A 10-level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.
Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.
Level 3
This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.
Level 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.
Level 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.
Level 6
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.
Level 7
This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres), elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.
Level 8
This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.
Level 9
This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.
Level 10
This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Genesis Place FITNESS & WELLNESS summer 2015
Fitness services Fitness assessment Free: fitness profile
Are you meeting your fitness goals? How is your current fitness program contributing toward your overall health? A Genesis Place fitness professional can provide some insight into your current health and well-being with this complimentary one-on-one session. Each basic fitness test includes blood pressure screening, height and weight measurement and a flexibility and grip strength test. Using these results we offer suggestions to help you reach your goals.
Functional Movement screen analysis The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a ranking and grading system that documents seven movement patterns that are key to functional, pain free movement. The FMS identifies dangerous movement patterns so that they can be addressed. It also indicates an individual’s readiness to perform exercise so that realistic goals can be set and achieved. Move better and feel better today. Cost: $97.50/assessment
Body composition A certified exercise physiologist (CEP) will perform a skin fold measurement test, which will accurately measure your current body composition and your body fat percentage. With this information you can track changes in your body composition as you progress through your fitness routine. This is a great starting point or progress measurement tool. You must be at least 16 years of age to have this appraisal. Cost: $32.45 for one test. Watch for exciting changes to our fitness profile services.
Hockey combine fitness testing
Sport performance testing is an integral component to an athlete’s short and long-term development. The purpose of hockey combine testing is to determine where an individual’s strengths and weaknesses lie in relation to the physiological requirements of hockey’s demands. We also aim to provide a measure of progress in response to prescribed training programs. Included within the report is a comparison of each player’s scores in relation to elite major junior hockey players. Find out how you measure up. Cost: $100 (one and a half hour session)
Summer hockey dry land training at
Includes: • Pre and post hockey combine fitness testing • Qualified trainers with a bachelor of Science or Kinesiology degree • Small group size (four to six participants per group) • One hour sessions

Summer Safety The warmer months are a great time to spend time outdoors and participate in outdoor activities; however, outdoor fun, hot weather and increased road travel can lead to a greater number of injuries and deaths. Airdrie Fire Department provides the following information for you to share with family, friends and co-workers. Keep those around you safe throughout spring, summer and beyond.
AFD offers suggestions to avoid heat-related illness during the summer: • Keep hydrated. Drink water or sports drinks. • If you decide to drink an alcoholic or caffeinated beverage, be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after. • If you take any medication regularly, ask your doctor if you need to be extra cautious when outdoors and in the sun and heat. Heat-related illness can affect anyone not used to hot weather, especially when it’s combined with high humidity. Symptoms of heat related illness include • severe thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting and sometimes diarrhea. • profuse sweating • clammy or pale skin • dizziness • rapid pulse • altered mental status (behaviour) such as irritation, agitation, or even aggressive behavior and seizures can occur. What to do • sit in the shade • drink cool water or a sports drink • gently apply wet towels • call for emergency medical help
Summer sun safety Heat-related illness can pose a risk when temperatures rise. It is important to keep hydrated and rest frequently in shaded areas when in the heat. Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, and can contribute to dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Skateboarding Skateboarding is a popular activity enjoyed by many in spring and summer. However, it’s also an activity that causes many unintentional injuries. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in 2010 there were 130,627 skateboard injuries with 46 percent involving children younger than 15 years old. Fractures are a frequent type of injury. Deaths as a result of collisions with motor vehicles and from falls are also reported. Irregular riding surfaces account for more than half of the skateboarding injuries caused by falls. Wrist injury is the number one injury, usually a sprain or a fracture. Skateboarders who have been skating for less than a week suffered one-third of the injuries. When experienced riders suffered injuries, it was usually from falls that were caused by rocks and other irregularities in the riding surface. • Give your board a safety check each time before you ride • Always wear safety gear • Never ride in the street
• If you’re visiting a public pool, keep an eye on your kids. Lifeguards aren’t babysitters. • Never consume alcohol when operating a boat. • Always use approved personal flotation devices (life jackets). • Don’t underestimate the power of water. Even rivers and lakes can have undertows.
• Obey the laws – observe traffic and areas where you can and cannot skate
• Always have a first-aid kit and emergency phone contacts handy. Parents should be trained in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
• Don’t skate in crowds of non-skaters
• Teach your children these four key swimming rules:
• Only one person per skateboard
• Always swim with a buddy
• Never hitch a ride from a car, bicycle, etc.
• Don’t dive into unknown bodies of water – jump feet first to avoid hitting your head on a shallow bottom
Water safety Water is a big part of summer fun but drowning claims many lives each year. Although all age groups are at risk, children four years old and younger have the highest death rate due to drowning, representing more than 14 per cent. Most drowning and near-drowning incidents happen when a child falls into a pool or is left alone in the bathtub.
• Don’t push or jump on others • Be prepared for an emergency
• Never leave a child alone near water: on the beach, at a pool or in the bathtub. If you must leave, take your child with you. • Enroll children older than age three in swimming lessons taught by qualified instructors. But keep in mind that lessons don’t make your child “drownproof.” • Always follow posted safety precautions when visiting water parks. City of Airdrie In the City guide summer 2015

Pet waste/litter Pet waste/litter needs to be placed in your regular garbage
Plastic Bags Plastic bags can be recycled at the Eastside Recycle Depot
Diapers and wipes Diapers and wipes need to be placed in your regular garbage
Plastics Clean any plastic food containers and recycle them at either the Eastside Recycle Depot or Westside Recycle Depot
Foam cups, containers and packaging Foam products need to be placed in your regular garbage
“Cart Placement is the main reason collection is missed. Check website for propert placement.’ Green cart care • Your cart can be stored in your garage, by your house or in a shed. Keep it in a shaded, cool spot. • Clean the carts the same way you would clean a garbage can- rinse it periodically to wash off any debris. Empty the water from the cart onto your lawn or garden (please do not allow rinsing water to wash into the storm water system) and allow it to dry completely. • The green cart is the property of the City of Airdrie but the responsibility lies with the homeowner. The green cart remains with the home if you move.
Yard waste • Yard waste can be placed loose in your green cart or placed in a paper yard waste bag and then put in your green cart. • Try to layer your cart contents (food and yard waste) to reduce the possibility of wet organics becoming stuck in the cart. • Place newspaper on the bottom and/or sides of your green cart to absorb liquid or help with freezing in the winter. • Yard waste including leaves, grass clippings, pumpkins, plants and brush/shrubs/flower trimmings can be placed in your green cart. Similar items that do not fit in the cart can be held until your next collection day, or can be taken to the Eastside Recycle Depot.
Tips • Do not use garbage bags for food or yard waste. • Ensure your kitchen catcher liner is compostable. Plastic bags do not compost and will contaminate the organic materials. • Your kitchen catcher can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. • Sprinkle baking soda in your kitchen catcher and green cart to minimize odours. Biodegradable bags are not the same as compostable bags and will contaminate the organic material.
We welcome all questions and comments on the organics recycling program. Contact us at 403.948.0246 or email organics@airdrie.ca.
• Tree stumps, roots and branches are not accepted in the organics program and can be taken to the Airdrie Transfer Site for a fee.
Plastic bags are the #1 contaminant in organics recycling. Never use plastic garbage bags or grocery bags for organics recycling.

Dealing with the American crow The American Crow is a very intelligent and highly adaptable bird found throughout the province. Although the crow is most noticeable in the spring and summer, they are found in Airdrie throughout the entire year. The crow builds a nest in coniferous and deciduous trees and can be considered a nuisance during the spring and summer months because of their noise, and the droppings and mess they leave behind. The crow can also become a nuisance when adult crows ‘dive bomb’ humans who get close to a nest with young crows. This problem usually subsides after the young crows have left the nest. The crow is an opportunistic feeder and will eat almost anything, including other birds’ eggs. Residents who do not want a crow’s nest on their property can remove the nest in early spring if they notice crows beginning to build a nest on their property. There are some frightening devices available to place on your property to scare the birds in hopes that they will not stay around, this can be a short term solution. The use of garbage containers with lids to store garbage outdoors can also help eliminate a food source on your property. The City of Airdrie Parks department does not control crows in park spaces.
