Genesis Place AQUATICS fall 2013

A 10-level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.

Level 2

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.

Level 3

This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.

Level 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.

Level 5

This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.

Level 6

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), and introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.

Level 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres) and elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.

Level 8

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.

Level 9

This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.

Level 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Assessment & Taxation Attention owners of newly constructed homes Supplementary assessment & tax Your annual assessment notice reflects the physical condition of your property as of December 31 of the previous year. If construction is completed after December 31, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice to reflect the increased value of the property. A supplementary assessment and taxation notice will be mailed to you if your property: • is newly constructed and was completed or occupied during the current year, or • has had significant improvements or additions.

When is the supplementary assessment and taxation notice sent out? Notices are sent out in July and October. If your home was completed between January 1, 2013 and July 15, 2013, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice. The notice will be mailed on July 29 and payment is due by August 30, 2013. If you haven’t received your notice by August 9, contact Taxation at 403.948.8856. If your home is completed between July 16, 2013 and October 15, 2013, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice. The notice will be mailed October 28 and payment is due by November 29, 2013. If you haven’t received your notice by November 8, 2013, contact Taxation at 403.948.8856.

How are supplementary taxes determined? Your property taxes are determined by prorating the supplementary assessment by the number of months the building has been completed and/or occupied for the year, less the original assessment, and then multiplying the revised assessment by the tax rate. Residential single family

Type of property: Total Assessment Less previous assessment on annual tax notice Supplementary Assessment

$350,000 $150,000 $200,000

Improvement completed and/or occupied on pro-rated supplementary assessment ($200,000 x 6/12)

July 1 $100,000

Assessments within the City of Airdrie are based on typical market values as of July 1, 2012. For assessment inquiries, visit airdrie.ca/assessment or phone 403.948.8855. For taxation inquiries, visit airdrie.ca/taxation or phone 403.948.8856.

Saving energy is part of being a sustainable community Did you know that the majority of our energy supply is generated using non-renewable fossil fuels, resulting in environmental impacts such as increased greenhouse gas emissions and air quality concerns? Reducing our energy use and meeting Airdrie’s energy needs in an efficient and more sustainable way is one of the 10 goals in the AirdrieOne Sustainability Plan. Small actions and joint efforts by the City and residents can go a long way in reaching this goal.

The City of Airdrie’s Energy Efforts The City of Airdrie is committed to being more energyefficient and reducing the environmental footprint of City operations and buildings. Below are some examples of how the City is taking action: • Solar-powered crosswalk lights improve pedestrian safety while taking advantage of Airdrie’s 2,200 hours of sunshine every year. • King’s Heights and Chinook Winds Fire Halls use the sun as a free, clean source of power for solar tube lighting and heat for solar hot water heating. • Traffic and pedestrian signals were retrofitted with light-emitting diode (LED) technology, which uses 80 per cent less energy and last five times longer than conventional bulbs. • Chinook Winds Regional Park will use the sun to power lighting for improved security and visibility throughout the park. • City hall energy efficiency efforts include using occupancy sensor lighting, switching to more efficient light bulbs and staff efforts to ensure lights, computers and other equipment are shut off when not in use.

Ways You Can Save Energy You can reduce energy consumption, save on home energy bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by implementing a few small changes around the house. Here are six tips that can set you on the path to energy reduction.

• Switching to compact fluorescents (CFLs) from incandescent bulbs can make a big difference. Just replacing your five most-used incandescent bulbs with CFLs uses up to 75 per cent less energy and saves approximately $30 a year. • Look for the ENERGY STAR® label when you’re replacing appliances, and ask for them when you’re shopping. Imagine a fridge that uses less energy than a 75-watt light bulb — that’s how efficient the newest models are. • Check your furnace filter monthly during the winter and replace it if it looks dirty. A properly maintained furnace will reduce energy consumption and could save you up to five per cent on your heating costs. • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your home’s temperature settings when you’re sleeping or away. When properly set, a thermostat can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 10 per cent. • Check the weather-stripping on all windows and doors and replace if worn or damaged. The typical heating cost savings of weather-stripping is approximately $20 per door per year. • Use a window insulation kit in the winter to help make sure drafts aren’t giving your thermostat a false reading. Window plastic acts as a buffer against drafts and the extra still air space can give a nice boost to your home’s ability to hold heat.
