English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)

Overview
If you wish to teach English Language to adults either in the UK or abroad then this course is for you. This course is recognised by the British Council, VSO, and language schools in Britain and abroad. Be part of our lively, multi-cultural college community with students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
What you’ll learn
You will learn all the essential skills and knowledge you need to teach English to adults.
You get hands-on teaching practice and observation of experienced teachers, applying your learning in the classroom with English language learners. The five main topics include:
Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context Language analysis and awareness Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing Planning and resources for different teaching contexts Developing teaching skills and professionalism

Through a mixture of practical work, presentations, group work and coursework.
Where it can take you
This course leads to the Cambridge CELTA and, after completion, you will be ready to begin working in a variety of English as a Second Language teaching contexts in the UK and abroad.

Level 5 Diploma
Overview
The Diploma in Education and Training is a recognised teaching qualification for the post-16 sector. You can become a post-16 teacher in England without a teaching qualification, but it’s a definite advantage to have one, as many employers expect them. This course is for those who are in a full-time teacher/trainer role, or those who are looking to enter the profession and can meet the practice requirements then it will also be suitable.
What you’ll learn
Over the course you will study a variety of topics which will give you a good overview and understanding of the practical elements of teaching and learning, together with supporting theoretical knowledge. Professional practice visits are an assessed part of the programme so you will be observed teaching regularly; this will be both by your tutor and your mentor. There are four mandatory units: Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training Theories, principles and models in education and training Wider professional practice and development in education and training Plus a choice of optional units

Where it can take you
Upon successful completion of this course you will be a qualified to teach in the post-16 sector. You could also progress onto further studies in education with awarding bodies such as Pearson or other universities.

Early Years

Overview
This exciting, work-based programme, proven to raise the quality of practice in early years settings will empower you to transform your practice through reflection and research. The course is aimed at those who are currently working as early years practitioners and wish to gain a Level 5 qualification which may lead to Early Years Teacher Status, a career in management within the sector or teaching.
What you’ll learn
You will learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to good early years practice as well as understand the theory underpinning early years education and care in different settings. Where it can take you
Following your foundation degree, you can apply to progress to the third year of the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies or the BA (Hons) Education Studies undergraduate degrees at Bath Spa University or at City of Bristol College. Successful completion of the BA (Hons) allows you to apply to progress to an initial teacher training course to gain Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Early Childhood Studies Top-Up Year
Level 6 BA (Hons)
Overview
This contemporary and exciting programme provides the opportunity for students who have studied a Foundation Degree in Early Years to complete a full honours degree while continuing to work. It will build on knowledge gained through the Foundation Degree and challenge you to further develop your thinking and practice. This course is designed for early years practitioners wishing to obtain a full degree while still working and it is an excellent progression route for those wishing to progress into teacher training.

This course runs one day a week and is delivered and assessed through practical work, presentations, group work and coursework
Where it can take you
Successful completion of this course allows students to apply to progress to an initial teacher training course to gain Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is also an excellent foundation for other careers within the early childhood sector or wider communities.
What you’ll learn
You will learn to further develop your thinking and practice from the Foundation Degree to be able to apply practical skills and knowledge of working in an early childhood setting. The course is made up of five modules including an education dissertation. Overview
This course is for those who are working or volunteering in an educational setting. The programme will enable you to use and apply your skills and knowledge through reflection and evaluation during your course of study to develop your practice in the workplace.
What you’ll learn
The Foundation Degree is a two-year course during which you will study towards a Level 4 Certificate in Higher Education in the first and the secondyear work towards a Level 5 Foundation Degree in Educational Support. Modules you will cover include: Thinking and learning Child development and the life course Positive interactions with learners The voice of the learner Enhancing subject knowledge Education for social justice and equality Partnership working Reflective professional practice
Delivery method
This course is delivered through a mixture of practical work, taught sessions, presentations and group work. It will be assessed through written reports, reflections, evaluations and essays.
Where it can take you
Upon successful completion of the Foundation Degree, students will be able to apply for progression to a relevant Honours Degree in Education in Professional Practice at UWE Bristol or progress into other education-based courses.

Students who do not meet the minimum academic entry requirements but have significant life and/or work experience will be considered on the basis of evidence of personal, professional and educational experience which indicate an applicant’s ability to meet the demands of a foundation degree.
