As we embark on another summer season, it’s hard to believe that this is already my second summer serving this amazing community. Our Parks and Recreation team has been putting in tireless efforts over the fall and winter to reinstate beloved programs and services that were temporarily put on hold due to the pandemic. We are excited to share with you all the exciting plans we have in store for this summer, including a full-day Summer Camp "Canyon Kids" as well as indoor facility rentals, enrichment half-day camps, and so much more.
And the fun doesn’t stop there! We’re proud to collaborate with local nonprofits and community partners to host community events that celebrate our diverse and multicultural community, including Juneteenth and AC Pride. Make sure to mark your calendars for our 4th of July Celebration at Community Park II, where we will continue our parade, followed by our park festival and ending with a spectacular fireworks show. For a complete list of our amazing celebrations and community events, visit the Community Calendar on the City’s website, and don’t forget to subscribe to the City Manager’s Updates.
We’re dedicated to enhancing and expanding our programs and services within the Parks and Recreation Department, and we encourage you to get up, get out and play with us! We hope you take advantage and experience all that we have to offer—from our parks, trails, and open spaces to our recreational programs and services. Let’s make this summer a memorable experience for you and your family here in American Canyon. I hope to bump into you soon!
Happy Adventures,
Alexandra Ikeda Parks and Recreation Director

Welcome to the City of American Canyon’s Swim Lesson Program! As an authorized provider for the American Red Cross, it is our goal to provide the best aquatic training and programs to promote water safety throughout our community. We have partnered with the American Red Cross which has developed and designed a Learn-to-Swim program that we offer at the Phillip West Aquatics Center. Each class is tailored to the needs of our program participants so they can progress at a comfortable pace with hands-on instruction from our aquatic staff. This program focuses on building skills one step at a time, giving the opportunity to master one element before moving onto the next. All swim lessons are two weeks, meeting Monday through Thursday, for a total of eight (8) twenty-five (25) minute classes. Space is limited, and classes are expected to fill; register early and for multiple sessions to ensure your spot.
Group Swim lessons
Parent & Pollywog (6 months-4 years)
Our parent and child swim lessons are designed to create an enjoyable, non-threatening environment for infants and toddlers to learn to be comfortable in and around water with parent support. An adult is required to accompany each infant or toddler in the water for each swim lesson class. Adults will learn how to teach their infant or toddler important safety skills, as well as basic swim lesson skills. This class is held in a group setting.
Level 1: Guppies (4-12 years)
An introduction to basic swimming skills. Each class has a max enrollment of five (5) students to one (1) instructor. Participants will be introduced to the aquatic environment, develop independence and water competency, and will learn the following skills: blowing bubbles, holding their breath, retrieving a submerged object, and learning the minimum basic skills needed to be safe in the water.
Level 2: Turtles (4-12 years)
Designed to develop fundamental aquatic skills. Each class has a max enrollment of five (5) students to one (1) instructor. Each swimmer will participate in fun, engaging, and challenging swimming skills to continue to progress towards being an independent swimmer. Class skills include independently floating on their front and back, independent front and back glides, front crawl with arms and legs, and retrieving a submerged object.
Level 3: Stingrays (4-12 years)
Focuses on stroke development. Each class has a max enrollment of five (5) students to one (1) instructor. Swimmers will participate in fun, engaging, and challenging swimming skills to continue to develop their strokes to become better swimmers, be introduced to new swimming skills, and learn some water safety skills. This class builds on what was previously learned in Level 1 and Level 2. Some class skills include swimming front crawl for 15 yards, treading water for 30 seconds, and swimming elementary backstroke for 15 yards.
Level 4: Otters (4-12 years)
Focuses on stroke development. Each class has a max enrollment of five (5) students to one (1) instructor. Swimmers will participate in fun, engaging, and challenging swimming skills that will increase their stroke quality and build individual confidence in the water. Some class skills may include swimming front crawl for 25 yards, swimming back crawl for 15 yards, swimming breaststroke for 15 yards, and mastering front and back turns.
Level 5: Dolphins (4-12 years)
Stroke Refinement. Each class has a max enrollment of five (5) students to one (1) instructor. Swimmers will refine their strokes and become more efficient swimmers in the water. Some class skills include front crawl for 50 yards, back crawl for 25 yards, stand and scull in the water for 30 seconds, tread water for 1 minute, and shallow dive to retrieve a submerged object.

CREATE & LEARN
Minecraft Modding Quest Unit 1
Instructors: Create and Learn
Let the fun begin! We start from the very basics of coding concepts in this fun-filled class. Students solve puzzles by coding an agent in the Minecraft game to move, take actions, and react to the environment. They are also given the opportunity to build open-ended puzzles on their own. We will cover core coding concepts including sequence, conditional, loop and more. All the puzzles and the projects are designed by our curriculum experts exclusively for Create & Learn. The class starts from the basics however it covers those pretty fast. For students who are new to coding, we recommend taking Scratch Ninja 1 and 2 before taking this class.
A Mac, Chromebook or Windows PC is needed for this activity. iPad is not supported.
Minecraft Modding Quest Unit 2
Instructors: Create and Learn
Students start to spend more time building openended projects in Part 2, which allows them to expand their imaginations and be creative even more easily. We also advance to teach intermediate coding concepts such as variables, event, and function. Using Minecraft as the platform, students can code to place and break clocks, build structures, spawn animals, develop mini-games, and a lot more. Not only can they play Minecraft, but they can also create their own favorite games as well.
Prerequisite: Must have taken Minecraft Modding Quest 1.
A Mac, Chromebook or Windows PC is needed for this activity. iPad is not supported.
Lights & Beats with Micro: Bit Unit 1
Instructors: Create and Learn
Learn how to control electronic components like LED lights, speakers, and sensors, while building fun games and interactive experiments. Review foundational coding concepts such as loops and conditional statements, and learn more about variables.
A Mac, Chromebook, Windows PC or (optional) Micro: Bit is needed for this activity. iPad is not supported.
Lights & Beats with Micro: Bit Unit 2
Instructors: Create and Learn
Build more fun games while exploring advanced Micro: Bit features such as radio and buttons. Find out how to have two Micro: Bits message each other. Plus you will learn how to code functions, and even master some cool math and security concepts.
A Mac, Chromebook, Windows PC or (optional) Micro: Bit is needed for this activity. iPad is not supported.
