regularly in our program. Unstructured art and craft times allow everyone the opportunity to try out new materials and let their imaginations soar. Our centres are designed to allow the children a chance to play creatively using their imaginations to create their own experiences.
Physical growth and skill development Physical growth and skill development are a huge part of our program. Physical literacy is the ability for children to learn the skills necessary for success in being active for life. It is as important to healthy growth and development as the ABCs are important to literacy and learning for life. According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, being active can help young children maintain a healthy weight, improve movement skills, have fun, be happy, develop self-confidence and improve learning and attention. We focus on building those necessary skills such as hopping, jumping, skipping, catching, throwing and balancing. *There is a $25 non refundable fee due at registration. Registration starts Jan. 29, 2018 at 9 a.m. and is ongoing throughout the year.

Preschool, children & youth Genesis Place recreation programming Our approach to quality programming is based on the following:
Physical literacy We all know that you have to be able to walk before you can run, but did you know that you have to be able to hop before you can skip or balance before you can kick? Our programs focus on early physical literacy skills through games and activities to promote fun and enjoyment of an active lifestyle later on in life. It’s not about being the best; it’s about being able to participate!
The importance of play Some of the best childhood memories come from the freedom to play! Please join in our PLAY based programs where kids get to have fun and be kids. Whether it’s a parented program where you and your child can enjoy making new friends and playing together, or in an independent class where your child gets to explore different equipment and fun games on their own, it’s all about remembering how to PLAY!

Caring for our natural environments Weeds thrive on maintained and manicured grass because they have access to moisture and light. Mowing only cuts the tops of the weeds off, leaving the roots intact, allowing them to grow back and continue to spread. Healthy, thriving native vegetation outcompetes weeds by using moisture and creating shade. Allowing the natural vegetation to establish itself will help eliminate weeds in that area. The City of Airdrie monitors natural areas and naturalized landscapes for weeds and pests and applies control where necessary using best management practices.
Natural Vegetation • Increases native plant, bird, fish and wildlife populations • Decreases weeds • Reduces soils erosion providing bank stability • Reduces dust and settles particles • Filtrates run-off and contaminants from entering the water • Removes carbon dioxide and other contaminants from the air • Is used as a buffer to lower noise pollution
What should you do? • Never mow/trim the grass on any City property • Allow native vegetation to establish itself (3 – 5 years) • Never dump your grass clippings or other materials in natural areas or on any City property
Did you know mowing grass on City property and dumping material onto City property contravene our City’s bylaws?
Can you spot the duck nest?
Many animals use camouflage in natural areas to raise their young, forage for food and hide from predators. Did you know that some nesting birds in Airdrie can have up to 14 eggs? It is also important to know that not all birds nest in trees. Please be careful in our natural areas. Never mowing City property and staying on the pathways will help the birds and other wild animals live safely.

Caring for your yard Meadow Vole
The damage from the meadow vole is often observed in the spring when the snow melts. Quite often we notice trails in our turf and gardens left behind by voles. The meadow vole or field mouse is a compact, stocky rodent (14 to 19cm in length) with short legs and a short tail, quite often with grey fur. Voles eat a variety of plants, mostly grasses and occasionally the bark around the base of smaller trees. The meadow vole plays an important role in the ecological niche as a primary food source for raptors and carnivorous mammals. Although the meadow vole is native to our area, they can be a nuisance for home owners and gardeners by creating trails in the turf and gnawing on bark. Voles can be found in all areas of the City, but are most commonly found in areas bordering open spaces. If you have voles, trapping may be effective for controlling a small population in a residential yard. This can be done by setting a mouse snap trap perpendicular to their trails, a few inches away from the burrow entrance. Quite often turf damage will rejuvenate in the spring after raking the damage. The City of Airdrie Parks Department does not conduct vole control.
Free Wood Mulch • Available May – September at 15 East Lake Hill NE. Provided by the Parks Department • For residential use only • Residents are responsible for loading and transporting their own mulch
Mulching Information Why mulch?
• It helps retain moisture in the soil • It breaks down over time, adding organic matter and nutrients to the soil • It makes weeding easier • It helps regulate soil temperatures over the winter
How to mulch 1. Apply a 7-10 cm (3-4”) layer over the soil, after removing any weeds/grass 2. Keep mulch away from the base of your plants (at least 5cm/2”). Mulch piled up around tree trunks /shrubs will rot the bark and damage your plant 3. Repeat every 2 to 3 seasons for best results.
Prevention of Damage and Control • Wrap ¼” wire mesh around the base of smaller trees • Eliminate yard waste such as leaves and grass clipping piles • Clean up spilled bird feed as it may attract voles • Maintain turfgrass
For more information please contact the Parks Department at 403.948.8400

Monday to Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursday 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. CLOSED Sunday and statutory holidays.
Bikes: May 1 – Sept. 30 Keep a record of your bike’s serial number and a photo of your bike. This will help if it’s lost or stolen. Each year bicycles are recovered from parks and along pathways. The City of Airdrie holds bikes for a minimum of 30 days to give owners an opportunity to reclaim their bikes. If unclaimed, the bikes are offered for sale to Airdrie residents for a nominal fee. If you are looking for a lost or stolen bike, contact Waste & Recycling Services to see if the City has recovered your bike. The City does not inspect the bikes recovered nor have any knowledge of or warrants the condition the bikes are in. Therefore, the bikes are sold ‘as is’ with no liability on the part of the City. Furthermore, the purchaser, by paying the nominal fee, waives any rights or claims against the City and becomes solely responsible for the item purchased.

Reminders • Curbside collection requires your waste be put out by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Curbside collection runs until 7 p.m. Sign up for e-mail or text reminders at .ca. • Not sure where to put something? Visit www.airdrie.ca/wheredoesitgo. • Windy days make for wandering carts – be sure to write your address in the white block on your blue and green cart so it’s easy to identify if the wind moves it. • Cart not collected? Be sure there is one metre clearance around the entire cart, pull the cart out and away from fences and garages so the truck arms can reach around safely. • April 3, 2017, the garbage limit changed from two units of waste to one bag of waste per week. Loose material in garbage cans is not accepted, it must be contained within one 90cm x 127cm bag. If you have extra bags, you can purchase excess waste tags for $3 per bag from the following locations: Genesis Place, City Hall, Airdrie Public Library, Eastside Recycle Depot, Co-op, any of the four Airdrie Shoppers Drug Marts.
Public spaces Recycling and organics can now be found at select Airdrie parks and public facilities and will be expanded to more locations this fall. Keep an eye out for these convenient stations and help us keep Airdrie a clean community by placing your waste in the correct bins. The Public Facilities Recycling program accepts organics, mixed recycling, beverage containers, and garbage. Each one of these four materials goes in a separate bin and it is your responsibility to ensure materials are sorted correctly to minimize contamination. This includes garbage in the recycling or organics in the mixed

recycling, etc. If there is excessive contamination, the bin contents will be sent to the landfill as the material will not be hand sorted.
Pet waste Pet waste – pet feces, kitty litter and cage shavings – is now accepted in your organics cart. Pet waste will be accepted in a paper or certified compostable bag or loose. The City hopes that by accepting pet waste in the organics carts, more waste will be kept out of the landfill and will help make organics a year round habit.
Compostable bags
Biodegradable or oxo-biodegradable bags
Made from a food by-product such as corn starch and break down into compost
Are made from plastic
Are usually opaque and feel softer than plastic bags
Plastic bags prevent the flow of air, which is required during the composting process
Guaranteed to completely break down during the composting process
Break apart into small plastic pieces, which do not completely decompose
Have a certified compostable logo
Diminishes the quality of the finished compost
Please note: Pet waste is not accepted in city parks’ organics bins. Pet waste in city parks should be put in the garbage. BEVERAGE CONTAINERS
