Our commitment to safety - All staff are first aid and CPR certified. Strict child to staff ratios are maintained through the booking process to ensure the safety of all children. Staffing ratios are one staff member to six children (maximum up to two infants). Staff are only brought in if there are a minimum number of children pre-booked during the hours of operation. Booking - Peak times in child care are weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. It is recommended to pre-book with as much notice as possible. To guarantee a spot during non-peak times, a minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required. Child care accepts bookings up to one month in advance. Drop-in is permitted when ratios have not been met. Continuous bookings - Genesis Place has reserved a limited number of spaces during scheduled hours for adult patrons registered in a dry land or aquatic program. A 10–level program for children ages five to 12 years Level 1 The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in, on and around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all of the criteria have been successfully completed.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the five metre front swim.

Level 2

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (five metres) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.

Level 3

This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15 metre swim.

Level 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10 metres) and back swim with shoulder roll (15 metres). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.

Level 5

This level introduces the back crawl (15 metres), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15 metres. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.

Level 6

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25 metres), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25 metres), introduces elementary backstroke (15 metres), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for one and a half minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.

Level 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50 metres), back crawl (50 metres), elementary back stroke (25 metres) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.

Level 8

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15 metres) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater kick for three minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.

Level 9

This level reviews the front crawl (100 metres), back crawl (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres), breast stroke (25 metres), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (three minutes). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.

Level 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary back stroke 50 metres, breast stroke 50 metres and sidestroke 25 metres). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500 metre swim.

Kids Connection preschool

Ages 3 to 5

Children are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities including craft, special events, sharing, imaginative centre play, circle time, sensory table activities, field trips, letter and number identification, creative movement in the dance studio and games, sports and skill development in the gymnasium. Our programming allows children the opportunity to develop and use new talents, skills and interests that will assist them when they enter the school system. Early literacy and language skills are explored by combining calendar activities, name recognition activities, letter of the week program, special helpers and reading and listening centres. Themes related to the world around us offer many opportunities to learn about a variety of topics allow children to relate these ideas to their everyday life.

Social and emotional learning Social and emotional learning is explored daily in our classroom. Children have the opportunities to choose learning centres to play in with other classmates; sensory tables open up the chance to explore varied textures and materials while sharing the experience with their peers. This time is a fantastic time to discover how to share and empathize with others in the classroom.

Creative experiences Creative experiences occur regularly in our program. Unstructured art and craft times allow everyone the opportunity to try out new materials and let their imaginations soar. Our centres are designed to allow the children a chance to play creatively using their imaginations to create their own experiences.

Physical growth and skill development Physical growth and skill development are a huge part of our program. Physical literacy is the ability for children to learn the skills necessary for success in being active for life. It is as important to healthy growth and development as the ABC’s are important to literacy and learning for life. According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, being active can help young children maintain a healthy weight, improve movement skills, have fun, be happy, develop self-confidence and improve learning and attention. We focus on building those necessary skills such as hopping, jumping, skipping, catching, throwing and balancing.

Spring Tree Care Trees and shrubs require a lot of energy to leaf out in the spring, and it all must come from reserved ‘food’ that has been stored from previous seasons growth. For the spring, it’s best not to cause any unnecessary damage like pruning, or accidental root damage turning over soil in nearby flower or vegetable gardens. A good rule of thumb is to “Prune in June.” By this time leaves will have opened fully and be producing food quickly enough deal with stressors like pruning wounds. Spring is also a great time to fertilize trees and shrubs. A balanced slow release fertilizer is your best option. Do not fertilize past the end of July. Trees and shrubs also do better when they are not in competition with turf grass. Creating a mulched bed or tree well will generally improve the health, and look of your yard.

Dig the Perfect Tree Well Here are a few simple steps that will help you dig the perfect tree well for trees that have been planted within the last one to five years. 1. Using an edger or a shovel, cut a circle outside of the drip line of the tree. Remove all of the sod and weed within the circle, while carefully avoiding damage to tree roots. Work slow release fertilizer into the soil. 2. Apply a layer of shredded wood or bark mulch within the well to a maximum depth of 10 cm (3.5 inches). Keep mulch at least 10 cm away from the trunk of the tree. Mulch piled against the trunk can cause decay issues in the future. 3. Free shredded wood mulch is available at 23 East Lake Hill NE from May to September. This mulch is a byproduct of City pruning and removal work.

“Cart placement is the main reason collection is missed. Check website for proper placement.” Green cart care • Your cart can be stored in your garage, by your house or in a shed. Keep it in a shaded, cool spot. • Clean the carts the same way you would clean a garbage can — rinse it periodically to wash off any debris. Empty the water from the cart onto your lawn or garden (please do not allow rinsing water to wash into the storm water system) and allow it to dry completely. • The green cart is the property of the City of Airdrie but the care and maintenance lies with the homeowner. The green cart remains with the home if you move.

Yard waste • Yard waste can be placed loose in your green cart or placed in a paper yard waste bag and then put in your green cart. • Try to layer your cart contents (food and yard waste) to reduce the possibility of wet organics becoming stuck in the cart. • Place newspaper on the bottom and/or sides of your green cart to absorb liquid or help with freezing in the winter. • Yard waste including leaves, grass clippings, plants and brush/shrubs/flower trimmings can be placed in your green cart. Similar items that do not fit in the cart can be held until your next collection day, or taken to the Eastside Recycle Depot.

Tips • Do not use plastic bags for food or yard waste. Biodegradable and oxo-degradable bags are not the same as compostable bags and will contaminate the organic material. • Ensure your kitchen catcher liner is compostable. Plastic bags do not compost and will contaminate the organic materials. • Your kitchen catcher can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. • Sprinkle baking soda in your kitchen catcher and green cart to minimize odours.

We welcome all questions and comments about the organics program. Contact us at 403.948.0246 or email organics@airdrie.ca.

• Tree stumps, roots and large branches are not accepted in the organics program and can be taken to the Airdrie Transfer Site for a fee.

Plastic bags are the #1 contaminant in our green carts. Never use plastic bags in your green cart.
