Ages 3 to 6
For children three to six years old who have not previously taken swimming lessons, Sea Otter is where they will enter the program. Please Note • Hand in previous report card to swim instructor on the first day of class.
• Genesis Place reserves the right to combine levels without notice if classes do not fill to minimum requirements. • If you are registering your child into a multi-level swim class, please inform the instructor of your child’s swim level on the first day of class.

Genesis Place AQUATICS winter/spring 2014
A 10-level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.
Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.
Level 3
This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.
Level 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.
Level 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.
Level 6
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.
Level 7
This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres), elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.
Level 8
This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.
Level 9
This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.
Level 10
This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Winter Fire Safety There is something lovely about curling up next to a warm fireplace during the chilly winter months. But did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent heating fires or carbon monoxide incidents from happening. • Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment such as a furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater. • Have a three-foot ‘kid-free zone’ around open fires and space heaters.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting height. • Test CO alarms at least once a month; replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if the garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow. • During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace are clear of snow build-up
• Never use your oven to heat your home. • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. • Always use the fuel specified by the manufacturer for fuel burning space heaters.
Finally, always remember to CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARMS!
• Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. • Ensure portable space heaters are plugged directly into an outlet and do not use extension cords. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless, colourless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil and methane) burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide. • CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.

Assessment & Taxation Attention property owners 2014 annual assessment notices The 2014 annual assessment notices will be mailed to all property owners on January 27, 2014. There will be a sixty (60) day review period which will end on March 28, 2014. The assessed value will reflect the value of property based on July 1, 2013 economic conditions, and its physical condition and characteristics as of December 31, 2013. The property assessment notices are mailed in advance of the property tax notices, to allow owners the opportunity to review their assessments and raise any concerns they may have about their assessed value before taxes are calculated.
How do I know if my assessment is correct? You are encouraged to review your assessment during the 60 day review period. First, read your Assessment Notice carefully. Is your name, address and school support correct? Check the property classification (residential, farmland, non- residential). Does it correctly describe your property? Next, compare your assessment to the assessments of other properties similar in size, age, quality, condition and location available at www.airdrie.ca/ airdriemap. If, after having compared your new assessment to the market value conditions as of July 1st of the previous year and to the assessment of similar neighboring properties, you have questions or concerns about the information on your notice; contact an assessor at 403.948.8855.
How is market value assessment determined? Market value means the amount a property might be worth if it is sold. The City of Airdrie values property based on provincial legislation and regulations. The purpose of the assessment is not to reflect a single sale price, but to assess all properties at typical market value on the same valuation date. It is important to realize that as assessment values increase or decrease, the tax rates will change accordingly. Taxation notices will be mailed on May 30, 2014. Property taxes are due June 30, 2014. (This deadline does not apply to the Monthly Tax Payment Plan customers). Taxes are for the January to December 2014 time frame. It is important that taxes are paid by the due date or they will be subject to a 5% penalty on July 4, 2014 and a further 9% penalty on August 1, 2014.
Pay your taxes monthly If you would like to enroll in the Monthly Tax Payment Plan, please visit the City of Airdrie website at www.airdrie.ca/taxation/mtpp_index.cfm to fill out an application form or call the Taxation Department at 403.948.8856.

Protecting the natural environment is part of being a sustainable community Nose Creek is one of our community’s greatest natural amenities, and a defining feature of our city. One of the 10 goals in the AirdrieOne Sustainability Plan reflects this value and makes the protection of Nose Creek natural areas a priority that requires action from the City and residents.
Keeping stormwater clean is an important part of reaching this sustainability goal. Each time it rains or the snow melts, the roads, sidewalks, driveways and lawns are essentially getting a shower. Pollutants such as dirt, oil, salt, garbage, pet waste and lawn chemicals are washed away into the storm drains. The City uses stormwater ponds to treat and manage the release of this water, but it does eventually end up in the creek. This means our everyday actions can have an impact on the health of Nose Creek and the wildlife that call it home. The good news is that making a few small changes can make a big difference.
Four ways you can help keep stormwater clean: 1. Wash your vehicle at a carwash to keep soapy water and dirt out of the storm drains, and to be in compliance with Sewer Bylaw- Section 5 (3). 2. Safely dispose of household hazardous wastes, such as pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, paints, glues and cleaners at the Eastside Recycling Depot (21 East Lake Hill). 3. Use a broom and dustpan to clean your sidewalk and driveway, instead of hosing dirt down the storm drain. 4. Always pick up pet waste and dispose of properly.
The City of Airdrie is also working to keep Nose Creek healthy: • The City works with fellow members of the Nose Creek Watershed Partnership on various initiatives that focus on improving water quality and protecting the wetlands and streams of the Nose Creek Watershed. • The City is working on policies and bylaws to ensure that development gives priority to protecting environmentally sensitive areas and has proper building setbacks from Nose Creek. • Nose Creek restoration work is done such as creek bank repairs and reestablishing vegetation along the shorelines. • An annual street sweeping program cleans up 600700 tonnes of winter road sediments and other debris from city streets to keep it out of the storm drains. • A maintenance program for stormwater infrastructure includes the cleaning, inspecting, and repairing of pipes, storm drains, outfalls, and stormponds. • The City is also piloting the use of a natural biological process to clean algae-causing pollutants in stormwater ponds. For more sustainability information and tips visit airdrieone.ca.
