AQUATIC PROGRAMS open for registration on August 23
A 10-level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.
Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.
Level 3
This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.
Level 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.
Level 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.
Level 6
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.
Level 7
This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres), elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.
Level 8
This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.
Level 9
This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.
Level 10
This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Genesis Place recreation programming Our approach to quality programming is based on the following:
Physical literacy We all know that you have to be able to walk before you can run, but did you know that you have to be able to hop before you can skip or balance before you can kick? Our programs focus on early physical literacy skills through games and activities to promote fun and enjoyment of an active lifestyle later on in life. It’s not about being the best; it’s about being able to participate!
The importance of play Some of the best childhood memories come from the freedom to PLAY! Please join in our PLAY based programs where kids get to have fun and be kids. Whether it’s a parented program where you and your child can enjoy making new friends and playing together, or in an independent class where your child gets to explore different equipment and fun games on their own, it’s all about remembering how to PLAY!

Fall Safety There is something about the cooler months and curling up with a good book in a warm place. But did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent heating fires or carbon monoxide incidents from happening. • Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment, like furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater • Have a three-foot ‘kid-free zone’ around open fires and space heaters • Never use your oven to heat your home • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. A check up in early fall ensures that it is ready to go before the real cold of winter hits. • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
• CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound. • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting height. • Test CO alarms at least once a month; replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow. • During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow build-up
And ALWAYS, ALWAYS remember to check your smoke alarms!
• Ensure portable space heaters are plugged directly into an outlet and not an extension cord. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide.

Assessment & Taxation Attention owners of newly constructed homes Supplementary assessment & tax Your annual assessment notice reflects the physical condition of your property as of December 31 of the previous year. If construction is completed after December 31, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice to reflect the increased value of the property. A supplementary assessment and taxation notice will be mailed to you if your property: • is newly constructed and was completed or occupied during the current year, or • has had significant improvements or additions.
When is the supplementary assessment and taxation notice sent out? Notices are sent out in July and October. If your home was completed between January 1, 2015 and July 15, 2015, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice. The notice will be mailed on July 27, 2015 and payment is due by August 28, 2015. If you haven’t received your notice by August 10, 2015 contact Taxation at 403.948.8856. If your home is completed between July 16, 2015 and October 15, 2015, you will receive a supplementary assessment and taxation notice. The notice will be mailed October 30, 2015 and payment is due by November 30, 2015. If you haven’t received your notice by November 13, 2015 contact Taxation at 403.948.8856.
How are supplementary taxes determined? Your property taxes are determined by prorating the supplementary assessment by the number of months the building has been completed and/or occupied for the year, less the original assessment, and then multiplying the revised assessment by the tax rate. Type of property: Total Assessment Less previous assessment on annual tax notice Supplementary Assessment
Residential single family $350,000 $150,000 $200,000
Improvement completed and/or occupied on pro-rated supplementary assessment
July 1
($200,000 x 6/12)
$100,000
Assessments within the City of Airdrie are based on typical market values as of July 1 of the previous year. For assessment inquiries, visit airdrie.ca/assessment or phone 403.948.8855. For taxation inquiries, visit airdrie.ca/taxation or phone 403.948.8856.

Plastic Bags Plastic bags can be recycled at the Eastside Recycle Depot
Diapers and wipes Diapers and wipes need to be placed in your regular garbage

“Cart placement is the main reason collection is missed. Check website for proper placement.” Green cart care • Your cart can be stored in your garage, by your house or in a shed. Keep it in a shaded, cool spot. • Clean the carts the same way you would clean a garbage can — rinse it periodically to wash off any debris. Empty the water from the cart onto your lawn or garden (please do not allow rinsing water to wash into the storm water system) and allow it to dry completely. • The green cart is the property of the City of Airdrie but the responsibility lies with the homeowner. The green cart remains with the home if you move.
Yard waste • Yard waste can be placed loose in your green cart or placed in a paper yard waste bag and then put in your green cart. • Try to layer your cart contents (food and yard waste) to reduce the possibility of wet organics becoming stuck in the cart. • Place newspaper on the bottom and/or sides of your green cart to absorb liquid or help with freezing in the winter. • Yard waste including leaves, grass clippings, pumpkins, plants and brush/shrubs/flower trimmings can be placed in your green cart. Similar items that do not fit in the cart can be held until your next collection day, or taken to the Eastside Recycle Depot.
Tips • Do not use plastic bags for food or yard waste. Biodegradable and oxo-degradable bags are not the same as compostable bags and will contaminate the organic material. • Ensure your kitchen catcher liner is compostable. Plastic bags do not compost and will contaminate the organic materials. • Your kitchen catcher can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. • Sprinkle baking soda in your kitchen catcher and green cart to minimize odours.
We welcome all questions and comments about the organics program. Contact us at 403.948.0246 or email organics@airdrie.ca.
• Tree stumps, roots and large branches are not accepted in the organics program and can be taken to the Airdrie Transfer Site for a fee.
Plastic bags are the #1 contaminant in our green carts. Never use plastic bags in your green cart.

City of Airdrie parks and pathways Here are some fall lawn maintenance tips from your City of Airdrie Parks department.
Save time and mulch your leaves! Instead of raking and bagging your leaves this fall, mulch them with your lawn mower instead. This process not only saves you time, but also fertilizes your trees, shrubs and lawns. The leaves will break down throughout the winter and will add valuable organic matter and nutrients to your yard the following spring. This process is known as nutrient cycling. It occurs everywhere in nature except where people intervene and ‘clean-up’ their properties. Yards that are regularly raked require more frequent chemical fertilizer, so mulching can actually save money too. To mulch with your mower, set the deck to the highest setting. Mulching blades can replace your traditional mowing blade for even finer mulch. It is best to mulch leaves a few times (as they fall) prior to the first snowfall.
More great fall lawn maintenance tips: Performing some fall yard maintenance on lawns can have a great impact to the quality of turf in the spring. Try these helpful tips to make sure your yard is ready to go for spring. 1. Mow grass to a height of eight centimeters (three inches). 2. Clean-up leaf debris and litter in yard. 3. Fall aeration can be beneficial followed by over-seeding with grass seed. 4. Top-dress yard with a light layer of loam or compost, be sure to rake in topdressing material. 5. Fill in and seed any bare areas in the yard. 6. Apply a fall fertilizer application, many good fall fertilizers can be purchased at your local hardware store or gardening center.
