BUILDING CLOSURE: July 24 - 27
NO CLASSES: July 1 and August 4, 2014
A 10-level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.
Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.
Level 3
This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.
Level 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.
Level 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.
Level 6
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.
Level 7
This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres), elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.
Level 8
This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.
Level 9
This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.
Level 10
This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Window Safety Tips Spring is the perfect time to open windows, air out the house and let the fresh breeze in. But every year, many children die and hundreds suffer injuries sustained from falls out of open windows and balconies. Screens are not safety devices; they are designed to keep insects out, not children in. Even a small toddler can push through a typical mesh screen and fall through a window. As well, it is good practice to do a spring safety check on all window fixtures to ensure window blind cords are not an entanglement risk to children. The Airdrie Fire Department wants to remind all parents and caregivers of the following window safety tips: • Keep windows closed and locked when children are around, and keep furniture and anything that a child can climb on away from windows to reduce the chances of a child falling through a window. When opening a window for ventilation chose one that a child cannot reach.
• A closed window is not a safe window. Children can easily learn to use window hand cranks. Remove them if they are in reach of small hands. • Set and enforce rules that your child cannot play near windows especially the activity many kids love – jumping on the bed. • Use window guards and stops on windows above the first floor. Studies have shown they can reduce falls by 35%. Window stops prevent the window from opening more than 10 cm. Window guards are a barrier in front of the window. They are available at local hardware, home renovation or home safety stores. An internet search will also find on-line stores that can ship the products to you. • Strategic landscaping may lessen the extent of injury sustained in the event of a fall. Shrubs and soft edging such as wood chips or grass under a window can cushion potential falls. • Between 1989 and 2009, 27 children died and 23 children were injured by becoming entangled in window blind cords as reported by Health Canada. Cut the window cords short and tie them out of reach. Young children find window blind or curtain cords interesting and are attracted to them. • Cribs, beds, high chairs and playpens should not be placed by window blind or curtain cords. Putting your children’s furniture at the level of the window, especially at times when they are not constantly supervised, makes it easier for children to reach the window blind or curtain cords.

Water saving tips for a healthy and sustainable yard Water is a precious natural resource. With a limited supply and a rapidly growing population, it is increasingly important that we use water wisely to ensure we continue to have the water we need in the future. During the summer months water demand increases so there are many opportunities to adopt water saving habits that can make a difference. Outdoor watering activities can account for as much as 30 per cent of an annual water bill. Small changes when planning and maintaining your yard can help you save water and money, while still having a beautiful, healthy yard.
Design for water conservation Group plants with similar watering needs together so you can water only those plants that need it and not overwater those that don’t. Also, shape plant groupings to ensure your sprinkler, watering can, or soaker hoses can easily and efficiently accommodate them.
Use mulch A layer of bark, wood chips or stones over the soil in your plant beds can keep water in the soil, help stop weed growth, and prevent soil from washing away.
Avoid mowing grass too short When you mow your lawn, keep the grass at a length of 2.5 to 3 inches (6.5 to 7.5 cm). Longer grass shades its own roots from the scorching sun and helps choke out those pesky weeds, like dandelions. Longer grass also helps create a healthier, hardier lawn by allowing longer roots to develop and holding moisture better so you don’t have to water as much.
Aerating your lawn Aeration allows air, water and fertilizer to reach the roots. Leave the small round cones of soil that are cut out of the ground. Rake over these pieces to break them up. The micro-organisms in the cores will help to decompress thatch and allow your lawn to absorb more moisture.
Use a rain barrel Let Mother Nature help you water your plants with soft, non-chlorinated, free rainwater. Rain barrels can be purchased at the Eastside Recycling Depot — 21 East Lake Hill ($45 for Airdrie residents; $65 for nonresidents).
Use a broom and dustpan Sweep your driveway and sidewalks, instead of using a hose to wash away debris. Dispose of debris in the garbage to save water and help keep it from washing into the storm drains. For more sustainability information and tips visit airdrieone.ca.

The ins and outs of water conservation With Alberta’s water usage and demand rising, the potential of water rates increasing is a certainty. It costs money to treat, transport, and dispose of water, as well as maintain infrastructure. However, this price does not include the environmental cost associated with withdrawing water. In these days of water scarcity, it is more important than ever for Albertans to conserve water, and to use it as efficiently and productively as possible. Therefore, using water efficient plumbing fixtures such as low flow toilets, shower heads, faucets and washing machines are strongly recommended. Avoid running the tap for prolonged periods to rinse fruits and vegetables, toothbrushes and filling a cold glass of water to drink. Outside, the majority of wasted water is from overwatering lawns. The target of 1 of water per week is recommended, and using an empty can near a sprinkler to measure amount of water is a great way to measure your water use. Using a certified irrigation contractor (CIC) for installations or to perform an audit on your system will also save you money. Xeriscaping is an alternate approach to building a sustainable landscape and reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation. Using drought tolerant plant material and organic soils will greatly reduce the amount of water required. If we each save a little, it can add up major savings in water, energy and money, while ultimately preventing us from depleting our source.

Curbside Organics recycling tips
Collection • A pick up schedule is available online at Airdrie.ca/organics. • Remember to put your cart out on collection day even if it isn’t full. • Have your green cart at the curb by 7 a.m. • Ensure there is one metre of clearance around the cart to allow the automated truck to pick up the cart safely. • Place your green cart where you normally place your garbage (front street or back alley pick up). • Ensure the front faces out. • If you have front street pick up, place your green cart on the street. During winter months, modifications may have to be made. • If you live in a cul-de-sac or other area that is challenging for green cart collection and you have concerns about pick up or green cart placement, please call Waste & Recycling at 403.948.0246. Staff will assist you with a solution for successful curbside pick up.
Green cart care • Carts can be stored in your garage, by your house or in a shed. Keep them in a shaded, cool spot. • Clean the carts the same way you would clean a garbage can rinse them periodically to wash off any debris. Empty the water from the cart into your lawn or garden (please do not allow rinsing water to wash into the storm water system) and allow it to dry completely. • The green carts are the property of City of Airdrie but the responsibility lies with the homeowner. The green carts remain with the home if you move.

Odours/pests
Yard waste
Many residents new to the organics program express concerns about potential odours and/or pests. However, during our pilot program in Airdrie and through research with other communities who have implemented an organics program, pests and odours are seldom an issue. Weekly pick up of the green cart during the warmer months (May until November) should minimize potential odours/pests. Here are a few additional tips to try as well:
• Yard waste can be placed loose in your green cart or placed in a paper yard waste bag and then put in your green cart.
• Wrap your organics in newspaper or paper towels. • Use compostable bags. Although they are not required, they do help to control odours effectively. • Keep your green cart shaded from the sun.
• Try layering your cart to reduce the possibility of wet organics becoming stuck in the cart. • Place newspaper on the bottom and/or sides or your green cart to absorb liquid. • Brush, hedge and shrub trimmings, roots, stumps, sod and similar materials that do not fit in the cart can be taken to the Airdrie Transfer site for a fee. • If you have more yard waste than will fit into your green cart, you can hold on to it until next week’s pick up or take it to the Eastside Recycle Depot.
• Keep the lid on your green cart and kitchen catcher closed. • Sprinkle baking soda into the green cart and/or kitchen catcher. • Rinse the green cart frequently. • Try layering your organics with wet/dry layers. To do this, place a layer of newspaper, leaves, or other dry compostable material then alternate layers with wet kitchen waste or grass clippings. • Place newspaper at the bottom of your cart to help absorb liquid from organic materials. Set your cart out on collection day, even if it is not full.
Plastic bags are the #1 contaminate in organics recycling. Never use plastic garbage bags or grocery bags for organics recycling.

Tips from our Parks Department Be weed wise!
Early Aphid Control
What is a weed? A weed is an unwanted plant species that can quickly out-compete native vegetation for space, sunlight, and nutrients. This can cause an ecological shift that could result in an upset of natural environments, wildlife, agricultural lands and livestock. Invasive weeds also become a fire threat and can quickly affect the aesthetic value of a public space or property.
We don’t generally even think about aphids until they take flight en masse in August and by then, it’s too late to take any sort of action. If you want to lessen the aphid invasion this summer, the time to act is now.
Control To prevent weeds, follow this simple checklist: • Inspect your garden, yard, and back alleys regularly, removing new and unwanted weed growth. • Research ornamentals you wish to plant in your garden and avoid wildflower mixes as invasive weed seeds may be present. • Mechanical control such as hand picking or pulling, mowing, cutting or treatment with a suitable herbicide. Remember, bslooming flowers contain viable seeds! • Do not place weeds in backyard composters. Many weed seeds may stay viable in backyard composts and are reintroduced back in to yards and gardens. • Nuisance weeds such as dandelions or stinkweed can be placed in your green cart. Noxious or prohibited weeds cannot be placed in the green cart and instead should be double bagged and placed in the garbage.
Aphids are tiny, pear-shaped insects that range in colour from green to grey to black, depending on the species. They can be found on new growth under leaves and on new stems. Severely infested plants can have distorted growth due to the aphids sucking their sap. While aphids aren’t fatal to most plants, they do weaken them. When aphids feed, they only process a small amount nutrient from the sap, the remainder flows through them and is excreted as ‘honey-dew’. The sticky substance lands on cars, decks, patio furniture, and other plants which is then colonized by sooty mould. While this is only an aesthetic problem, it can be a real nuisance. The simplest way to control aphids is to drown them while they’re still in their nymph (wingless) stage by spraying a steady stream of plain water over them for a few minutes. The key is to be vigilant about inspecting and flooding your plants early and often. Another way to control aphids is to control ants. They feed on the aphids honey dew and have been known to herd them like sheep and a fiercely protective over their ‘flock’. They will defend them against predators (lady beetles) and move them to new food sources faster than they could move on their own. If aphids are controlled early in the season you can reduce swarms of them in August and September.

Meadow Vole The meadow vole, or field mouse, is a compact, stocky rodent with short legs and short tail approximately 14 to 19 cm long. They generally have grey fur. The City of Airdrie Parks department does not conduct vole control, as the meadow vole is native to our area and plays an important role in the ecological niche as a primary food source for birds of prey and carnivorous mammals. Voles can be found in all areas of the city, but are most commonly found in areas bordering open spaces. Large population fluctuations are characteristic of voles, after a winter with a large snow accumulation we often notice a higher vole population in the spring.
If you have questions about the prevention or control of voles, please contact the Parks Department at 403.948.8400.
Voles eat a variety of plants and occasionally eat the bark around the base of smaller trees. They can be a nuisance for home owners and gardeners by creating trails in the turf and gnawing on smaller trees. The damage from the voles is often observed in the spring when the snow melts. To prevent vole damage, follow the tips below: • Wrap ¼” wire mesh wrapped around the base of smaller trees. • Eliminate yard waste, such as leaves and grass clipping piles. • Maintain and mow grass. • Bird feed on the ground may attract voles.
If you have voles: • Trapping may be effective for controlling a small population in a residential yard. This can be done by using a mouse snap trap set perpendicular to the runway, a few inches away from the burrow entrance. • Turf damage will often rejuvenate in the spring, after raking the damage and fertilizing.

Local Lens Curbside organics recycling, which began in April, is the newest initiative in Airdrie’s waste and recycling strategy. Recycling organics turns material that is currently being wasted into a new, usable and valuable product, it saves landfill space and reduces greenhouse gases organics generate in the landfill. The program is also more cost effective than disposing of these materials in a landfill. For more information on organic recycling, visit airdrie.ca/organics.
