A 10-level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.

Level 2

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.

Level 3

This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.

Level 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.

Level 5

This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.

Level 6

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.

Level 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres), elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.

Level 8

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.

Level 9

This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.

Level 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Genesis Place Recreation Programming Our approach to quality programming is based on the following:

Physical Literacy We all know that you have to be able to walk before you can run, but did you know that you have to be able to hop before you can skip or balance before you can kick? Our programs focus on early physical literacy skills through games and activities to promote fun and enjoyment of an active lifestyle later on in life. It’s not about being the best; it’s about being able to participate!

The Importance of Play Some of the best childhood memories come from the freedom to PLAY! Please join in our PLAY based programs where kids get to have fun and be kids. Whether it’s a parented program where you and your child can enjoy making new friends and playing together, or in an independent class where your child gets to explore different equipment and fun games on their own, it’s all about remembering how to PLAY!

Parented Programs These classes require active parent participation with their child.

Fall appliance safety tips Large Appliance Safety The basement is an area often forgotten when it comes to fire safety, it is the place the big appliances reside and things are often piled and forgotten about in this area of the house. Below are some tips to ensure your basement is fire-safe.

Furnaces and Water Heaters Routine maintenance of furnaces and water heaters decrease your chance of fire as well as the production of deadly carbon monoxide gas. Safety checklist: • Do routine checks of your furnace and water heater. Look for rusted and loose parts or other signs of deterioration like water stains and leakage. • Schedule an annual furnace checkup. A check up in early fall ensures that it is ready to go before the real cold of winter hits. • Keep appliances clear of all combustibles. These include boxes, paint/varnish cans, cleaning supplies, rags and clothing. • Do not use flammable liquids like gasoline or paint thinners near furnaces or water heaters. The vapors can travel through the air and explode if they reach the pilot light.

Dryers As the weather cools, people get out their heavier, fuzzier clothes. These clothes leave behind much more lint than lighter weight clothes and can become a real fire hazard. Safety checklist: • Clean the lint filter before or after each use and wipe away any lint that has accumulated around the drum. • Make sure the dryer is plugged into an outlet suitable for its electrical needs. • Do not run the dryer without a lint filter. • Ensure the air exhaust vent pipe is unobstructed and the outdoor flap opens readily. • Do not leave the dryer running and leave the house.

Throughout the month of October fire crews will be conducting the ConocoPhillips Home Safety Program in designated communities assisting residents with smoke detector, battery installations and home safety checks.

Fire Safety Day

Saturday October 4 Chinook Winds Fire Station 1 - 4 p.m.

Everyone welcome!

The Airdrie Fire Department will be in the community watching for the safety of trick or treaters on October 31. We ask drivers and parents to be extra cautious on October 31. City of Airdrie In the City guide fall 2014

Assessment & Taxation Attention owners of newly constructed homes Supplementary assessment & tax Your annual assessment notice reflects the physical condition of your property as of December 31 of the previous year. If construction is completed after December 31, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice to reflect the increased value of the property. A supplementary assessment and taxation notice will be mailed to you if your property: • is newly constructed and was completed or occupied during the current year, or • has had significant improvements or additions.

When is the supplementary assessment and taxation notice sent out? Notices are sent out in July and October. If your home was completed between January 1, 2014 and July 15, 2014, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice. The notice will be mailed on July 28 and payment is due by August 29, 2014. If you haven’t received your notice by August 11 contact Taxation at 403.948.8856. If your home is completed between July 16, 2014 and October 15, 2014, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice. The notice will be mailed October 31 and payment is due by December 1, 2014. If you haven’t received your notice by November 10, 2014, contact Taxation at 403.948.8856.

How are supplementary taxes determined? Your property taxes are determined by prorating the supplementary assessment by the number of months the building has been completed and/or occupied for the year, less the original assessment and then multiplying the revised assessment by the tax rate. Type of property: Residential single family Total Assessment

Small steps for a sustainable Airdrie

The small things we do add up. Although it isn’t always easy to change the way we do things, our efforts make a positive impact on our community today and for tomorrow. The AirdrieONE Sustainability Plan, adopted by Council, outlines 10 common goals to guide our actions over the next five to 10 years as we create a more sustainable community and ensure a high quality of life for today’s citizens and those to come. Each of us has a part to play in reaching our 10 common goals by the small steps we take. Here are some ideas of ways to make small changes that make a big difference.

Use water wisely, it is our most precious resource. • Install low flow toilets, showerheads and tap aerators in your home. • Fix all toilet and tap leaks. • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

Save energy and money on your utility bill. • Look for the ENERGY STAR® label when buying new appliances. • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust your home’s temperature settings when you’re sleeping or away. • Use a power bar to turn off your electronics.

Shop wisely. • Use your buying power to support environmentallyresponsible businesses and products. • Shop locally whenever possible.

Move around sustainably. • Use the bus, a carpool, your bike or your own two feet to get to work or school, rather than driving in your car alone.

• Keep a jug of water in the fridge for cold drinking water, rather than running the tap.

• Avoid unnecessary idling. If you’re stopped for more than 60 seconds – except in traffic – turn off the engine.

Reduce waste bound for the landfill.

For more sustainability information and tips visit www.airdrieone.ca

• Recycle as much as possible through Airdrie’s two recycling depots. • Use the curbside organics program to turn organic waste into compost and reduce landfill disposal costs. • Purchase products with less packaging when shopping. • Try reusable shopping bags and containers, instead of disposable ones.

Curbside Organics Recycling Collection • A pick up schedule is available online at Airdrie.ca/organics. • Remember to put your cart out on collection day even if it isn’t full. • Have your green cart out by 7 a.m. • Ensure there is one metre of clearance around the cart to allow the automated truck to pick up the cart safely. • Place your green cart where you normally place your garbage (front street or back alley pick up). • Ensure the front faces out.

Green cart care • Your cart can be stored in your garage, by your house or in a shed. Keep it in a shaded, cool spot. • Clean the carts the same way you would clean a garbage can - rinse it periodically to wash off any debris. Empty the water from the cart into your lawn or garden (please do not allow rinsing water to wash into the storm water system) and allow it to dry completely. • The green cart is the property of City of Airdrie but the responsibility lies with the homeowner. The green cart remains with the home if you move.

Yard waste • Yard waste can be placed loose in your green cart or placed in a paper yard waste bag and then put in your green cart. • Try layering your cart contents (food and yard waste) to reduce the possibility of wet organics becoming stuck in the cart. • Place newspaper on the bottom and/or sides of your green cart to absorb liquid. • Yard waste including leaves, grass clippings, pumpkins, plants, and brush/shrub/flower trimmings can be placed in your green cart. Similar items that do not fit in the cart can be held until your next collection day, or grass and leaves can be taken to the Eastside Recycle Depot. • Tree stumps, roots, and branches are not accepted in the organics program and can be taken to the Airdrie Transfer Site for a fee.

We welcome all questions and comments on the organics recycling program, call 403.948.0246 or email organics@airdrie.ca

Plastic bags are the #1 contaminant in organics recycling. Never use plastic garbage bags or grocery bags for organics recycling.
