Our courses combine work or placements with lectures so that students can use what they have learnt in their work place or placements. We also invite employers into our lectures to share current sector information and enhance students’ experience of contemporary practice. Our staff offer years of experience, a breadth of relevant industry-related experience and many have or are working towards a Masters Degree. If you do not have the required A Level grades for any of our Health and Social care courses. You can find out about our Access to Higher Education courses (page 32).

Counselling

Overview
If you want to gain a professional qualification which enables you to practise as a counsellor in a number of settings, or you would like to enhance your current employment role with qualified counsellor status then this is the course for you.

Counselling Top-Up Year
Level 6 BA (Hons)
Overview
This BA (Hons) degree builds on existing Counselling training at Foundation degree/diploma level to provide an academic topup qualification and to continue professional development.
This programme will equip you with contemporary counselling knowledge, theory and skills and the ability to critically reflect on counselling texts, research, ideas and practice. The experience of conducting research will equip students to work alongside other graduate professionals.
What you’ll learn
This course is built upon the curriculum design of the FdA Counselling offered at City of Bristol College. It offers you the opportunity to expand the knowledge you acquired at Level 5.
During the course, you will engage with critical contemporary counselling issues, including: Managing sustainable delivery Teamwork and collaborative practice Responding to vulnerability and crisis Working with eco-anxiety Developing transcultural competencies
The course covers counselling research, collaborative practice, leadership, coaching and mentoring. Modules will include: Collaborative practice:
Identifying and working with counselling stakeholders Research dissertation Leadership in a counselling setting Counselling within a contemporary context: working with culture, diversity and difference Coaching and mentoring
Delivery method
This course will run one day a week for one academic year through lectures, seminars, online and virtual learning platforms, collaborative study, critical reading, evaluations, independent study, workshops and guest speakers.
You will be assessed through reports, presentations, simulated coaching/ mentoring sessions, case studies and a dissertation.
Where it can take you
Once you have completed this course you will hold a full university-level degree and may wish to undertake further study at Level 7 (including through a Master’s degree) at a number of educational institutions. Alternatively, you would be able to seek job opportunities in a variety of healthcare and counselling settings.

Overview
If you work in health and social care, investing in your professional development can be a powerful way to move your career forward. Getting a better understanding of service user or patient conditions, and learning how best to improve their care, will put you in a much stronger position to progress. So, if you’re looking for your next step and currently work within the NHS or another health or social care provider, and are employed in the industry then this could be the course for you.
Students have to be employed in one of the following areas and have someone suitable, able and willing in their work place to assess their practice.

Where it can take you
It may help you to work as a Band 4 Practitioner with some employers or progress to the second year of a nursing course. This course could also enable you to join the final year of a degree course e.g. BA (Hons) Health & Social Care Management.
The programme structure has been changed to make it compatible with the new BSc (Hons) Nursing (Future Nurse) course.

Health Professions

Overview
Starting with a year’s foundation is a way to build your knowledge of health topics, science and research, so that you can then progress onto a degree programme and take your career forward. The foundation programme for Health Professions is year zero of selected degree courses in the Allied Health Professions and Nursing and Midwifery departments.
If you do not have formal qualifications or meet the normal entry requirements, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and commitment to this area, we will consider your application.
Spend a year getting a solid grounding in science and healthcarerelated topics on this springboard into higher education.

You will study a mix of subjects that will prepare you to progress onto your chosen degree course. After successful completion of the course and a health screening questionnaire you can progress you onto a variety of undergraduate degrees (BSc (Hons)) in Nursing (Adult, Child, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health), Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Oncology, Diagnostic Radiotherapy, Sport Rehabilitation.Successful completion of the BSc makes you eligible to apply for Professional registration.
